Iredale, Peter David. "Investigation into unsteady valve flow in steam turbine inlet governing valves." Thesis, University of Leicester, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/30179.

Full text
Abstract:
When partially closed, steam turbine governing valves rely on flow separation from the valve head and seat to generate loss and throttle the flow. The aim of this type of valve is to avoid separation and therefore eliminate loss when the valve is fully open, and to have stable and controllable separations at all other valve lifts. Any significant unsteadiness in the valve flow can result in unacceptable mechanical vibration of the valve, which in extreme cases can lead to failure. Results will be discussed from work that has been undertaken into valve flow instabilities at Leicester University Engineering Department in collaboration with Alstom Energy Ltd. At high lifts, the Mach number of the steam flow between the head and the seat is sufficiently low for the fluid to be considered as incompressible. Water was therefore used as the working fluid in the tests at Leicester to model accurately the flow in a fifth scale acrylic model valve under high lift conditions. Results from laser light sheet visualisation, Particle Image Velocimetry and transient pressure measurements of the valve flow are presented. Laser light sheet illumination and high-speed Cine photography have been used to visualise the highly three dimensional valve flow. A range of valve head geometries has been tested. The results of the flow visualisation show the presence of stable and unstable separation zones and their influence on the valve flow. Particle Image Velocimetry has provided quantitative information on these features. Methods for stabilising the separation zones by modifying the valve head and seat have also been investigated and the results from these tests have shown improvements in reducing valve exit pipe unsteadiness.

This Master thesis is a project commissioned by the Swedish company Ranotor AB. The objective of this thesis is to develop a conceptual solution for a rotary valve mechanism that has to work efficiently in a high-temperature and high-pressure environment. The valve is to operate at high rotational speeds which calls for very short opening time.Modern engineering tools namely Solidworks, Ansys and Matlab, were employed for modelling and analysis of the conceptual solution. The best design solution was selected from three developed concepts, and the selected concept was further developed and optimized. Major material candidates and gas-tight sealing solution were identified and evaluated and the optimal material and seal design was chosen. Optimization of the individual components as well as the whole assembly was performed based on stress, thermal and dynamic analysis. The given design specifications and functions were fulfilled and the results were satisfactory. The obtained results provide a theoretical foundation for the development and application of a rotary valve in high-temperature and high-pressure environment.

Novak, Luke Michael. "Numerical Investigation of Vibration in a Steam Turbine Control Valve." Thesis, North Dakota State University, 2017. https://hdl.handle.net/10365/28042.

Full text
Abstract:
A numerical analysis is performed at North Dakota State University to investigate and resolve steam inlet control valve vibration in a Minnkota Power Cooperative turbine. Pressure fluctuations resulting from an unstable flow pattern are found to cause vibration. Multiple valve disc and seat design modifications to stabilize the flow are made and tested. The full scale geometry is used with steam as the working material. Both steady-state and transient analyses are completed. Analytical calculations are used for verification. Investigation of all modifications is discussed. Results from the original valve configuration show vortex shedding off of the disc. A currently installed cutoff disc has not removed flow-induced vibration. Flow expansion generates unstable flow, creating an unsteady separation bubble on the valve seat at the throat exit. Changing the throat from a converging-diverging to a purely converging nozzle stabilizes the flow, removing the flow-induced pressure forces causing disc vibration.

Abstract:
A novel compact steam engine design could be used to replace current combustion engines in the rapidly changing world of renewable energy. Especially with the increased research into alternative fuels such as hydrogen fuel cells and methane, which would vastly improve the efficiency of a steam engine. The thesis focuses on a rotating valve chamber, which is made up of an actuating mechanism, a sealing mechanism, a rotating valve, and its housing. The modern steam engine cannot operate on conventional oil lubrication because it would degrade and clog the steam engine’s micro tubes, making it even more complex due to the rise of tribological issues. As a result, the most difficult challenge is selecting compatible materials for the components in this chamber, which is also subjected to temperatures of 450 degrees Celsius and pressures of up to 25 MPa. In order for the shaft to translate and rotate at the same time, an actuating mechanism was required. Finally, a sealing solution that can withstand the harsh conditions. As a result, a material research followed by material testing using a test rig yielded comparable results across a laser microscope. Furthermore, the actuating mechanism was designed in Solid edge, and structural analysis was conducted in Ansys that was used to validate the optimizations. For ease of understanding, the final design was 3D printed.

Sors, Felix, and Patrik Holm. "Development of Steam Turbine Inlet Control Valve for Supercritical Pressure at Siemens Industrial Turbomachinery AB." Thesis, Linköping University, Machine Design, 2010. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-57805.

Full text
Abstract:

The development in the steam turbine business is heading for applications with much higher steam parameters since this enables a raised efficiency. Steam parameters refer to the pressure and the temperature of the steam. The aim of this study was to generate concepts for steam turbine inlet control valves designed for higher pressure and temperature in comparison with the present design. Future steam power plants using solar energy, based on tower technology, request this kind of performance and are an important potential market.

