Abstract The AOAC sporicidal method (966.04) recommends the use of porcelain penicylinders and black waxed silk sutures as carriers for demonstrating the sporicidal activity of sterilants. However, the silk carriers are not suitable for evaluating the sporicidal efficacy of oxidizing agents, and an inert polyester material (Dacron) is recommended as an alternative. Dacron provides an equivalent microbial and physical challenge to silk. Microbiologically, both materials demonstrated similar HCl resistance, which is required by the AOAC test, as well as equivalent spore loading and spore wash-of

For 3 years starting in April 1989, in a 17-station, in-centre haemodialysis unit at the Toronto Western Hospital, re-use of dialysers was performed using the Renatron-2 Dialyser Reprocessing System with peracetic acid as a sterilant. During this period 40,234 treatments were carried out and dialysers were used an average of 4.2 times. Net savings, after taking into account the total costs of re-use, averaged Can $309,000,000 per year. There were no deaths and no discernible morbidity attributable to the practice of re-use. We conclude that dialyzer re-use is an effective way to reduce the cos

The purposes of this research were to study the effect of amino acid DL-tryptophan at various concentrations on culture callus growth and production of alkaloid-reserpine of Rauvolfia serpentina and to determine optimum concentration of DL-tryptophan to yield maximum alkaloid reserpine of the callus. This research was consisted of three phases. First phase was to determine compatible sterilan for R. serpentina leaf explants. Second phase was to initiate/ to induce callus formation from the explants. Third phase was treatment phase to know the influence of DL-tryptophan addition on growth and a

One-d-old CM eggs (n = 1,440) on nectarines were immersed in a 10 ppm aqueous solution of pyriproxyfen for 5 s. Eggs were incubated for 7-11 d to determine hatch. Two-d-old unsexed CM adults were topically exposed to pyriproxyfen in methanol solutions (3 replicates of 30 adults/dose). AbstractFour models are presented which represent the four combinations of two trap types (food-baited or pheromone-baited), each containing either insecticide or chemosterilant. These were then modelled in combination to determine which combinations might be useful for controlling arthropod pest species in which the virgin females produce sex pheromone which attracts males. The most promising results occurred in combinations involving different trap baits but the same pesticide type, i.e. where one trap contains food bait while the other contains sex pheromone, and both contain either insecti

We present the results of a confidential telephone survey of ENT units in England on the disinfection of flexible fibre-optic nasendoscopes out-of-hours. The on-call residents of 124 units were contacted and questioned. In 35.1 per cent of units surveyed, the on-call resident was primarily responsible for cleaning the scopes after use. Only 46 per cent of these junior doctors had access to a chemical sterilant to allow for high-level disinfection of these scopes. Provision for disinfection of scopes was poorer in teaching hospitals and in units that served inner city populations. Only 12.1 per

Vaporized hydrogen peroxide (VHP) terminal sterilization is one of the most promising techniques for sterilizing temperature-sensitive medical instruments like endoscopes. This technique requires only electricity and sterilant containers to perform the sterilization process in less than 1 h without any substantial safety concerns for patients, personnel, and the environment. This review studies recent advances and future trends in VHP sterilization cycle development using U.S. patent applications and 510(k) premarket notifications. In this regard, the patents focused on increasing VHP concentr
