Abstract:
For positioning of linear stages in absolute coordinates, there is a general need to find a reference position since the initial one is unknown. This is commonly called homing. To reduce costs and facilitate assembly, homing can be performed without additional sensors, known as sensorless homing. This thesis delves into sensorless homing, specifically with respect to stepper motors, and develops a graphical application for control of them. The commercial technology StallGuard is applied inconjunction with exploration into how it – and sensorless load detectionin general – functions. The resulting graphical application can be used to configure the stepper motors, perform homing using StallGuard, and automatically tune StallGuard to work despite varying conditions. In addition, rudimentary sensorless load detection independent from StallGuard is developed, demonstrating how it could work in practice. Testing shows homing with StallGuard resulting in a position within a ±5μm window in 94% of cases, less than 1/7 the width of an average strand of human hair. Additionally, homing is easily performed with a single button press from the graphical interface, with optional additional configuration available.

Abstract:
Although a robot vacuum cleaner is a well-known product, development is still interesting. Better working sensors and more sophisticated algorithms and sensors are used in new cleaners. The purpose with this thesis was to learn more about different sensors, algorithms, and designs of robot vacuum cleaners, to try ideas and to find improvements to implement on the demonstrator. The initial work was to make a market investigation to find customer needs and expectations. Also making a rough design and layout for the mechanical and electrical system. The budget for the demonstrator was 1000 SEK. Using laser cut plastic sheets, 3D printed parts, and receiving motors for free, costs did not exceed budget. Literature and theses in the area of interest were studied to find answers to some of the research questions. The theses studied subjects such as driving pattern and designs to find back to charge station. Some ideas for driving patterns were implemented on a demonstrator. The development method used was iteration of finding useful information, testing components, codes and also the complete demonstrator. The components used were DC motor, stepper motors, ultrasonic sensors, Arduino mega micro controller, switches and AA batteries. The different components required different voltage and the stepper motors used driver cards.

Abstract:
O modelo matemático apresenta as características elétricas e mecânicas do atuador e as características mecânicas do robô.
This work contemplates the design of a robotic manipulator, which is operated by a stepper motor with five actuation joints. The robot design steps were divided into: mechanical design; mathematical modeling; controller design; and simulations. The mechanical design presents a proposal of mechanical configuration and sizing that supplies the required demand for the analyzed operation. The mathematical model presents the electrical and mechanical characteristics of the actuator and the mechanical characteristics of the robot. The design of a linear controller is accomplished by allocating the poles of the closed loop system by states feedback of the position and angular speed of the rotor attached to an angular position error integrator. For the first degree of freedom, due to the variation of mass moment of inertia associated with this joint, a controller with parameterized gains was projected, in which the gains are calculated based on the mathematical model related to the mass moment of inertia associated to this joint. By means of computational simulations, we evaluated the design of the controllers in the point-to-point movement of the five actuation joints and the variation of the mass moment of inertia on the first joint. The results of these simulations showed that the proposed controllers comply with the desired dynamics in the robot’s five degrees of freedom.

Abstract:
The purpose of this report was to research through the construction of a prototype the technical challenges associated with creating a robot that distributes sand on patios after snowfall. A robot that could complete this task should be able to know its position in an unknown terrain and traverse it in a predictable manner that allows for the even spread of the sand. In order to achieve stability and predictability of movement, stepper motor driven wheels were chosen as the steering method. The sand-spreading mechanism consists of a DC Motor connected to a 3D-printed disc with rectangular extrusions at its base. The wheels and chassis of the robot were likewise 3D-printed. Lastly, an Arduino MEGA board was the controller of choice.