This master thesis at Linköping University has been written in collaboration with Siemens Industrial Turbomachinery AB. The performed work has incorporated literature studies, functional analysis and solid mechanics analysis, flow analysis, evaluation of sealings and cup springs and development of the dimensioning data for the future control valve. The aim was to find a design concept that sustains the new and higher steam parameters and is tolerant concerning vibrations.

A systematical way to work has been applied during the project and a detailed planning was continuously followed and adjusted. Major methods used were product design specification, quality function deployment, morphological matrices, decision matrices and failure mode and effect analysis. Important programs used during the project were Pro/ENGINEER, MATLAB, FloEFD and MS Excel.

Today’s valves are dimensioned for much lower performance than the new requirements in terms of pressure and temperature. The main problem for the present design is that the opening and closing forces requirements, with the new higher pressure, get unreasonably large. Therefore were many of the developed concepts equipped with a pressure balancing feature. This feature also gives another desirable result; the vibrations (that is the source of many of the problems with the present design) will also be reduced.

During the early concept development phase, 15 different concepts were generated and after the concept evaluation only three concepts remained. These concepts were further developed in different areas of interest and finally one of the three was chosen to be the winning concept. The new valve design will most likely meet the requirements and has the potential to be refined for even higher pressure for future demands.

Abstract:

This thesis was preformed at Siemens Industrial Turbomachinery AB in Finspång. The work is to make modernizations of steam turbine valves. The first part of the project is to modernize stem packing with the purpose to find a more reliable and space-saving solution that is less sensitive to vibrations. The second part is to find an alternative solution for cup springs in servomotors. A new spring type is desirable to increase the lifetime, lower the wear on stem shafts and to make it more space-saving.

To be able to perform the task efficiently and organized a method for systematic design has been used. This method has turned out to be quite useful tool in order to find new approaches to problems. Calculations of steam forces in a valve together with different types of box packing and springs have been done.

The modernization of stem packing has resulted in a new type of box packing. The winnings of changing packing are lowered friction and need of maintenance. Two solutions of live load systems have been created. Both solutions minimize the need of maintenance and make the mount and dismount easier. An indication makes sure that a sufficient force is applied on the box packing.

An analysis shows no alternative to replace the existing cup springs. The main goal was changed and modifications were made to improve the cup springs. The modifications results in a lowered wear and a significant increase of cup spring lifetime.

Polton, Cheriska. "Detailed model for robust feedback design of main steam temperatures in coal fired boilers." Master's thesis, Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/32972.

Full text
Abstract:
Main steam temperatures play a significant role in large coal fired power plant operation. Ideally, main steam temperatures should be accurately controlled to protect the thick wall components against long term overheating and thermal stress while meeting the design conditions at the steam turbine inlet. Although high steam temperatures are beneficial for thermal efficiency, it accelerates creep damage in high temperature components which is detrimental to the life of components. Alternatively, low steam temperatures increase the moisture content at the last stage blades of the turbine, causing the blades to deteriorate and fail. Control of the outlet steam temperature according to design conditions at variable loads is maintained via a balance between heat input (flue gas temperature and mass flow rate), evaporator outlet steam mass flow and spray water. The present control philosophy accuracy of main steam temperatures at an Eskom coal fired power plant was evaluated and compared to the latest technology and control strategies. Improving and optimizing steam temperature controls ensures design efficiency while maintaining long term plant health. The level of spatial discretization applied in simplifying the real boiler for modelling purposes was approached at a relatively high level. The intention was to model normal operating conditions and certain transients such as variable heat input and load changes to see its effect on steam temperatures and to be able to evaluate the performance of different temperature control techniques. The main outcome of this project was to design a robust control system for a dynamic model of the boiler using sets of low order linear models to account for uncertainty. The main concepts, models and theories used in the development of this dissertation include: 1) A detailed thermo-fluid model developed using Flownex to have high fidelity models of the process under varying operating conditions. This model was used to test and evaluate the robust controller design. 2) System Identification in Matlab to construct mathematical models of dynamic systems from measured inputoutput data and identify linear continuous time transfer functions under all operating conditions [1]. 3) Quantitative Feedback Theory (QFT) to design controllers for an attemperator control system at various onload operating conditions. This design was used understand the engineering requirements and seeks to design fixed gain controllers that will give desired performance under all operating conditions. 4) The design of a valve position controller to increase the heat uptake in a convective pass, thereby improving efficiency: Excessive attemperation in the superheater passes is generally associated with high flue gas temperatures which decrease thermal efficiency. Therefore, robust control of the attemperation system leads to an increase in heat uptake between the flue gas and steam in the boiler, resulting in a reduction in the flue gas temperature leaving the boiler, thus improving efficiency. The robust QFT controllers were set up using the valve position control technique and were used to confirm the improvement of control performance. The theories mentioned above were used to understand the control performance under varying plant conditions using a standard cascaded arrangement. It incorporated robust control design and engineering requirements such as bandwidth, plant life, spray water and thermodynamic efficiency. The control effort allocated to each superheaterattemperator subsystem in the convective pass was designed as a multi-loop problem.

