Abstract:
V syntetické kapitole porovnám získaná data a vyvodím závěry položených hypotéz. Dále nastíním důvody akcelerující úrovně výdajů na zdravotní péči v USA a porovnám řadu ekonomických i medicínských ukazatelů s průměry zemí OECD. V závěru práce shrnu zjištěné výsledky a pokusím se nastínit optimální výši výdajů vzhledem k úrovni zdravotního stavu populace.

Wheaton, Sarah M. "Sakurai's Object : a rapidly evolving star." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Physics and Astronomy, 1998. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/7942.

Full text
Abstract:
Sakurai's Object provides an exciting opportunity to study stellar evolution in real time. This rapidly evolving star discovered in early 1996 by Yukio Sakurai has been observed throughout 1997, and photometric observations are available for 1996. During this period it decreased in temperature from 7800K to 5200K, and increased in luminosity by a factor of 4. The temperature became low enough for a significant amount of carbon containing molecules to form and the star's spectral type changed from a G supergiant to a C-R3 supergiant. The change in temperature and luminosity is consistent with the object expanding from 40R⊙ to 200R⊙. The temperature and-luminosity calculated for a distance of 8kpc locate Sakurai's Object at the coolest extent of the final flash evolutionary track for a 0.6 M⊙ planetary nebula nucleus. At the end of the 1997 observing season Sakurai's Object was still increasing in luminosity. It is expected that eventually this increase will cease and the object will evolve at constant luminosity back to higher temperatures.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates the modelling of massive protostellar envelopes in dust and molecular emission. A detailed study is undertaken for a sample of 30 targets believed to contain young high-mass protostars. SCUBA observations of the dust emission are used to help distinguish between the genuine high-mass protostars and clusters of lower mass protostars. Using the single power-law density structure, models are found that fit 16 sources, that are well-separated from other sources, in half of the 30 target regions. Indices of the power-law profiles are compared to values obtained from the literature. The distributions of the indices are similar but there are differences in the underlying distributions which show that observations at longer wavelengths give generally steeper profiles. Investigating the underlying nature of the sources between the fitted and non-fitted sources shows some interesting differences between the groups. These differences indicate that the modelled sources are more likely to be massive protostars while the other sources are probably lower mass protostars. Single power-law modelling is also used to investigate molecular emission in a second group of targets from the RMS survey. Dust models are obtained for six of the sources which show similar results to the sources described above. Molecular line emission from the targets is mapped and compared to the dust emission which shows they trace the same regions. The dust models are used as a basis to obtain the molecular abundances for the sources. Abundances from the modelling the lines are broadly similar values to those observed in other high-mass protostars and association with radio and maser emission indicates that high-mass star formation is definitely occurring in some of these regions.

Abstract:
This work establishes demonstration object of close-to-nature management in Šumava National Park. Demonstration object represents habitats of acidophilous beech-spruce forests. Considering that spruce forests occur in unnatural proportion in even-aged monocultures, there has been proposed reconstruction of current forest stands in structurally rich forests. This work analyses initial state of the forest stands and present forestry management, including grazing management which is a necessary step for suitable management proposal. Detail monitoring takes place on specified parts of demonstration object. Six permanent round-shaped plots were established, each of 0,1ha. Three of the plots are localized in 31 years old pole timber stand without any stand tending. Conversion by stabilizing thinning has been started here, using the method of target trees. Thinning focused on stability support, because the forest stands were significantly damaged by grazing. Other three permanent plots are localized in 61 years old tended forest stands. Thinning is recommended in these sites as well to support stability of forest stand and support of future target trees.

HARTIGAN, PATRICK MICHAEL. "OBSERVATIONS AND BOWSHOCK MODELS OF HERBIG-HARO OBJECTS (STAR FORMATION, BIPOLAR OUTFLOWS)." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1987. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/184022.

Full text
Abstract:
Herbig-Haro (HH) objects are small nebulous regions of shock excited gas associated with bipolar outflows from newly formed stars. This dissertation presents an extensive set of observational data on Herbig-Haro objects, including deep CCD images, medium resolution long-slit spectra, and high resolution echelle spectra. The CCD survey indicates that HH objects cannot be identified reliably on the basis of morphology alone. The spectral line data show that HH objects exhibit enormous linewidths even though the objects are only about 1500 AU in size. The spectra sometimes have two velocity peaks, and show spatial separation of the high and low radial velocity gas. A radiative bowshock model constructed from a series of planar shock models accounts for the large linewidths, unusual line profiles, line ratios, and spatial structure seen in HH objects. A simple formula is derived that relates the shock velocity and orientation angle of a radiating bowshock to the observed maximum and minimum radial velocities seen in a line profile. The bowshock forms around a 'bullet' of material ejected from the forming star. The most likely acceleration mechanism for the bullet seems to be a breakup of a collimated stellar jet.

