Abstract:
We describe a new genus of cynipid oak gallwasp, Protobalandricus Melika, Nicholls & Stone (Hymenoptera: Cynipidae: Cynipini). Protobalandricus gen. nov. includes one previously described species, Disholcaspis spectabilis (Kinsey), which induces stem swelling-like galls on golden cup oaks, Quercus section Protobalanus. Descriptions of the genus and diagnostic characters, including DNA sequence data, are presented.

One of the remarkable aspects of the tremendous biodiversity found in tropical forests is the wide range of evolutionary strategies that have produced this diversity, indicating many paths to diversification. We compare two diverse groups of trees with profoundly different biologies to discover whether these differences are reflected in their genomes. Many of these forests are threatened by climate change-induced drought, especially in marginal habitats and at the dry edge of their distribution. Livestock grazing is widespread in drylands, but research on the impact of grazing focuses mainly on the herbaceous vegetation and much less is known on the consequences for woody vegetation, including trees. Abstract Lithocarpus or stone oaks (Fagaceae) are ecologically and economically important trees in tropical and subtropical Asia as animal food sources, valuable timber trees, and natural bioactive components. Nonetheless, it was often challenging to identify Lithocarpus at the species level. Using a short sequence of specific regions in the genome, DNA barcoding offers a fast and cost-effective way to catalogue biodiversity and protect endangered species from illegal trades. However, universal barcodes were reported as not always applicable to all plant species. Thus, specific barcodes have b

Each tree was paired with a basalt stele which was quarried locally. In Beuys’s conception, the installation would change its character over time. For the first few years the standing stones would be the dominant feature, but they would become less conspicuous as the oaks grew to maturity. After that, there might be two very different outcomes.