Abstract:
The art of tattooing has been around for centuries in human history and tattoos are still very popular in today’s society. Tattoos serve as a way to, for example, express people’s personalities, religious beliefs, or culture, and its growing popularity may lead to the need for more technological and automated alternatives. In this project, a computer numerical control plotter was built to investigate the possibilities of automation of tattooing, and the project focused on the possible limitations of performance and safety in an automated tattooing machine. The machine was built using two stepper motors connected with an H-Bot configuration that moved a gantry in the X and Y directions. A third stepper motor connected to a lead-screw was mounted on the gantry enabling movement in Z direction. Several tests were conducted in order to examine the performance of the machine. These tests were done using ink and whiteboard markers to draw different geometries on paper and the subject’s arm. The results showed limitations in the size of the tattoo as the machine could only draw on a flat surface and therefore had trouble adjusting to the uneven surface of an arm. The results also showed that the machine had some trouble drawing rounded geometries, such as circles, which meant that the circles, to a certain extent, got an elliptical appearance. It did however draw straight lines accurately. The main factors of this were believed to be a combination of sub-optimal assembly and the stepper motors being too weak to optimally operate with the H-Bot configuration. The safety risks were considered restricted when using a limit switch sensor and carefully calibrating the speed and movement in the Z-axis.

Abstract:
A simple idea can have many different construction solutions and a claw machine is a good machine to try different solutions on. The goal of this thesis was to find out how a claw machine could be created as simple as possible and finding out which parts that were essential in constructing the machine. The claw machine’s shell was built using a laser cutter and details were 3D-printed. With 4 metal rods and two stepper motors the claw machine gantry worked properly. Finally a 3D-printed claw was made and attached to a servo motor and a stepper motor, a functional claw machine had been constructed. The conclusions of this thesis was that stop-sensors were not necessary in the making of the machine as the motors can’t move the claw further than to the edges and risk damaging the machine, step counting with proper belts is an alternative. Further conclusions was that 3D-printed bearings creates too much friction and therefore the gantry can’t operate, and using a fixed timing belt instead of a movable one is to prefer.

Abstract:
To use the image of the retina for biometric or medical purposes, it is necessary that the image is of the highest quality and ideally covers the largest possible area. It is therefore necessary to move the sensing device to the most suitable position while ensuring its stability. A laboratory handling platform is used for this purpose. The platform is moved by stepper motors. A control board equipped with a microcontroller has been developed for their control, which allows very fine movements. The theoretical accuracy of the manipulator is up to 20 nm. Since it is necessary for sensing, to have proper retina illumination, the control system also includes adjustable illumination elements in the infrared and visible spectrum. The resulting system allows scanning of the retina of the eye from multiple angles and thereby effectively increase the area on which it is possible to further look for diseases or biometric features.

This project is about making an embedded system in order to control different functionalities of a stepper motor. The main functions of this stepper motor are to control the speed and direction. The whole hardware consists of two parts. One is the transmitter side and the other side is the receiver side. The transmitter side consists of PC, Encoder, a microcontroller and RF (Radio Frequency) transmitter. On the receiver side there is an RF receiver, a decoder, a microcontroller, a motor driver and a stepper motor. During this project a wireless system is going to be used to enhance the stepper motor operated manually. This system will actually adapt the requirements of the modern technology. With the help of this system one can control the speed of the stepper motor controller from remote sites. It can also control the direction of the stepper motor. In order to make it user friendly we make a GUI for controlling it from the PC. The data is sent and received via transmitter and receiver respectively. This data will be encoded and decoded and sent to the motor driver from where it is sent to the stepper motor in order to perform the operations.

