For elderly Canadians, the prevalence of vision impairment caused by degenerative retinal pathologies, such as age-related macular degeneration and retinitis pigmentosa, is at an occurrence rate of 14 percent, and on the rise. It has been shown that visual function can be restored by electrically stimulating intact retinal tissue with an array of micro-electrodes with suitable signals. Commercial retinal implants carrying such a micro-electrode array achieve this, but to date must receive power and data over copper wire cable passing through a permanent surgical incision in the eye wall

Various passive techniques have traditionally been used in order to reduce waves and vibrations, and their harmful effects. In addition, the use of passive techniques often involve adding mass to the system, which is undesirable in many applications.

As an alternative, active techniques can be used to manipulate system dynamics and to control the propagation of waves and vibrations. Abstract:
Since the wave of civil violence in the USA in the 1960s, many social theorists have tried to explain why riots occur. Despite at least 50 years of research since then, there is still not enough insight to anticipate large events like the 2011 Arab Spring and London riots. The main goal of this thesis is therefore to improve understanding about how underlying conditions influence and drive riot dynamics, such as the intensity, spread, and duration. I develop a new mechanistic and stochastic agent-based model for riots. Previous models have either only targeted general phenomena associated with

World economies increasingly demand reliable and economical power supply and distribution. To achieve this aim the majority of power systems are becoming interconnected, with several power utilities supplying the one large network. One problem that occurs in a large interconnected power system is the regular occurrence of system disturbances which can result in the creation of intra-area oscillating modes. These modes can be regarded as the transient responses of the power system to excitation, which are generally characterised as decaying sinusoids. For a power system operating ideally these

If the disturbance model is known, the parameters of the controller can be optimized for system output variance. However, the system output variance is bigger than white noise, because the EWMA controller is not always the best controller for the purpose of optimized output variance. Forest systems are made up of a large number of processes interacting in complex spatial and temporal scales. Simulation can be used to study the way processes interact in space and time. A model, which approximates a system of forest growth, forest fire, bark beetle dynamics and harvesting, is constructed to observe spatial and temporal behaviour. System performance is analyzed through a sensitivity analysis of response indicators under different management regimes designed to simulate harvest and fire suppression. In this thesis appropriate statistical methods to overcome two types of problems that occur during parameter estimation in chemical engineering systems are studied. The first problem is having too many parameters to estimate from limited available data, assuming that the model structure is correct, while the second problem involves estimating unmeasured disturbances, assuming that enough data are available for parameter estimation. In the first part of this thesis, a model is developed to predict rates of undesirable reactions during the finishing stage of nylon 66 production. This model has t
