The forms of the superharmonic instabilities of irrotational surface waves on deep water are calculated for wave steepnesses up to 99.9% of the limiting value. It is found that as the limiting wave steepness is approached the rates of growth of the lowest two unstable modes (n=1 and 2) increase according to the asymptotic law suggested by the theory of the almost-highest wave (Longuet-Higgins & Cleaver 1994; Longuet-Higgins, Cleaver & Fox 1994; Longuet-Higgins & Dommermuth 1997). Theoretical arguments suggest that progressive gravity waves incident on a vertical wall can produce periodic standing waves only if the incident wave steepness ak is quite small, certainly less than 0.284. Laboratory experiments are carried out in which an incident wave train of almost uniform amplitude meets a vertical barrier. At wave steepnesses greater than 0.236 the resulting motion near the barrier is non-periodic. A growing instability is observed in which every third wave crest is steeper than its neighbours. The steep waves develop sharp crests, or vertical jets. The two neighbouring

We use both production and age-structured models to explore these patterns. For the production model, we derive explicit relationships for steepness and life history parameters and then for steepness and major reference points. For the age-structured model, we are req

AbstractIn order to understand the mechanism of the surf-riding/broaching profoundly, the four- degree- of-freedom(4DOF) maneuvering equation (surge, sway, yaw and roll) is simplified to a one- degree-of-freedom (1DOF) equation, and the fourth-order Runge-Kutta method is used to integrate a 1DOF surge equation in the time domain to analyze the two motion states of the ship during the surging and surf-riding. The critical Froude number is calculated using the Melnikov method. Taking a fishing boat as an example, the ship’s surf-riding/broaching phenomenon is simulated under the condition of wavelength-to-ship-length ratio and wave steepness, 1 and 1/10 respectively, providing technical support for the formulation of the second generation intact stability criteria.

Abstract:
AbstractOriginating from distant storms, swell systems radiate across all ocean basins. Far from their sources, emerging surface waves have low steepness characteristics, with very slow amplitude variations. Swell propagation then closely follows principles of geometrical optics, i.e. the eikonal approximation to the wave equation, with a constant wave period along geodesics, when following a wave packet at its group velocity. The phase averaged evolution of quasi-linear wave fields is then dominated by interactions with underlying current and/or topography changes. Comparable to the propagation of light in a slowly varying medium, over many wavelengths, cumulative effects can lead to refraction, i.e. change of the direction of propagation of a given wave packet, so that it departs from its initial ray-propagation direction. This opens the possibility of using surface swell systems as probes to estimate turbulence along their propagating path.
