Full textAt the dawn of the 20th century, issues related to labor regulation and the development of social insurance and welfare systems held a prominent place in reform agendas, as demonstrated by the adoption, within just a few decades, of several laws related among others to working hours and schedules, workplace safety, pensions, and trade union rights. The period 1880-1914 also witnessed the expansion of the administration of labor, as well as the extension of labor statistics and surveys. Hence, labor became both a target for action by social reformers, who developed methods to analyze it, and a subject of interest for emerging labor and employer unions. These organizations initiated surveys and produced data to position themselves on these issues. This research aims at exploring the relationship between the development of legislation related to labor, social insurance, and welfare and the rise of labor surveys and statistics in France between 1880 and 1914. The aim of this thesis is to explore the relationship between the development of labor legislation, social insurance, and welfare provisions, and the rise of labor statistics in France between 1880 and 1914. Two major questions serve as the guiding framework for this research. The first concerns the role of labor statistics in the decision-making process during this period. By analyzing parliamentary debates on industrial accidents at the end of the 19th century, this research documents the fragmented nature of the statistics used by lawmakers, the predominance of private and foreign sources, and the limited references to official statistical and labor administrations. The second question concerns the influence of labor and employer organizations in these debates and their capacity to produce and disseminate data. This research highlights the considerable influence of employer organizations, compared to labor unions, in these discussions, as they strengthened their position as "authorized" organizations by producing technical documentation. By focusing on the production of surveys and the use of statistical, demographic, and financial expertise by several workers organizations, this thesis also challenges the common notion of workers' powerlessness, often portrayed as an inability to take positive action. This view, frequently adopted by certain social researchers and parliamentarians throughout the 19th century, contributed to the perpetuation of biases against workers’ voices

Full textThis study examines the statistical tools available to social science practitioners. The last 30 years have witnessed a considerable development in statistical techniques, both numerical and graphical. This is in large part a result of the application of statistical methods to an ever increasing number of fields, and also of the emergence, barely 20 years ago, of the personal computer. Using real data from surveys and other studies conducted in the U. S. , this research will show how important problems that arise in empirical data can be tackled by relying on well-known as well as relatively recent statistical techniques. Applied statistics is not simply an array of procedures; it is above all a way of thinking about empirical data, specifically how to discriminate between real and chance effects. This research endeavors to show that the role of applied statistics is to reveal both the meaning of the data and their limitations. The application of statistical methods to empirical data can often act as a catalyst to stimulate the sociological imagination

Full textIn a stratified sampling design, the calculation of the stratum boundaries can be done in several ways. We can rely on personal judgment and separate the units of the population based on the distribution of the stratification variable. Other scientific and rigorous methods give a better result, including the algorithms of cum √f, Sethi and Kosak. For asymmetric populations, as found in the business surveys, the use of a census stratum reduces the sample size and gives more reliable estimates. Univariate methods, those that use a single stratification variable in calculating the boundaries, do not guarantee that the target precision will be obtained for all the variables of interest in the survey. Using the variable of interest that is the most difficult to estimate, as a stratification variable, makes it possible to guarantee a minimum target CV for all the other variables, but generates large sample sizes.

Full textWas the introduction of informatics into developing countries a prepared reflected and planned act ? Have informatics been adapted to the environment and the particular material and human needs of the developing countries ? Can informatics bring the economical and political solutions which would enable an acceleration of development in developing countries ? Is there a risk of diminishing, on a short-term or a long-term basis, the employment potential ? What modifications to work organisation will result from this introduction ? What new needs will it create on the qualifications and training of workers ? Does the use of informatics by the political power threatens freedom and democracy ? Will the new means of communication allow the development of collective creative forms of expression or will they suffocate the spontaneous expressions of communication ? Will they serve to expand culture or diminish it ? Is there a risk of increasing cultural imperialism ? It is through those various interrogations that leads us to study the socio-cultural and economico-political impacts of computer technology in the developing countries. If the developing countries cannot allow themselves to "miss out" on computer technology, they must not consider this technology as a miraculous panacea to their socio-economical problems. Informatics, as currently used in the developing countries, risks father to widen the existing gap which seperates them from the industrialised countries

Full textThis thesis proposes an empirical analysis of the impact of income and income inequalities on mortality in France. In order to introduce income in the fields of mortality analysis in France, this analysis is based on a case-control study constructed with two fiscal databases, the Wealth at Death Survey" and the "Taxable Income Survey". The determinants of the probability of dying in 1988 to the characteristics of people surviving in 1990. A first analysis, based on age at death distribution, shows that the survival function increases with income. The results of the case-control study show a continous impact of income on mortality, controlled for occupation. The results suggest a specific risk related to poverty and a strong protective effect of higher incomes. A multilevel analysis shows that the intra-regional level of household income inequality is positively correlated to the probability of dying, after control for regional health care supply. This thesis suggests that both individual socioeconomic status and socioeconomic environment are essential determinants of mortality in France

Full textThis doctoral dissertation is about the history of scientific practices at the International Labor Organization between 1920 and 1939. They are considered as a moment of convergence between both scientific and political concerns, aimed at establishing an international moral that would be based on social sciences. We set the general organization of research at ILO, tracked civil servants and scientists trajectories, analyzed their discourses on science and scientificity. We then turned more particularly on an epistemological and political study of the "Enquiry on production", with a special focus on scientific collaborations which helped leading the enquiry. These activities are deepened through a history of statistical thinking and social sciences. On the one hand, we paid a sustained attention to the intellectual and scientific contribution to ILO's work of four disciples of the French sociologist Emile Durkheim. On the other hand, and conversely, we also looked at the moral role that was attributed to ILO by these scientists within their intellectual durkheimian's framework. This peculiar moment of interaction between science and action allows us to write a unique story which intertwines a history of administrative savoir-faire with a history of social sciences in the interwar
