Abstract:
The purpose of this exploratory research was to investigate potential factors (i.e. gender, time lapse between the latest statistics class and completion of the statistics test, grade point average (GPA), attitude towards statistics), which are associated with the comprehension and retention of statistical knowledge in Baccalaureate Psychology students. The criterion variable was statistical competency, which was measured in five subdomains: basic concepts, descriptives, correlation/regression, hypothesis testing, and inferential statistics.

Scott, Stephen. "Project plans and record-keeping on construction sites in the United Kingdom." Thesis, University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/10443/623.

Full text
Abstract:
The main part of this thesis involves an investigation into the ways in which contractors and supervising engineers deal with the programme of works for their projects. A secondary strand concerns the problems of record-keeping, in particular the records needed to assess claims for delay. A final chapter is included to describe a new model for teaching the principles of CPM, which developed from the research. Little is known about the procedures adopted for specifying project plans, for checking them or for using them to assess contractual claims. By interviewing contractors and consulting engineers using a questionnaire, this area has been opened up and information obtained to allow sensible recommendations to be made. The problems of concurrent delay have been examined and new ideas as to how they may be dealt with put forward. Some of the procedures used for this section of the work are considered to be novel and original. In considering the problems of assessing delay claims, it soon became clear that an 'as-built' record of progress would be, most helpful, and a computer program to generate such a record has been written. The author is not aware of any such similar program. Finally, the model for teaching CPM is an innovation. it uses a recognized format, that of the time-scaled diagram, but adds another dimension in allowing the activities to move on the diagram within the logic of the network. Throughout this thesis, the capitalized forms of engineer and contractor (Engineer and Contractor) have been given special meanings. Two separate questionnaires were used: one for the professionals involved in contract supervision and one for those involved in the construction of the contract. The particular interviewees questioned using the first of these questionnaires have been described as Engineers and those questioned using the second questionnaire as Contractors.

Olsen, Andrew Nolan. "Hierarchical Bayesian Methods for Evaluation of Traffic Project Efficacy." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2011. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/2922.

Full text
Abstract:
A main objective of Departments of Transportation is to improve the safety of the roadways over which they have jurisdiction. Safety projects, such as cable barriers and raised medians, are utilized to reduce both crash frequency and crash severity. The efficacy of these projects must be evaluated in order to use resources in the best way possible. Five models are proposed for the evaluation of traffic projects: (1) a Bayesian Poisson regression model; (2) a hierarchical Poisson regression model building on model (1) by adding hyperpriors; (3) a similar model correcting for overdispersion; (4) a dynamic linear model; and (5) a traditional before-after study model. Evaluation of these models is discussed using various metrics including DIC. Using the models selected for analysis, it was determined that cable barriers are quite effective at reducing severe crashes and cross-median crashes on Utah highways. Raised medians are also largely effective at reducing severe crashes. The results of before and after analyses are highly valuable to Departments of Transportation in identifying effective projects and in determining which roadway segments will benefit most from their implementation.

Charoenphol, Dares. "Using robust statistical methodology to evaluate the performance of project delivery systems| A case study of horizontal construction." Thesis, The George Washington University, 2017. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10252878.

Full text
Abstract:

The objective of this study is to demonstrate the application of the bootstrapping M-estimator (a robust Analysis of Variance, ANOVA) to test the null hypotheses of means equality among the cost and schedule performance of the three project delivery systems (PDS). A statistical planned contrast methodology is utilized after the robust ANOVA analysis to further determine where the differences of the means lie.

The results of this research concluded that traditional PDS (Design-Bid-Build, DBB) outperformed the two alternative PDS (“Design-Build (DB) and Construction Manager/General Contractor (CMGC)”), DBB and CMGC outperformed DB, and DBB outperformed CMGC, for the Cost Growth and the Change Order Cost Factor performance. On the other hand, alternative PDS (“DB & CMGC”) outperformed DBB, DB and CMGC (separately) outperformed DBB, and between the two alternative PDS, CMGC outperformed DB, for the Schedule Cost Growth performance.

