Abstract:
We describe a new field procedure for stop-go temperature logging of boreholes that attains millikelvin precision. Temperature is recorded continuously throughout the entire log, but the logging probe is held stationary for a fixed time at discrete depth intervals. Equilibrium temperatures at the discrete depths are based on extrapolations of time series using the heat-diffusion theory for an infinitely long cylinder. For a Fenwahl K212E thermistor probe having a time constant of about [Formula: see text], temperatures are still [Formula: see text] away from equilibrium after a wait time of [Formula: see text]; but temperatures extrapolated from the time series are within [Formula: see text] of equilibrium. A time series over a duration of seven time constants of the probe allows the user to reproduce temperature estimates within millikelvins. The technique was applied at GC-1, a borehole in northwestern Utah.

Abstract:
The paper treats the problem of crash-stop manoeuver which is of great importance for vessels navigating at restricted and overcrowded inland waterways. A brief review of existing international regulations covering stopping process on inland waterways is given. Three characteristic phases of crash-stop manoeuver for a typical Danube pushboat are described and a simplified calculation procedure is propsed for estimation of stopping distance and stopping time period for a vessel. A propeller's reverse thrust prediction during crash-stop manoeuver was determined according to results of W.B. series 4 quadrant open water testing. Simple emperical formulas for calculation of propeller's reverse thrust are given either for conventional W.B. series propeller and propeller series KA operating in nozzle type 19A. At the end, some concluding remarks are given on how to influence the stopping abilities of a vessel in design phase. The accuracy of proposed calculation procedure is illustrated through comparison to results of crash-stop trial testing for a pushed concoy and a cargo ship.

Abstract:
We argue that the common phonological assumptions that (i) plain voiceless consonants are less marked than voiceless aspirates and (ii) the unmarked two-way stop system opposes unaspirated voiced and voiceless members are incorrect. A wide range of phonetic and internal and external phonological evidence suggests instead that (i) the maximally unmarked single-series stop is unspecified for laryngeal features and (ii) the unmarked two-way stop system opposes aspirated and unaspirated stops, and the aspirated series may be the unmarked member of this set.

Abstract:
The Stop Signal Reaction Time (SSRT) is a latency measurement for the unobservable human brain stopping process, and was formulated by Logan (1994) without consideration of the nature (go/stop) of trials that precede the stop trials. Two asymptotically equivalent and larger indices of mixture SSRT and weighted SSRT were proposed in 2017 to address this issue from time in task longitudinal perspective, but estimation based on the time series perspective has still been missing in the literature. A time series-based state space estimation of SSRT was presented and it was compared with Logan 1994 SSRT over two samples of real Stop Signal Task (SST) data and the simulated SST data. The results showed that time series-based SSRT is significantly larger than Logan’s 1994 SSRT consistent with former Longitudinal-based findings. As a conclusion, SSRT indices considering the after effects of inhibition in their estimation process are larger yielding to hypothesize a larger estimates of SSRT using information on the reactive inhibition, proactive inhibition and their interplay in the SST data.

Full text
Abstract:
The article discusses and analyzes the reasons for reducing the operational life of a body suspension unit - the stop-limiter for horizontal movements of a bogie frame, currently used in the design of the mechanical part of most locomotives of the new series. It is demonstrated that during operation, the change in the regulated technological parameters of the stop-limiter occurs at a relatively low mileage of the locomotive, and the current repair technology does not provide for its prompt replacement due to design features. Based on the analysis of the mechanical properties of the materials used, the stress-strain state of a stop pin model was obtained when interacting with a thrust plate. The results of the calculation of the strength of the stop presented in the article show the predominance of plastic deformations in the contact spot with the thrust plate, which justifies the need to use materials with a higher yield strength to achieve a minimum safety factor. In this article, the possibility of improving the performance of the stop-limiter for horizontal movements of the bogie by improving its design and using materials with a higher yield strength is proposed and considered, its operation is described and the main advantages over its analogue are summarized, conclusions are drawn about the need to change the design in the conditions of a service locomotive repair depot.

