Abstract:
Cloud computing continues to grow as a preferred development and deployment model, enabling new types of applications to be built while keeping resource requirements convenient for developers. Sacrifices have been made, however, in terms of the security and protection of data stored in these cloud applications, leaving users vulnerable to information leaks and invasions of privacy. We present CRYPSTOR, a storage platform design that addresses data security in the cloud computing context through the use of encryption, while maintaining the desirable properties of the current model, such as efficient storage and sharing.

Abstract:
Data stored in third party storage systems like the cloud might not be secure since confidentiality and integrity of data are not guaranteed. Though cloud computing provides cost-effective storage services, it is a third party service and so, a client cannot trust the cloud service provider to store its data securely within the cloud. Hence, many organizations and users may not be willing to use the cloud services to store their data in the cloud until certain security guarantees are made. In this thesis, a solution to the problem of securely storing the client’s data by maintaining the confidentiality and integrity of the data within the cloud is developed. Five protocols are developed which ensure that the client’s data is stored only on trusted storage servers, replicated only on trusted storage servers, and guarantee that the data owners and other privileged users of that data access the data securely. The system is based on trusted computing platform technology [11]. It uses a Trusted Platform Module, specified by the Trusted Computing Group [11]. An encrypted file system is used to encrypt the user’s data. The system provides data security against a system administrator in the cloud.

Abstract:
Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, System Design and Management Program, 2005.<br>Includes bibliographical references (p. 127-130).<br>In order to cope with the continuous increase of magnetically stored data and of mission critical dependence on this data, storage systems must similarly increase in their functionality offerings, and with that, their complexity. The efficient management of the heterogeneous and complex aggregation of these systems is becoming one of the major challenges to IT customers. At the same time, hardware is becoming commoditized, and the industry is looking towards software for additional revenue generation. This document examines proprietary as well as open-standards attempts at solving the interoperability problem. The first attempt was made by EMC when it developed WideSky, a middleware software layer that would be able to manage third party hardware. It is shown that the aim was to eventually transform this middleware into a de facto standard and with that establish platform leadership in the industry. The WideSky effort failed, and the analysis of this failure attributes it to a lack of industry support and inability at establishing a sustainable value chain. Meanwhile, the industry players rallied around the SNIA body and adopted the SMI specification (SMI-S) as a standard. SMI-S adoption is on the rise, but although it has the formal backing of most of the storage industry firms, it has not yet fulfilled its promise of enabling centralized management of heterogeneous systems. This is partially because of the fact that the functionality that it provides is still lagging behind the functionality that native APIs provide. Moreover, client adoption and the availability of client products that can be directly used by IT customers are still very limited.<br>(cont.) However, an examination of the dynamics surrounding this standard show how SMI-S will benefit greatly from learning effects and network externalities as it continues to grow, and although lagging in traditional functionality, it offers an ancillary functionality of interoperability that is missing from current non- standardized software interfaces. The adoption tipping point is highly dependant on whether or not the value chain can be established before vendors start dropping support for the specification. It is proposed that a positive tipping of the market will make SMI-S a disruptive technology that has the potential of becoming the dominant design for storage management interfaces.<br>by Jean-Claude Jacques Saghbini.<br>S.M.

Abstract:
Offshore oil platforms are used for the exploitation and production of hydrocarbons and consist of a processing plant and a utility plant. The oil and gas industry operations are energy-intensive and, in the case of offshore platforms, the need to decrease energy consumption and reduce CO2 emissions has increased. In the oil and gas industry, the ISO 50001 standard promotes the implementation of energy management systems and proposes indicators based on energy. Interestingly, after several decades of knowledge of the concept of exergy, this has not been formally implemented in the programs and strategies of the oil and gas industry organizations. In this research, the implementation of the exergy method and the carbon capture and storage strategy for the assessment of the performance of a floating, production and storage offloading units FPSO is proposed. FPSO platforms and their processing and utility plants may have different configurations depending on, among others, the reservoir characteristics and production requirements. The possible configurations can therefore be numerous. In this sense, some operation scenarios based on different well-fluid compositions and operation modes are studied. The platform models are developed and simulated using the software Aspen HYSYS®. Results show that, on average, the reduction of 88.8% in CO2 emissions is penalized with a reduction in exergy efficiency of 1.7 points.