These findings can help decision makers/owners making an informed decision, regarding cost and schedule related aspects, when choosing PDS for their projects. Though the case study of this research is based on the sample data obtained from the construction industry, the same methodology and statistical process can be applied to other industries and factors/variables of interest when the study sample data are unbalanced and the normality and homogeneity of variance assumptions are violated.

Abstract:
Undergraduate pre-business students who had taken an introductory business statistics course three years ago were sent a questionnaire that, among several other questions, asked them about their views on the usefulness of the course. Students rated the introductory business statistics course as "moderately important" for their business education. They favored an integrated approach that covers both the statistical concepts and the computer software necessary to carry out the statistical analysis, and they had a strong preference for the Microsoft EXCEL software. Students thought that projects played an important role in introducing them to real-world applications of statistics, but they also mentioned several problems that arose with group-based work. Factors mentioned as having had an impact on teaching effectiveness are discussed in the last part of the paper. (author's abstract)

Full text
Abstract:
This study is a part of an experimental project at Statistics Sweden, which aims to, with the use of natural language processing and machine learning, predict Swedish businesses’ area of industry codes, based on their business descriptions. The response to predict consists of the most frequent 30 out of 88 main groups of Swedish standard industrial classification (SNI) codes that each represent a unique area of industry. The transformation from business description text to numerical features was done through the bag-of-words model. SNI codes are set when companies are founded, and due to the human factor, errors can occur. Using data from the Swedish Companies Registration Office, the purpose is to determine if the method of gradient boosting can provide high enough classification accuracy to automatically set the correct SNI codes that differ from the actual response. Today these corrections are made manually. The best gradient boosting model was able to correctly classify 52 percent of the observations, which is not considered high enough to implement automatic code correction into a production environment.

Abstract:
This dissertation discusses the use of the project methodology for teaching statistics in a public school located in São Paulo State. Based on Freire\'s pedagogy, on historical-social Vygotsky\'s psychology, on studies about statistical literacy and on the use of projects in education, a teaching-learning proposal was developed to be applied on classes of senior high school students. The proposal allows the student contact with statistical analysis, once the student chooses a situation of his interest, obtaining and analyzing information concerning the subject. The study of statistical concepts occurs simultaneously with the students research project. The direct contact with the data helps the effective learning and provides a better reflection on the use of statistical concepts. Therefore, this proposal seeks to construct a critical student who is able to understand the information in his daily life.

Abstract:
UAM CorpusTool is a set of tools for the linguistic annotation of text. Core concepts include: • The user defines a ‘project’, which is a set of files, and a set of analyses which are applied to each of these files. • Each ‘analysis’ can be seen as a ‘layer’ of annotation. CorpusTool currently allows two types of annotation: 1. Document Coding: where the text as a whole is assigned features. For instance, these features could represent the register of the document (field, tenor, mode), or text-type. 2. Segment Coding: The user can select segments within a file, and assign features to each of these segments. Segments are specified by dragging the mouse over a span of text, and the user is then prompted to specify the features of this segment. Other annotation types will be added in later versions, allowing annotation of rhetorical structure theory (RST), Generic Structure (GSP), participant chaining, sentence structuring (e.g., Subj, Pred, Mood, Adjunct, etc.), annotation of spoken data etc. UAM CorpusTool replaces prior software of the author, Systemic Coder, which allowed coding of single documents at a single layer. CorpusTool is an attempt to overcome the various limitations that constrained users of Coder. I wish to thank the many users of Coder who forwarded their comments over the years, and to thank those sending me comments on this new tool.

Augustson, Erik, and Oscar Stanser. "Projektutveckling av kvarteret Ärtan : Marknadsanalys." Thesis, Karlstad University, Faculty of Technology and Science, 2009. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kau:diva-4296.

