This study examined why theft of petrified wood at Petrified Forest National Park occurred and how designed interventions worked to inhibit the performance of that behavior. This evaluation was based on semi-structured interviews with observed thieves and non-thieves. Subjective responses revealed that theft was not a thoughtless act, but instead occurred because thieves rationalized that their particular act of theft was acceptable. The primary rationalization given by thieves was that their piece of stolen wood was so small that taking it would not hurt anything. It appeared as though anti-t

In year 2013, I lived in Vietnam. Once a year, the Vietnamese people have a particular tradition called khom đất, where the people set out a guest table filled with delicious feast of food and paper clothing, shoes, accessories and money for the spirits of the house. Khom in khom đất means a set of rituals or prayer to bow down and pay respect. Đất means land. It is a ritual which acknowledges the spirits within the home and the agency these spirits have to the home. There would be separate rituals for different types of spirits and incense would burn as an offering to various places. For exam

Abstract How to depose an absolute ruler and constitute law anew? This question is about lawmaking in the face of the apocalyptic. I suggest a framework of analysis that puts the oath at its centre and understands it as a technique by which the authors of a coup leave a violent, non-constituted space and vouchsafe themselves personally to a new order. A few weeks in advance of the 20 July 1944 attempt at Hitler’s life, Berthold and Claus von Stauffenberg formulated an oath, addressed to the innermost circle of conspirators – and the brothers themselves. I argue that the poiesis of an oath of t

From its very title, the story "keeps the materiality of the missing object at the heart of the narrative" (Camps-Robertson 156). This dish is the one that “Pop” had stolen decades earlier from the Christian missionary family who had taken Woody in, hoping to make him a seminarian, thus compromising his son's relationship with his protectors and leading to his expulsion. AbstractThe power word problem for a group $$\varvec{G}$$ G asks whether an expression $$\varvec{u_1^{x_1} \cdots u_n^{x_n}}$$ u 1 x 1 ⋯ u n x n , where the $$\varvec{u_i}$$ u i are words over a finite set of generators of $$\varvec{G}$$ G and the $$\varvec{x_i}$$ x i binary encoded integers, is equal to the identity of $$\varvec{G}$$ G . It is a restriction of the compressed word problem, where the input word is represented by a straight-line program (i.e., an algebraic circuit over $$\varvec{G}$$ G ). We start by showing some easy results concerning the power word problem. In particular, the

We conducted a systematic literature search and meta-analysis of studies with side-by-side life cycle analysis comparisons of mid-rise buildings using mass timber and conventional, concrete and steel, building materials. Based on 18 comparisons across four continents, we found that substituting conventional building materials for mass timber reduces construction phase emissions by 69%, an average reduction of 216 kgCO2e/m2 of floor area. Studies included in our analysis were unanimous in showing emissions reductions when building with mass timber compared to conventional materials. Scaling-up

One of the concepts is that the unit does not require qualified personnel for its operation. The unit itself is composed of two main parts. The design requires a heat producing stove and electricity producing thermoelectric generator. After the construction the unit was tested and the results show that the emission release is within the legislative requirements for emission production and environmental protection. Although buildings produce a third of greenhouse gas emissions, it has been suggested that they might be one of the most cost-effective climate change mitigation solutions. Among building materials, wood not only produces fewer emissions according to life-cycle assessment but can also store carbon. This study aims to estimate the carbon storage potential of new European buildings between 2020 and 2040. While studies on this issue exist, they mainly present rough estimations or are based on a small number of case studies. To ensure a reliable estimation, 50 different case buildings were selecte

Among the inevitable by-products of the metallurgical industry, special importance is given to waste from the iron and steel production. The blast furnace slag is not only the by-product, but rather it is also of a valuable resource as a substitute for the natural mineral aggregates. The chemical composition of blast furnace slag is similar to the composition of natural mineral rocks and is recognized as a potential raw material in stone wool production. In addition, the static coefficient of friction and rolling resistance for tubers on five surface materials were determined.
