Abstract:
The separable convex resource allocation problem with nested bound constraints aims to allocate B units of resources to n activities to minimize a separable convex cost function, with lower and upper bounds on the total amount of resources that can be consumed by nested subsets of activities. We develop a new combinatorial algorithm to solve this model exactly. Our algorithm is capable of solving instances with millions of activities in several minutes. The running time of our algorithm is at most 73% of the running time of the current best algorithm for benchmark instances with three classes

AbstractWe obtain nontrivial estimates of quadratic character sums of division polynomials Ψn(P), n = 1, 2, … , evaluated at a given point P on an elliptic curve over a finite field of q elements. Our bounds are nontrivial if the order of P is at least q1/2+∈ for some fixed ∈ > 0. This work is motivated by an open question about statistical indistinguishability of some cryptographically relevant sequences that was recently brought up by K. Lauter and the second author.

Abstract:
Motivated by the advantage of the gateway that acts as the performance bottleneck in wireless mesh networks (WMNs) while shaping the traffic with the greedy fractal shaper, a novel approach is proposed to derive the upper stochastic/statistical bound of the backlog, delay and delay jitter of the WMNs gateway quality of service (QoS) statistic bound model. By analyzing and evaluating the QoS performance of the present model based on network calculus theory with fair bandwidth distributed strategy, a number of useful curves are achieved. Simulation shows the performance of the present model.

Motivated by a bound derived in a recent work [C. Arenz, B. Russell, D. Burgarth and H. Rabitz, New J. In practice, we not only need to reach the desired unitary gates but we need to do so in a reasonable time (below the typical decoherence time). Therefore, we employ the recently introduced lower bound to estimate the minimum gate time and resort to numerical gate optimization in order to study the tightness of the obtained bound and

Motivated by the desire to numerically calculate rigorous upper and lower bounds on deviation probabilities over large classes of probability distributions, we present an adaptive algorithm for the reconstruction of increasing real-valued functions. While this problem is similar to the classical statistical problem of isotonic regression, the optimisation setting alters several characteristics of the problem and opens natural algorithmic possibilities. We present our algorithm, establish sufficient conditions for convergence of the reconstruction to the ground truth, and apply the method to sy

In real-life situations, a customer order can have some requirements including due dates, weights of jobs, and unequal ready times. Motivated by the controversy concerning the pairing symmetry of the superconducting sodium-doped cobalt oxide, we investigate the microscopic electronic structure of an f-wave superconductor in the vortex state by diagonalizing an effective Hamiltonian specified in the triangular lattice self-consistently. We find that the low-lying vortex core states are in essence extended for the nodal f-wave superconductors. In comparison, we find localized bound states in the vortex core of the fully-gapped (d + id')-wave superconductors.

Automatic acquisition of lexical knowledge is critical to a wide range of natural language processing tasks. Especially important is knowledge about verbs, which are the primary source of relational information in a sentence-the predicate-argument structure that relates an action or state to its participants (i.e., who did what to whom). In this work, we report on supervised learning experiments to automatically classify three major types of English verbs, based on their argument structure-specifically, the thematic roles they assign to participants. Abstract This study compares the effectiveness of different trolling strategies in two online contexts: politically oriented forums that address issues like global warming, and interest-based forums that deal with people’s personal interests. Based on previous research, we consider trolling as context-bound and suggest that relevance theory and common grounding theory can explain why people may attend and react to certain types of troll posts in one forum, but pay scant attention to them in another. We postulate two hypotheses on how successful (i.e., disruptive) trolling varies according to context: that trolls’ messaging strategies appear in different frequencies in political and interest forums (H1), and that context-matching strategies also produce longer futile conversations (H2). Using Hardaker’s categorization of trolling strategies on a covert–overt continuum, our statistical analysis on a dataset of 49 online conversations verified H1: in political forums covert strategies were more common than overt ones; in interest forums the opposite was the case. Regarding H2 our results were inconclusive. However, the results motivate further research on this phenomenon with larger datasets.

In this paper, we investigate the generalization performance of multi-class classification, for which we obtain a shaper error bound by using the notion of local Rademacher complexity and additional unlabeled samples, substantially improving the state-of-the-art bounds in existing multi-class learning methods. The statistical learning motivates us to devise an efficient multi-class learning framework with the local Rademacher complexity and Laplacian regularization. Coinciding with the theoretical analysis, experimental results demonstrate that the stated approach achieves better performance.

The non-deterministic Young’s modulus of structural elements is modeled as random variables while the uncertain mass density is represented by fuzzy parameters with associated membership functions. By implementing the α -sublevel strategy, the stochastic fuzzy eigenvalue problem is rigorously transformed into a series of stochastic interval analysis of natural frequencies.