Full text
Abstract:

Skanska Hus Väst is planning to construct condominiums in an area called Ärtan which lies in Karlstad, in the city district of Romstad. To be able to construct condominiums in this area a market analysis is needed. The market analysis describes the most appropriate type of residence to construct depending on ground conditions, public demand, the surrounding buildings and environment, the pattern in which the inhabitants move in the rural- and in the city district and how much the customer is willing to pay for a condominium on Ärtan. This means that relevant statistics of income, employment, prices on equal objects and more is needed to forecast the housing- and property market.

The first part in the project development of Ärtan is to make a market analysis. The market analysis includes the city analysis, the object analysis and the business intelligence, figure 2.

The business intelligence is not included because the report is demarcated to the city- and object analysis only. The city- and object analysis will result in the determination of a suitable target group and how much the customer will be willing to pay for a condominium in Ärtan.  The purpose of this study is to determine these two and also decide the methods most appropriate for analyzing and determining the will of payment for the project.

The methods used for analyzing and making a conclusion in the report are:

  • Tobins Q
  • Business sector specialization quota
  • Regression analysis
  • Multiple Regression analysis
  • The method of location and price (Ortprismetoden)
  • Demand with the help of elasticity's.

With these methods and with a great amount of collected data we have drawn the conclusion that the conditions for constructing condominiums in Ärtan are not optimal but still profitable. We have tried to make this judgment as objective as possible and we have looked at all the advantages and disadvantages of the area. Karlstad's business sector and employment have increased during the last years and are displaying good conditions to withstand these troubling financial times.

We found good conditions to invest in the real estate market in Romstad, due to the lack of condominiums in the area and due to a higher level of incomes compared to the rest of the inhabitants of Karlstad.

After the traces from the financial crises we assess that the will of payment on condominiums on Ärtan should be about 22 000 Swedish kronor/m2 (living area) in the interval of 20 500 - 23 000 Swedish kronor/m2 (living area). Suitable target groups for the product are people which have a good and firm will of payment and are in their thirties or forties. A good thing to do is also to adjust parts of the condominiums for older inhabitants. Our opinion is that a mix of younger and older people creates charm, comfort and a sense of safety in the neighborhood which is needed to get the area more attractive on the market.

All the methods that were used in this analysis showed similar results which led us to the conclusion that all of the methods used are suitable for this assignment. However, the combination of the multiple regression analysis and the brokers' opinions is the most suitable one for the assignment because the combination can be executed easy, swift and true.

Lou, Wenjie. "MULTI-STATE MODELS WITH MISSING COVARIATES." UKnowledge, 2016. http://uknowledge.uky.edu/statistics_etds/16.

Full text
Abstract:
Multi-state models have been widely used to analyze longitudinal event history data obtained in medical studies. The tools and methods developed recently in this area require the complete observed datasets. While, in many applications measurements on certain components of the covariate vector are missing on some study subjects. In this dissertation, several likelihood-based methodologies were proposed to deal with datasets with different types of missing covariates efficiently when applying multi-state models. Firstly, a maximum observed data likelihood method was proposed when the data has a univariate missing pattern and the missing covariate is a categorical variable. The construction of the observed data likelihood function is based on the model of a joint distribution of the response longitudinal event history data and the discrete covariate with missing values. Secondly, we proposed a maximum simulated likelihood method to deal with the missing continuous covariate when applying multi-state models. The observed data likelihood function was approximated by using the Monte Carlo simulation method. At last, an EM algorithm was used to deal with multiple missing covariates when estimating the parameters of multi-state model. The EM algorithm would be able to handle multiple missing discrete covariates in general missing pattern efficiently. All the proposed methods are justified by simulation studies and applications to the datasets from the SMART project, a consortium of 11 different high-quality longitudinal studies of aging and cognition.

