This process greatly influences analytical outcomes. To address this linguistic complexity, several stemming algorithms were developed. The Mediterranean monk seal Monachus monachus was once a common inhabitant of the Mediterranean Sea. Over time, its distribution has experienced a sharp reduction, primarily attributed to various factors stemming from human activities. Known reproductive sub-populations of the species are nowadays concentrated along the coasts of Greece and Turkey. However, occasional but recurrent sightings or movements of individuals are being recorded along most of the coasts in the species ́ former distribution range within the Mediterranean Sea. The Marine Strategy Framework Directive require the establishment of monitoring programmes to obtain indicators for the Good Environmental Status of European waters. Here we present the monitoring programmes we carried out on the Endangered Mediterranean monk seal in the central Mediterranean Sea. The output of the work carried out in the central Mediterranean Sea for such a long period of time indicates the relevance of continuous monitoring systems for the monk seal as a top predator in the area. a. Full text
Abstract:
AbstractThe solution to a stochastic optimal control problem can be determined by computing the value function from a discretization of the associated Hamilton–Jacobi–Bellman equation. Alternatively, the problem can be reformulated in terms of a pair of forward-backward SDEs, which makes Monte–Carlo techniques applicable. More recently, the problem has also been viewed from the perspective of forward and reverse time SDEs and their associated Fokker–Planck equations. This approach is closely related to techniques used in diffusion-based generative models. Forward and reverse time formulations express the value function as the ratio of two probability density functions; one stemming from a forward McKean–Vlasov SDE and another one from a reverse McKean–Vlasov SDE. In this chapter, we extend this approach to a more general class of stochastic optimal control problems and combine it with ensemble Kalman filter type and diffusion map approximation techniques in order to obtain efficient and robust particle-based algorithms.

Abstract:
Lung cancer stands as a prominent malignancy globally, ranking high in both incidence and mortality rates. It ranks as the second most frequent cancer diagnosis, regardless of gender. Although smoking is the main culprit behind lung cancer, radon and asbestos exposure can also play a role in its pathogenesis. Common symptoms include coughing, shortness of breath, and notably, hemoptysis, with manifestations stemming from local tumors, intrathoracic spread, distant metastases, or paraneoplastic syndromes. The majority of lung cancer diagnoses occur symptomatically, typically at advanced stages, indicative of poor prognosis. Imaging modalities, such as, Computed Tomography (CT), Ultrasonography (US), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), chest Radiographs, Positron Emission Tomography combined with CT (PET-CT), and bone scintigraphy, play crucial roles in diagnosis and disease staging. Despite the prevalence of advanced-stage presentations, early detection of lung cancer remains paramount, as it offers patients the potential for curative treatment through the implementation of appropriate radiological techniques. Radiologists act as crucial members of the multidisciplinary team dedicated to lung cancer, contributing expertise throughout the patient journey - from initial screening and definitive diagnosis to treatment planning and evaluation of treatment response.

Abstract:
AbstractThe paper proposes considerations stemming from the analysis of twenty-two buildings that show different approaches to ‘vegetarian architecture’—a theoretical stance based on principles learnt from agriculture and nutrition. The first phase consisted in a systematic investigation of the constructional characteristics of each building, and the cataloguing of their components. The ‘cradle to gate’ embodied energy (EE) and ‘embodied carbon’ (EC) were then calculated, based on two open access databases: ICE and Ökobaudat. The applicability of these databases was considered, as they do not cover low industrialised bio-based construction materials. For some materials, data are missing; while in others, EE values are overestimated since high energy-intensive manufacturing processes seem to be assumed. In a second phase, the uses and production process of some non-conventional materials was investigated, evidencing their variability. Building technologies that are not just aimed at low operational energy but at a more holistic understanding of low environmental impact represent a paradigm shift in ‘sustainable’ construction practices. Despite ongoing actions and policies, as long as these materials and techniques are not suitably represented in reliable and accessible databases, it will be difficult to make such a shift happen. Manufacturers and contractors who produce and use such materials would benefit from the availability of easily applicable, scientific data demonstrating environmental advantages offered by non-conventional materials.

Abstract:
AbstractBusiness process simulation is a versatile technique to predict the impact of one or more changes on the performance of a process. Mainstream approaches in this space suffer from various limitations, some stemming from the fact that they treat resources as undifferentiated entities grouped into resource pools. These approaches assume that all resources in a pool have the same performance and share the same availability calendars. Previous studies have acknowledged these assumptions, without quantifying their impact on simulation model accuracy. This paper addresses this gap in the context of simulation models automatically discovered from event logs. The paper proposes a simulation approach and a method for discovering simulation models, wherein each resource is treated as an individual entity, with its own performance and availability calendar. An evaluation shows that simulation models with differentiated resources more closely replicate the distributions of cycle times and the work rhythm in a process than models with undifferentiated resources.
