Full textCollective migration and swarming behavior are examples of self-organization and can be observed in various biological systems, such as in flocks of birds, schools of fish or populations of bacteria. In the center of this thesis lies a stochastic interacting particle system (IPS), which is a spatially discrete model with a continuous time scale that describes collective migration and which can be treated using analytical methods. The constructed model is not contained in any class of well-understood IPS’s. The largest part of this work is used to develop methods that can be used to study the long-term behavior of certain IPS’s. Thereby Gibbs-Measures play an important role and are related to temporally invariant measures. One can explain the properties of collective migration and propose a hypothesis for further analyses by a simulation study and by analysing the parameters migration velocity, sensitivity of individuals and (spatial) density of the initial distribution

Full textFor continuous time random dynamical systems there exist two important classes of generators: on the one hand stationary random differential quations, i.e. ordinary differential equations driven by a stationary random vector field, and on the other hand stochastic Stratonovich differential equations with white noise. While the first class fits well into the framework of the theory of random dynamical systems, the second class resisted for a long time the dynamical investigation due to the "conflict between ergodic theory and stochastic analysis". The main result of this thesis is that both classes of random dynamical systems are not essentially distinct, more precisely: For each stochastic Stratonovich differential equation with white noise (under usual regularity assumptions) there exists a stationary random differential equation such that the corresponding random dynamical systems are conjugate. As an application a version of the local Hartman/Grobman theorem for stochastic differential equations is proved.

Full textThe present dissertation aims at a detailed analysis and description of the long-term abiotic site conditions (river flow and groundwater) for the floodplain area under investigation, namely a hardwood forest in the nature reserve "Saalberghau" on the Middle Elbe close to the town Dessau. For this purpose, firstly a general concept which covers the modelling of the surface water and groundwater regime as well as a statistical interpretation of these two interconnected regimes is developed. It is assumed that only a synthesis of those separate modules can form a sufficient basis for a cohering analysis and description of the complex dynamics of these two regimes in floodplain forests by means of objective statistic parameters. Furthermore, only longterm statements can take into account the age spectrum of the hardwood stand

Full textCalcium is an important second messenger in cells serving as a critical link between extracellular stimuli and their cellular responses. The external signals are translated often into repeated increases of the cytosolic calcium concentration what is referred as oscillations. This work uses an interdisciplinary approach combining experimental techniques from biology, analytical tools from theoretical physics and computer simulations to clarify the question of the oscillation mechanism and how cells can generate globally coordinated calcium signals originated from local stochastic channel dynamics. In this context, the spatial inhomogeneous distribution of channels forming channel clusters plays a key role. Together with calcium pumps and buffers, this induces huge functional concentration gradients close to open clusters, leading to a hierarchical organization of calcium signals. Thus, calcium oscillations are predicted to be stochastic and to have a spatial character. This hypothesis is justified experimentally in the first part of this thesis by analyzing calcium oscillations of four different cell types. Hence, calcium signaling constructively uses thermal noise to build global signals. This contradicts the current opinion of the last decades of calcium being a representative cellular oscillator. Moreover, this makes calcium a first natural example of array enhanced coherent resonance. In the modeling part of this work, a physiological model for intracellular calcium dynamics in three spatial dimensions is developed that takes the spatial arrangement of cells seriously. It uses a detailed channel model for the discrete release sites and takes into account diffusion and buffer interaction of calcium. In dependence on physiologic parameters, the developed parallel Green''s cell algorithm generates in a natural way the whole spectrum of experimentally known calcium signals and fits the experimental data of the first part in an almost perfect manner.

Full textCoagulation is an important physical process for a wide range of technical and scientific applications and denotes the pairwise merging of clusters with different mass. The dynamic behaviour of the cluster concentration can be described by Smoluchowski's coagulation equation which is an infinite system of nonlinear differential equations. In this thesis we start with a nonlinear measure-valued equation generalizing the coagulation and other kinetic equations and integrating various physical and chemical processes. This equation allows a unified treatment of questions concerning existence of solutions and their approximation by means of stochastic particle systems. Here, the particle systems are defined as regular jump processes living on a set of point measures on a locally compact space. The thesis consists of three parts: First of all, approximation and convergence results for suitable jump rates and increasing particle numbers are proved by means of compactness theorems, martingale techniques and localizing procedures. Then, an application to the coagulation equation with fragmentation, source and efflux terms leads to new existence results and stochastic algorithms. Finally, their numerical features and efficiency are compared to known Monte Carlo methods and their specific convergence properties are presented with respect to a phase transition which is called gelation and leads to a loss of total cluster mass.
