Abstract:
In this study we investigated the stemming mechanisms of Google. We used its web interface and submitted many queries via a program. Stemming is the process of correlating morphologically similar words with one another. Search engines use stemming to match documents having one form of a word with queries having another form of the same word. We investigated the stemming mechanism of Google for three classes of words: singulars/plurals, combined words, and verbs with many postfixes. Our results indicate that Google uses a document-based algorithm for stemming. It evaluates each document separat

This article discusses measures being taken by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to protect New Orleans from future flood events. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is redesigning and upgrading the 350-mile network of linked levees, floodwalls, gates, and pumps in the New Orleans area. The Corps of Engineers’ plan for New Orleans flood control involves upgrading some existing structures such as levees and floodwalls and adding some new risk-reduction features, two of which are movable gates. Stemming length and stemming materials are crucial factors in blasting design, which affect the sustainability of mining. This study investigates the influence of stemming length and stemming material on rock fragmentation, stemming recoil, and surface strain response through 15 small-scale model blasting tests. The results indicate that when using clay as a stemming material, increasing the stemming length facilitates rock fragmentation and reduces the stemming recoil area. The strain measurements show that both tensile and compressive strain peaks on the blasting crater surface increase with

Stemming is a technique to return the word derivation to the root or base word. Stemming is widely used for data processing such as searching word indexes, translating, and information retrieval from a document in the database. In general, stemming uses a morphological pattern from a derived word to produce the original word or root word. In the previous research, this technique faced over-stemming and under-stemming problems. In this study, the stemming process will be improved by the syllable pattern (canonical) based on the phonological rule in Sundanese. The stemming result for syllable pa
