Abstract:
Joshua Glasgow’s (2020) is a beautiful, philosophically rich book. Here I raise five main questions and criticisms. The first argues that holistic gratitude is too demanding: someone who can muster only fragmented gratitude is not failing to do and feel what is required; thus holistic gratitude is morally optional. The second suggests ways in which the metaphors Glasgow uses to express the idea of radiant value are problematic. The third notes that radiant value seems a sort of inverted cousin of the doctrine of organic unities but points to an important analogy between them that problematizes the notion of radiant value. The fourth discusses Glasgow’s giving up on holistic gratitude in s penultimate chapter and briefly explores the strong affinities holistic gratitude to certain features of Roman Stoicism. The fifth draws on a passage from Henry James’ and the classical Chinese notion of harmony to gesture toward a conception of holistic gratitude that might, after all, provide solace for passing away.

Abstract:
AbstractSmall bone fragments have often been interpreted as the residues of stews or grease extraction. In international historical archaeological research, stew interpretations have often focused on enslaved or underclass groups or on those who had limited access to sufficient amounts of food or faced nutritional deficiencies. These analyses have widely been uncritical, and the small fragment sizes can be better explained as the products of taphonomic processes such as weathering, trampling, and carnivore scavenging. This work presents results from experimentally chopped long bones from cows, sheep, goats, and pigs that identify butchery and fracture patterns that can be used to evaluate past stew interpretations and provide comparative models for future analyses.

Abstract:
The objective of the study was to examine the microbial quality of street-vended foods in Sibasa and Thohoyandou markets of Thulamela Municipality, South Africa. Gravy, salad, beef and chicken stews were randomly sampled from seven markets. Microbiological international standard methods were used for the Total plate counts, coliform bacteria, Salmonella spp., Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, yeast and mould counts. The microbial counts (log10 CFU/g) of foods sold at Thohoyandou ranged from 2.0±2.08 to too numerous to count for Total plate count, 2.0±1.00 to 6.6±7.57 for Salmonella spp., 2.0±2.64 to 3.9±6.03 for S. aureus, 2.3±1.73 to too numerous to count for yeast. At Sibasa, microbial counts (log10 CFU/g) ranged from 2.1±6.24 to 6.9±5.30 for total plate count, 2.0±0.00 to 3.8±10.00 for coliform bacteria, 2.0±2.64 to 4.7±8.33 for Salmonella spp., 2.0±6.03 to 3.9±9.30, for S. aureus, 2.1±1.00 to 3.7±39.58 for yeast and 2.0±1.15 to 4.9±21.66 for B. cereus. Mould was not detected in all the foods sold at both locations. The total plate count was significantly different (P<0.05) between salads and chicken stews. For Salmonella spp., significant differences (P<0.05) were observed between salads and beef stews. For S. aureus, a significant difference was found in salads (P<0.05). For yeast, significant differences (P<0.05) were observed between salads and beef stews. The fact that most street-vended foods were contaminated with a range of microorganisms is a matter of public concern. Department of Health, South Africa should initiate a food safety program for the vendors to be trained in hygienic preparation of foods and good sanitation practices to better safeguard the health and wellness of consumers. There is also a need for Environmental Health Practitioners to mount a better monitoring system that would contain selling street-vended food that is unfit for human consumption.

Abstract:
Studies on the association between gastric cancer (GC) and the intake of soup-based dish groups (noodles and dumplings, soups, and stews), which are sodium-contributing foods, in Korea are insufficient, and the results of studies on the intake of pickled vegetables such as kimchi are inconsistent. This study aimed to determine the association between the incidence of GC and the daily intake of high-sodium dish groups (noodles and dumplings, soups, stews, and pickled vegetables) and whether these associations differ depending on behavioral risk factors for GC. In this case-control study, subjects aged 20–79 years were recruited from two hospitals between December 2002 and September 2006. A total of 440 cases and 485 controls were recruited, of which 307 pairs were matched and included for the analysis. In our results, a higher intake of noodles and dumplings was associated with a significantly increased incidence of GC. In the participants who consumed past or current alcohol, a higher intake of noodles and dumplings was associated with a significantly increased incidence of GC. Our results suggest that efforts to reduce the daily sodium intake from noodles and dumplings are needed to prevent and reduce the incidence of GC.