Abstract:
This article dealt with estimating and analyzing the reliability function for hybrid systems. The hybrid sys-tems included series-parallel and parallel-series with symmetric components representing the machine's op-eration times; these times follow a generalized exponential distribution. Furthermore, we suggested employ-ing a hybrid system parallel series in the application part of this research, which includes the operation times of Baghdad's Vegetable Oil factory machines. The results of the reliability function for the factory system indicate that the probability that the factory machines will stop during the first hour is more than 40%. Still, if the hybrid parallel-series system is applied, the probability that the factory operating system will not stop during the second hour becomes 80%.

Abstract:
All-way or multiway stop signs are perhaps the most controversial form of residential traffic control. Because stop signs are thought of as a panacea for many traffic problems, residents are likely to request all-way stop signs more frequently than any other form of control. The Virginia Department of Transportation receives requests to install all-way stop control (AWSC) on residential streets primarily to slow traffic and to reduce cut-through traffic volumes. The effectiveness of AWSC as a residential traffic management technique is evaluated. A comprehensive review of the literature and a questionnaire survey of selected traffic engineering agencies revealed how AWSC is used in Virginia and elsewhere. Most traffic engineering agencies use AWSC warrants from FHWA’s Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). Some agencies modify the MUTCD warrants or use a rating system because the MUTCD warrants appear to be in appropriate for residential streets with lower traffic volumes. Three case studies using a series of AWSC intersections to reduce cut-through traffic on residential streets were conducted and analyzed. In these studies, AWSC when installed at a series of residential intersections effectively reduced cut-through volumes.

Abstract:
While Mixtec languages are well-known for their tonal systems, there remains relatively little work focusing on their consonant inventories. This paper provides an in-depth phonetic description of the consonant system of the Yoloxóchitl Mixtec language (Oto-Manguean, ISO 639-3 code xty), a Guerrero Mixtec variety. The language possesses a number of contrasts common among Mixtec languages, such as voiceless unaspirated stops, prenasalized stops, and a strong tendency for words to conform to a minimally bimoraic structure. Using a controlled set of data, we focus on how word size and word position influence the acoustic properties of different consonant types. We examine closure duration, VOT, and formant transitions with the stop series, spectral moments with the fricative series, the timing between oral and nasal closure with the prenasalized stop series, and both formant transitions and qualitative variability with the glide series. The general effect of word size is discussed in relation to work on polysyllabic shortening (Turk &amp; Shattuck-Hufnagel 2000) and demonstrates the importance of prosodic templates in Mixtec languages (Macken &amp; Salmons 1997). The prenasalized stop data provides evidence that such stops are best analyzed as allophones of nasal consonants preceding oral vowels (as per Marlett 1992) and not as hypervoiced variants of voiced stops (as per Iverson &amp; Salmons 1996).

Abstract:
Visual-preference surveys are becoming popular in “visioning” projects, design charrettes, and other physical planning activities in which intensive public involvement is desired. In a survey, transit users, nonusers, and professionals were shown a series of paired slides of bus stops, asked to choose the stop from each pair at which they would prefer to wait, and asked to rate each stop chosen as a place to wait. Slides then were analyzed for content, with 19 features of bus stops and surroundings measured and quantified. Subsequent analysis showed that transit-oriented design features most affecting both choices and ratings are a bus shelter at the stop, trees along the street leading to the stop, a vertical curb at the stop, the setback of the stop from the street edge, and a continuous sidewalk leading to the stop. Such a survey may help transit planners choose the best transit-stop locations and devote financial resources to the most promising transit-stop amenities, given the inevitable trade-offs involved.

