Abstract:
The following inquiry began as an echo of my preoccupation long ago and far away with settings of late nineteenth-century French poetry. Mallarmé's ‘le cygne/signe’ arrives too late (involuntarily, I recall the immortal line ‘What time's the next swan?’) to be a player in the creation of Schubert's songs, but the great French poet had recourse to some of the same signifying swans at work in this composer's chosen poem by Friedrich Leopold zu Stolberg-Stolberg. Struck by an analogy in the words for D. 774 (published in March 1827 as op. 72), I dug a little deeper and discovered multiple specimens of these emblematic creatures from Greek and Roman literature, medieval lore, Reformation iconography and Romantic art.

Abstract:
Because of increased effluent quality standards the central sewage treatment plant (STP) of Stolberg is upgraded into a two stage plant according to the AB-process. Special peculiarities of the rebuilding are several combined technologies for nitrogen and phosphorus removal and for the optimization of sludge treatment including energy recovery. Apart from special features of construction and machinery a remarkable process control system is installed, which operates with several linked personal computers instead of a main frame process computer. At the beginning of the reconstruction tests were carried out in a semitechnical pilot plant. Results of these tests as well as first operation results of the large STP allow a good adjustment of the especially high quality standards to be expected.

Abstract:
A contract of 1392 between two Oxford brasiers, with an account of the ensuing dispute, provides important evidence for the organization of the medieval brasier's craft andfor technical aspects of his trade. One brasier employed another to make pots, bells and fawtys (probably faucets) for a flat payment by weight. The master-brasier provided the raw materials, comprising scrap brass on the one hand, and graycober (perhaps antimonial copper) and stelebake (probably zinc-bearing calamine ore so called from the place Stolberg) on the other. This, with newly discovered references to the importation of calamys and calamin in 1384, provides the first evidence yet found for the making of brass in England from its raw materials.

Abstract:
So far only very large sewage treatment plants (STP) are equipped with real process computers. High investment costs and complicated handling prevented their application in medium-sized and smaller STPs. Meanwhile Personal Computers became so efficient and reliable that they can be used for automatic control of industrial processes. In this paper the successful enlargement of the central STP of Stolberg-Steinfurt for 120,000 inhabitant equivalents is described. In the central facility seven linked personal computers co-operate in a local area network (LAN) for monitoring and optimization of different processes. They are connected with seven programmable controllers in outstations on site. The data transfer between the central control room and the outstations takes place using RS 232 C interfaces. Because of the use of common office computers in combination with industrially proved controllers the operators very soon accepted the system. After one year of operating experience they assess the system as a valuable tool.

[First paragraph]Plantation Economy, Land Reform and the Peasantry in a Historical Perspective: Jamaica 1838-1980. CLAUS STOLBERG & SWITHIN WILMOT(eds.)- Kingston: Friedrich Ebert Stiftung, 1992. 145 pp. (Paper n.p.)This interdisciplinary collection focuses on the integration of Jamaica's classical plantation economy with the world economy, and the impact of the plantation economy on the peasantry, land reform, and agrarian modemization in Jamaica from emancipation in 1838 up to 1980. The eight papers comprising the volume were, as a one-page editorial "Introduction" outlines, presented at a symposium at the University of the West Indies, Mona, and are dedicated to the late Professor George Beckford whose work on persistent poverty in plantation economies championed the Jamaican peasantry. As such, the book is a welcome addition to the literature on the Caribbean plantation-peasant interface. However, the chapters are uneven in quality, with some reflecting analytical weaknesses and a lack of historical depth. Typographical errors, grammatical mistakes, and poor documentation are also noticeable. In addition, contrasting perspectives emerge among the contributors and this is not addressed by the editors.