Abstract:
This report is a bachelor thesis at Karlstad University in collaboration with Invencon AB and Ranotor AB. The goal was to analyze a rotating valve leading water vapor through an inlet and five outlets. The quantifiable results that were addressed in this project are the mass flow through the outlets and the forces affecting the valve and its shaft (primarily radial forces). The tools used for this project are PTC Creo and ANSA for modelling and mesh as well as ANSYS-CFX and Matlab for computational help. The results show that the specified rotational speed of 4600 rpm doesn’t work for this model. The rotational speed was chosen because of an interest in this specific operating condition. A 3 mm radial gap between the rotating valve and the valve housing proved to cause a leakage in the form of pressure loss inside the valve. The boundary conditions that were laid out for this project are not valid for this operating condition. Since the difference in pressure is large (100 down to 1 bar) the flow is choked. A large difference in pressure also makes it important to adjust the total area of the outlets, since the pressure drop affects the density of the vapor. The forces on the rotating valve that were calculated (using ANSYS-CFX) create a foundation for choosing bearings for the valve. If the construction is modified, and/or the rotating valve will operate at a different rotational speed these forces will be subject to change.

Abstract:
The use of check valves in the nuclear industry is of great importance from a safety precaution point ofview (McElhaney, 1995). Choosing check valves for these high-pressurized systems comes with agreat challenge. The valves causes what is called check valve slams when closing, leading to a hugepressure wave traveling through the system. To prevent this from happening calculations have to bedone to see what kind of forces are generated during a check valve slam. When the forces are known itis easier designing systems that will endure these slams. A commonly used software in the nuclearindustry is RELAP5 (Reactor Excursion and Leak Analysis Program), its main purpose is to calculatetransients in piping systems. This program can also be used when calculating a check valve slam. Buthow precise is the code compared to the real event? By doing an experiment measuring pressures created by swing check valves during slams, the codewas compared to real data and analyzed to decide what was of importance when modeling for thesetypes of simulations. The RELAP5 code was not initially designed to calculate transients during a check valve slam. This isclearly shown when the code overestimates the pressure waves in the system when using themanufacturer data for the check valve model. Matching the data from the simulations in RELAP5 withthe data recorded from the experiment is not easy. The parameters used for this have no connection tothe specifications for the check valve, which means that transients are hard to estimate withoutexperimental data.

Abstract:

The steam generator in a nuclear power plant plays an important role in cooling the reactor and producing steam for the turbine-generators. As a result, control of the water inventory in the steam generator is crucial. The water mass in the steam generator cannot be measured directly, so the water mass is generally inferred from the downcomer differential pressure as a measure of the downcomer water level. The water level in the downcomer is a good indication of the water mass inventory at or near steady-state conditions. Conventional PI controllers are used to maintain the water level in the downcomer between relatively narrow limits to prevent excessive moisture carryover into the turbine or the uncovering of the tube bundle. Complications arise in level control with respect to mass inventory due to the short-term inverse response of downcomer level. This is also known as shrink and swell. Due to the complications that arise from level control, one would like to directly control the mass inventory in the steam generator. Currently, the mass inventory is not a measurable quantity, but through the use of computer simulation can be calculated. Design and analysis of the new controller will be performed by simulation. The focus of this research was to develop and design, test, and implement a liquid mass inventory controller that would allow for safe automatic operation during normal and accident scenarios. In designing the new controller, it is assumed that the normal plant safety functions are not impacted by the mass controller. Optimal settings for the new mass controller are sought such that the mass control program will have rapid response and avoid reactor trips under automatic control if the downcomer level protection setpoints do not induce a trip for the same transient. For future analysis, it is proposed that neural networks be used in water mass observer instead of calculated simulation results.

