Abstract:
This paper argues in favor of a statistical approach to terminology extraction, general to all languages but with language specific parameters. In contrast to many application-oriented terminology studies, which are focused on a particular language and domain, this paper adopts some general principles of the statistical properties of terms and a method to obtain the corresponding language specific parameters. This method is used for the automatic identification of terminology and is quantitatively evaluated in an empirical study of English medical terms. The proposal is theoretically and compu

Objectives. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the occurrence and clinical features of delayed-onset infections after mandibular third-molar extractions. Method and Materials. An observational cohort study was conducted on 179 patients undergoing mandibular third-molar extraction between January 2013 and December 2015, for a total of 217 extractions. Data were recorded at the time of extraction (T0), on suture removal seven days later (T1), and 30 days after the extraction, when patients were contacted and asked about their healing process (T2). In a classification problem, quite often the dimension of the measurement vector is large. Some of these measurements may not be important for separating the classes. Removal of these measurement variables not only reduces the computational cost but also leads to better understanding of class separability. There are some methods in the existing literature for reducing the dimensionality of a classification problem without losing much of the separability information. However, these dimension reduction procedures usually work well for linear classifiers. In the case where competing classes are n

This paper presents the results of a study on information extraction from unrestricted Turkish text using statistical language processing methods. In languages like English, there is a very small number of possible word forms with a given root word. However, languages like Turkish have very productive agglutinative morphology. Thus, it is an issue to build statistical models for specific tasks using the surface forms of the words, mainly because of the data sparseness problem. In order to alleviate this problem, we used additional syntactic information, i.e. the morphological structure of the

Tremor is a neuro degenerative disease causing involuntary musclemovements in human limbs. There are many types of tremor that arecaused due to the damage of nerve cells that surrounds thalamus of thefront brain chamber. It is hard to distinguish or classify the tremors asthere are many reasons behind the formation of specific category, soevery tremor type is named behind its frequency type. Propermedication for the cure by physician is possible only when the disease isidentified.Because of the argument given in the above paragraph, there is a needof a device or a technique to analyze the trem

The presented research explores two different problems of statistical data analysis. In the first part of this thesis, a method for 3D shape representation, compression and smoothing is presented. First, a technique for encoding non-spherical surfaces using second generation wavelet decomposition is described. Second, a novel model is proposed for wavelet-based surface enhancement. This part of the work aims to develop an efficient algorithm for removing irrelevant and noise-like variations from 3D shapes. Surfaces are encoded using second generation wavelets, and the proposed methodology con

Informal unpaved roads in developing countries arise naturally through human movement and informal housing setups. These roads are not authorised nor maintained by council, nor recorded in official databases or online maps. Mapping such roads from satellite images is a common problem, as information on these roads is critical for sustainable city growth. Information on their location and extent may be gleaned from spatial big data, however, no automatic or semi-automatic approach is freely available. Fourteen word frequency metrics were tested to evaluate their effectiveness in identifying vocabulary in a domain. Fifteen domain engineering projects were examined to measure how closely the vocabularies selected by the fourteen word frequency metrics were to the vocabularies produced by domain engineers. Six filtering mechanisms were also evaluated to measure their impact on selecting proper vocabulary terms. The results of the experiment show that stemming and stop word removal do improve overlap scores and that term frequency is a valuable contributor to overlap. Variations on term frequ

The 2017 SIS Conference aims to highlight the crucial role of the Statistics in Data Science. In this new domain of ‘meaning’ extracted from the data, the increasing amount of produced and available data in databases, nowadays, has brought new challenges. That involves different fields of statistics, machine learning, information and computer science, optimization, pattern recognition. These afford together a considerable contribute in the analysis of ‘Big data’, open data, relational and complex data, structured and no-structured.