Abstract:
The University Library in Toruń was founded in 1945, along with the Nicolaus Copernicus University. In quite a short time, namely in the years 1945-1949, it gathered a large library collection of about 600 000 volumes of books, journals and special collection items. Thanks to Maria Strutyńska’s research, it is known that the Toruń collection of old prints gathered 418 library items in 844 volumes which were actually found in the palace library in Drogosze. These prints mainly include 18th century writings in French. This article analyses the manuscripts found in the Drogosze palace that are currently being held at the University Library in Toruń. It is a group of 16 in-ventory items in 24 volumes. One text regards the military and was written by Friedrich von Dönhoff (1639–1696), father of Bogusław Friedrich von Dönhoff, the builder of the Drogosze palace. All other items mainly consist of correspondence and journals of two generations of the Dönhoff family and one generation of the Stolberg-Wer-nigerode family.

Abstract:

Journal of Clinical Medicine 10, no. 11 (2021): 2232. http://dx.doi.org/10.3390/jcm10112232.

Full text
Abstract:
Large observational studies showed a U-shaped association of clinic blood pressure (BP) with mortality among patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD). Whether ambulatory BP provides a more direct risk signal in this population remains unknown. In a prospective cohort of 108 PD patients, standardized clinic BP was recorded at baseline with the validated device HEM-705 (Omron, Healthcare, Bannockburn, IL, USA) and 24-h ambulatory BP monitoring was performed using the Mobil-O-Graph monitor (IEM, Stolberg, Germany). Over a median follow-up of 16 months (interquartile range: 19 months), 47.2% of the overall population reached the composite outcome of non-fatal myocardial infarction, non-fatal stroke, or all-cause death. In Cox-regression analysis, systolic but not diastolic BP was prognostically informative. Compared with the reference quartile 1 of 24-h systolic BP (SBP), the multivariate-adjusted hazard ratio for the composite outcome was 1.098 (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.434–2.777) in quartile 2, 1.004 (95% CI: 0.382–2.235) in quartile 3 and 2.449 (95% CI: 1.156–5.190) in quartile 4. In contrast, no such association was observed between increasing quartiles of clinic SBP and composite outcome. The present study shows that among PD patients, increasing ambulatory SBP is independently associated with higher risk of adverse cardiovascular events and mortality, providing superior prognostic information than standardized clinic SBP.

Abstract:
This paper describes the experimental parameters involved in the femtosecond laser micromachining of biodegradable poly(L-lactide) which is frequently used in biomedical applications such as vascular stents or scaffolds. We investigated the influence of laser pulse energy, scanning strategy and number of overscans on the laser cutting throughput. The process parameters that enable reducing of a heat affected zone were determined. As a result, the optimal scanning strategy was determined in order to obtain high aspect ratio trenches in 380 ?m thick biodegradable polymer sheet. Full Text: PDF ReferencesW. Jia et al. Full text
Abstract:
Background: Neonatal extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) patients are particularly vulnerable to the effects of uncompensated insensible water loss resulting in hypernatraemia. There exists a long-standing relationship between hypernatraemia and varying degrees of cerebral dysfunction. The aim of this study is to explore the degree to which free water loss occurs across a commonly used ECMO oxygenator, the polymethylpentene (PMP) membrane Hilite® 2400LT (Medos, Medizintechnik AG, Stolberg, Germany). The secondary aim is to assess to what extent the addition of heat and/or humidity ameliorates this water loss. Methods: An ECMO circuit consisting of a centrifugal pump and a Hilite® 2400LT oxygenator was primed with crystalloid and albumin. Each experimental trial was carried out in triplicate, with gas flow rates of 1, 3 and 4.8 L/min being investigated. Fluid loss was assessed at six time points over a 24-hour period. Results: Water loss increased significantly from 1 to 3 L/min gas flow (p=0.05) and from 3 to 4.8 L/min gas flow (p=0.025). The mean water loss differences between the differing gas flow trials per L/min gas flow were non-significant (72.4 ±3.9 ml/24hrs). The effect of heating the gas to 37°C did not significantly alter water loss, whereas heat and humidity reduced water loss significantly (p=0.009). Conclusions: Insensible water loss from a Hilite® 2400LT oxygenator is approximately 72 ml/day per L/min gas flow over 24 hrs. Heating and humidifying the gas reduces the fluid loss significantly to approximately 8 ml/L/min gas flow over 24 hrs (p=0.009).