One of Company X's many services is to refurbish systems at regular intervals during their use. Quick turnaround times are of the utmost importance both to keep Company X's costs low and to ensure the systems are returned to perform their services in the field as rapidly as possible. This research had two distinct elements in service to accelerated turnaround times: 1) Improving inventory management practices to align with the need for replacements for failed parts to reduce cycle times, and 2) Diagnosing the reasons for and developing mitigations against failures in the blind mating of two connectors. Regarding the first element of the research performed, Company X hypothesized that improving the inventory management system would yield shorter cycle times. In order to test this hypothesis, part failure and inventory histories needed to be compared to confirm if parts were not in stock at the time of failure. A model was developed to analyze both of these history files but the poor quality of the data precluded accurate conclusions from being drawn. Once the data input methods have controls placed on them, the model will serve to accurately represent the failure rates and types of failures of all parts, allowing for proper stocking of inventory needed to service these failures. An investigation of process failure rates and their impact on cycle time was also conducted. This analysis included quantifying how many times each operation was performed, at which steps failures occurred or were noticed most, and how much time was required to complete each operation and service each failure. This analysis ultimately yielded the generation of a diagnostic tool with a flexibility that allowed simultaneous analysis to be performed on over 1,100 operations. One of the key insights generated by using this tool was that the majority of failures are found at late-stage inspections, highlighting that improving the thoroughness of early-stage inspections could prevent the necessity of substantial rework to remedy the issues found late in the process. With respect to the second element of the research performed, an understanding of why and how connectors were failing was sought out. Through observing the process and analyzing the historical data detailing the connector's failure modes, multiple explanations for the failures and related solutions resulted. The first failure mode was loose connections, for which a tool was shortened to increase the operator's ease of accessing the connector to properly apply torque and secure the connection. The other modes of failure were caused due to connector misalignment, for which a bracket was redesigned as an auto-alignment feature to aid in the mating process, and operator deviations from the work instructions were addressed as they pertained to connector failures. The combination of these actions are expected to yield an annual savings of $100,000, net of costs.

Abstract:
Value stream mapping (VSM) is a visualization tool helps to understand processes by using of stream lined work process. The importance of this process is to decrease the activity that does not add value to the final product and in order to increase the efficiency and production.   The purpose of this thesis is to create dynamic value stream maps of a process by using simulation. By creating dynamic value stream maps makes it possible to analyze more complex systems than traditional VSM. Simulation can be used with value stream mapping to give it power and flexibility in order to dynamically change the state of the system.   The spiral welding production line has been working for many years. The company is facing an increase in the demand along with possibilities of later product development so that they could get more efficiency, less costs, higher quality, and a dynamic workforce plan according to the varying demand. This cannot be achieved unless studying the process inside out and finding new areas that have the potential for improvement. In this thesis I have tried to investigating these areas and the focus is on finding solutions for improving them.   This thesis work performs at the production process of spiral welding steel plates for analysis the buffers, calculate cycle, process time and reduce waste by using VSM and DVSM. It has been trying to provide readers with a clear prospective of the company, a precise analysis on the mentioned production line and apparently areas of improvement in the production process.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Background: Volvo Cars Body Components (VCBC) manufactures and supply body parts for Volvo Cars. It is six years since VCBC began the implementation of lean production. VCBC is using traditional accounting methods to calculate the production costs. Some employees at VCBC consider that the company has problems with high stocks of raw material, overproduction, and trouble seeing relation between costs. One value stream where improvements can be made is at “Flöde 1” at VCBC. As Maskell et al. (2011) say that the problems might be a result from the effects of the combination between lean production and traditional accounting methods. Maskell et al. (2011) argue that costs in lean should be calculated for the entire value stream. A model that makes so and who Maskell et al. (2011) believes should be used in lean is value stream costing. Purpose: This study aims to identify the costs that should be included in a value stream costing-model for VCBC. Furthermore, the study aims to calculate the total cost for “Flöde 1” by using the first research question. Last the study will investigate what the value stream costing model would mean if VCBC includes the method in their lean work. Methodology: The study was performed by using a qualitative research method. Since we used a interventionist research in which we applied action science it was obvious to use case study as a research design. For data collection, we used documents, archival records, interviews and direct observations. Conclusions: The costs that should be included in a value stream costing model for VCBC are; property cost, material cost, depreciation, capital cost, labor cost, costs for leasing and IT cost. If VCBC apply value stream costing it will result in the annual cost for “Flöde 1” to be; 3 277 524 SEK. If VCBC would implement value stream costing it will primary mean that VCBC can get better understanding for their value streams and by this create a better flow. Furthermore, VCBC does not need to track historically data but instead follow-up on a weekly basis to make changes before it is too late. Another change for VCBC if they implement value stream costing is that they have to evaluate their machines so they keep the physical capacity in mind, and that the cost per product will be decreased from 98 SEK to 70 SEK.

Bapeekee, Sulaiman Ahmed Sadeck. "Determining internal leakages of high pressure and temperature steam valves." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/24314.

