Abstract:
During the 19 September 2017 earthquake, steel buildings in the States of Morelos, Puebla, Mexico, and Mexico City were subjected to severe ground shaking. Despite in some cases, moderate damages in non-structural elements were developed; generally, null or minor structural damage was reported. The notable exceptions are (1) a three-stories building located at the southern area of Mexico City and (2) some schools near to the epicentral region in the State of Morelos. The behavior of these buildings is analyzed in detail. Conclusions are drawn on the demands imposed on steel structures consider

During the September 19, 1985 earthquake about 60 post-1957 multistory steel buildings in Mexico City were subjected to a severe test. In most cases, the damage in the post-1957 structures was minor to moderate. The notable exception is the Pino Suarez complex in which one 21-story building collapsed onto a 14-story building, and two other 21-story buildings were severely damaged. The behavior of these buildings as well as two other case studies are analyzed. Conclusions are drawn on the ductility demands imposed on steel buildings in Mexico City, utilizing simplified structural models and con

Using the steel cofferdam of Xinzhao Pearl River Bridge in Guangzhou City as the engineering background, structural designing and size proposing of steel cofferdam are introduced briefly. To ensure structural safety, general purpose finite element software Ansys was used to analyze structural strength and stability. Load styles and boundary conditions were also discussed. 6 load cases with calculating model were presented.

The Kashima Rinkai Specified Sewage Works (KRSSW) is located at the northern side of the Kashima Coastal Industrial Zone, facing the Sea of Kashimanada (Pacific Ocean). It straddles one city and two townships: the city of Kashima, which boasts Kashima Port, a transportation center that was constructed on Kashimanada Beach by digging into the virgin sands, and the towns of Kamisu and Hasaki. The industries located there include steel, petrochemicals, chemicals, foodstuffs, livestock feeds, electric power and machinery metals. This article describes how cutting edge parametric-based engineering techniques have been used to achieve the detailed design of 2500 complex steelwork connections for the exoskeleton of the new City of Dreams hotel in Macau, China. It discusses the tools, methodology and strategy employed by the engineering team to automate the difficult and time-consuming process of creating, verifying and documenting the geometrically challenging, large-scale steel connections using finite element methods within an ambitious timescale of just 12 months.
