Abstract:
Ochre is found at many Middle Stone Age (MSA) sites and its use is often attributed by archaeologists to enhanced mental abilities and symbolism. However, the links between the visible uses of ochre, cognition and symbolism have not been clearly demonstrated. Here it is argued that by understanding ochre processing technology and some of the stages involved in using ochre, one can determine the skill, knowledge and cognitive abilities required to execute those activities. In order to understand the usetraces found on ochre, and to enable the identification of them, as well as the types o

abstract: The South African Middle Stone Age (MSA), spanning the Middle to Late Pleistocene (Marine Isotope Stages (MIS) 8-3) witnessed major climatic and environmental change and dramatic change in forager technological organization including lithic raw material selection. Homo sapiens emerged during the MSA and had to make decisions about how to organize technology to cope with environmental stressors, including lithic raw material selection, which can effect tool production and application, and mobility. This project studied the role and importance of lithic raw materials in the technolog

Abstract:
The need to expand the current lithic Plio-Pleistocene assemblages at Sterkfontein and to understand how these assemblages have been incorporated into the cave deposits is of key importance to archaeological research on the Oldowan and Early Acheulean of South Africa. The greater the archaeological sample size the more accurately inferences can be made regarding the behaviour and technological practices of local hominid groups. An accurate understanding of depositional processes influencing these assemblages allows inferences to be made regarding the post-depositional movement of elements with

Abstract:
Results and analysis of Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) dating of the Middle Stone Age (MSA) and Later Stone Age (LSA) sediments at Rose Cottage Cave (RCC) are presented. Seventeen luminescence samples taken over the last decade were used in this study. Fourteen of these samples were dated (eight in Pretoria and six in Risø, Denmark by A. S. Murray). The samples were taken from the entire sequence and gave age ranges from the bottom of the sequence up until the Oakhurst LSA industry. The protocol that was used is the conventional single-aliquot regenerative (SAR) protocol, due to its a