Full text
Abstract:
Internal leakages of high pressure and temperature steam valves have been identified as a potential contributor to a loss in power generating plant efficiency. These losses are often neglected due to it being difficult to detect problematic valves and quantify the internal leakages through them. A non-intrusive NOT technique that detects and quantifies internal leakages through valves will be a very favourable tool to any power generating plant as it will allow for the early detection of internal leakages and could possibly provide considerable financial savings. This research evaluates different monitoring techniques suitable for detecting and quantifying internal leakages through valves and selects a technique that is most suitable for application in a power generating plant environment. The proposed technique utilises infra-red thermography to calculate pipe surface temperatures on a length of un-insulated pipe located downstream of a valve that is leaking internally. As the leakage steam flows through the length of un-insulated pipe, it will lose a portion of its heat energy through the pipe wall to the surrounding environment. This will result in a drop in temperature of the steam from the upstream to downstream points of the un-insulated length of pipe. By calculating the heat loss and the drop in temperature of the leakage steam, a mass flow rate of the leakage steam can be determined. A mathematical model was derived which with inputs of upstream and downstream pipe surface temperatures of the un-insulated pipe, pipe properties and ambient air conditions, calculates the heat loss, the temperature drop and the resulting mass flow rate of the leakage flow through the valve. A detailed experimental study was conducted to validate the proposed technique in determining internal leakages thought steam valves. Steam generated from a mini steam generating plant was allowed to flow through an experimental test rig, which contained a length of un-insulated pipe, at different flow rates. Pipe surface temperature measurements of the un-insulated pipe were made using an infrared thermal camera and a mass flow rate of the steam was calculated using the derived mathematical model. In all experiments, the mass flow rate calculated using the mathematical model was compared to a mass flow rate acquired from a flow measuring device installed in-line with the experimental test rig. The results indicate that an increase in mass flow rate causes an increase in pipe surface temperatures of the un-insulated pipe which translates to an increase in heat loss of the leakage steam through the length of un-insulated pipe. The mass flow rate calculated using the proposed technique closely approximates the mass flow rate acquired from the flow measuring device. This indicates that the proposed technique, using infrared thermography, is capable of detecting and quantifying possible internal valve leakages encountered in online operation. Onsite tests were performed using the proposed technique on two different boiler drain valves at Majuba Power Station. It was found that one of the valves was internally leaking steam to the atmosphere at a rate of 0.039 kg/s whilst the other valve was sealing correctly. A comprehensive financial impact study was conducted, and it was found that this leakage steam will result in a total loss of R 730 108 per annum if the leak is left unattended. This is the loss for a single valve that has a relatively small leak. The financial loss for a combination of all valves that are internally leaking in a power plant could be substantial and can clearly justify plant personnel in utilising the proposed technique to identify problematic valves. With its portability, non-intrusiveness and ease of use the proposed technique provides a cost-effective means to determine internal leakages through power plant valves.

The concepts of value and value stream are crucial to the philosophy of Lean, and a better understanding of how these concepts relate to product development (PD) is essential for the creation of a Lean PD strategy. This thesis focuses on value by looking at PD processes through two different value perspectives: Product Development Value Stream Mapping and Earned Value Management. Product Development Value Stream Maps (PDVSMs) were created for two different PD projects, and the tasks from the maps were analyzed for how they each create value. The official value measurement for the two projects, Earned Value Management System data, was analyzed and compared to the PDVSMs. This comparison of the two value perspectives proved valuable, as it showed that despite some misalignments, they are congruent. The comparison also highlighted several flaws in EVMS. Finally, a combined EVMS/PDVSM hybrid management tool is proposed and discussed.

Abstract:
Value Stream Mapping is a common tool used in a lot of instances in today’s industrieswho have adopted any kind of Lean initiatives. However, Value Stream Mapping (VSM) may not always fit to the best extent and intention of the industry applying it; therefore a need for tailoring certain aspects of it have been seen in some cases where the original tool has not been enough. However there is little research on how to adopt VSM towards the tire industry, it is the case that some adaptation is needed in order to fully map the value the chain is trying to capture as seen by some authors who use VSM on other industries. This leads to conclude that further research is needed in order to see the benefits and chal-lenges in the creating of a tailored value stream tool in order to understand how it would affect the company its applied on as well as increasing the knowledge of its capabilities and drivers for it application. The impact this research would have is to begin bridging a gap of the usage of how a Tai-lored Value Stream Mapping (TVSM) tool would affect when applied to a specific industry. For this paper, a case study within a Tire Company located in Europe, who stated that they had issues regarding their current usage and utilization of VSM, was conducted. The com-pany has projects going all over the globe but sees a lack of initiative and success without the direct involvement of its central plant. The purpose of this research is to investigate the perceived impact as well as the benefits and challenges of utilizing a company TVSM, in-stead of a standardized one, taking into consideration both particularities of the industry, as well as the culture of the firm. Also an understanding is sought to recognize the motiva-tions that drove the Tire Company to choose a tailored approach. The research was conducted as a qualitative single case study involving three different sitesbelonging to the tire industry located in Europe. It is built upon both a theoretical part, comprised by a literature review of the concepts of VSM, Lean and TVSM; and an empiri-cal part derived from the case. The Empirical data was collected through semi-structured interviews as well as participant observations, supported by secondary data collected from the company in form of written documents concerning the internal training of VSM. The findings concluded that, the reasons for sustaining a TVSM are its ease of use, and ability to reach out and be understood by people with little to no training in VSM’s. The company fitted training documents would decrease the training needed and the time spent doing so. Some other benefits were the empowerment of employees and the sharing of knowledge across multiple sites in a standardized company language. Albeit with the chal-lenge of creating and upholding such documents and training, compelling the company to have experts with knowledge of VSM and the company processes and culture with the added challenge of also maintaining regularly updates as the company moves forward. Implementation of a tailored approach is practical where there has been identified that it exists a gap between different plants or departments, local or globally, regarding knowledge or experience when there is a requirement for standardisation, communication and need for change.