Abstract:
Background/Objective: Elevated pulse wave velocity (PWV) and central aortic blood pressures are independent predictors of increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in hemodialysis (HD) patients. Oxalic acid is a uremic retention molecule that is extensively studied in the pathogenesis of calcium oxalate stones. Oxalobacter formigenes, a member of the colon microbiota, has important roles in oxalate homeostasis. Data regarding the colonization by and the exact role of O. formigenes in the pathogenesis of oxalic acid metabolism in HD patients are scant. Hence, we aimed to determine the relationship between fecal O. formigenes colonization, serum oxalic acid and hemodynamic parameters in HD patients with regard to the colo-reno-cardiac axis. Methods: Fifty HD patients were enrolled in this study. PWV and central aortic systolic (cASBP) and diastolic blood pressures (cADBP) were measured with a Mobil-O-Graph (I.E.M. GmbH, Stolberg, Germany). Serum oxalic acid levels were assessed by ELISA, and fecal O. formigenes DNA levels were isolated and measured by real-time PCR. Results: Isolation of fecal O. formigenes was found in only 2 HD patients. One of them had 113,609 copies/ml, the other one had 1,056 copies/ml. Serum oxalic acid levels were found to be positively correlated with PWV (r = 0.29, p = 0.03), cASBP (r = 0.33, p = 0.001) and cADBP (r = 0.42, p = 0.002) and negatively correlated with LDL (r = -0.30, p = 0.03). In multivariate linear regression analysis, PWV was independently predicted by oxalic acid, glucose and triglyceride. Conclusions: This is the first study that demonstrates the absence of O. formigenes as well as a relation between serum oxalic acid and cASBP, cADBP and PWV in HD patients. Replacement of O. formigenes with pre- and probiotics might decrease serum oxalic acid levels and improve cardiovascular outcomes in HD patients.

Abstract:
Background. Central aortic blood pressure (CABP) indices, central hemodynamics, and arterial stiffness are better predictors of cardiovascular events as compared with brachial cuff pressure measurements alone. The present study is aimed at assessing the effects of different antihypertensive drug combination regimens involving renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) inhibitors on CABP indices in Indian patients with hypertension. Methods. This was a cross-sectional, single-center study conducted in patients treated for hypertension for >6 weeks using different treatment regimens involving the combination of RAAS inhibitors with drugs from other classes. CABP indices, vascular age, arterial stiffness, and central hemodynamics were measured in patients using the noninvasive Agedio B900 device (IEM, Stolberg, Germany) and compared between different treatment regimens. Results. A total of 199 patients with a mean age of 54.22±10.15 years were enrolled, where 68.8% had hypertension for over three years and 50.25% had their systolic blood pressure SBP<140 mmHg. Combination treatment with angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs) and angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs) was given to 77.9% and to 20.1% patients, respectively. The mean vascular age was higher than the actual age (58.13±12.43 vs. 54.22±10.15, p=0.001). The SBP and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) levels in patients treated with ACEI-based combinations were lower than those in patients treated with ARB-based combinations (p<0.05). The mean central pulse pressure amplification, augmentation pressure, and augmentation index were lower in patients treated with ACEI-based combinations than those treated with other treatments (p=0.001). In a subgroup analysis, patients given perindopril and calcium channel blockers (CCBs) or diuretics had significantly lower CABP and pulse wave velocity than those given other treatments (p<0.05). A total of 6.5% patients experienced any side effects. Conclusion. The majority of central hemodynamic parameters, including vascular age, were found to improve more effectively in patients treated with ACEIs than with ARBs. Our results indicate a gap between routine clinical practice and evidence-based guidelines in Indian settings and identify a need to reevaluate the current antihypertensive prescription strategy.