Abstract:
Studying the interplay of accretion and star formation is crucial to our understanding of galaxy evolution. The new generation of radio surveys are able to play a key role in this area, since both processes produce radio emission. As we probe low radio-luminosities, the two main populations are star-forming galaxies and radio-quiet quasars (RQQs). How they contribute to the total radio emission is under debate, with previous authors arguing that star formation dominates. In this thesis I investigate the relative levels of radio emission due to accretion and star formation in RQQs. Firstly, I select a sample of 74 quasars from the VISTA Deep Extragalactic Observations (VIDEO) survey, whose depth allows me to study very low accretion rates and/or lower-mass black holes. By comparing radio emission from the quasars with that from a control sample of galaxies, and calculating two independent estimates of star-formation rate, I show that this emission is predominantly related to the accretion process. A second sample of 72 RQQs is obtained from the Spitzer-Herschel Active Galaxy Survey, spanning a factor of ~100 in optical luminosity over a narrow redshift range at z~1. This enables evolutionary effects to be decoupled when comparisons are made with the VIDEO sample. I reduce radio data from the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (JVLA) for these objects, and find further support that accretion makes a significant contribution to the radio emission in RQQs. In addition, the levels of accretion and star formation appear to be weakly correlated with each other, and with optical luminosity. These findings offer an insight into how the mechanisms behind galaxy evolution may interact differently in RQQs compared to their radio-loud counterparts. They also have important implications for modelling radio populations below 1mJy, which is necessary for the development of the Square Kilometre Array.

Ionnidis, G. "Statistics of YSO jets in the galactic plane from UWISH2." Thesis, University of Kent, 2013. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.653050.

Abstract:
In order to study jets and outflows from Young Stellar Objects (YSOs), I performed an unbiased search on a continuous 33 square degree sized region in Serpens and Aquila using data taken from the UWISH2 survey, which uses the 1-0 S(I) emission line ofH2 as a tracer. I identified 130 molecular hydrogen outflows from YSOs from which 120 (92 %) objects are new discoveries. Distances were measured by foreground star counts with an accuracy of25 %. Outflows were found in groups of 3 - 5 members with a size of about 5 pc. Groups were separated by about half a degree on the sky. About half of the objects were assigned with potential source candidates. Brighter MHOs had a higher probability to have a source candidate assigned to them. I find an over abundance of outflows with position angles between 1300 and 1500 which is almost perpendicular to the Galactic Plane. The fraction of parsec scale outflows is about 25 % which is more than twice compared to the one found in Orion A by Stanke et al. (2002) and Davis et al. (2009). The outflows are not able to provide a sufficient fraction of energy and momentum to support the turbulence levels in their surrounding molecular clouds. The typical dynamical jet age was of the order of 104 yrs, while groups of emission knots are ejected every 103 yrs. This indicates that low level accretion rate fluctuations and not Fu-Ori type events are responsible for the episodic ej ection of material. The luminosity distribution of the outflows shows a power law behaviour with N ex: LH;·9. The Milky Way star formation rate was estimated to more than 1.6 ± 0.4M0 yr-1 The Spectral Index Classification distribution plot of YSOs indicated that the number of outflows increases in line with a values and has a similar distribution to the one from Davis et al. (2009) from Orion A.

Mowat, Christopher. "Star formation in the Gould Belt : a submillimetre perspective." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/34652.

