Among the books, manuscripts, and printed music donated to Boston University by the renowned Haydn scholar H. C. Robbins Landon is a manuscript collection of music for the Ordinary of the Mass. The volume is a compendium, most likely from the Veneto, created in the mid-eighteenth century by extracting pages from three manuscripts copied earlier in the century or late in the previous century. The four cantus-fractus Ordinary cycles that introduce the volume (presumably contemporaneous with its creation) and most of the sixteen cantus-fractus Credos seem to be unica. In his recent re-evaluation of McLuhanite theories for the information age, Digital McLuhan, Paul Levinson makes what at first glance appears to be a curious statement: he says that on the Web "the common denominator ... is the written word, as it is and has been with all things having to do with computers -- and will likely continue to be until such time, if ever, that the spoken word replaces the written as the vehicle of computer commands" (38). This, however, seems to directly contradict what any Web user has been able to experience for several years now: Web content has increasingly come

In January 2002, the Boston Globe’s ‘Spotlight’ team began what would become a series of over 600 reports into sexual abuse and cover-up within the Catholic Church. The cumulative effect of ongoing revelations—reignited in 2018—on Catholic practice and retention is discussed here in light of empirical data and the theoretical idea of Credibility Undermining Displays (or CRUDs). Also covered in this chapter are issues relating to intergenerational transmission, the rise of the internet and social media, the rise of the ‘nones’, the phenomenon of ‘liminal nones’, and the chasm between traditiona

When, at his prompting, the last synod in Puritan Massachusetts’s history was convened, he gave the opening address to the assembly, served as its moderator, and wrote its unanimous conclusion. In Rome, Barber attended a Gregorian Mass sung by Benedictine monks at St. Anselmo church and was inspired to write a grand-scaled religious work, Prayers of Kierkegaard, for orchestra, mixed chorus, a soprano solo written with Leontyne Price’s voice in mind, and incidental contralto and tenor solos. It was premiered by the Boston Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Charles Munch, with Price as soloist. Barber wrote about the music to his beloved mentor and uncle, Sidney Homer, who at the time was coming toward the end of his life. Homer’s guidance was unwavering, and he encouraged Barber to
