Abstract:
This work presents an experimental and numerical analysis of the mechanical behavior of a fixed-end SAE 1045 steel cylindrical specimen during the torsion test. To this end, an iterative numerical–experimental methodology is firstly proposed to assess the material response in the tensile test using a large strain elastoplasticity-based model solved in the context of the finite element method. Then, a 3D numerical simulation of the deformation process of the torsion test is tackled with this previously characterized model that proves to be able to predict the development of a high and localized triaxial stress and strain fields caused by the presence of high levels of angular deformation. Finally, the obtained numerical results are analytically studied with the cylindrical components of the Green–Lagrange strain tensor and experimentally validated with the measurements of shear strains via Digital Image Correlation (DIC) and the corresponding torque – twist angle curve.

Abstract:
The effect of electropulsing treatment (EPT) on the surface general corrosion behavior of an AISI/SAE 1045 steel under different machining regimes is studied. In the study, the following variables are alternated: high-speed steel (HSS) vs. hard metal (HM), and with and without the assistance of high-density electropulses. The corrosion rates are determined using comparative studies such as gravimetric analysis, salt spray chamber test, electrochemical polarization curve techniques (PC), and linear polarization resistance (LPR). Differences in surface microhardness were evaluated by applying optical microscopy and planimetric procedures. Specimens subjected to electropulses and turned with HM reported greater reductions of corrosion rates. Changes in corrosion behavior can be explained in terms of grain shape factor h variation. The present study demonstrates that electropulsing affects the corrosion behavior of AISI/SAE 1045 steel after the turning process.

Abstract:
Durability assessment of automotive lower suspension arm has been studied under service loadings. The fatigue tests were conducting for the SAE 1045 steel based strain-controlled. To specify the material mechanical properties of the used material, a fatigue test under constant amplitude loading has been carried out then the results were provided for the finite element code. The finite element fatigue life were evaluated and compared with the experimental results. The accuracy and efficiency of the numerical models are demonstrated. This tool cannot be considered as a powerful alternative prior to the further experimental process. Instead, suitable fatigue prediction models under service loadings need to be developed.

Abstract:
The competency of acoustic emission (AE) technique in order to predict the fatigue life of SAE 1045 carbon steel was discussed in this paper. The correlation of the AE parameter and the number of cycles to failure of the tested specimens were established via the statistical approach. In this paper, The AE hits were selected as the functional parameter. The fatigue life values were calculated using the strain-life approach of three models; Coffin-Manson, Smith-Watson Topper and Morrow. Both AE and strain signals used in the analysis were captured using the AE sensor and strain gauge that were attached to the specimen during the fatigue test. The results show that the AE technique has a good potential in assessing the fatigue life with the designed H-N curve (AE hits-number of cycles to failure curve).

Abstract: Studies of new materials, more resistance, cheaper costs and lower density, have high interest for structural use in engineering projects. Mechanical properties adquired in the past by alloyes adition, for example igher hardness, toughness and mechanical strenght, nowadays can be reached using controlled thermo mechanical process. These changes have provided the multiphase structures formation in steels, for example the dual phase steel, subject of the present study. In this work it was researched the effects of heat process in microestructure of medium carbon steels (SAE 1045) and the influence over mechanical properties, specially in toughers, realized by impact analysis. The heat treatment material has its structure transformed in dual-phase structure (ferrite and martensite) and compared with supplied material (ferrite and perlite). The microestructural characterization was done to determine the present phase, and the respective volumetric fraction of martensite. Tension and impact analysis were done to determine the steel mechanical properties. Results have shown that the interaction between ferrite and martensite generated in dual-phase condition, has higher influence, related the materials toughness, so the temperature that material was analysed comparing the three structures, verifies that the dual-phase struture has level of mechanical resistence and toughness, higher than quenched and tempered steels, and toughness near of medium carbon steel that has not received heat treatment in higher or lower temperatures.

Abstract:
Abstract: This paper aims to present a new proposal for production of steel for valve springs for internal combustion engines SAE 9258. Currently this steel is produced by ingot casting route, and intended to adopt the continuous casting process, maintaining all the mechanical and metallurgical characteristics of the steel produced conventionally. Special attention during the process of refinement (liquid phase) were taken into account are obtained for silicate inclusions deformable essential to achieving a safe fatigue life for the springs during the life of the engine. To evaluate these features were made of steel metallographic analysis of microstructure in specimens during processing of steel (wire rod) and the final stage (wires) performed tensile tests, axial fatigue tests on specimens standard (ASTM E 466), fatigue tests in rotating bending on the wire (Nakamura test), the fatigue test the springs and examination of the areas of fatigue fracture with the aid of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) for the two production routes (ingot and continuous casting). The results show no differences with respect to microstructure, mechanical properties and fatigue behavior of steel in the final stages of production (wire) and the product form (spring). Moreover, the results obtained for steel in the intermediate stage of processing (wire rod) show differences from the microstructure (the larger amount of carbides in the samples of the continuous casting), lower area reduction with the consequent reduction resistance to fatigue.

Abstract:
The steel market is experiencing a period of great competition and manufacturing companies need, increasingly, to act internally on their costs to ensure lucrativeness and profitability. The motivation of this work was to reduce the cost of production of steel wires for the agriculture sector, by studying the technical feasibility use of a carbon steel produced by electric arc furnace, replacing the oxygen furnace steel – currently used in some mills. The studied steels are manufactured in an electric arc furnace, giving rise to the billets that are hot rolled to obtain the wire rod to follow the subsequent process of drawing and galvanizing, where the wires of steel are made. The chemical compositions proposed in this paper must guarantee that the mechanical properties described in the technical standards continue be met. Data, chemical composition, microstructure, tensile strength and winding properties were surveyed and analyzed. Based upon the results achieved, it is shown that the proposed method for assessment of the mechanical properties is valid. This study also indicates that it is technically feasible the use of carbon steel similar to SAE1045, obtained by electric arc furnace, to manufacturing galvanized steel wires for the agriculture sector maintaining compliance to all technical standards and with the possibility of reducing costs.

Abstract: The purpose of this work was to investigate and to model mathematically the influence of the quench hardening and draw tempering process variables on the tensile strength of SAE 9254 drawn steel wires with 2,00 mm and 6,50mm diameter. To this end, the statistical tools of design of experiments and multiple regression with application of principal components analysis were employed. The results revealed the process variables that significantly affect the response variable. The mathematical models obtained by multiple regression were able to predict, with a reasonable accuracy, the mechanical property of the tensile strength.
