Abstract:
Crest modifications such as a storm wall, parapet or a bullnose are widely used to reduce the wave overtopping over coastal structures where spatial and visual demands restrict the crest heights, especially in urban areas. Although reduction factors of these modifications have been studied for sloped structures in EurOtop Manual (2016), there is limited information regarding the vertical structures. This paper presents the experimental set-up and first results of wave overtopping tests for a vertical wall with several different super structure types: a) seaward storm wall, b) sloping promenade

Od rozpaczy do wiary: uciszenie burzy
27 marca 2020 r. papież Franciszek wzniósł do Pana modlitwę błagalną w imieniu całej ludzkości, prosząc o zakończenie pandemii Covid-19.

Abstract. An analysis is given of the account of a globe of fire observed in Zafra (Spain) in the middle of the 16th century. During a strong storm, Conde Don Pedro observed what he described as a globe of fire that was directed against the city and abruptly changed course. He attributed the change in course to a miracle. He described neither any damage nor sound.

Abstract:
As sea levels rise and extreme weather events become more frequent due to climate change, coastal urban areas are increasingly vulnerable to wave overtopping and flooding. Retrofitting existing vertical seawalls with retreated storm walls represents a key adaptive strategy, especially in the Mediterranean, where steep foreshores and limited public space constrain conventional coastal defenses. This study investigates the effectiveness of storm walls in reducing wave overtopping on vertical walls with steep foreshores (1:7 to 1:10) through high-fidelity numerical simulations using the SWASH mod

Medieval pilgrims making the dangerous journey from the Norman-Breton coast to the island monastery of Mont-Saint-Michel would have passed a tall stone cross rising out of the sands about halfway between the mainland and the north shore of the Mont. In the unlikely event that the visitors had not already heard the story of this monument, the so-called “croix des grèves,” they were sure to hear it—and perhaps even see it reenacted—once they arrived at their destination, since the miracle it commemorated was one of the most famous in the shrine's vast store of legend. Each morning we wake up to an ongoing miracle. Light is there for us and it forms a level. Along this level I see the color-contrasts of the Western mountain range’s phospho-resce. Sounds awaken too. They awaken out of the level that is the murmur of nature from which the cry of hawks, the whining of coyotes fill the air. And close by, the harsh col-ored billboards stick up in the level of the light as the the cars and trucks roll by, hurried and noisy, emerging from the level that is sound, the sound of the strong winds blowing up a storm heading east to the plains where they meet the Gulf mo