Abstract:
We sought to determine whether tubuloglomerular feedback (TGF), activated from one nephron, affects other arterioles derived from the same cortical radial artery. Surface nephrons supplied by a single cortical radial artery were identified by injecting Ringer solution containing Fast Green from a narrow-gauge polyethylene catheter inserted via a lumbar artery into a renal artery. Stop-flow pressure was measured in an identified nephron from such a grouping. In one series, increasing end-proximal flow rate from 0 to 50 nl/min of synthetic tubular fluid in one member of an identified pair of nephrons reduced stop-flow pressure by 1.3 +/- 0.2 mmHg in the other member. When the nephrons were derived from different cortical radial arteries, the stop-flow pressure changed -0.2 +/- 0.1 mmHg. In another series, increasing flow in the adjacent nephron from 0 to 50 nl/min decreased stop-flow pressure 3.9 +/- 0.9 mmHg, and increasing flow in the adjacent nephron by the same amount when flow in the first nephron was 50 nl/min decreased stop-flow pressure 3.4 +/- 0.7 mmHg. These results indicate the operation of an interaction among nephrons derived from a common cortical radial artery. Such an interaction could produce a cooperative effect larger than that predicted from measured single-nephron responses when systemic arterial pressure changes.

Abstract:
Purpose – Wiki is a new form of information production and organization, which has become one of the most important knowledge resources. In recent years, with the increase of users in wikis, “free rider problem” has been serious. In order to motivate editors to contribute more to a wiki system, it is important to fully understand their contribution behavior. The purpose of this paper is to explore the law of dynamic contribution behavior of editors in wikis. Design/methodology/approach – After developing a dynamic model of contribution behavior, the authors employed both the metrological and clustering methods to process the time series data. The experimental data were collected from Baidu Baike, a renowned Chinese wiki system similar to Wikipedia. Findings – There are four categories of editors: “testers,” “dropouts,” “delayers” and “stickers.” Testers, who contribute the least content and stop contributing rapidly after editing a few articles. After editing a large amount of content, dropouts stop contributing completely. Delayers are the editors who do not stop contributing during the observation time, but they may stop contributing in the near future. Stickers, who keep contributing and edit the most content, are the core editors. In addition, there are significant time-of-day and holiday effects on the number of editors’ contributions. Originality/value – By using the method of time series analysis, some new characteristics of editors and editor types were found. Compared with the former studies, this research also had a larger sample. Therefore, the results are more scientific and representative and can help managers to better optimize the wiki systems and formulate incentive strategies for editors.

Abstract:
Abstract. The purpose of this study was to examine acoustically the developmental characteristics of Korean stops. Stop productions were obtained from 30 Korean male and female children in two age ranges (5 and 10 years). Voice-Onset-Time (VOT) delay and fundamental frequency (f 0) at the onset of vowel were measured for sequences of word-initial stop followed by the vowel /a/. These were analysed as a function of age, sex, place of articulation and stop manner category. Measure-ments of f 0 were also made at the middle of the vowel /i/ in order to compare with vowel-onset f 0. Results revealed that VOT values were not significantly different in terms of age, but did differ by sex in that boys produced significantly longer VOT lag than girls in the aspirated stop series. In addition, VOT varied by stop category and place of articulation. Vowel-onset f 0 differed between sexes as well as by stop manner category, but vowel-middle f 0 was not significantly different be-tween sexes. As expected, both vowel-onset and vowel-middle f 0 were higher in 5 year-old children than in 10 year-old children. The results of this study indicate that, overall, differences which corre-late with sex and age are more prominent for laryngeal tension distinctions than for temporal coordi-nation gestures in Korean children, suggesting that sex and age differences in stop consonants during the pre-adolescent period should be examined across languages.