Abstract:
The fields of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) lay the groundwork for much of the innovation driving society forward. Despite the contributions of these fields to society, women are chronically underrepresented in STEM careers. Could one cause for this underrepresentation lie in how these subjects are taught in school? The purpose of our study was to explore how methods of presenting educational material may affect retention and motivation of students, especially women. We predict that by increasing the presented communal value of a scientific topic (that is, how the topic can be applied to help others), participants’ retention and scientific motivation will increase. University-enrolled participants completed online pre-tests of content knowledge and motivation, then were randomly assigned to read one of three versions of a brief scientific article: Control (basic information presented), Increased Communal Value, or Increased Communal Value with Related Images. Participants then completed a knowledge and motivation post-test. The results of this study are under analysis. Expected outcomes include a main effect for communal value on outcomes of science motivation and retention, as well as interaction effects for gender (such that communal value impacts females’, more than males’, motivation and retention).

Abstract:
Due to a changing competitive environment, SMEs have to improve their production performance. A commonly applied philosophy to improve production performance is called lean thinking. This method, derived from the Toyota Production System, banishes wasteful activities while increasing the competitive strength and responsiveness of a company. Many companies fail in their attempt to become lean and therefore techniques are needed to guide the implementation. This thesis proposes to use Value Stream Mapping as an implementation technique for SMEs. This technique is tested in a company as a case study. By applying the Value Stream Mapping tool to a specific process within this company, substantial improvement potential is revealed. Work content can be decreased by 30,3 percent, and delivery time and in-factory lead time can be decreased by at least 38,6 percent and 68 percent respectively. The thesis concludes that lean thinking is applicable to SMEs, at least under certain circumstances. Furthermore, Value Stream Mapping can be a valuable tool in revealing improvement potential.

Abstract:
The Construction Tools & Organization (CTO) division of Atlas Copco India is growing and demonstrating positive business results, however, it is faced with challenges due to rapid growth. The production lead times are 25-30% longer than its sister factory in Kalmar, which causes excess inventory and unnecessary costs. There is a need for investigating how lead times can be reduced. The aim of this study was to develop suggestions on how production lead times can be reduced. The study used concepts of Lean Management and the Value Stream Mapping tool to analyze and examine value and non-value adding activities, to reduce wasteful operations, to improve quality within processes and to simplify and standardize working methods. Delimitations were set to investigate one single product component and product type; the CP1230 Breaker and CP1230 cylinder. Research approach was of deductive method, information gathering was done in the form of literature review, personal observations and interviews, i.e. qualitative and quantitative methods were used to reach the objectives. The analysis highlighted over-processing, excess transportation and inventory issues in the material flow and the following suggestions were concluded: • Enhance employee satisfaction by rotating personnel in different stations. • Visualize work methods and weekly planning on approachable boards to standardize work and ensure quality of outcome. • Reduce and eliminate inspection processes by training suppliers and sub-contractors in quality assurance. • Sequence material in honing operations to reduce change-over times. • Outsource heat treatment operations to save resources and lead time. The following recommendations would allow for a 24,6% or 68,3% reduction in lead time, depending on choosen solutions, according to the authors’ estimations. The study was a part of the MG202X: Master Degree Project in Industrial Engineering and Management of the Royal Institute of Technology and was conducted in Atlas Copco Nasik, India and Stockholm, Sweden. On-site analysis lasted for 12 weeks and the thesis was finalized in Stockholm for a total duration of 30 weeks.

Abstract:
This paper explores the concept of Value Stream Analysis and Mapping (VSA/M) as applied to Product Development (PD) efforts. Value Stream Analysis and Mapping is a method of business process improvement. The application of VSA/M began in the manufacturing community. PD efforts provide a different setting for the use of VSA/M. Site visits were made to nine major U.S. aerospace organizations. Interviews, discussions, and participatory events were used to gather data on (1) the sophistication of the tools used in PD process improvement efforts, (2) the lean context of the use of the tools, and (3) success of the efforts. It was found that all three factors were strongly correlated, suggesting success depends on both good tools and lean context. Finally, a general VSA/M method for PD activities is proposed. The method uses modified process mapping tools to analyze and improve process.