Abstract:
Background. Plant-based foods are staple diets and main micronutrient sources of most rural Ghanaian households. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of Amaranthus cruentus and Solanum macrocarpon leafy vegetable flour on micronutrient intake and nutritional status of rural Ghanaian school children. Method. This study was a randomized controlled trial that consisted of baseline data collection and a three-month nutrition intervention feeding program. Two groups of 53 children, age 4–9 years, involved in the Ghana School Feeding Program took part in the study. An experimental group consumed Amaranthus cruentus and Solanum macrocarpon leaves flour (ACSMLVF) stews and soup. The control group consumed stews and soup without ACSMLVF. Haemoglobin and serum vitamin A concentrations were determined. Dietary and anthropometric data were collected and analysed. Participants were screened for malaria parasitaemia and hookworm. Results. Anaemia was present in 41.5% and 37.3%, respectively, of the intervention and control groups at baseline. It was present in 28.3% and 53.3%, respectively, at the end of the study. This was significantly different (p=0.024). There was a low vitamin A concentration in 66.0% and 64.7% at baseline and 20.8% and 23.4% at the end of the study in the intervention and control groups, respectively. The mean iron, zinc, and provitamin A (beta-carotene) intakes of the intervention group were 14.2 ± 7.1 mg, 5.7 ± 2.1 mg, and 214.5 ± 22.6 μg, respectively, at baseline. Those of the control were 13.7 ± 6.1 mg, 5.4 ± 2.1 mg, and 210.6 ± 20.1 μg, respectively. At the end of the study, the mean intake of iron, zinc, and beta-carotene for the intervention group was 24.1 ± 10.9 mg, 13.8 ± 8.2 mg, and 694.2 ± 33.1 μg, respectively. The intake of these micronutrients for the control at the end of the study was 14.8 ± 6.2 mg, 5.9 ± 2.3 mg, and 418.4 ± 34.7 μg, respectively. Conclusion. Consumption of ACSMLVF stews and soup increased iron, zinc, and beta-carotene intakes. Anaemia prevalence was lower in the intervention group at the end of the study.

Abstract:
The general theme running throughout this study is the enhancement of step functions which have been degraded by blur and/or additive noise in some form or another. We deal with step functions in both one and two dimensions. The two main areas of study are i. The enhancement of Synthetic Aperture Radar data. This is data which can be thought of some form of step function in two dimensions, and, ii. The enhancement of one dimensional step functions which have been degraded by both blur and additive noise. Although (i) is very specific to Synthetic Aperture Radar data (ii) is far more general and can be applied to any such data in this general category of steps. In fact a very wide range of problems can be thought of within the general context of being step-related. We describe and develop several methods is this study to deal with such problems.

Abstract:
The action and tradition of pilgrimage in any faith, is the accumulation of many small steps over a great distance leading to a sacred destination. Pilgrimage is a way of letting the outward journey of our bodies enrich and enable the inner journeys of our hearts and minds. Roman Catholics undertake the pilgrimage to Rome in order to be close to the center of their faith. Millions flock to Lourdes, France to experience healing through touching the holy water where the Virgin Mary appeared to St. Bernadette. Others walk on foot across the ancient 800 km sacred route across Spain called the Camino de Santiago following in the footsteps of St. James. Regardless of the destination, pilgrims move within the geography of faith, along a path scattered with traces of holiness, in places where God’s grace has been shown abundantly to bring conversions of holiness. My work is a visual representation of my personal experiences as a sojourner to these three sacred landscapes in an attempt to understand the profound sense of purpose and awakening that I encountered along the way.

Starovoytov, Artem. "Steps towards silicon optoelectronics." Thesis, De Montfort University, 1999. http://hdl.handle.net/2086/10699.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis addresses the issue of a potential future microelectronics technology, namely the possibility of utilising the optical properties of nanocrystalline silicon for optoelectronic circuits. The subject is subdivided into three chapters. Chapter 1 is an introduction. It formulates the oncoming problem for microelectronic development, explains the basics of Integrated Optoelectronics, introduces porous silicon as a new light-emitting material and gives a brief review of other competing light-emitting material systems currently under investigation. Examples of existing porous silicon devices are given. Chapter 2 reviews the basic physics relevant to the subject of this thesis and informs on the present situation in this field of research, including both experimental and theoretical knowledge gained up-to-date. The chapter provides the necessary background for correct interpretation of the results reported in Chapter 3 and for a realistic decision on the direction for future work. Chapter 3 describes my own experimental and computational results within the framework of the subject, obtained at De Montfort University. These include: onestep preparation of laterally structured porous silicon with photoluminescence and microscopy characterisation, Raman spectroscopy of porous silicon, a polarisation study of the photoluminescence from porous silicon, computer simulations of the conductivity of two-component media and of laser focused atomic deposition for nanostructure fabrication. Thus, this thesis makes a dual contribution to the chosen field: it summarises the present knowledge on the possibility of utilising optical properties of nanocrystalline silicon in silicon-based electronics, and it reports new results within the framework of the subject. The main conclusion is that due to its promising optoelectronic properties nanocrystalline silicon remains a prospective competitor for the cheapest and fastest microelectronics of the next century.

