This thesis explores how onboard instrumentation can be used to study how birds interact with the atmosphere, in particular to understand their soaring strategies and gust response mechanisms. We describe a case study evaluating the ecological impact of Bromus tectorum L. (cheatgrass) invasion following fire disturbance and the effectiveness of revegetation in improving ecological integrity in a degraded semi-arid shrub steppe system. The fortified enclosures of Late Iron Age/Antique Khorezm (Chorasmia) (7th/6th century BCE–4th century CE) have been characterised by previous scholars as the urban centres of a centralised, agricultural state, yet there is little evidence that they were permanent, nucleated settlements.
