Abstract:
Three major methods are used to produce crumb rubber modified asphalt pavement: the dry process (CRDry), the terminal blend process (CRTB), and the wet process (CRWet). Although the CRDry process replaces the portion of fine aggregate in the asphalt mixture with crumb rubber (CR) particles, the CRWet process incorporates CR particles into hot liquid asphalt before it is mixed with aggregates. CRTB is known as a special type of CRWet process in which the CR is blended with asphalt binder at the asphalt terminal. In general, the CRWet process can integrate 15% to 22% CR by weight of the binder.

Abstract:
Using asphalt mixtures with added materials became a significant field for enhancing asphalt properties. Crumb rubber or recycled tire rubber is one of these materials that gained great attention because it provides asphalt mixtures with enhanced properties and with the privilege of being economically and environmentally efficient where it reduces the waste tires from being disposed to nature. This study explores the latest articles in this field with a focus on different methods used to incorporate crumb rubber (CR) into the asphalt matrix. It has been noticed that most articles focus on the

Abstract:
The usage of Ground Tire Rubber (GTR) in asphalt pavements has gained renewed interest due to its potential sustainability, economic, and performance benefits. This study focuses on asphalt mixtures designed with three different rubber modifier products including (1) a terminal-blend GTR, (2) a dry-process, chemically processed rubber product, and (3) a terminal-blend rubber-polymer hybrid product. The modifications were incorporated into Illinois Tollway’s approved Stone Matrix Asphalt (SMA) designs using (1) a base binder (PG 58-28), (2) a softer binder (PG 46-34), and (3) a softer binder wi

Abstract:
Acid erosion can accelerate the process of early damage of asphalt pavement and decrease the durability of asphalt pavement. However, there are limited research results for asphalt mixtures that can resist acid rain erosion. To systematically evaluate the impact and action law of acid rain erosion on the durability of asphalt mixtures, three gradation schemes were used: periodic dry–wet cycle immersion test, contact angle test and road performance test. The acid rain erosion resistance of epoxy asphalt mixture, SBS-modified asphalt mixture and 70# matrix asphalt mixture were tested from three

The study investigated the fatigue performance of rubberized stone matrix asphalt (SMA) in the dry process and compared its fatigue characterization with SMAs with other typical binders. Five SMA mixtures were used with the following asphalt binders: (1) virgin asphalt of PG 67-22, (2) crumb rubber modifier (CRM) modified in wet process, (3) CRM modified in dry process, (4) terminal-blend binder, and (5) styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) modified binder. Dynamic modulus and direct-tension fatigue tests were performed using the asphalt mixture performance tester (AMPT) system. In addition, improv

The study investigated the dynamic modulus, rutting resistance, moisture susceptibility and fatigue resistance of rubberized Stone Matrix Asphalt (SMA) through laboratory performance tests. Rubberized SMA mixes were produced by three processes: the dry process, the wet process and the terminal in the laboratory. For comparison purposes, SMA mixtures containing styrene–butadiene–styrene (SBS) modified binder and virgin asphalt of PG 67-22 were also evaluated and compared to rubberized SMA. Dynamic modulus and direct tension fatigue tests were performed using the Asphalt Mixture Performance Test

Abstract:
Crumb rubber, made from scrap tires, has been introduced into the production of different types of Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) in either wet or dry process. In the wet process, the crumb rubber and binder are completely mixed to form Asphalt Rubber (AR), which is then mixed with aggregates in a drum. In the dry process, the crumb rubber is mixed directly with aggregates in the drum to produce an HMA called Rubberized Asphalt Mix. In this paper, the long-term performance of 3-year in service testing pavement of Stone Matrix Asphalt (SMA) pavements with crumb rubber added in dry process was examined t

The study investigated the fatigue performance of rubberized porous European mix (PEM) and control PEM and the influence introducing methods of crumb rubber modifier (CRM) on the fatigue performance of PEM. Four PEM mixtures were used: rubberized PEM in dry process, rubberized PEM in wet process, rubberized PEM with terminal blend binder, and control styrene–butadiene–styrene (SBS) modified PEM. Dynamic modulus and direct tension fatigue tests were performed with an asphalt mixture performance tester system.