Hamalainen, Hasse Joel. "Aristotle's steps to virtue." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/19515.

Full text
Abstract:
How to become morally virtuous? Among the students of Aristotle, it is often assumed that the philosopher does not have a fully worked-out theoretical answer to this question. Some interpreters (e.g. Burnyeat 1980, most recently Curzer 2012) have, however, recognised that Aristotle may have a comprehensive theory of moral development. However, even those interpreters have made only scarce attempts to study Aristotle’s theory in connection with the questions about his moral psychology. Unlike Aristotle’s theory of moral development as such, several of those questions are among the most debated issues in current Aristotle scholarship - for example, whether we need reason to identify good actions or whether habituated non-rational affects suffice; what makes us responsible for our actions, and how the philosopher conceives the relationship between phronesis and moral motivation. In my thesis, I aim at connecting these important questions with Aristotle’s theory of moral development. I hope to show that this approach will yield a picture on which Aristotle’s theory is divisible into two steps that one has to choose to take in order to become morally virtuous. I argue first that identifying good ends, and actions, requires reason. In order to become morally responsible, a person has thus to develop a rational ability to identify good actions. I show that Aristotle’s term for such ability is synesis. The first step to virtue, I conclude, is to use this ability well, to choose to become virtuous and habituate one’s character into acting well. The second step is to acquire phronesis, understanding why good actions are good, to complement a habituated character. Developing of phronesis requires both considerable experience in acting well and philosophical teaching about ethics, but it is necessary for moral virtue. Although a finely-habituated person is invulnerable to akrasia with regard to pleasures even if he did not have phronesis, Aristotle allows, I show, that he might still be prone to impetuous akrasia, whereas phronimos could avoid akratic behaviour in any situation.

Marimo, Patience. "Steps Towards Deciphering the Post-Polyketide Synthase Tailoring Steps in the Phoslactomycin Biosynthesis Pathway." PDXScholar, 2015. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/2408.

Full text
Abstract:
Phoslactomycins (PLMs) are a group of natural products belonging to a polyketides class. These polyketides are synthesized by sequential reaction catalyzed by a collection of enzymes activities called polyketide synthases. A polyketide is a large class of diverse compounds that are characterized by more than two carbonyl groups connected by single intervening carbon atoms. In other words, a polyketide is a polymer whose monomer is a ketide. The PLMs are also known as phosphazomycins or phospholines. These compounds were isolated based on antifungal and antitumor activities. This array of promising biological activities has stimulated research into the field of PLMs for treatment of various diseases such as aspergillosis. A significant success has been reported in understanding and manipulating PLM biosynthesis. However, its post-polyketide biosynthetic mechanism remains to be elucidated. In this study, we established steps needed to pave the way for the elucidation of the post-polyketide synthase tailoring steps in the phoslactomycin biosynthetic pathway. Various, biological activities of polyketide natural products are often linked with specific structural motifs, biosynthetically introduced after construction of the polyketide core. Therefore, investigation of such "post-polyketide synthase (PKS)" modifications is important, and the accumulated knowledge on these processes can be applied for combinatorial biosynthesis to generate new polyketide derivatives with enhanced biological activity. In this study, the enzymes and genes responsible for the modification of the phoslactomycin moiety have been investigated to verify their functions and to study how they are coordinated to achieve the desired phoslactomycin. The proposed modification steps in the PLM biosynthesis pathway involves, PlmT4 a cytochrome P450 monooxygenase, PlmT5, a kinase, and PlmT8 an oxidoreductase. These enzymes were successfully cloned, overexpressed, and purified from an overexpression vector. Mutant strains for two genes plmT4 and plmT8 were either constructed or studied. The function of PlmT4 tailoring enzyme was characterized, by gene disruption and an in vitro enzyme activity assay. The isolation of PLM 1 an intermediate analog from plmT4 mutant strain and the observation of a malonylated PLMs, suggests that the malonyl side chain is introduced during polyketide chain formation These results, will pave the way to delineate the intermediary steps between the PLM PKS product(s) that is released from the PLM PKS and the formation of the final phoslactomycin.