Although digital media literacy is recognized as the essential competencies required for living in a new media age, it just starts to gain focus in Taiwan's elementary education. One of the reasons is examination-oriented education, with the result that diverts scarce resources away from this informal learning. The other reason is that educators tend to think digital media education as a series of purely technical operation, which might lead student digital media learning to mindless work. Therefore, this study designed a media exhibition based on Kolb's experiential learning model for teaching students concepts of stop-motion films and techniques of film production. A design experiment involved 247 third-grade elementary students that were grouped to visit the experiential exhibition. The findings suggest that the students have improved their knowledge of stop-motion films. Analysis of these produced films also shows that they have improved their media ability to represent their ideas and communicate with others. Through the analysis of the influence of demographics on the knowledge test, the findings revealed that the experiential exhibition is more effective for female elementary students and students' relevant previous experiences may not affect their acquired knowledge. Given those results and observations, we believe that the proposed experiential exhibition is a promising way to carry out digital media literacy education in elementary schools.Although digital media literacy is recognized as the essential competencies required for living in a new media age, it just starts to gain focus in Taiwan's elementary education.

<strong>Abstract</strong> Understanding Longitudinal traffic dynamics helps highway operators to effectively manage traffic flow under various situations. This study particularly focuses on the changes in lane flow distribution due to the combined effect of a bus stop and an exit point. Depending on a bus stop location in the upstream or downstream of an exit, two cases are investigated. A series of models is developed to analyze the relationship between lane flow distribution and traffic density, bus arrival rate, diverging volume. The models could also predict lane flow distributions of individual lanes that can be used to monitor traffic flow conditions under proposed traffic control strategies. The results of study can be applied to traffic control optimization at locations near bus stops and exit points on urban express ways.

Abstract:
Background: Automatic discontinuation of antimicrobial orders after a prespecified duration of therapy has been adopted as a strategy for reducing excess days of therapy (DOT) as part of antimicrobial stewardship efforts. Automatic stop orders have been shown to decrease antimicrobial DOT. However, inadvertent treatment interruptions may occur as a result, potentially contributing to adverse patient outcomes. To evaluate the effects of this practice, we examined the impact of the removal of an electronic 7-day ASO program on hospitalized patients. Methods: We performed a quasi-experimental study on inpatients in 3 acute-care academic hospitals. In the preintervention period (automatic stop orders present; January 1, 2016, to February 28, 2017), we had an electronic dashboard to identify and intervene on unintentionally missed doses. In the postintervention period (April 1, 2017, to March 31, 2018), the automatic stop orders were removed. We compared the primary outcome, DOT per 1,000 patient days (PD) per month, for patients in the automatic stop orders present and absent periods. The Wilcoxon rank-sum test was used to compare median monthly DOT/1,000 PD. Interrupted time series analysis (Prais-Winsten model) was used to compared trends in antibiotic DOT/1,000 PD and the immediate impact of the automatic stop order removal. Manual chart review on a subset of 300 patients, equally divided between the 2 periods, was performed to assess for unintentionally missed doses. Results: In the automatic stop order period, a monthly median of 644.5 antibiotic DOT/1,000 PD were administered, compared to 686.2 DOT/1,000 PD in the period without automatic stop orders (P &lt; .001) (Fig. 1). Using interrupted time series analysis, there was a nonsignificant increase by 46.7 DOT/1,000 PD (95% CI, 40.8 to 134.3) in the month immediately following removal of automatic stop orders (P = .28) (Fig. 2). Even though the slope representing monthly change in DOT/1,000 PD increased in the period without automatic stop orders compared to the period with automatic stop orders, it was not statistically significant (P = .41). Manual chart abstraction revealed that in the period with automatic stop orders, 9 of 150 patients had 17 unintentionally missed days of therapy, whereas none (of 150 patients) in the period without automatic stop orders did. Conclusions: Following removal of the automatic stop orders, there was an overall increase in antibiotic use, although the change in monthly trend of antibiotic use was not significantly different. Even with a dashboard to identify missed doses, there was still a risk of unintentionally missed doses in the period with automatic stop orders. Therefore, this risk should be weighed against the modest difference in antibiotic utilization garnered from automatic stop orders.Funding: NoneDisclosures: None

In this article we will first highlight Cauchy's contribution to divergent series: a contribution of fundamental importance for mathematics scholars of all time and then stop at the concept as an incomplete result of Cauchy with respect to the hypotheses relating to the continuity of the sum of a series of functions. Although he was not the only seller, this erroneous result remained famous. It is referred to as Cauchy's incomplete theorem.