Abstract:
This thesis presents my work characterising star formation in Gould Belt molecular clouds using submillimetre observations from SCUBA-2 on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT). I use these observations alongside data from previously published surveys using instruments including the Spitzer Space Telescope. I investigate the effect of including submillimetre data on the numbers, classifications and lifetimes of Young Stellar Objects (YSOs) in Gould Belt molecular clouds, particularly protostars. Following a literature review, I use SCUBA-2 450 and 850 μm observations to characterise star formation in the Lupus I molecular cloud. A total of eleven previously identified YSOs are detected with SCUBA-2, as well as eleven starless cores. Two cores have masses greater than the Jeans mass, and one has a virial parameter of 1.1 0.4, meaning these cores could be unstable against collapse. I use submillimetre emission to calculate disk masses, and find that one YSO has a disk mass greater than the minimum mass solar nebula. I find that Lupus I has a high percentage of both protostars and Very Low Luminosity Objects (VeLLOs). I also fit YSO Spectral Energy Distributions (SEDs) with models, allowing protostellar envelope masses and temperatures to be calculated, and interstellar extinction to be constrained for some YSOs. The signs of recent and future star formation support the hypothesis that a shock has triggered a star forming event in Lupus I. I also use SCUBA-2 data in conjunction with archival Spitzer and Herschel data to produce SEDs for five new candidate First Hydrostatic Cores (FHSCs) in Serpens South. These observations were then fit with models by the first author of this work, Alison Young. This work was able to identify two of the FHSC candidates as probable FHSCs, and constrain the rotation rate and inclination of one of them. I use JCMT Gould Belt Survey (GBS) observations of ten molecular clouds to produce an updated catalogue of protostars in these clouds. I use the FellWalker algorithm to find individual sources in the SCUBA-2 maps, and match them to the Spitzer YSO catalogue of Dunham et al. (2015). I use bolometric temperature to classify 362 out of 592 candidates as Class 0 or Class I protostars - a factor of two increase compared to the Spitzer catalogue due to improved submillimetre coverage. I find that protostellar lifetimes of 0.59 – 0.89 Myr - approximately 25 % longer than previously estimated. I also calculate protostellar luminosities, envelope masses, and envelope temperatures, and examine the distributions. Finally, I newly identify 19 protostars as VeLLOs, and increase the number of known VeLLOs in these clouds by a factor of two.

Abstract:
Besides being sources of gravitational waves, there has been evidence that neutron starmergers release neutron-rich material suitable for the production of heavy r-process nuclei. The radioactive decay of these freshly synthesised elements powers a rapidly evolvingthermal transient, the “macronova” (also known as “kilonova”). Its spectral propertiesstrongly depend on the ejecta composition, since neutron rich material synthesises heavyr-process elements that can efficiently trap radiation inside the ejecta producing a longlasting signal peaking in the red part of the spectrum. The first detection of a binaryneutron star merger was also accompanied by the evidence of a relativistic jet. Despitebeing ascertained the presence of these two dynamical components, neutron-rich ejectaand ultra-relativistic jet, the observational consequences of the interplay between the twois still unclear. In the paper we investigate such interaction through dedicated specialrelativistic hydrodynamic simulations, starting from a realistic environment obtained byprevious works. Light curves are then constructed up to the time scale of days by postprocessing the hydrodynamic results adopting proper radiative transfer. I show thatjet propagation within such environment can significantly affect the observation of theradioactive transient. A relativistic outflow can in fact “punch-away” a fraction of highopacity material before the brightening of the macronova, resulting in the transient beingbrighter and bluer for on-axis observers in the first few days. In this way the jet impactsboth time scale and luminosity of the macronova peak, that are the two main observablesallowing the estimate of the ejecta properties.

Abstract:
This work presents a search for galaxies at 6.5 < z < 9.8 based on the Lyman-break technique, using the latest HST WFC3 near-infrared data covering ∼ 150 arcmin^2 of the GOODS-South field. With these data, it is possible to find sufficient z ≈ 7−9 galaxies to fit both φ∗ and M∗ of the UV Schechter luminosity function. There is evidence for evolution in this luminosity function from z = 6−7 to z = 8−9, in the sense that there are fewer UV-bright galaxies at z ≈ 8 − 9, consistent with an evolution mainly in M∗. The candidate z ≈ 7 − 9 galaxies detected have insufficient ionizing flux to reionize the Universe, and it is probable that galaxies below our detection limit provide a significant UV contribution. The faint-end slope, α, is not well constrained. Adopting a similar faint-end slope to that determined at z = 3 − 6 (α = −1.7), and a Salpeter initial mass function, reionization could be achieved at z ≈ 7 for an escape fraction of ionizing photons fesc = 0.5 integrating the luminosity function down to M_UV= −15, while at z ≈ 8, for the same fesc, the ionizing photon budget still falls short even integrating down to M_UV = −8. A steeper faint end slope or a low-metallicity population (or a top-heavy IMF) might still provide sufficient photons for star-forming galaxies to reionize the Universe, but confirmation of this might have to await the James Webb Space Telescope.