Abstract:
The Value Stream Mapping (VSM) is one of the Lean Production tools that has been widely discussed in the literature for mapping production processes and services with a focus on reduction of waste and non-value added time. Despite the growing number of publications on the subject, the academic literature reveals the absence of systematic research to present the state of the art. Thus, this dissertation, through a systematic and thorough review of the literature, aims to gather information on the VSM to identify its main characteristics, trends and opportunities for new developments and future research. The review includes 263 abstracts and 91 articles selected for review and classification. The study proposes a synthesis in the form of framework, presenting as VSM is adopted in certain contexts and motivations, tracing a better understanding of how the tool is implemented and their outputs and outcomes that can be generated. It was noticed that the VSM is rapidly spreading to the service sector, especially health care and logistics. However, studies have reported that the implementation of the VSM in practice is a time consuming process. Problems related to resistance in improvements involving changes in the workforce and demand for limited internal resources, have stimulated some researchers to question the use of the tool. This dissertation contributes to a better understanding of the topic and provides directions for future research and VSM practices.

Value stream mapping is a technique that uses icons to map the flow of product through a manufacturing system. These icons are aided by summary statistics to further detail the specific manufacturing system. The value stream mapping process usually consists of defining the current state of the system and then, using the principles of lean manufacturing, mapping an improved future system state. Although this is the popular technique, variants and refinements of it exist. This work examines the various techniques of value stream mapping and the methods used to evaluate value stream maps to improve manufacturing systems. The past and current research into value stream mapping and the methods to analyze these maps are compared and contrasted. A set of core analysis questions is developed that summarize the various value stream mapping methodologies. The application of these questions to an enhanced value stream map is developed as a tool, hybrid value stream mapping. Hybrid value stream mapping is then used to analyze the current state value stream map of a manufacturing process, the forging of automotive ring gears. The answers to the core analysis questions enabled the identification of weaknesses in the manufacture of ring gears and suggested system-wide problems. To further clarify and suggest means to rectify these weaknesses, methods beyond the scope of value stream mapping were utilized. By using systems based on standard inventory theory, economic production quantities, techniques to improve information visibility, and methods to enhance production equipment savings of over $4.7 million net present value were discovered for the ring gear production process.

This thesis explores of Value Stream Analysis and Mapping (VSA/M) as applied to Product Development (PD) efforts. It contains three parts: the background and history of PD VSA/M, a report of the current PD VSA/M practices within the U.S. aerospace industry, and the proposal of a general VSA/M method for Product Development activities. Value Stream Analysis and Mapping is a method used for business process and product improvement, which originated with the development of the Lean business philosophy. The VSA/M background section includes a brief history of the method as described in foundational Lean literature. As with Lean practices in general, the application of VSA/M began in the manufacturing community, and has seen excellent results. However, the engineering and design efforts of Product Development provide a unique setting for the use of VSA/M. The report of current PD VSA/M practices within the U.S. aerospace industry focuses on the research results taken from site visits to nine major Product Development sites. The VSA/M tools used at the sites are characterized and ranked in sophistication. The business context surrounding the use of the tools is also characterized and ranked. The reduction of the research data and this analysis shows the importance of both tool sophistication and the surrounding context in the success of a PD VSA/M exercise. The proposal of a general VSA/M method for Product Development activities includes an outline for implementation. This outline is supported with a discussion of associated principles and the application of selected tools. The proposed method follows a pattern of analyzing and mapping the Current State of a process, and using heuristics to analyze and map an improved Future State. The tools used to accomplish this analysis and mapping include (1) a high-level Gantt chart or Ward/LEI map, (2) a detailed-level Process Flow map, and (3) a detailed-level Design Structure Matrix.

Abstract:
In today's competitive world, companies focus on eliminating wastes to increase their profit, growth and ensure customer satisfaction. Among the known wastes, environmental wastes are typically the least considered. Organizations must comply with federal rules and regulations towards environmental friendly manufacturing. Lean Manufacturing provides opportunities for improving the environmental performance along a production line. This thesis discusses previous work performed in analyzing environmental impacts and wastes. Based on this previous work, a method is developed to assess and document the impact of environmental factors in a production line using a value stream map. This new approach to calculate the environmental factors of a manufacturing/assembly line and to incorporate the environmental factors in a value stream map is explained in detail with case studies. The result of the case studies as tested in a production line is discussed and concludes with significant opportunities for improvement if implemented in a large scale.