Abstract:
The digital economy in Indonesia is growing rapidly, including in online lending services. Application X is one of the popular online lending applications, offering users convenience in applying for loans online. This research employs sentiment analysis on user reviews of Application X to understand their preferences and needs. The K-Nearest Neighbours (K-NN) method is applied as the primary algorithm for sentiment classification. Data collected through user review scraping undergoes a series of preprocessing stages, such as tokenization, stop word removal, and stemming, aimed at improving data quality. The K-NN model is tested in various scenarios to achieve the best results. The best scenario reveals that the highest accuracy is achieved by the K-NN model when the stop word removal process is not applied during the data preprocessing stage where the accuracy without using the stop word process was 92.9%, compared to 89.9% when using stop words.

Abstract:
Objectives. To examine the impact of North Carolina’s 2017 Strengthening Opioid Misuse Prevention (STOP) Act on opioid overdose deaths. Methods. We used quarterly data from the North Carolina Opioid Dashboard to conduct an interrupted time series analysis ranging from 2010 to 2018. Results were stratified by heroin–fentanyl deaths and other opioid deaths. Results. After the STOP Act, there was an initial rate increase of 0.60 opioid deaths per 100 000 population (95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.04, 1.15) and a decrease of 0.42 (95% CI = −0.56, −0.29) every quarter thereafter. Results differed by stratification. Conclusions. Our results suggest that North Carolina’s STOP Act was associated with a reduction in opioid deaths in the year following enactment. The changes in opioid overdose death trends coinciding with the STOP Act were similar to outcomes seen with previous opioid policies. Public Health Implications. Future policies designed to reduce the availability of opioids may benefit from encouraging and increasing the availability of evidence-based treatment of opioid use disorder.

Abstract:
As part of a stellar population sampling program, a series of photometric probes at various field sizes and depths have been obtained in a low extinction window in the galactic anticentre direction. Very deep CCD frames probe the most external parts of the disc, providing strong evidence that the galactic density scale length for the old disc population is rather short (2.5 kpc) and drops abruptly beyond 5.5-6 kpc.Deeper frames in the I band allow to estimate photometric distances and confirm the position of the disk edge. A few stars are found at larger distances. Their number is exactly what we expect if the thick disk does not have any cutoff. We discuss the implications for the formation and evolution of the disc, for the star formation threshold, and for the origin of the thick disc population.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTIn Basque, there is evidence, especially in early loans from Latin, that a sequence #DV(R)T… where D is a voiced stop and T is a voiceless (aspirated) stop was optionally produced with devoicing of the first of these stops. An additional particularity of this sound pattern is that the devoiced word-initial stop typically surfaces with aspiration, while the previously aspirated stop loses it: #DV(R)T(h)… &gt; #T(h)V(R)T… This typologically uncommon sound pattern has been described as assimilation of voicelessness in the literature, or spread of [-voiced]. I propose that this sound pattern is triggered by aspiration, not voicelessness, and that it is a case of metathesis, not assimilation. Under the proposed analysis, aspiration of the second stop in the word is reanalysed as originating in the first stop, an instance of perceptual metathesis. This approach accounts for the distribution of aspirated stops before and after the optional change, and the failure of post-sibilant stops to trigger. This account also has implications for the chronology of aspiration-loss in Western dialects: at the time the earliest Latin loans were borrowed, all Basque dialects still maintained a historical series of aspirated stops. Only later, after this process of optional metathesis, did the Western dialects lose *h and stop aspiration.

