Potterton, Kristin. "A Study of the Seismic Performance of Early Multi-Story Steel Frame Structures with Unreinforced Masonry Infill." DigitalCommons@CalPoly, 2009. https://digitalcommons.calpoly.edu/theses/41.

Full text
Abstract:
Steel frame construction with unreinforced masonry infill walls is a common system found in high-rise structures built in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Recorded performance of this dual system during seismic events shows that the structures are able to resist a high level of lateral loads without collapse, primarily because a majority of damage is confined to the infill walls instead of the gravity carrying frame. To better understand expected performance of this structural system in different seismic risk regions, a prototypical building was analyzed using modal and nonli

Steel-Concrete-Steel (SCS) composite construction consists of two relatively thin steel plates with the space between filled with concrete. Various forms of this construction exist, using overlapping shear studs and single bar connectors to provide shear reinforcement to the concrete and provide a shear transfer at the interface. The problem with current systems that rely purely upon shear studs or bar connectors is that they are prone to slip between the steel faceplates and concrete core. This slip leads to a loss of composite action causing a loss of stiffness and a reduced fatigue life. An

To produce cast steel crankshafts, risering and gating systems are developed. Filling and solidification simulations of the steel crankshaft rigging are carried out to confirm that the rigging developed will produce a low porosity casting. A sand mold is created with Computer-aided design software, based on the developed crankshaft and rigging. Two prototype crankshafts are cast from the sand molds, and analyzed for porosity. The porosity analysis results are compared directly to the simulated porosity, and found to be in good agreement. From the analysis of the prototype crankshaft, rigging s

The effect of panel zone (PZ) flexibility and yielding on the stiffness and strength of steel moment resisting frames (SMRF) has been the topic of numerous papers over the past thirty years. Due to these large inelastic deformations, the PZ region may also be a weak link in steel moment frame behavior. Because of the importance of PZ deformation in the behavior of steel frames, accurate modeling of this region is critical. Two of the most commonly used mathematical models f

The South African steel industry plays a vital role in the economy of the country. It is seen to be a major source of employment for the South African people, and key to sustainable economic development for the country. In recent years however, the South African steel industry has been faced with a number of challenges resulting in the closure of some steel companies and consequently the loss of many jobs. It is posited that small and medium enterprises (SMME’s) can minimise these negative effects, balance out the job losses and keep the industry sustainable. However, the barriers to entry in
