ABSTRACT: This essay explores the contributions of Josephine Stiles, a Black entrepre neur from Savannah, Georgia, to the history of film exhibition. She owned and operated the Pekin Theatre (1909–29), and I examine how Stiles responded to Jim Crow challenges and the movies' growing popularity by converting her theater into a palace at the same time as the moguls commonly associated with this phenomenon. The story of Stiles and the Pekin not only makes race central to the narrative of the movie palace's origins, but her accomplishments also highlight Black achievement as meaningful, not marginal, to that history.

Full text
Abstract:
For birds, moulting is an energetically costly endeavour (Murphy & King 1991), the timing and location of which may be flexible and governed by local ecological factors (Pyle et al. 2009, Rohwer et al. 2005). Some species or individuals may pause during long-distance migration, or migrate specifically to moult (Greenberg et al. 1974, Pyle et al. 2009, Rohwer et al. 2005, 2008). This strategy may be most common when food abundance reaches a nadir at the end of the breeding period, promoting movement to areas where food is more plentiful and the energetic and nutritive demands of moult may be met more suitably (Rohwer et al. 2005). This pattern is exemplified by insectivorous songbirds breeding in temperate, western North America that pause on southward migration to moult amidst the food flush that occurs following heavy rains in the Mexican monsoon region (Pyle et al. 2009, Rohwer et al. 2005, 2009), or more rarely, migrate upslope after breeding to moult in more moist, productive areas at higher elevation (Butler et al. 2002, Greenberg et al. 1974, Rohwer et al. 2008, Steele & McCormick 1995). Such altitudinal migration may be much more common in the Neotropics where many species engage in seasonal shifts in elevation. Hypotheses proposed to explain this behaviour, however, have focused on links made between migration and a principally frugivorous or nectarivorous diet (Levey & Stiles 1992, Stiles 1985, 1988) and not on moult requirements or phenology. Fruit and nectar availability may vary seasonally over an elevational gradient, and birds may migrate in order to track peak abundances (Levey & Stiles 1992, Loiselle & Blake 1991). Hummingbirds may also track arthropod (particularly spider) abundance, but this possibility remains little explored (Cotton 2007, Stiles 1980).

Abstract:
In CIE 191:2010, the Commission Internationale de l’Eclairage recommends a mesopic photometry system based on peripheral visual tasks. For implementation of the system, the visual adaptation field needs to be defined, taking into account the surrounding luminance effect on the state of adaptation. A series of vision experiments in the mesopic range has been conducted to measure the surrounding luminance effect with respect to the angle between a peripheral task point and a point source. The results show that the surrounding luminance effect at a peripheral task point decreases with increasing angle at a larger slope than existing models, such as the Stiles-Holladay equation, the Commission Internationale de l’Eclairage general disability glare formula and the Stiles–Crawford equation. A new model for the surrounding luminance effect is proposed.

Full text
Abstract:
The summation index technique introduced by Stiles has been applied to heterochromatic brightness matching in order to explain individual differences in luminous efficiency functions for brightness. Such functions were obtained for 2-deg and 10-deg fields from twelve subjects, and the difference between the two fields was compared with the macular pigment density tabulated in Wyszecki and Stiles's book. A summation index was obtained for red and green stimuli combinations and the results are expressed in the form of an equation with nonlinear coefficients. The same equation is applied to the brightness luminous efficiency functions and the individual differences in the efficiency function are interpreted as the result of different contributions of opponent chromatic channels to the perception of brightness.

Full text
Abstract:
Almost a century ago, Stiles and Crawford reported that the human eye is more sensitive to light entering through the pupil center than through its periphery (Stiles-Crawford effect). This psychophysical phenomenon, later found to correlate with photoreceptor orientation toward the pupil, was dynamically phototropic, adjustable within days to an eccentrically displaced pupil. For decades, this phototropism has been speculated to involve coordinated movements of the rectilinear photoreceptor outer and inner segments. We report here that, unexpectedly, the murine photoreceptor outer segment has a seemingly light-independent orientation, but the inner segment’s orientation undergoes light-dependent movement, giving rise to nonrectilinear outer and inner segments in adult mice born and reared in darkness. Light during an early critical period (~P0 to P8), however, largely sets the correct photoreceptor orientation permanently afterward. Unexpectedly, abolishing rod and cone phototransductions did not mimic darkness in early life, suggesting photosignaling extrinsic to rods and cones is involved.

Full text
Abstract:
The origins, development, and status of the π mechanism theory are reviewed. The paper is divided into four sections. In the first section Stiles's general ideas about ‘color mechanisms’ are examined, and it is concluded that foremost amongst these is a mathematical theory that specifies certain formal rules or laws that should govern a certain class of observations. In the case of π mechanisms, the class of observations is that of two-color thresholds, and the defining laws are the two well-known displacement laws. Five other laws that two-color increment-threshold observations should obey, if the latter are governed by ideal π mechanisms, are abstracted from Stiles's writings. In the second section literature pertinent to the testing of the seven Stilesian laws is reviewed, and it is asked whether or not the seven π mechanisms of Stiles do in fact obey the laws. In the third section the relation of the π mechanism concept to physiological concepts is examined, and its relation to the ‘cone fundamental’ is discussed; the evidence pertinent to the question: ‘Are any of the π mechanisms of the single-fundamental type?’ is then reviewed. The last section is devoted to the evolution of Stiles's ideas in the period after 1959 when Stiles's own investigations and those of others propelled him to reject the initial (1953) π mechanism theory as an adequate characterization of the data of the two-color threshold.
