Abstract Twenty-seven phosphine and six bipyridine ligands were synthesised and characterized. Additionally, a new route to the family of phosphine ligands via o-thioanisyldichlorophosphine was found. The phosphine ligands contain thiomethylphenyl, methoxyphenyl, dimethylaminophenyl, pyridyl, naphthyl and anthracenyl groups, and the bipyridine ligands thiomorpholine and piperidine groups. Metal complexes of 3-pyridyldiphenylphosphine, 6,6'-bis(methylthiomorpholine)-2,2'-bipyridine and 4,4'-dimethyl-6,6'-bis(methylthiomorpholine)-2,2'-bipyridine were prepared. We have reacted several derivatives of the anticancer drug cisplatin with N-acetyl-Lcysteine (N-AcCys) and N-acetyl-L-methionine (N-AcMet), which are two of the primary amino acid targets of platinum. NMR spectroscopy was used to monitor the reactions and determine the effect the different ligands would have on the platinum reactivity. Several of the platinum compounds were tested at pH of 4 and 7, and with platinum:amino acid ratios of 1:1, 2:1 and 1:2. Competition reactions between cysteine and methionine were done to confirm which would react with the platinum compound first. [Pt(dien)(NO3)

Abstract:
Sepsis and septic shock are conditions, with severe outcome or in many cases death. Sepsis is a systemic inflammatory response trigger by bacteraemia but systemic inflammatory response can also be triggered by major trauma, major surgery, pancreatitis, severe burns etc. The systemic inflammatory reaction initiating the evolvement of septic organ dysfunction can be modelled using endotoxin, a Gram-negative bacterial lipopolysaccharide. This thesis used a porcine experimental sepsis model to examine timing of the inflammatory response due to endotoxin infusion (Paper I) and the influence of ster

Nonmammalian vertebrates possess some unusual features in their hormonal systems/ when compared to mammals. As a consequence, they can make an important contribution in investigations concerning the fundamental mechanisms operating in endocrinology. Such studies concerning androgens include inter alia their effects on developmental aspects in the brain of birds and related singing behaviour; the role of neural enzymes in reproductive processes in fish; and the relation between androgens and the stages of spermatogenesis in amphibia, The present thesis examines the biochemistry of androgens in

Orientador: Otto Bismarck Fazzano Gadig<br>Abstract: The establishment of no-take marine reserves (NTRs), i.e. areas with total fishing restrictions, has been an alternative worldwide aiming to preserve both biodiversity and ecosystem functions. Brazil has important NTRs with few studies describing their relevance and efficiency for marine life. With this, the central objective of this thesis was to evaluate the effects of NTRs on fish assemblage, testing the hypothesis that the differences in richness, abundance, biomass and fish body size is more explained by protection status than environme

Corticosteroid ligands activate the glucocorticoid receptor (GR). GR plays a role in glucose homeostasis, adipogenesis, inflammation, and mood and cognitive functions. Understanding the interplay of diverse forms of receptor regulation (including post-translational modification, cofactor interactions, ligand binding, and receptor localization) and their effects is important for understanding and developing more effective treatment for a variety of conditions. Prior to ligand binding, the naïve GR is primarily cytoplasmic, residing in a chaperone complex containing heat-shock proteins and immun

Substance abuse and mental health disorders are a leading source of years lost to disability from medical causes worldwide. Unfortunately, for most neurological disorders it is unclear how underlying genetic predispositions govern behavioral response to environmental stressors. Owing to their convenience, genetic tractability, and small brains, the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, has become an invaluable model in which to dissect the neurological basis of conserved complex behaviors. Here, I characterized the respective roles of two genes in alcohol response and sleep behavior. Steroid hor