Purpose This paper aims to propose a new topology of direct current (DC) machine using claw-pole stator to replace standard DC starter in micro-hybrid vehicles. The main interest of such a topology is the reduction of copper volume. Design/methodology/approach The design of the claw-pole machine is based on a multi-objective optimization of several topologies, based on a three-dimensional (3D) reluctance network modeling. The 3D finite element (FE) model is used to check the results of the optimization, and a prototype is manufactured and tested with satisfactory results. Findings The claw-pole topology with wave-shape windings allows to replace the current DC series classical starter because of to its copper volume saving. Research limitations/implications This model is only limited to the optimization of the claw-pole stator for a fixed geometry of the rotor. Practical implications The research outcome shows that claw-pole machine can replace the series-excited DC machines of starters and at the same time achieve the same performance at reduced copper volume. Originality/value The paper deals with a new DC machine topology to reduce the copper volume through the suppression of the classical stator end-windings. The use of Claw-Pole inductors ensures this copper reduction.

Abstract:
Stop motion is an animation technique that consists of creating the illusion of movement by capturing a series of still images, in which each frame represents a small advance in movement. This technique has been increasingly explored as a pedagogical tool in early childhood education, providing a playful and interactive experience for children. For that purpose, the specific objectives were addressed: Understanding and identifying the knowledge, interest and use of digital technologies in early childhood education; Evaluate how the training process and the proposed actions contributed to the legitimization of creative methodologies and the use of animation cinema to enhance teaching and learning. Didactic Sequences were prepared for teacher training. The methodology was based on bibliographical research. The interpretation of the data showed the lack of training in digital technologies and made it possible to verify how in-service training can be efficient in solving the existing gaps in teacher training in technologies. In summary, the use of stop motion as a pedagogical tool in early childhood education benefits both children and teachers. It provides a differentiated educational experience, promoting the integral development of children and expanding teaching and learning possibilities in the classroom.

Abstract:
Background The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) outbreak may motivate smokers to attempt to stop in greater numbers. However, given the temporary closure of UK stop smoking services and vape shops, smokers attempting to quit may instead seek out mobile health support, such as smartphone apps. Objective We examined, using an interrupted time series approach, whether the SARS-CoV-2 outbreak has been associated with a step change or increasing trend in UK downloads of an otherwise popular smoking cessation app, Smoke Free. Methods Data were from daily and nondaily adult smokers in the United Kingdom who had downloaded the Smoke Free app between January 1, 2020, and March 31, 2020 (primary analysis), and January 1, 2019, and March 31, 2020 (secondary analysis). The outcome variable was the number of downloads aggregated at the 12-hourly (primary analysis) or daily level (secondary analysis). The explanatory variable was the start of the SARS-CoV-2 outbreak, operationalized as March 1, 2020 (primary analysis), and January 15, 2020 (secondary analysis). Generalized additive mixed models adjusted for relevant covariates were fitted. Results Data were collected on 45,105 (primary analysis) and 119,881 (secondary analysis) users. In both analyses, there was no evidence for a step change or increasing trend in downloads attributable to the start of the SARS-CoV-2 outbreak. Calculation of Bayes factors (BFs) indicated that the data for the primary analysis favored the null hypothesis compared with large associations (for level, BF=0.25; for slope, BF=0.26) but were insensitive to the detection of small associations (for level, BF=0.78; for slope, BF=1.35). Conclusions In the United Kingdom, between January 1, 2020, and March 31, 2020, and between January 1, 2019, and March 31, 2020, there was no evidence that the SARS-CoV-2 outbreak has been associated with a large step change or increasing trend in downloads of a popular smoking cessation app. Findings on the association of the SARS-CoV-2 outbreak with a small step change or increasing trend were inconclusive.

Abstract:
Abstract The Schrödinger equation with pseudo-Gaussian potential is investigated. The pseudo-Gaussian potential can be written as an infinite power series. Technically, by an ansatz to the wave-functions, exact solutions can be found by analytic approach [12]. However, to calculate the solutions for each state, a condition that will stop the series has to be introduced. In this way the calculated energy values may suffer modifications by imposing the convergence of series. Our presentation, based on numerical methods, is to compare the results with those obtained in the analytic case and to determine if the results are stable under different stopping conditions.