American Axle & Manufacturing, Inc. (AAM) is still in the process of transitioning to a culture of "lean manufacturing" as opposed to the current culture of "mass production". This thesis involved working with AAM employees and suppliers at various locations to understand how material flows between and within AAM's plants, the reasons for and analysis of the current state of material management, and opportunities for improvement. Attention is also given to the cultural and business context in which this work takes place, and the issues relating to efforts to implement change in large industrial organizations. This work produced two strategic-level products and one tactical-level product to improve lean material management at AAM described herein. Cultural observations are also provided. At the strategic level, one project focused upon making extended value stream maps of material flow between AAM plants and suppliers/processors. This information allows all decision-makers at AAM to objectively examine a common set of information, information which was previously unavailable to any one individual. Extended value stream mapping allowed supply chain inventory and lead time-reduction opportunities to be identified.
(cont.) The focus upon extended value streams increased awareness of the need to more fully account for costs in making part procurement decisions. Therefore, a second strategic project involved the development of a total cost decision tool, and its use in making sourcing decisions. This computer spreadsheet-based tool uses simple inputs to quickly produce a more all-encompassing estimate of the total costs of purchasing parts from a given supplier. Traditionally, only piece-price plus freight costs were used to determine sources of supply. Other, additional factors may alter the decision of which supplier to use if they are considered. The tactical-level project involved implementation of a lean pull system. This project involved coordinating teams at two separate axle shaft manufacturing plants to implement a more effective visual pull system between and within the plants, using lean concepts for material management and flow. A final aspect of the thesis was to examine the current business context in which the lean systems are to operate, as well as the strategic, cultural, and political aspects that influence change management in large organizations.
(cont.) One conclusion drawn from the internship is that the firm should start emphasizing visual control on the plant floor, and less supervisor work on paper in their offices after their shifts end. If the production boards and visual controls are in constant disarray, this needs to be resolved as quickly as a failed customer delivery, because it is fundamentally undercutting the ability of the organization to improve what it provides to customers through better quality and productivity. It also hinders efforts to reduce costs to bid for new work. Failing to attract new work is as damaging as a failed customer delivery, except that it will happen a year from now rather than today.

Understanding the overall impact of a decision in a manufacturing system can be challenging given the complex production and financial structures in today's companies. While knowing the direct result of a local change may be easy, anticipating the real impact to the rest of the business can be difficult. Nonetheless, managers are faced with this dilemma on a regular basis as they try to support the larger organization, taking appropriate actions as best they can. Based on a project at Novartis Vaccines and Diagnostics for an influenza vaccine, this thesis helps address some of the key questions managers face. It discusses a technique for more accurately determining the implications of these common manufacturing decisions: * How much should be spent to improve a particular component? * What are the impacts of expanding into new markets? " Which parameters in the factory most deserve managerial attention? * What are the appropriate tradeoffs to make when deciding on materials purchasing? Using concepts from throughput accounting, a model is developed from a detailed cost structure analysis, linking the financial and production aspects of the system. Whenever a parameter is changed, the model simulates how the rest of the system would perform through a linear program that replicates the production scheduling process. Thus, a manager is able to experiment with the tool in order to observe the overall impact of the change being considered and levy a decision based on the anticipated costs and benefits projected by the model. As a result, managers can distribute resources in a more efficient manner and align decision making throughout the organization. This thesis discusses the modeling approach, historical validation and initial insights for the current system. It also covers techniques for future applications and identifies the underlying organizational challenges that must be addressed to achieve a global optimum.

In June 2014 Brazil hosted the FIFA World Cup and in August 2016 Rio de Janeiro hosts the Summer Olympics. These two seminal sporting events will draw tens of thousands of air travelers through Brazil’s airports, airports that are currently in the midst of a national modernization program to address years of infrastructure neglect and insufficient capacity. Raising Brazil’s major airports up to the standards air travelers experience at major airports elsewhere in the world is more than just a case of building or remodeling facilities, processes must also be examined and reworked to enhance traveler experience and satisfaction. This research paper examines the key interface between airports and airline passengers—airport check-in procedures—according to how much value and waste there is associated with them. In particular, the paper makes use of a value stream mapping construct for services proposed by Martins, Cantanhede, and Jardim (2010). The uniqueness of this construct is that it attributes each activity with a certain percentage and magnitude of value or waste which can then be ordered and prioritized for improvement. Working against a fairly commonly expressed notion in Brazil that Brazil’s airports are inferior to the airports of economically advanced countries, the paper examines Rio’s two major airports, Galeão International and Santos Dumont in comparison to Washington D.C.’s Washington National and Dulles International airports. The paper seeks to accomplish three goals: - Determine whether there are differences in airport passenger check-in procedures between U.S. and Brazilian airports in terms of passenger value - Present options for Brazilian government or private sector authorities to consider adopting or implementing at Brazilian airports to maximize passenger value - Validate the Martins et al. construct for use in evaluating the airport check-in procedures Observations and analysis proved surprising in that all airports and service providers follow essentially the same check-in processes but execute them differently yet still result in similar overall performance in terms of value and waste. Although only a few activities are categorized as completely wasteful (and therefore removed in the revised value stream map of check-in activities), the weighting and categorization of individual activities according to their value (or waste) presents decision-makers a means to prioritize possible corrective actions. Various overall recommendations are presented based on this analysis. Most importantly, this paper demonstrates the viability of using the construct developed by Martins et al to examine airport operations, as well as its applicability to the study of other service industry processes.