Abstract:
From a hybridoma cell line (2A10) producing an immunoglobulin G1 directed against the major membrane protein of the stolbur phytoplasma, we have engineered scFv (single-chain variable-fragment) antibodies from the variable heavy (VH) and light (VL) domains of the immunoglobulin. The scFv gene was cloned and expressed inEscherichia coli. The expressed protein of 30 kDa could be recovered from the periplasmic fraction of the bacterial cells and was shown to be fully functional toward its phytoplasmal antigen, since enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay or immunofluorescence (IF) detection of the stolbur phytoplasma antigen by the scFv was identical to that of the native immunoglobulin. The scFv gene was then cloned in plasmid pBG-dAb-BIN of Agrobacterium tumefaciens to transform tobacco plants. The transformed plants were screened by PCR and Northern blotting for the presence and expression of the transgene, respectively, and by IF for expression of the scFv. One transgenic tobacco line, 1A6, was selected for challenge inoculation with the stolbur phytoplasma. When grafted on a stolbur phytoplasma-infected tobacco rootstock, the transgenic tobacco shoots grew free of symptoms and flowered after 2 months, while normal tobacco shoots showed severe stolbur symptoms during the same period and eventually died.

Abstract:
In 2005, the first screening tests to confirm the presence of potato stolbur phytoplasma in hemipterans by the PCR method were carried out to determine the spectrum of possible vector species for further analyses. Potato stolbur phytoplasma was confirmed in two out of five tested individuals of Hyalesthes obsoletus and in one mixed sample (10 individuals) from 17 tested samples of Lygus spp. As far as we know this is the first occurrence of potato stolbur phytoplasma in Hyalesthes obsoletus and Lygus spp. confirmed by the PCR method in the Czech Republic.

Abstract:
During the late summer of 2007, a severe phytoplasma-like disease was observed for the first time in blackberry plants (Rubus fruticosus), commercial cv. Cacanska beztrna. Redness and downward rolling of leaves were symptoms observed in three localities in Central Serbia. The presence of Stolbur phytoplasma, belonging to the taxonomic subgroup 16SrXII-A, in diseased samples was confirmed by the PCR - RFLP analysis of 16S rDNA genes and elongation factor Tu (tuf) gene. A sequence analysis of the tuf gene confirmed homology with phytoplasmas stolbur tuf-type II detected previously in Italian grapevines and red clovers in the Czech Republic. This is the first report of Stolbur phytoplasma 16SrXII-A group tuf-type II on blackberries in Serbia.

Abstract:
Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum cv. Micro-Tom) plants infected by the stolbur phytoplasma (isolate PO) display floral abnormalities, including sepal hypertrophy, virescence, phyllody, and aborted reproductive organs, which are reminiscent of those observed in Arabidopsis thaliana mutants affected in flower development genes. Semiquantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and in situ RNA hybridization were used to compare expressions of meristem and flower development genes in healthy and stolbur phytoplasma-infected tomatoes. In infected plants, FALSIFLORA (FA), controlling the identity of the inflorescence meristem, was up-regulated, whereas LeWUSCHEL (LeWUS) and LeCLAVATA1 (LeCLV1), regulating the meristem development, and LeDEFICIENS (LeDEF), responsible for the organ (petals and stamens) identity within the flower, were down-regulated regardless of the development stage of the flower bud. In contrast, expression of TAG1, which regulates stamen and carpel identities and negatively controls LeWUS, was up-regulated at the early stages and down-regulated at the late stages. In situ RNA hybridization analyses revealed that TAG1 transcripts were restricted to the same floral meristem territories in healthy and infected tomatoes, indicating that tissue-specific expression of TAG1 was not affected by the stolbur phytoplasma infection. Taken together, these data indicate that flower malformations of stolbur phytoplasma-infected tomatoes are associated with early changes in the expression of key flower development genes. The possible mechanisms by which the multiplication of stolbur phytoplasma in tomato sieve tubes deregulates floral development are discussed.