Stower, M. J. "Early steps in neural induction." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2012. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1352629/.

Full text
Abstract:
Neural induction is the instructive interaction whereby signals emitted from the organizer direct cells in the ectoderm to a neural fate and thereby to form the neural plate. Recent work in many labs has suggested that it involves a hierarchy of molecular events. Here, I investigate the earliest steps in the neural induction cascade and the signals that define them. Many genes expressed during the neural induction cascade have been shown to be regulated by FGF. However the signals that induce three of the genes, Bert, TrkC and Obelix, are unknown. I therefore tested candidate signalling molecules by misexpression analysis. While Obelix is also regulated by FGF, none of many factors tested, including FGF, retinoic acid, somatostatin, noggin, insulin, and increasing intracellular calcium were able to induce expression of TrkC or Bert. BMP also plays an important role in neural induction, I therefore studied how cells may integrate TGFβ signalling through Smad1 and Smad2. I used a BiFCo approach to investigate Smad protein binding interactions in culture and in vivo, however this did not turn out to be a useful method for this question. Finally I investigated the ground-state of the epiblast at the start of the neural induction cascade. Culture of early epiblast explants showed, unexpectedly, that cells initially enter a state similar to that of the neural plate border, confirmed by their subsequent differentiation into lens. This correlates with the finding that BMP signalling in vivo only affects cells of the neural plate border region and suggests why explants can be neuralized by BMP. Overall, the experiments reveal a hitherto unknown importance of a neural border cell-state, and suggest that lens is the ground state at the start of the neural induction cascade.

Abstract:
Sempervivum tectorum has a similar effect as aloe vera, which is known in the treatment of various skin diseases. This herb is considered one of the safest remedies for a wide range of skin diseases. Due to its anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties, it also serves as an excellent first aid for burns, stings and bites, because it provides quick relief and calming. Freshly squeezed juice from the leaves of the houseplant is used in the treatment of nervous disorders, epilepsy and restless dreams. The leaves are edible and can be used as an addition to salads or stews. They are not particularly tasty, but as they are rich in water, they can be put in a juicer together with other fruits or vegetables and become a refreshing drink. It is used in folk herbal medicine and as a medicine. The aim of this study was to determine the moisture content, total extracted substances, extract density, vitamin C, organic acids and proteins in house extracts.

The rather poor students’ performances and the reluctance of students to attend courses were the motives for a project that entails the redesign of conventional statistics courses, into courses designed according to the characteristics of a competence-based approach that integrates research methods, statistics and psychology subjects into holistic authentic tasks throughout the psychology curriculum. This paper presents the findings of the first redesigned course. The competence-based course resulted, compared to the conventional course, into higher students’ performance and higher scores on learning competences, attitudes and motivation.

Abstract:
The curriculum for undergraduate students offers not only basic statistics courses but also optional courses regarding statistical methods for times series, modelling, epidemiology, econometrics and other topics potentially useful in a statistician’s career. This means that the students believe that they will get a comprehensive statistical toolbox for solving a variety of real life problems after graduation. But can they use the tools in a complex reality? The aim is to present the use of inter-disciplinary statistical problem solving courses for introducing the complexity of reality to statistics students before graduation. Experiences of the discordance between students’ theoretical and practical skills regarding statistical description, analysis and understanding will be given.

Abstract:
In the teaching of introductory statistics to first year students economics and business, the Maastricht University uses a blended learning environment that allows students to design a individualized environment by attuning available learning tools to personal preferences. The blended learning environment consists of tutorials based on the problem-based learning principle, lectures, independent learning and an electronic learning environment based upon knowledge space theory: ALEKS. Usage of only the first component is required; the usage of other components can be set according to individual preferences. In this study, we will focus on the intensity of the use of the electronic learning environment ALEKS and investigate the relationship between this and student learning dispositions in a cluster analytic study. Data of about 4650 students taking this course are used. This study aims to contribute on the topic ‘development of tools to improve students’learning of statistics’.

