Abstract:
The recruitment and biomass of a fish stock are influenced by their environmental conditions and anthropogenic pressures such as fishing. The variability in the environment often translates into fluctuations in recruitment, which then propagate throughout the stock biomass. In order to manage fish stocks sustainably, it is necessary to understand their dynamics. Here, we systematically explore the dynamics and sensitivity of fish stock recruitment and biomass to environmental noise. Using an age-structured and trait-based model, we explore random noise (white noise) and autocorrelated noise (r

Assessing the state of fish stocks requires the determination of descriptors. They correspond to the absolute and relative (to the carrying capacity of the habitat) fish biomasses in the ecosystem, and the absolute and relative (to the intrinsic growth rate of the population) fishing mortality resulting from catches. This allows, among other things, to compare the catch with the maximum sustainability yield. Some fish stocks are well described and monitored, but for many data-limited stocks, catch time series are remaining the only source of data. Recently, an algorithm (CMSY) has been propose

Meta-analysis was used to test the null hypothesis that recruitment is a series of random, independent events, against these two alternative hypotheses, for 153 marine spawning bony fish stocks and 31 salmonid stocks. Optimal harvest rates were computed using dynamic programming for mixed-stock fisheries exploiting two stocks of either natural or hatchery origin. Natural stocks were described by a Ricker spawner–recruit relationship and hatchery stocks were described by a rectilinear spawner–recruit relationship. For two natural stocks with low productivities, optimal harvest rates generally appeared to favor the stronger stock for a risk-neutral utility function and the weaker stock for a risk-averse utility function. For accurate stock assessment, survey design must consider fish behavior and ecology. Yearlings and older individuals of the commercially exploited cold-water species vendace (Coregonus albula) are found below the metalimnion through periods of thermal stratification. These stratification periods generally last for 3-4 months, from the middle of summer to early autumn. In lakes with heterogeneous distribution of depths, the habitat volume for vendace vary drastically within and across years, which affects the distribution and population densities. Variable thermal habitat volumes, with food an

Abstract:
Reef fish populations play a vital ecological and economic role in the coral reef ecosystems of Florida and the U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI). However, these populations face significant threats from habitat degradation, rising global temperature, coral diseases, and increased fishing pressures. Traditional fishery-dependent data have proven inadequate for accurately assessing reef fish populations, necessitating the development of standardized, fishery-independent methodology. This document presents the Cooperative Multiagency Reef Fish Monitoring Protocol, a unified methodology designed to asse

Internationally coordinated hydroacoustic surveys in the Baltic Sea have been operated by the Institute of Marine Research in Lysekil since 1978. The Baltic International Acoustic Survey (BIAS), is performed annually in October. The survey is mandatory for each EU member state around the Baltic Sea, and is regulated under the European Commission's Data Collection Framework (DCF). Sweden is responsible for collecting data from subdivision (SD) 27 as well as parts of SD 25, 26, 28, and 29. The purpose of the expedition is to assess the stock status of herring and sprat, and this is done by produ

The cruise AL594 "Baltic Cod" focused on the status of the Eastern Baltic cod stock, along with its prey fields (zooplankton and pelagic fish prey) and hydrographic boundary conditions. The cruise extended a 38yr long-term data series on (eco-)system composition and functioning of the Baltic Sea, with a focus on the deeper basins. Collaborations included (i) sampling and experimentation on phytoplankton-virus and -grazer interactions (Uni HH, Dr. Luisa Listmann) (ii) cod gonad and liver sampling for fecundity and parasite studies (in collaboration with Dr. Jonna Tomkiewicz, DTU Aqua) (iii) the