Abstract:
Tomato and pepper are the main vegetable crops cultivated in Bulgaria. Phytoplasma diseases, mainly stolbur, are important plant diseases for these crops in Bulgaria. The goal of the present paper was to verify association of phytoplasmas with the observed disease symptoms in tomato and pepper and to identify the phytoplasmas detected using RFLP analysis of conserved genes and other uncharacterised phytoplasma chromosomal regions. The presence of phytoplasmas was confirmed in all the samples of tomato and pepper showing typical stolbur symptoms. A phytoplasm sample, which caused severe symptoms, showed the same pattern as the reference strain Mol, while all other phytoplasmic reference strains showed different polymorphisms. RFLP profiles were found useful in distinguishing phytoplasmas in stolbur subgroup (16SrXII-A) in natural plant hosts.

Abstract:
In January 2012, disease symptoms including chlorosis, leaf crinkle, leaf curving and stunting of whole plants, virescence, and curving and necrosis of flower stalks were observed in Freesia hybrida cvs. Evone, Honey Moon, Golden Gem, and Pallas in Icheon and Suwon (Gyeonggi Province in Korea). To determine a possible phytoplasma infection, the symptomatic freesia plants were examined for the presence of phytoplasma 16S rDNA fragment by PCR with the primer pair P1/P6 (2) and R16F1/R16R1 (in nested PCR), which amplifies phytoplasma 16S rDNA regions (4). An expected PCR product of ~1,096 bp was obtained from the symptomatic freesia plants, and they were designated as FreLN, Fre-phy-Ev4, Fre-phy-Ev6, Fre-phy-GG, Fre-phy-HM, and Fre-phy-Pal. The PCR products were sequenced and registered as GenkBank accessions AB695174 and AB709951-55. The sequence corresponding to symptomatic freesia had 98.8 to 99.4% identity with Stolbur phytoplasma strains in the 16S rDNA region, and it had only 95.7 to 96.3% identity with AY phytoplasma strains. In the ultra-thin sections of the leaf midribs, globous phytoplasmal bodies 54 to 214 nm in size were observed in sieve tube elements of phloem tissue. Fre-Phy-Ev6 and Fre-Phy-HM were doube-infected with Stolbur phytoplasma and Freesia mosaic virus (FreMV). Fre-Phy-Ev6 and Fre-Phy-HM revealed necrosis of flower stalks and flower color breaking besides curving of flower stalks. Therefore, flower color breaking and flower stalk necrosis were assumed to be caused by FreMV (1). Symptoms of chlorosis and stunting of whole plants shown in FreLN and virescence of Fre-phy-GG were typical symptoms of phytoplasmal diseases, while leaf crinkle, leaf curving, and curving of flower stalks appeared to be unique symptoms in F. hybrida. Stolbur phytoplasma was abundant in commercial freesia cultivation fields. Some of the cultivars, such as cv. Pallas, showed only curving of leaf and flower stalks without any typical symptom of phytoplasmal diseases. A phytoplasmal disease was reported in Poland in 2001 from F. hybrida exhibiting leaf chlorotic and necrotic spots, and classified as AY I-B based on RFLP analysis of PCR products (3). To our knowledge, this is the first report of Stolbur phytoplasma in F. hybrida. This result is significant because F. hybrida could be the infection source of Stolbur phytoplasma disease in floricultural crops. Interestingly, we found a prevalence of Stolbur phytoplasma in Petunia hybrida cultivars (GenBank Accession Nos. AB713757 to AB713758). High nucleotide sequence identity of 99.8% in the 16S rDNA region of Stolbur phytoplasma isolates from petunia and freesia support the inference that those Stolbur phytoplasma isolates could infect both floricultural crops.