Abstract:
Spiking neural networks (SNNs) are recurrent models that can leverage sparsity in input time series to efficiently carry out tasks such as classification. Additional efficiency gains can be obtained if decisions are taken as early as possible as a function of the complexity of the input time series. The decision on when to stop inference and produce a decision must rely on an estimate of the current accuracy of the decision. Prior work demonstrated the use of conformal prediction (CP) as a principled way to quantify uncertainty and support adaptive-latency decisions in SNNs. In this paper, we propose to enhance the uncertainty quantification capabilities of SNNs by implementing ensemble models for the purpose of improving the reliability of stopping decisions. Intuitively, an ensemble of multiple models can decide when to stop more reliably by selecting times at which most models agree that the current accuracy level is sufficient. The proposed method relies on different forms of information pooling from ensemble models and offers theoretical reliability guarantees. We specifically show that variational inference-based ensembles with p-variable pooling significantly reduce the average latency of state-of-the-art methods while maintaining reliability guarantees.

Abstract:
Due to large mass and frequent start-stop, the advanced hybrid propulsion technologies enabling regenerating and reusing of significant amounts of braking energy are critical to achieving future fuel economy goals for city buses. The initial breakaway friction and inertia of the hydraulic hybrid bus can be overcome by energy that would ordinarily already have been wasted, and when running the engine, can operate in more efficient modes. Therefore energy-saving and environmental protection of hydraulic hybrid buses has important significance in application. The simulation model of series hydraulic hybrid bus is created in AMESim. The simulation results of the SHHB model show that it is very prominent in saving energy and reducing harmful emissions.

Abstract:
Commercial vehicle movements compose perhaps 15% of all urban vehicle trips and produce large impacts in key areas, such as congestion, emissions, road wear, and industrial area traffic. A system for modeling such movements was developed for Calgary, Alberta, Canada. It is a novel application of an agent-based microsimulation framework that uses a tour-based approach and emphasizes important elements of urban commercial movement, including the role of service delivery, light commercial vehicles, and trip chaining. The microsimulation uses Monte Carlo techniques to assign tour purpose, vehicle type, next-stop purpose, next-stop location, and next-stop duration. Tours are “grown” with a return-to-establishment alternative within the next-stop purpose allocation, which is consistent with the nature of tour making in urban commercial movements. The Monte Carlo probabilities are established with the use of a series of logit models, with coefficients estimated on the basis of observed behavior of different commercial movement segments. The estimation results in themselves provide insights into the revealed behavior that have not been available previously.

Research has shown that Black and Hispanic drivers are subject to disproportionate stop and post-stop outcomes compared with White drivers. Yet scholars’ understanding of how and why such disparities persist remains underdeveloped. To address this shortcoming, this article applies a sequential approach to the analysis of traffic stop data generated by San Diego Police Department officers in 2014 and 2015. Results show that despite being subject to higher rates of discretionary and nondiscretionary searches, Black drivers were less likely to be found with contraband than matched Whites and were more than twice as likely to be subjected to a field interview where no citation is issued or arrest made. Black drivers were also more likely to face any type of search, as well as high-discretion consent searches, that end in neither citation nor arrest. The article concludes with a discussion of the findings and a series of recommendations.

Abstract:
This study presents jaw movement data from Central Arrernte, an Australian Aboriginal language with six places of articulation in the stop series, including four coronal places of articulation. The focus of the study is on jaw consonant targets, and on the opening and closing movements of the jaw. As a point of comparison, data are also presented for English, a language with three places of articulation in the stop series. In line with previous results for English, jaw position in Arrernte is lowest for the velar /k/. The apico-post-alveolar (retroflex) /ʈ/, which is not found in English, has a jaw position almost as low as /k/. By contrast, the lamino-alveo-palatal /c/, which is also not found in English, has the highest jaw position. The remaining coronal consonants in Arrernte, /t/ (apico-alveolar and lamino-dental, respectively), show intermediate jaw positions, with differences between speakers. In terms of the kinematic measures examined (namely, variability in distance, duration and velocity of opening and closing movements), results show no consistent differences between English and Arrernte jaw movement.