Abstract:
Electrical drives are widely used in today’s society. They can be found in bothhousehold products and in the industry. One application where electrical drivesare used is in robots for mowing lawns. In the studied robots the motors in theelectrical drives used for propulsion are Brush Less Direct Current motors, BLDCmotors. The BLDC-motor has its maximum torque at high speeds and thereforea gearbox is needed. The gearbox is space consuming, add costs and consists ofmechanical parts that wear during use. Of interest is therefore to investigate ifthere are other electrical drives which can be used for propulsion.A motor who has its maximum torque at low speeds is the Stepper motor, andtherefore it is of interest to investigate if a stepper motor could replace the BLDCmotor.A drawback with the stepper motor is that it always consumes maximumcurrent and therefore a current controller is beneficial. Together with currentcontrol, speed control is needed to make the robot run at desired speed. To beable to perform an accurate current and speed control feedback from the motor isneeded. Information about the rotor angle and velocity can be used for the speedcontrol and the load angle can be used for the current control since the current isproportional to the load torque. To estimate the rotor angle and velocity a model has been developed. Themodel is based on fundamental electrical and mechanical equations and neglectsthe current and position dependence of the inductance and flux linkage. To completethe model three motor parameters, the maximum detent torque Tdm, themaximum flux linkage  m and the friction constant B was determined. Parameterdetermination was done by linear regression and by using an Extended KalmanFilter, EKF. The result of the parameter determination were Tdm = 0.2152 Nm, m = -0.002854 Vs/rad and B = 0.01186 Nms/rad.The model is used in an EKF to estimate the rotor angle and angular velocity. The result of the implemented EKF seems promising. When making the rotortake a step in velocity from 3.927 rad/s to 7.85 rad/s the EKF estimates the stateswith only a small bias: 0.02 rad for the angle, 0.3 rad/s for the velocity, 0.005 Afor phase a current and 0.0004 A for phase b current. To estimate the load angle the Sliding Discrete Fourier Transform is used. Theexpected relation between the load torque and load angle is sinusoidal. The loadangle is calculated from data where the external load is between 0-2.5 Nm. Inthat area the load angle shows the expected sinusoidal appearance and the loadangle is in the area between 0.1 and 0.45 rad. At 3 Nm the rotor stalls and it isshown that the load angle varies between 0 and 2 rad when the rotor is stalled.

Stepper motors are used in most applications in open loop. However, the limitations of this type of control have encouraged the development of new techniques for closed loop control. Stepper motors have a good relationship between torque and cost, making it attractive for applications in robotic manipulators. But the limitation of traditional control deteriorates the performance of the manipulator. The most common form of closed loop control of stepper motors require an encoder directly coupled to the motor shaft. However, this is not always practical. In some cases, it is necessary to control the position of some system component that can’t be precisely known from the position of the motor. This work proposes a control technique that receives feedback from an encoder, not directly coupled to the motor shaft, and generates a sequence of pulses to the stepper motor driver. This pulse train is done so as not to require excessive accelerations, and thus prevent the loss of step. The model of a system using this controller is built using Simulink/MATLAB. A robotic manipulator of six degrees of freedom, using stepper motors, is designed and built to validate the presented control techniques, implemented on a PIC18F2431 microcontroller. The obtained absolute accuracy is 1,3mm and repeatability 0,5mm , proving the efficiency of the proposed control technique.

Abstract:
Hybrid stepper motors are being applied to more and more industrial regionsdue to their low cost compared with servo motors and prominent performance. Many industrial applications require accurate and eective methods for predictinga motor’s performance at the design stage. The geometry of the motorsis complicated and the magnetic saturation eect is also serious, giving riseto the diculty of understanding the transient behavior of the motors. Furthermore, the drive circuit and control algorithm are more sophisticated thanthose of traditional AC or DC motors. Lastly, the losses of the motors createthe rising of temperature, while the thermal eect and dynamic performanceaect each other. All these factors can be solved by simulating a hybrid stepper motor witha model combining the eect of electromagnetic field, control algorithm, andmotor loss together. In this thesis, a three-dimension (3D) finite elementmodel is developed in the software Maxwell for studying motor characteristics. The electromagnetic field is analyzed in a static state. The simulatedback electromagnetic force is verified by experiments. The feasibility of fullstepcontrol algorithm is analyzed. The vector control algorithm is applied tothe model through co-simulation of Simulink and Maxwell in Simplorer. The3D model is proved to be unrealistic for co-simulation. In the end, this thesissummarizes the modeling experience and gives recommendations on thetransient simulation of the motor.

