Abstract:
The morphology of the preimaginal stages of Enochrus Thomson (Coleoptera: Hydrophilidae) is investigated. Descriptions and detailed illustrations of the egg cases, all three larval instars, and pupae of the Neotropical species E. (Hugoscottia) variegatus (Steinheil, 1869) and E. (Methydrus) vulgaris (Steinheil, 1869) are presented. The larval morphology of these species is studied on the basis of chaetotaxic and morphometric analyses of selected structures (head capsule, head appendages and legs). A key to larval instars of Enochrus is also presented. The larval instars can be separated by mea

Abstract:
The genus Eremobothynus Ohaus, 1910 includes two species from Argentina. A synopsis of the genus was provided by Endrödi (1969, 1985) and since his last contribution no new species have been described. In this paper we describe a new third species from Entre Ríos, Argentina. At present, all Eremobothynus species are endemic to Argentina and known from only few localities. Taxonomic notes are given for E. cornutus (Steinheil), leading to the discussion and correction of some diagnostic characters of the genus. Additionally, a key for the identification of the species is provided.

The larval stages of Andogyrus seriatopunctatus Régimbart are described and illustrated, including morphometric and chaetotaxic characters. A larval ground pattern for the chaetotaxic characters is presented; it is based on first instar larvae of A. seriatopunctatus. Unidentified larvae of Dineutus MacLeay and a third instar larva of Gyrinus argentinus Steinheil were also inspected. For chaetotaxic homologization comparisons with other adephagan families were performed, mainly with Carabidae and Dytiscidae. The ground pattern is considered provisional due to the lack of previous studies in thi

Abstract:
Among the recently described genera in Hyacinthaceae subfamily Urgineoideae (= Asparagaceae subfam. Scilloideae tribe Urgineeae), Austronea Mart.-Azorín, M.B.Crespo, M.Pinter & Wetschnig in Martínez-Azorín et al. (2018: 105) includes 20 species restricted to southern Africa (Martínez-Azorín et al. 2018, 2019a, 2019b). Some such species were traditionally included in Urginea Steinheil (1834: 321) or Drimia Jacq. ex Willdenow (1799: 165) sensu lato and resemble those of Fusifilum Rafinesque (1837: 27), a phylogenetic relationship supported by molecular data (Martínez-Azorín et al. in prep.).

Abstract:
This chapter focuses upon the 1830s, when intellectuals, scientists, state officials, and entrepreneurs throughout Germany placed their hopes on the possibility of instantaneous, long-distance communication and increasingly became aware of the practicalities of bringing this vision to life. The correspondence of the scientists Carl Friedrich Gauß and Carl Steinheil illuminates their research into telegraphy and the networks connecting academics across Germany, through which it was discussed. Railway companies took an interest in this research, as they began to see in the technology a potential means of improving the efficiency and profitability of their services. The writings of the political theorists Friedrich List and Robert von Mohl, meanwhile, demonstrate the growing recognition that telegraphic communication could unleash the economic energies inherent in society, while also presenting new challenges for the administration of the state. Bremen is introduced as a counterexample to developments taking place across Germany. By the late 1830s these ideas were brought together as scientists and entrepreneurs turned to one another and to the state as a means of gathering the financial, logistical, and technical resources which they required to develop the technology.

Abstract:
Are reason and revelation different sources of truth? Do they contradict or complement each other? The present article tries to give an answer to these ancient questions from a Jewish pluralistic point of view. I describe the essential views of the most important representatives of the two main schools of Jewish thought: the rationalists Maimonides, Moses Mendelssohn, and Hermann Cohen, and the antirationalists Judah Halevi and Solomon Levi Steinheim. I show that even the antirationalists use the tools of rationalism, by which Talmudic-rabbinic thought is characterized, in an attempt to show that they are not irrationalists. The comparison of this attitude with the general philosophic tradition shows that Aristotle’s notion of potential knowledge is closer to Jewish thought than Plato’s view of recollection.