Abstract:
Increasing demands for low heat losses and energy intensity of a building influence energy calculations. Higher demands are placed on the accuracy of the calculations. An important part of the thermal engineering calculations is the determination of the correct boundary conditions. An important input factor is primarily the indoor and outdoor environment, and temperature is the most important parameter for these types of enviromnent. It is not always the temperature of the external environment, but the environment that is adjacent to the soil or to unheated or differently heated spaces. The possibilities of modeling temperatures below the object are described in the standard ČSN EN ISO 10211. This standard specifies details for a geometric model for the numerical calculation of heat flows to assess the total heat loss of buildings or parts thereof, as well as to derive linear and point heat transfer factors. Furthermore, to calculate minimum surface temperatures to assess the risk of surface condensation and to determine the surface temperature factors. These are two different computational models. Therefore, it would be appropriate to simplify these calculations by simplifying the boundary conditions, namely to conduct an isotherm at a certain level below the terrain, which will be considered as a boundary condition, which is also based on long-term experience with "frost-free" depth. This calculation would be unambiguous, clear and simple.

Abstract:
This thesis presents a detailed study of the impact of radio-AGN on star formation and the interstellar medium (ISM) of galaxies across cosmic time. To do this, this thesis uses far-IR/sub-mm data from the Herschel Space Observatory. I create a well-selected sample of 1599 radio sources using the NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS) and Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty-Centimeters (FIRST) data in combination with the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey - Large Area Survey (UKIDSS - LAS) data. I find that the far-IR luminosities and dust temperatures of radio galaxies are lower in comparison to those of non-radio-detected galaxies. This luminosity deficit grows with increasing stellar mass. I argue that the reasons for these differences is probably due to indirect radio-AGN feedback, i.e. radio jets mechanically heat the halo-environment, preventing external sources of cold gas from entering the host and forming stars. The far-IR luminosity and dust temperature is found to decrease as a function of radio source size. I find the most likely explanation for this is jet-induced star formation while the jets are confined to the ISM. Finally, a method for identifying reliable high-z, star-bursting radio sources in the H-ATLAS is described with which statistically significant studies of radio-jet induced star formation may be undertaken.

Abstract:
The planned language Esperanto achieved popularity in early twentieth century Japan, inspiring a national movement which was the largest outside Europe. Esperanto was designed to facilitate greater international and inter-cultural communication and understanding; the history of the language in Japan reveals a rich tradition of internationalism in Japan, stretching from the beginnings of the movement, in the wake of the Russo-Japanese war, through the end of the Pacific war, when, for a brief period, organised Esperanto in Japan ceased. Building upon existing studies of internationalism amongst elite opinion makers in Japan, this history of Esperanto reveals unexpected examples of internationalism amongst the broader Japanese public, a number of competing conceptions of the international world, and their realisation through a range of transnational activities. Esperanto was at once an intellectual phenomenon, and a language which could be put into immediate and concrete practice. The diversity of social groups and intellectual positions within the Japanese Esperanto community reveals internationalism and cosmopolitanism, not as well defined, static concepts, but as broad spaces in which different ideas of the world and the community of mankind could be debated. What linked the various different groups and individuals drawn into the Japanese Esperanto movement was a shared desire to make contact with, and help to reform, the world beyond Japan's borders, as well as a shared realisation of the vital role of language in making this contact possible. From radical socialists to conservative academics, and from Japanese diplomats at the League of Nations to members of rural communities in the deep north of Japan, although their politics often differed, Japanese Esperantists came together to participate in the re-imagining of the modern world; in doing so they became part of a transnational community, one which reveals insights into both modern Japanese history, and the nature of internationalism.

Abstract:
Satellites commonly use onboard digital cameras, called star trackers. A star tracker determines the satellite's attitude, i.e. its orientation in space, by comparing star positions with databases of star patterns. In this thesis, I investigate the possibility of extending the functionality of star trackers to also detect the presence of resident space objects (RSO) orbiting the earth. RSO consist of both active satellites and orbital debris, such as inactive satellites, spent rocket stages and particles of different sizes. I implement and compare nine detection algorithms based on image analysis. The input is two hundred synthetic images, consisting of a portion of the night sky with added random Gaussian and banding noise. RSO, visible as faint lines in random positions, are added to half of the images. The algorithms are evaluated with respect to sensitivity (the true positive rate) and specificity (the true negative rate). Also, a difficulty metric encompassing execution times and computational complexity is used. The Laplacian of Gaussian algorithm outperforms the rest, with a sensitivity of 0.99, a specificity of 1 and a low difficulty. It is further tested to determine how its performance changes when varying parameters such as line length and noise strength. For high sensitivity, there is a lower limit in how faint the line can appear. Finally, I show that it is possible to use the extracted information to roughly estimate the orbit of the RSO. This can be accomplished using the Gaussian angles-only method. Three angular measurements of the RSO positions are needed, in addition to the times and the positions of the observer satellite. A computer architecture capable of image processing is needed for an onboard implementation of the method.