The industry is calling for a low-cost drive solution. The hybrid stepper motor isconsidered as a good candidate since it has much larger production than traditionalservo motor. In this thesis, the author comes up with a control solution of a hybridstepper motor based on a low-cost sensor, which reaches a high control resolutionwith a low cost. In the design, vector control is chosen and modified to be the controlstrategy of the motor. An extended kalman filter (EKF), neural network (NN)and linear regression harmonic compensation (LRHC) are evaluated to improve theperformance of the low-cost sensor. In the experiments, the solution is tested byrunning the motor to simulate an industrial implementation. The experiments givea positive outcome so that the feasibility of the low-cost solution for the industrialdrive has been proved.

Abstract:
This thesis has explored if it is feasible to produce a good estimation of the rotational position of a stepper motor by using sensor fusion schemes to merge a sensorless position estimation (based on the back electromotive force) with the measurement from a magnetic rotational position sensor. The purpose was to find a cheaper alternative for position feedback in closed loop control from conventionally used rotational encoders and resolvers. Beyond the sensor fusion a suitable position control logic was also developed to verify the concept of a low cost closed loop hybrid stepper motor solution for high precision position applications. The sensor fusion and position control were simulated offline to first test the feasibility of the implementation, after which laboratory tests were performed to assess online performance. The extended Kalman filter implemented improved the performance of the magnetic rotational position sensor which was used exclusively at lower speeds (between 0-75 rpm) by decreasing its root-mean-square error by almost half from 0.0733 unfiltered to 0.0370 filtered (in mechanical degrees). When fusing both position signals at higher rotational speeds (75-400rpm) did the extended Kalman filter clearly improve position estimation accuracy compared to the single sources. It is not meaningful however to discuss the numeric improvement of the filter at these working points as this result is not conclusive but based on some fortunate conditions. This is because the two signals used for the fusion is diverging towards positive and negative error respectively for increasing rotational speeds making the fused estimate result in between. This basically means that the result from the fusion is outperforming two very bad signals, and is then not meaningful to use as a measure of how well the fusion is actually performing. Further work on the raw signals used for fusion need to be performed before a proper assessment on the fusion performance could be made.

Abstract:
Hybrid stepper motors are a common type of electric motor used throughout industry thanks to its low-cost, high torque at low speed and open loop positioning capabilities. However, a closed loop control is often required for industrial applications with high precision requirements. The closed loop control can also be used to lower the power consumption of the motor and ensure that stalls are avoided. It is quite common to utilise a large and costly position encoder or resolver to feedback the position signal to the control logic. This thesis has explored the possibility of using a low-cost position sensor based on Hall elements. Additionally, a sensorless estimation algorithm, using only stator winding measurements, has been investigated both as a competitive alternative and as a possible complement to the position sensor. The thesis work summarises and discusses previous research attempts to adequately measure or estimate and control the hybrid stepper motors position and load angle without using a typical encoder or resolver. Qualitative results have been produced through simulations prior to implementation and experimental testing. The readings from the position sensor is subject to noise, owing to its resolution and construction. The position signal has been successfully filtered, improving its accuracy from 0.56° to 0.25°. The output from the sensorless estimation algorithm is subject to non-linear errors caused by errors in phase voltage measurements and processing of velocity changes. However, the dynamics are reliable at constant speeds and could be used for position control.

Abstract:
This diploma thesis deals with the structural and optomechanical design of automatization of focusing laser beam for a remote laser spectroscopy device. The chosen solution uses an active rangefinder and a rotary unit to control the change of the focus plane of the device's optic system. The dependence of the focus plane’s change on the shift of lens in the focus plane was practically measured. For proper control of the rotary unit, this dependency is needed. Structural parts were made based on the created drawing documentation. The structural parts were mounted in the existing assembly of the device together with the purchased components. The proposed solution enables a change of the optical system, for example, in order to obtain a more appropriate range of focal planes.