Abstract:
OECD has launched its Global Project that aims to develop new measures of the nature and progress of societies and to increase the capability of citizens to understand and use this information. We contend that this needs to be accompanied by a developing programme at school level to equip the next generation to understand relationships in complex data. This paper looks at the current uses of data within the UK curriculum and identifies some barriers to change. We show examples of tasks which offer opportunities for students to work with real, relevant, complex data in ways which develop sought after generic employment skills, such as collaborative working, communication and integration of ICT skills. We believe that this research has important implications for the statistical literacy of both the next generation of citizens and the current adult population.

Abstract:
Experts are increasingly being called upon to quantify their knowledge, particularly in situations where data is not yet available or of limited relevance. In many cases this involves asking experts to estimate probabilities. For example experts, in ecology or related fields, might be called upon to estimate probabilities of incidence or abundance of species, and how they relate to environmental factors. Although many ecologists undergo some training in statistics at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, this does not necessarily focus on interpretations of probabilities. More accurate elicitation can be obtained by training experts prior to elicitation, and if necessary tailoring elicitation to address the expert’s strengths and weaknesses. Here we address the first step of diagnosing conceptual understanding of probabilities. We refer to the psychological literature which identifies several common biases or fallacies that arise during elicitation. These form the basis for developing a diagnostic questionnaire, as a tool for supporting accurate elicitation, particularly when several experts or elicitors are involved. We report on a qualitative assessment of results from a pilot of this questionnaire. These results raise several implications for training experts, not only prior to elicitation, but more strategically by targeting them whilst still undergraduate or postgraduate students.

Abstract:
This paper discusses the process of designing and empirically testing measures of teachers’ technological pedagogical statistical knowledge (TPSK), addressing conference theme # 3 -- next steps in statistics education with respect to preparing teachers to implement new (usually, technology-rich) curricula. The authors conceptualize this knowledge in the broader context of technological pedagogical content knowledge and provide some specific examples of items applied to statistics. In creating measures to capture this complex construct, the authors drew upon literature of students’ (mis)conceptions, authentic teaching experiences, and alignment with statistical expectations for middle school teachers. Results from a pilot survey of middle school teachers suggest that some items have potential to uncover aspects of teachers’ (mis)con

Abstract:
In the last decade, statistics and data analysis have become a more visible component of the secondary school mathematics curriculum in the United States. In most cases, statistics and data analysis topics have been divided up and spread through the mathematics curriculum. However, many important concepts of statistics are not mathematical in nature and are not easily integrated into existing mathematics courses. As a consequence, most students complete their secondary education having seen a number of graphical and numerical statistical methods but having not encountered many key concepts required for mature statistical reasoning. Recognizing that the addition of a separate statistics course to the secondary curriculum is unlikely, an alternate approach is proposed. With support from the American Statistical Association (ASA) and the ASA/NCTM (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics) Joint Committee on Probability and Statistics in the K-12 Curriculum, a capstone experience for secondary students has been designed. Making Sense of Statistical Studies is a coordinated and coherent set of case studies that can be integrated into mathematics courses to provide students with an understanding of the data analysis process and help them develop the conceptual understanding that provides the foundation for statistical reasoning. This paper contributes to the conference topic of curricular materials and tools for improving students’ learning at school level.

Abstract:
This study examined the teaching practices of 227 college instructors of introductory statistics (from the health and behavioral sciences). Using primarily multidimensional scaling (MDS) techniques, a two-dimensional, 10-item teaching practice scale, TISS (Teaching of Introductory Statistics Scale), was developed and validated. The two dimensions (subscales) were characterized as constructivist, and behaviorist, and are orthogonal to each other. Criterion validity of this scale was established in relation to instructors’ attitude toward teaching, and acceptable levels of reliability were obtained. A significantly higher level of behaviorist practice (less reform-oriented) was reported by instructors from the USA, and instructors with academic degrees in mathematics and engineering. This new scale (TISS) will allow us to empirically assess and describe the pedagogical approach (teaching practice) of instructors of introductory statistics. Further research is required in order to be conclusive about the structural and psychometric properties of this scale.

Abstract:
This study reveals the pedagogical decision making undertaken when designing instruction for primary level statistics. We report on the activity of five groups of preservice teachers when engaging in Lesson Study and identify the content and pedagogical content knowledge needed for teaching statistics. The research highlights the power of lesson study to reveal aspects of statistical reasoning that are drawn heavily upon in the teaching of statistics and identifies fundamental weaknesses in statistical understanding that may not be uncovered through standard methods of assessment. The paper concludes with suggestions for how we can better prepare teachers for implementing statistics curricula at the primary level.