Full text
Abstract:
The objective of this research is to empirically assess the value and validity of a multi-organization data set in the building of prediction models for several ‘local’ software organizations; that is, smaller organizations that might have a few project records but that are interested in improving their ability to accurately predict software project effort. Evidence to date in the research literature is mixed, due not to problems with the underlying research ideas but with limitations in the analytical processes employed: • the majority of previous studies have used only a single organization as the ‘local’ sample, introducing the potential for bias • the degree to which the conclusions of these studies might apply more generally is unable to be determined because of a lack of transparency in the data analysis processes used. It is the aim of this research to provide a more robust and visible test of the utility of the largest multi-organization data set currently available – that from the ISBSG – in terms of enabling smaller-scale organizations to build relevant and accurate models for project-level effort prediction. Stepwise regression is employed to enable the construction of ‘local’, ‘global’ and ‘refined global’ models of effort that are then validated against actual project data from eight organizations. The results indicate that local data, that is, data collected for a single organization, is almost always more effective as a basis for the construction of a predictive model than data sourced from a global repository. That said, the accuracy of the models produced from the global data set, while worse than that achieved with local data, may be sufficiently accurate in the absence of reliable local data – an issue that could be investigated in future research. The study concludes with recommendations for both software engineering practice – in setting out a more dynamic scenario for the management of software development – and research – in terms of implications for the collection and analysis of software engineering data.

Abstract:

Fay, Robert H. "Application of the Fusion Model for Cognitive Diagnostic Assessment with Non-diagnostic Algebra-Geometry Readiness Test Data." Scholar Commons, 2018. https://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/7285.

Full text
Abstract:
This study retrofitted a Diagnostic Classification Model (DCM) known as the Fusion model onto non-diagnostic test data from of the University of Chicago School Mathematics Project (UCSMP) Algebra and Geometry Readiness test post-test used with Transition Mathematics (Third Edition, Field-Trial Version). The test contained 24 multiple-choice middle school math items, and was originally given to 95 advanced 6th grade and 293 7th grade students. The use of these test answers for this study was an attempt to show that by using cognitive diagnostic analysis techniques on test items not constructed for that purpose, highly predictable multidimensional cognitive attribute profiles for each test taker could be obtained. These profiles delineated whether a given test taker was a master or non-master for each attribute measured by the test, thus allowing detailed diagnostic feedback to be disseminated to both the test takers and their teachers. The full version of the non-compensatory Fusion model, specifically, along with the Arpeggio software package, was used to estimate test taker profiles on each of the four cognitive attributes found to be intrinsic to the items on this test, because it handled both slips and guesses by test takers and accounted for residual skills not defined by the four attributes and twenty-four items in the Q-matrix. The attributes, one or more of which was needed to correctly answer an item, were defined as: Skills— those procedures that students should master with fluency; e.g., multiplying positive and negative numbers; Properties—which deal with the principles underlying the mathematics concepts being studied, such as being able to recognize and use the Repeated-Addition Property of Multiplication; Uses—which deal with applications of mathematics in real situations ranging from routine "word problems" to the development and use of mathematical models, like finding unknowns in real situations involving multiplication; and, Representations—which deal with pictures, graphs, or objects that illustrate concepts. Ultimately, a Q-matrix was developed from the rating of four content experts, with the attributes needed to answer each item clearly delineated. A validation of this Q-matrix was obtained from the Fusion model Arpeggio application to the data as test taker profiles showed which attributes were mastered by each test taker and which weren’t. Masters of the attributes needed to be acquired to successfully answer a test item had a proportion-correct difference from non-masters of .44, on average. Regression analysis produced an R-squared of .89 for the prediction of total scores on the test items by the attribute mastery probabilities obtained from the Fusion model with the final Q-matrix. Limitations of the study are discussed, along with reasons for the significance of the study.

Abstract:
A study into the factors that affect power in an analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) design were examined. Four factors - sample size, significance level, dependent variable-covariate correlations and homogeneity of regression - were varied in a population study. Results indicate that power increased when the dependent variable-covariate correlations increased and when sample size increased. Power also increased when a less stringent alpha level was used. Homogeneity of regression did not effect power. Implications and recommendations for the applied researcher are discussed.

Abstract:
