Abstract:
This study explores the use of the strategy of erasure in environmental science discourses to explore the deletion of the agent. Three environmental science textbooks have been chosen for analysis. Stibbe’s (2015) framework of erasure has been used as a model for analyzing the data. He asserts that the natural world is marginalized in texts through the use of certain linguistic strategies; these strategies run throughout the whole discourse to construct the erasure of the ecosystem. The researchers aim to identify erasure at the level of void, which is the complete erasure or deletion of the agent from these discourses. Stibbe mentions nine linguistic strategies for the construction of erasure in environmental discourses. These strategies are passive voice, nominalization, co-hyponymy, hyponymy, metaphor, metonymy, construction of noun phrases, transitivity patterns and massification. For the construction of void, the researchers have analyzed the strategies of passivization and nominalization. It has been found that these strategies are pervasive in the discourses, thereby deleting the agent and constructing void. The study suggests a new way to look at the language of ecological discourses and proposes further studies on how euphemistic language in these discourses can negatively influence readers. Keywords: erasure, mask, void, environmental discourse

Abstract:

Abstract:
There is a remarkable increase in fibrinolytic activity during extracorporeal circulation. This activity is due to the release of tissue-plasminogen activator (t-PA) (Stibbe, Kluft e. a. 1982). A reduction of blood substitution requirements can be achieved^by retransfusion of shed mediastinal blood after open heart surgery. However thereby is an additional effect on fibrinolysis. We measured following parameters of the fibrinolytic system in 20 cardiac surgical patients before operation (A), after ECC (B) before retransfusion (C), in the drainage (D) and 20 minutes after retransfusion (E):The distance between end of ECC and retransfusion was 4 to 5 hours. The t-PA activity measurements after ECC (B) were disturbed by high heparin levels. In the shed blood (D) a highly significant increase of t-PA and D-dimer was noted, whereas no inhibitor activity was measurable at this instance, indicating consumption of the inhibitor. The high inhibitor levels found before and after retransfusion are due to the longer half-live. The D-dimer concentration increases significantly after compared to before retransfusion. However following retransfusion no significant variation in plasminogen and antiplasmin and no increased bleeding tendency could be observed.

Abstract:

It is an often heard contention: 'Structural Codes stifle creativity, they have become too prescriptive, we don't need them etc'. Is this true? Where is the evidence? Do these views have an objective and authoritative basis? Or are they part of the folk law, gaining a degree of credibility simply through repeated stating? What is the alternative?

By examining the true role of Structural Design Codes, including the sort of material that is and is not provided by them and the processes employed for their production, an attempt will be made to set their position properly in context. This will be based on the author's experience - gained over nearly half a century - as a researcher developing new design rules and procedures, as a teacher to both students and practitioners explaining the basis of Code rules, as a user providing direct input into projects, as an 'expert' responsible for advising on the appropriateness and implementation of Codes and as a member and chairman of committees responsible for the actual writing of Design Codes.

Stine, William Wren, and Montie McMickell. "Stereopsis and the discrimination of rigidity." In OSA Annual Meeting. Washington, D.C.: Optica Publishing Group, 1992. http://dx.doi.org/10.1364/oam.1992.thvv1.

Full text
Abstract:
Isometric projections of three-dimensional, rigidly rotating polyhedra appear to deform under certain circumstances (Green, 1961, JEP). Relative to those that appear to be rigid, rigidly rotating polyhedra that appear to deform are more difficult to discriminate from ones that actually deform during rotation (Sparrow and Stine, 1990, ARVO). When a rigidly rotating polyhedron appears to deform, the introduction of retinal disparity can result in the perception of rigidity (Sparrow and Stine, 1987a, ARVO). We used polyhedra that were configured either to appear nonrigid or to appear rigid while rigidly rotating (see Sparrow and Stine, 1987b, 1988, OSA). These two classes of stimuli were then presented, one at a time, rotating rigidly (noise trials) or rotating with real deformations (signal + noise trials). Sensitivity to real deformations was less for polyhedra that were more likely to appear to deform than for those that were more likely to appear rigid (replicating Sparrow and Stine, 1990). Adding disparity to a stereo pair of polyhedra that appear to deform can increase sensitivity to real deformations. However, one stereo-blind subject showed no increase in sensitivity with disparity. Disparity allows the subject to see the rigidity of the polyhedron and then discriminate deforming from non-deforming stimuli.

Eslava, Marcela, Alessandro Maffioli, and Marcela Meléndez Arjona. Second-tier Government Banks and Access to Credit: Micro-Evidence from Colombia. Inter-American Development Bank, March 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0011364.

Full text
Abstract:
Government-owned development banks have often been justified by the need to respond to financial market imperfections that hinder the establishment and growth of promising businesses, and as a result, stifle economic development more generally. However, evidence on the effectiveness of these banks in mitigating financial constraints is still lacking. To fill this gap, this paper analyzes the impact of Bancoldex, Colombia's publicly owned development bank, on access to credit. It uses a unique dataset that contains key characteristics of all loans issued to businesses in Colombia, including the financial intermediary through which the loan was granted and whether the loan was funded with Bancoldex resources. The paper assesses effects on access to credit by comparing Bancoldex loans to loans from other sources and study the impact of receiving credit from Bancoldex on a firm's subsequent credit history. To address concerns about selection bias, it uses a combination of models that control for fixed effects and matching techniques. The findings herein show that credit relationships involving Bancoldex funding are characterized by lower interest rates, larger loans, and loans with longer terms. These characteristics translated into lower average interest rates and larger average loans for firms that used Bancoldex credit. Average loans of Bancoldex' beneficiaries also exhibit longer terms, although this effect can take two years to materialize. Finally, the findings show evidence of a demonstration effect of Bancoldex: beneficiary firms that have access Bancoldex credit are able to significantly expand the number of intermediaries with whom they have credit relationships.