Abstract:
This report is a thesis for BTH in collaboration with the company Saab Kockums AB. In order to meet future environmental and economical demands, a vessel must reduce its fuel consumption to have a smaller climate impact and save money. Waste heat recovery systems (WHRS) captures the thermal energy generated from a process that is not used but dumped into the environment and transfers it back to the system. Thermal energy storage (TES) is the method of storing thermal energy which allows heat to be used whenever necessary. Some applications of TES are seasonal storage, where summer heat is stored for use in the winter or when ice is produced during off-peak periods and used for cooling later. The purpose of this study is to investigate the possibilities of utilising a vessel’s waste heat by converting thermal energy into electrical energy. This thesis also aims to investigate conditions for SaltX Technology’s nano-coated salt as a potential solution for thermal energy storage. Initially, the expectations and requirements a future WHRS were investigated in a function analysis. Continuously, the method consisted of a combination of a literature review and dialogue with stakeholders. The literature review was used as a tool to identify, select and study concepts of interest built on scientifically proven facts. Dialogues with stake holders were held as a complement to the literature study to find information. The study showed that an organic Rankine cycle has the highest efficiency for low-medium temperature heat and is therefore most suitable to recover thermal energy from the cooling water. The concept of a steam Rankine cycle is most suitable for recovering thermal energy from the exhaust gases for direct use.The study obtained conditions and important properties for storing thermal energy in salt for later use. Finally, the result showed that a Stirling engine is the most efficient concept for conversion of stored energy into electrical energy. The conclusions are that there are great possibilities for waste heat recovery on marine defence platforms. A Stirling engine for energy conversion in combinations with thermal energy storage shows most promise as a future waste heat recovery system on this type of marine platform.<br>Denna rapport är ett examensarbete för BTH i samarbete med företaget Saab Kockums AB.

Abstract:
They possess high-performance functionality and security to ensure that the daily operations progresses. Software-based storage platforms is an option that can be used to reduce these costs. By imitating advanced technology that already exists in the traditional storage platforms, this can be implemented as software on commodity hardware in order to achieve the same functionality. Ceph is an alternative that is implemented today and intends to provide this choice. We believe that software-based storage solutions are untested and a series of pre-built tests were conducted that examined whether Ceph can guarantee data integrity. What we observed was a lack of functionality to maintain data integrity after Ceph completed the recovery process, when the storage cluster experienced high utilization.

Abstract:
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 20-23, 2003 / Riviera Hotel and Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada<br>Disk Recorders now represent a high performance, low cost and reliable alternative to traditional tape recorders for a wide range of platform data recording applications. This paper discusses the latest advances in disk-based recording technology in the context of multi-channel Telemetry applications, showing the degree of flexibility that is now possible in terms of both channel count and the ability to record synchronous and asynchronous digital data streams alongside multiple wideband analog channels. The techniques described are equally applicable to Acoustic, SIGINT and Telecommunications data capture and analysis applications aboard static, airborne and maritime platforms. Topics covered include how new disk-based data capture technologies have been able to extend bandwidth, storage capacity, signal fidelity and the overall capability of mission recorders. Advanced operational issues, including true ‘read-after-write’, data security, portability and archiving, enhanced data management and analysis strategies are also covered. The Paper includes detailed test results from COTS Disk Recorders already in service as well as an informative Road Map for this exciting new technology.

Abstract:
This thesis describes the process of creating a platform-independent mobile application for connecting mobile devices to wireless sensors using Bluetooth Low Energy, collecting data from connected sensors and uploading the collected data to a cloud storage service. As consumers and researchers use more sensors and other Bluetooth-devices, [1] one could argue that there is a need for simpler and standardised solutions to working with these. A literature study has been conducted where information on related research has been collected and important information about the necessary software components has been evaluated. In combination with the literature study, an IT artefact has been developed in the form of a mobile application that has been tested according to collected requirements to ensure the application's functionality. The purpose of this work is to contribute with a clear scientific process over what is required to create a mobile application of this kind and what potential difficulties exist in present-day design of this type of applications. The results show that some manufacturers may not be following the standards for Bluetooth data communication, thus making it hard to write generalized methods for retrieving data from sensors of any type or manufacturer.

Abstract:
Storage devices are rapidly changing, and we need to adapt the OS storage software stack to keep up with the changes. Such a re-evaluation of the storage software stack is especially required for mobile platforms because they are relying on inexpensive flash storage devices having very different performance characteristics from the familiar hard disk.In this thesis work, we first show the importance of storage in mobile platforms; contrary to conventional wisdom, we find evidence that storage is a significant contributor to application performance on mobile devices. Then, we explore the solution space for flash storage; user-level library for selective logging, host-side write buffering layer, and OS buffer replacement scheme for flash storage have been studied. Finally, we build an integrated solution for smartphone storage, named Fjord. In the Fjord study, we re-design logging and RAM buffering solutions for smartphones, and also propose fine-grained reliability control mechanisms. We prove that non-volatile logging can improve storage performance remarkably. Understanding the characteristics of cloud-backed applications and controlling the reliability constraint for chosen cloud-backed applications can achieve additional significant performance gain.We implement and evaluate our solution on a real Android smartphone, and demonstrate significant performance gains for everyday apps on such platforms.

Abstract:
Search engines provide a gateway to discover content online. The content comes in the form of web pages, which are categorized by the automated services of a search engine. Certain steps can be taken to optimize the way web sites are categorized, all of which are done to improve the visibility on search engines. Another way to increase visibility of a web site can be achieved with search engine marketing. Search engine marketing describes the process of advertising content on search engines. Search engine providers have different tools that may assist the process of advertising. The company that this report concerns provides services in the areas of optimizing and advertising content on search engines. The problem manifests in the company’s current system, which doesn’t provide an acceptable way of analyzing statistics of their search engine marketing efforts. Employees involved with their respective customers may not share information about their strategies and statistics to co-workers. The purpose of the project is to define a method for the company and its employees to achieve a higher level analysis of keyword and advertisement data. The work is realized in a platform that provides employees a way to extract relevant statistics from a web application. A qualitative methodology is defined to collect descriptive information about the company’s processes and their expectations on the system to be developed. The system is developed in a series of iterations and is deployed on a server provided by the company. The efforts have resulted in a useful system that may provide employees with deeper insights as to which factors that might be key for the success of certain advertisement strategies. However, the effects of the system have not been measured to confirm if the method actually improved the company’s search engine marketing efforts. To conclude the study, a set of recommendations has been given for future work.

Abstract:
Metal-organic materials (MOMs) represent a unique class of porous materials that captured a great scientific interest in various fields such as chemical engineering, physics and materials science. They are typically assembled from metal ions or metal clusters connected by multifunctional organic ligands. They represent a wide range of families of materials that varied from 0D to 3D networks: the discrete (0D) structures exemplified by metal-organic polyhedra (MOPs), cubes and nanoballs while the polymeric 1D, 2D and 3D structures exemplified by coordination polymers (CPs). Indeed, the porous 3D structures include metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), porous coordination polymers (PCPs) and porous coordination networks (PCNs). Nevertheless, MOMs are long and well-known from more than 50 years ago as exemplified by CPs that were firstly introduced in early 1960s and reviewed in 1964. However, the scientific interest toward MOMs has been enormously grown only since late 1990s, with the discovery of MOMs with novel properties, especially the high permanent porosity as exemplified by MOF-5 and HKUST-1. The inherent tunability of MOMs from the de novo design to the post-synthetic modification along with their robustness, afford numerous important families of nets "platforms" such as pcu, dia, tbo, mtn and rht topology networks. There are more than 20,000 crystal structures of MOMs in the Cambridge Structure Database (CSD). However, only a few of the networks can be regarded as families or platforms where the structure is robust, fine-tunable and inherently modular. Such robustness and inherent modularity of the platforms allow the bottom-up control over the structure "form comes before function" which subsequently facilitates the systematic study of structure/function in hitherto unprecedented way compared with the traditional screening approaches that are commonly used in materials science. In this context, we present the crystal engineering of two MOM platforms; dia and novel fsc platforms as well we introduce the novel two-step synthetic approach using trigonal prismatic clusters to build multinodal 2D and 3D MOM platforms. For the dia platform, we introduce a novel strategy to control over the level of the interpenetration of dia topology nets via solvent-template control and study the impact of the resulting different pore sizes on the squeezing of CH4, CO2 and H2 gases. New benchmark material for methane isosteric heat of adsorption was produced from this novel work. Indeed we introduce the crystal engineering of a novel versatile 4,6-c fsc platform that is formed from linking two of the longest known and most widely studied MBBs: the square planar MBB [Cu(AN)4]2+( AN = aromatic nitrogen donor) and square paddlewheel MBB [Cu2(CO2R)4] that are connected by five different linkers with different length, L1-L5. The resulting square grid nets formed from alternating [Cu(AN)4]2+ and [Cu2(CO2R)4] moieties are pillared at the axial sites of the [Cu(AN)4]2+ MBBs with dianionic pillars to form neutral 3D 4,6-connected fsc (four, six type c) nets. Pore size control in this family of fsc nets was exerted by varying the length of the linker ligand whereas pore chemistry was implemented by unsaturated metal centers (UMCs) and the use of either inorganic or organic pillars. 1,5-naphthalenedisulfonate (NDS) anions pillar in an angular fashion to afford fsc-1-NDS, fsc-2-NDS, fsc-3-NDS, fsc-4-NDS and fsc-5-NDS from L1-L5, respectively. Experimental CO2 sorption studies revealed higher isosteric heat of adsorption (Qst) for the compound with the smaller pore size (fsc-1-NDS). Computational studies revealed that there is higher CO2 occupancy about the UMCs in fsc-1-NDS compared to other extended variants that were synthesized with NDS. SiF62- (SIFSIX) anions in fsc-2-SIFSIX form linear pillars that result in eclipse [Cu2(CO2R)4] moieties at a distance of just 5.86 Å. The space between the [Cu2(CO2R)4] moieties is a strong CO2 binding site that can be regarded as being an example of a single-molecule trap; this finding has been supported by modeling studies. Furthermore, we present herein the implementation of the two-step synthetic approach for the construction of novel multinodal MOM platforms, using the trigonal prism cluster [M3(µ3-O)(RCO2)6] as a precursor to build novel stable multinodal 2D and 3D frameworks. In the first step, the bifunctional carboxylate ligands are reacted with Fe+3 or Cr+3 salts to isolate highly symmetrical decorated trigonal prismatic clusters with diverse decoration such as pyridine, amine and cyano coordinating functional groups using pyridine carboxylate, amino carboxylate, cyano carboxylate type ligands, respectively. Afterward, the isolated highly soluble trigonal prismatic salts were reacted in the second step with another metal that can act as node or linker to connect the discrete trigonal prismatic clusters to build 2D or 3D networks. Indeed, we were able to develop another novel high-symmetry Cu cluster [Cu3(µ3-Cl)(RNH2)6Cl6] by utilizing CuCl2 salt and amine decorated trigonal prismatic cluster. Two novel 3D water stable frameworks with acs and stp topologies have been afforded. Our work on the crystal engineering design and synthesis of new MOM platforms offer an exceptional level of control over the resulting structure including; the resulting topology, pore size, pore chemistry and thereby enable the control over the resulting physicochemical properties in a manner that facilitates the achieving of the desired properties.

Addo, Samuel. "Development of targeted insecticide treatment for improved storage of maize cobs on traditional platforms in Ghana." Thesis, University of Greenwich, 2003. http://gala.gre.ac.uk/10337/.

Full text
Abstract:
Improvements to maize cob storage on farms in the Volta Region of Ghana were investigated with a view to limiting the damage and losses associated with the Larger Grain Borer (Prostephanus truncatus) and weevils (Sitophilus spp). The study was initiated by a survey of those technologies adopted following an earlier project to help farmers protect maize against P. truncatus. The study included farmers’ perceptions of their own storage problems and was designed to provide background information on how farmers might benefit from a novel technique of applying pesticide to only the basal layers of cobs on the platform. Field trials, comparing losses in experimental maize platforms showed that treatment of only the bottom 20% of maize cobs, with Actellic Super (permethrin and pirimiphosmethyl) in dust or emulsion formulation, could give protection that was significantly better than no treatment and not significantly different from full treatment. When combined with placing a plastic sheet over the platform there was a significant reduction in losses while the presence of preharvest infestation resulted in somewhat higher losses. Farmer participatory trials demonstrated that farmers could implement the technique successfully by themselves and subsequent analysis showed that a range of major stakeholders perceived benefits from the method and reaffirmed it as a practical approach. The cost effectiveness of the method was investigated based on assumptions about maize losses and prices. This analysis suggested that targeted treatment is likely to be cost-effective under a wide range of circumstances. However, it was concluded that the safest option for farmers would be to use targeted treatment for those platforms that would be consumed during the course of the year and use full treatment for platforms destined for long-term storage (>6 months). It is suggested that such an approach would widen farmer access to stock protection and improve food security and livelihoods.

Lee, Min. "Memory region: a system abstraction for managing the complex memory structures of multicore platforms." Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/50398.

Full text
Abstract:
The performance of modern many-core systems depends on the effective use of their complex cache and memory structures, and this will likely become more pronounced with the impending arrival of on-chip 3D stacked and non-volatile off-chip byte-addressable memory. Yet to date, operating systems have not treated memory as a first class schedulable resource, embracing memory heterogeneity. This dissertation presents a new software abstraction, called ‘memory region’, which denotes the current set of physical memory pages actively used by workloads. Using this abstraction, memory resources can be scheduled for applications to fully exploit a platform's underlying cache and memory system, thereby gaining improved performance and predictability in execution, particularly for the consolidated workloads seen in virtualized and cloud computing infrastructures. The abstraction's implementation in the Xen hypervisor involves the run-time detection of memory regions, the scheduled mapping of these regions to caches to match performance goals, and maintaining region-to-cache mappings using per-cache page tables. This dissertation makes the following specific contributions. First, its region scheduling method proposes that the location of memory blocks rather than CPU utilization is the principal determinant where workloads are run. It proposes a new scheduling method, the region scheduling that the location of memory blocks determines where the workloads are run. Second, treating memory blocks as first-class resources, new methods for efficient cache management are shown to improve application performance as well as the performance of certain operating system functions. Third, explicit memory scheduling makes it possible to disaggregate operating systems, without the need to change OS sources and with only small markups of target guest OS functionality. With this method, OS functions can be mapped to specific desired platform components, such as file system confined to running on specific cores and using only certain memory resources designated for its use. This can improve performance for applications heavily dependent on certain OS functions, by dynamically providing those functions with the resources needed for their current use, and it can prevent performance-critical application functionality from being needlessly perturbed by OS functions used for other purposes or by other jobs. Fourth, extensions of region scheduling can also help applications deal with the heterogeneous memory resources present in future systems, including on-chip stacked DRAM and NUMA or even NVRAM memory modules. More generally, regions scheduling is shown to apply to memory structures with well-defined differences in memory access latencies.

Abstract:
Cloud computing is a relatively new form of computing which uses virtualized resources. It is dynamically scalable and is often provided as pay for use service over the Internet or Intranet or both. With increasing demand for data storage in the cloud, the study of data-intensive applications is becoming a primary focus. Data intensive applications are those which involve high CPU usage, processing large volumes of data typically in size of hundreds of gigabytes, terabytes or petabytes. The research in this thesis is focused on the Amazon’s Elastic Cloud Compute (EC2) and Amazon Elastic Map Reduce (EMR) using HiBench Hadoop Benchmark suite. HiBench is a Hadoop benchmark suite and is used for performing and evaluating Hadoop based data intensive computation on both these cloud platforms. Both quantitative and qualitative comparisons of Amazon EC2 and Amazon EMR are presented. Also presented are their pricing models and suggestions for future research.

Full text
Abstract:
Monitoring data-intensive scientific infrastructures in real-time such as jobs, data transfers, and hardware failures is vital for efficient operation. Due to the high volume and velocity of events that are produced, traditional methods are no longer optimal. Several techniques, as well as enabling architectures, are available to support the Big Data issue. In this respect, this thesis complements existing survey work by contributing an extensive literature review of both traditional and emerging Big Data architecture. Scalability, low-latency, fault-tolerance, and intelligence are key challenges of the traditional architecture. However, Big Data technologies and approaches have become increasingly popular for use cases that demand the use of scalable, data intensive processing (parallel), and fault-tolerance (data replication) and support for low-latency computations. In the context of a scalable data store and analytics platform for monitoring data-intensive scientific infrastructure, Lambda Architecture was adapted and evaluated on the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid, which has been proven effective. This is especially true for computationally and data-intensive use cases. In this thesis, an efficient strategy for the collection and storage of large volumes of data for computation is presented. By moving the transformation logic out from the data pipeline and moving to analytics layers, it simplifies the architecture and overall process. Time utilised is reduced, untampered raw data are kept at storage level for fault-tolerance, and the required transformation can be done when needed. An optimised Lambda Architecture (OLA), which involved modelling an efficient way of joining batch layer and streaming layer with minimum code duplications in order to support scalability, low-latency, and fault-tolerance is presented. A few models were evaluated; pure streaming layer, pure batch layer and the combination of both batch and streaming layers. Experimental results demonstrate that OLA performed better than the traditional architecture as well the Lambda Architecture. The OLA was also enhanced by adding an intelligence layer for predicting data access pattern. The intelligence layer actively adapts and updates the model built by the batch layer, which eliminates the re-training time while providing a high level of accuracy using the Deep Learning technique. The fundamental contribution to knowledge is a scalable, low-latency, fault-tolerant, intelligent, and heterogeneous-based architecture for monitoring a data-intensive scientific infrastructure, that can benefit from Big Data, technologies and approaches.

Abstract:
The diploma thesis answers set questions that relate to two different distribution environments, the two options for developers to directly offer their mobile applications to the end users. Distribution is being conducted in the App Store and Google Play application stores, where only such applications that oblige basic requirements can be released and provided to customers. The requirements, official sources of information and support services of the two providers are analyzed in the theoretical part of the thesis. Processes revolving around the application distribution itself are described in the following practical part. Distribution consists of processes from the developer account registration to submitting the application for a review or a check. Sufficient knowledge base could be gathered not only due to a proper exploration of the issue, but also due to an actual application release accomplished by the author. A cross-platform mobile application to be released has been developed solely for the purposes of this diploma thesis. The application has been built in two platform specific versions. Whilst publishing it, an emphasis was laid on keeping the conditions as similar as possible to achieve viable case study results. The application release represents the case that produced all data that enabled a direct comparison and overall evaluation of the different developer settings at the end of the thesis. Findings and conclusions of this thesis can be used by developers and other interested parties that are looking for an integrated source of information that regards releasing a cross-platform mobile application on iOS and Android platform.

Abstract:
The emergence of Cloud computing brings forward many challenges that may limit the adoption rate of the Cloud paradigm. As data volumes processed by Cloud applications increase exponentially, designing efficient and secure solutions for data management emerges as a crucial requirement. The goal of this thesis is to enhance a distributed data-management system with self-management capabilities, so that it can meet the requirements of the Cloud storage services in terms of scalability, data availability, reliability and security. Furthermore, we aim at building a Cloud data service both compatible with state-of-the-art Cloud interfaces and able to deliver high-throughput data storage. To meet these goals, we proposed generic self-awareness, self-protection and self-configuration components targeted at distributed data-management systems. We validated them on top of BlobSeer, a large-scale data-management system designed to optimize highly-concurrent data accesses. Next, we devised and implemented a BlobSeer-based file system optimized to efficiently serve as a storage backend for Cloud services. We then integrated it within a real-world Cloud environment, the Nimbus platform. The benefits and drawbacks of using Cloud storage for real-life applications have been emphasized in evaluations that involved data-intensive MapReduce applications and tightly-coupled, high-performance computing applications

Abstract:
In recent years oil and gas mining has moved into increasingly deeper water in search of undeveloped fields. As water depths approach and exceed 3000 m conventional offshore foundation systems become inefficient and ineffective in stabilising platforms and floating production storage units. The trend of supporting structure design in deep water has been to install catenary and taut leg mooring systems. Consequently, many types of anchoring systems are being developed and used in order to withstand large mooring forces. The SEPLA (Suction Embedded Plate Anchor) is ideal for use in this situation. This project has employed advanced numerical techniques and centrifuge testing to study pullout behaviour of plate anchor foundations in different soil profiles and suction caisson installation effect with the aim of generating a robust framework for design. The behaviour of strip and circular plate anchors during vertical pullout in uniform and normally consolidated clays has been studied by means of small strain and large deformation finite element analyses. Both fully bonded (attached), and ‘vented’ (no suction on rear face), anchors have been considered. The current numerical results were compared with existing laboratory test data, finite element results and analytical solutions. This study showed that the ultimate pullout capacity factors (Nc) for deep embedment were 11.6 and 11.7 for smooth and rough strip anchors and 13.1 and 13.7 for smooth and rough circular anchors respectively. When the anchor base was vented, the soil stayed attached to the anchor base for deep embedment, and the pullout capacity was therefore the same as for the attached anchor. The separation depth ratio, Hs/B or Hs/D was found to increase linearly with the normalised strength ratio, su/γ'B or su/γ'D.<br>Numerical simulation has been conducted to assess the bearing capacity for inclined pullout plate anchors. This bearing capacity analysis was performed by embedding the anchors in clay with different initial inclinations and different embedment ratios. Both the attached anchor base and vented base were evaluated. The results showed that the bearing capacities of the inclined plate anchors were associated with the inclination angles and base conditions. The separation depth of the plate anchors can be assessed by a simple equation from vertically pulled out plate anchors. Large deformation finite element analyses of plate anchor keying in clay has been performed. The effects of anchor thickness, anchor padeye eccentricity, anchor-soil interface roughness, soil shear strength, anchor submerged weight and soil disturbance have been studied with anchors in uniform or normally consolidated clays. The numerical results were compared with transparent soil test and existing centrifuge test data. The study showed that the RITSS method works well in simulating the anchor keying process. Anchor padeye eccentricity played an important role in anchor keying. A normalised anchor geometry ratio was used to estimate the loss in embedment during plate anchor’s keying. Both finite element analysis and centrifuge tests have been conducted to study the suction caisson installation effect. In finite element analysis, the soil disturbed zone varied from 3 times the caisson wall thickness to a full area inside a caisson.<br>Centrifuge tests of suction embedded plate anchors were conducted in normally consolidated kaolin clay and transparent uniform soil. It can be concluded that the reduction in anchor capacity due to soil disturbance after suction caisson installation depends on re-consolidation time and soil sensitivity. The soil disturbance also reduced the loss of embedment during the anchor keying process.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to examine the follower's attitudes towards Ving, TUI and Apollos posts on Facebook and how they are interpreted based on the customer loyalty and e-loyalty. It also examines how the tour operators express loyalty through their facebookpage. The customer loyalty are based on Oliver’s (1999) theory and e-loyalty is based on the “8C’s” that have been developed by Srinivasan, Anderson &amp; Ponnavolu (2002). The study is based on a netnographic analysis to get an overview and basic knowledge of the tour operators communication on Facebook. The analysis shows that the posts have differences and similarities in terms of loyalty to the tour operators’ words. TUI and Apollo mostly focus on the conative loyalty, unlike Ving where the focus is on affective loyalty. The study is also based on semistructured interviews which is appropriate in order to gain a deeper understanding. The theories are applied through a variety of questions that have been asked to the respondents during their interviews. It appears that customers' attitudes towards Apollo appear to be different from the attitudes towards Ving and TUI. About e-loyalty, Ving and TUI seem to fulfill several of the "8C’s" based on the customers attitudes. Apollo has not proved that they are as strong as the other two. This study shows a similar result as the previous studies but they don't fully agree in all aspects.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立臺灣大學<br>高階公共管理組<br>95<br>Anamnesis (medical record) is an important document for recording disease progression for certain patient and diagnostic procedure for medical practitioners. Therefore, anamnesis is also meaningful for medical students in education, because anamnesis recorded therapeutic strategies or pathways used by experienced medical staffs. Meanwhile, medical record could be the certification, and may play a pivotal role in medical legal issues. The correct recording from anamnesis would be a useful tool in protecting not only excellent medical practitioners but human right of patients. Conventional medical anamnesis was recorded in papers, and such documents could be emphasized their value in humanism and art. However, the difficult issue for preserving such precious documents was still unresolved. In Taiwan, the medical anamnesis was regulated to be destroyed by burning after preserving for seven years. Thereafter, the medical record will be lost forever. In 21th century, electronic anamnesis could be expected a newer preserving pathway for medical record in various forms, including literalness and images. Information-storing platform for anamnesis should be considered to be the media between different clinics or hospitals. Such platforms could be expected to be more convenient for medical practitioners to obtain immediate information of certain patients, and such platform will decrease the information imbalance between physicians and patients. In our research, we reviewed the development of electronic anamnesis in departed decades, and we hope to establish the concept of electronic anamnesis in localized or even in multinational medical systems for establishing individual medical records via specification in such information-storing platforms.

碩士<br>國立高雄應用科技大學<br>電子工程系碩士班<br>103<br>Recently, applications of cloud storage grow rapidly and exist everywhere. Automatic data storage and synchronization become convenient and efficient. It thus leads to the problems of security, rescue and privacy in the cloud storage systems. This thesis presented and developed the mobile platform and architecture for reliable and secure data storage in the cloud systems. The proposed method for data privacy is to break the original data into several fragments, which are stored in different commercial clouds. Data reliability is achieved by utilizing the RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) algorithm to protect the data from damage. In addition, the developed platform also provides an efficient strategy to select the clouds for rapid data recovery, which is based on the network delays of clouds and transmission type. Finally, the presented architecture was implemented in the Android system by utilizing both JNI (Java Native Interface) and NDK (Native Development Kit) to enhance the performance of the RAID algorithms.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立中正大學<br>通訊工程研究所<br>102<br>Newly developed techniques for intelligent sensor systems make it possible to register the mechanical wear-out of parts, such as band saws, ball screws and gearbox reducers, by collecting working signals from them, such as vibrations and preload pressure and temperature changes. To build an accurate wear model, we need to log as many real signals as possible from numerous parts in machine tools. This raises a substantial problem: How can we collect a large number of real signals from the parts installed in many machine tools—which could be located anywhere in the world—and aggregate data to use in constructing a wearing model, as well as enabling remote systems analysis and send warnings if the parts are worn? In this study, based on our previous work, we design a M2M system to realize a cloud-based service that logs mechanical wear-out of parts. The proposed system is characterized by using a mobile network, such as GPRS /3G, to upload collected data without the need to pre-deploy conventional network equipment in factories; and taking advantages of off-the-shelf cloud platform services (Google Apps Engine, GAE) rather than maintaining a private database for logging the data, which reduces labor and equipment costs for the database. We design and implement this system and install it in a factory to evaluate it. The proposed system can be used to collect operating signals regarding mechanical wear-out of parts and can allow manufacturers to track state of wear and send warnings to tool owners before wear-out.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立虎尾科技大學<br>電機工程系碩士班<br>107<br>In recent years, the development of renewable energy has been paid considerable attention over all the world. Since 2000, Taiwan has been building a solar-renewable energy-related setting. After the national policy to promote the "Sunshine Roof Million Block" program, Taiwan's powerful support for the development of solar energy systems has been added. It shows that solar renewable energy in Taiwan will be infinitely developed in the future. The development of cloud-based, digital, and intelligent technologies in recent years has advanced by leaps and bounds, and related products have come out one after another. Especially in the intelligent part, electrical monitoring in homes and public facilities is developed on home computers and mobile devices. Cloudization is the ability to record all information of related electrical equipment using IoT technology in the cloud. This not only enables complete storage of the history and details of the use of electrical appliances, but also through a complete set of real-time monitoring systems for monitoring and maintenance purposes. The Internet of Things has subverted the way of life of human beings, greatly improving the life style of instant, safe and convenient, and delivering professional information to users in the most direct and correct way. It can be seen that clouding all information and manipulating it on mobile devices is an inevitable trend in the future, which is the biggest motivation for urging this research. This study aims to add an emergency power supply system to the existing power system. In addition, through the cloud and intelligent technology, the information is instantly transmitted to the cloud, so that the user can monitor the status of the standby lithium battery at any time, and then switch the related switches. An emergency backup energy storage device that combines solar renewable energy with utility power is developed. First, the solar maximum power point tracking device is constructed to ensure the utilization of solar energy renewable energy. The lithium battery in the system can be charged via solar or commercial power as an emergency backup electrical energy storage device. In this study, a simple and feasible lithium battery charge and discharge switching strategy is proposed to improve the integrity of the research. A cloud monitoring system that allows users to instantly monitor the status of electrical energy storage devices on their home computers and mobile devices is also built in our research.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立臺灣大學<br>資訊工程學研究所<br>97<br>Network Attached Storage (NAS) servers are popular nowadays for sharing storage over the network. In recent years, NAS manufacturers took advantage of the System-on-Chip (SoC) technologies to reduce the cost of NAS servers and integrated many value-add features to attract customers. Value-add features such as peer-to-peer (P2P) applications, photo viewers, media players, and surveillance applications are offered by an entry-level NAS product on the market today. Overall, cost/performance ratios, administrative convenience, value-add features, and data security are the factors that influence the design and the user experience on NAS servers. The Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3) is a home multimedia and game console with a powerful IBM Cell processor and a Blu-ray Disc reader, in a compact package which costs about the same as an entry-level NAS server. With a much faster processor, the PS3 outperforms the similarily priced Synology DS-207+ in many applications, but misses a NAS functionality. In this thesis, we present the design and implementation of a NAS server with the PS3. In addition to the common features seen on NAS servers, we utilized the Synergistic Processing Elements (SPE) in the IBM Cell processor to accelerate compute-intensive applications. Our work successfully integrated NAS services and accelerated features on the PS3, and our results show that the PS3 offers higher cost/performance for surveillance and multimedia than similarly priced NAS servers. For accelerating of face detection with using 0 SPE as the baseline, we get at most 9.52 speedup. KEYWORDS: NAS, PlayStation 3, IBM Cell processor, P2P, surveillance.

Cao, Qian. "SCMFS Performance Enhancement and Implementation on Mobile Platform." Thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/ETD-TAMU-2012-08-11761.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis presents a method for enhancing performance of Storage Class Memory File System (SCMFS) and an implementation of SCMFS on Android platform. It focuses on analyzing performance influencing factors of memory file systems and the differences in implementation of SCMFS on Android and Linux kernels. SCMFS allocates memory pages as file blocks and employs virtual memory addresses as file block addresses. SCMFS utilizes processor's memory management unit and TLB (Translation Lookaside Buffer) during file accesses. TLB is an expensive resource and has a limited number of entries to cache virtual to physical address translations. TLB miss results in expensive page walks through memory page table. Thus TLB misses play an important role in determining SCMFS performance. In this thesis, SCMFS is designed to support both 4KB and 2MB page sizes in order to reduce TLB misses and to avoid significant internal fragmentation. By comparing SCMFS with YAFFS2 and EXT4 using popular benchmarks, both advantages and disadvantages of SCMFS huge-page version and small-page version are revealed. In the second part of this thesis, an implementation of SCMFS on Android platform is presented. At the time of working on this research project, Android kernel was not merged into Linux kernel yet. Two main changes of SCMFS kernel code: memory zoning and inode functions, are made to be compatible with Android kernel. AndroSH, a file system benchmark for SCMFS on Android, is developed based on shell script. Evaluations are made from three perspectives to compare SCMFS with YAFFS2 and EXT4: I/O throughput, user data access latency, and application execution latency. SCMFS shows a performance advantage because of its small instruction footprint and its pre-allocation mechanism. However, the singly linked list used by SCMFS to store subdirectories is less efficient than HTree index used by EXT4. The future work can improve lookup efficiency of SCMFS.

Abstract:
碩士<br>東海大學<br>資訊工程學系<br>103<br>In this thesis, a LCD Flicker cloud storage system is proposed. This data storage system is based on Hadoop and Hbase architecture, which factory could upload measurement and test results of LCD flicker into HBase, then generate online and real-time feedback for engineers to control those variations. The purpose of LCD Flicker cloud storage system is to overcome the disadvantages of currently used system, which has no capability to save data collected from production lines. Because that measured data are only store locally within testing equipment and unable to report to the engineer, when errors occurred, it is impossible for system to analyze and observe the trend of variations. Therefore, LCD Flicker cloud storage system has a critical role in order to monitor measured data online and real-time. This system is build by private cloud architecture, mainly used between the factory and the factory data sharing, and use the LCD Flicker data to perform failure rate analysis. In this thesis, the experiments are conducted by using virtualization platform with Hadoop and HBase. We performe flicker data transferring and accessing, and analyizing the performance, also enhance the overall product quality and performance.
