Full textThis research questions the material and cultural aspects of a Liberty Spencer construction, which is examined here as a historical document. This clothing was part of a wedding dress and was used about 12 October 1912, the wedding day, by a 15 years old girl. The weeding took place on the border of Minas Gerais, southeast region of Brazil. This research starts from material culture perspective to develop into the fields of history, considering economic, political and cultural aspects of the platinense society. That was a rural and traditional society on the beginning of republican system (so called Republica Velha), the same period of the Art Nouveau artistic movement, named Liberty movement in Italy. Thus, the thesis questions the relationship between society, its vesture system and its link with occidental fashion, considering the object history. This thesis is structured on five axes: the person who owned the object; the productive environment; the dressmakers professional qualification environment; the press; and finally, the object. This research is based on several sources: iconographic, census, accounting books, fashion newspapers and magazines, technical manuals of clothes manufacturing (modeling, cutting and sewing), political and economic periodicals, archives, oral testimonies, artifacts of the period, raw materials, the philological reconstruction of the object, etc. The main object is to understand the process and the raw materials, commercialization, manufacturing, cost, fashion and social hierarchy problematics that this artifact represents in the various manufacturing stages, of cutting and assembly.

Full textThe aim of the thesis is to study the institutions, the contents, the agents, and the effects of fascist cultural diplomacy in Spain and Portugal from the Ethiopian war to Second World War. After the Ethiopian colonial war and the proclamation of the Italian Empire, fascist imperialistic wave involved a renewed effort toward culture abroad. Italian institutes of culture were established. Designed by the philosopher Giovanni Gentile in 1926 but left aside until a decade later, the institutes promoted Italian culture through language courses, exhibitions, conferences, and seminars held by Italian guests or local professors. The target audience was foreign cultural and political élites. The thesis tackle in details the first steps of the institutes in Lisbon and Madrid: their activities, the main characters, and the successes. Afterwards, it analyzes the war years, a period in which the Italian cultural diplomacy was forbidden to perform explicit political propaganda. Therefore, the institute proposed a strict a-political agenda. After the Italian armistice with the Allied powers, followed by the Nazi occupation and the outbreak of civil war, the life of the Institutes was left to the resourcefulness of the directors with little guidance from the new Italian government. The directors struggled to keep the institutes alive without sufficient economic funds and they had the difficult task to legitimize an institute born under fascism but now expression of new postfascist government. Thus, cultural diplomacy became strongly connected with the political relationships among the Italian community in the Iberian Peninsula. A group of fascists organized a shadow diplomatic mission of Mussolini’s Italian Social Republic. With the help of the Allies, the agenda of the institutes of culture shifted toward the opposition to the new fascist propaganda. Despite the difficult times, the lack of funds and employees, the institutes managed to survive the period and became the principal tools of cultural diplomacy implemented by the new democratic postwar Italy.

Full textThe everlasting idea of a «great Bologna» shapes, during the «economic miracle» years, local political and administrative action that put the city at the midst of a economic region made by industrial expansion. With the aim of studying socio-political implications of industrialization during the 1960s and 1970s, this research’s aim is to weave three separate level of analysis: a) the process of socio-economic transformation during those decades with the purpose of understanding the general features – in terms of economics, dimensional, spatial – within it extra-local connections; b) the role played by the Italian Communist Party (PCI), as local hegemonic actor, while developing a specific territorial political economy, seen in respect to other local actors (Chamber of Commerce and National Artisans’ Federation, CNA) and in the complex dialectics between party’s center versus Emilian periphery; c) the study of specific trajectories of subjective and individual patterns as a way to give complex historical perspective otherwise collapsed within a well established narrative usually concerned in emphasizing continuity and inner coherence instead of crafting a specific place for aporias and historical cleavages. Against this established narrative , the research criticize the category of «Emilian model» as a precise ideological formula which continues to have strong influence in present time. Furthermore, by using a framework shaped into three different topics – professional identity, cultural-political belonging, autonomy research –, the dissertation aims at redefine a non-ontological ‘labor culture of self-employment’ as an attempt of shed lights on aporias and contradictions within its problematic relationship with Third Italy’s narrative of small entrepreneurship.

Full textThis thesis aims to highlight the role played by Alberto Carocci as chief editor, co-founder, and cultural organizer, in collaboration with Alberto Moravia, of the first series of the review "Nuovi Argomenti" (1953-1965). This study is based on the recovery of substantial unpublished documentation relating to Carocci's correspondence with the main contributors to the first series of the review: it especially draws on the mailing with Norberto Bobbio, Italo Calvino, Giulio Einaudi, Franco Fortini, Georg Lukàcs, Adriano Olivetti and Sergio Solmi. Indeed, these unpublished documentary sources, preserved in the archives of the forementioned contributors and in the private Carocci’s one, offered a complete picture of the network underpinning “Nuovi Argomenti”. Intellectual, political, amicable and professional relations are described and analysed by this study with the aim of emphasizing the most significant moments in the cultural and literary history of the review during the 1950s and the 1960s.

Full textThe research focuses the role played by Adriano Bernareggi, priest in Milan, then bishop of Bergamo since 1932, in the renewal movement of ecclesiastical studies during the first three decades of the twentieth century. Trained at the Gregorian and Lateran Universities, in a climate marked by modernism and vatican reaction, Bernareggi taught at the seminary of Milan, from 1909 to 1932, and at the Catholic University, from 1922 to 1926. In these sites, he strove to give a modern response - not modernist – to the spiritual anxiety of modern man, through a new religious language, able to enhance Church history and, especially, its liturgy. Particular attention has been paid to: the teaching, including the attempt to promote an update of the Ratio Studiorum of the Theological Faculty, following lines that anticipated Deus Scientiarum Dominus; the direction of the magazine “La Scuola Cattolica”, that he attempted to transform in a national periodic of sacred sciences, to regenerate religious studies through the application of an historical perspective and critical-philological research method; the participation in the liturgical and artistic movement in Milan, looking to french teachings and Maria Laach, especially to rediscovery the initiation value of rites; the prevostship at St. Vittore al Corpo, a laboratory of a new “liturgical practice”; the role in the debate on the Roman Question and Conciliation.

Full textThis thesis analyzes the contemporary electoral decline of the Israeli Labor Party in relation to historical events, social and demographic changes that have led to an effective change in the Israeli political system. In particular, the research focuses on the electoral results, trying to underline how the dynamics indicated above have influenced the electoral trends and the political offer of the party itself. The Nineties represent a fundamental passage in which it is possibleto understand the reasons why the Labor Party seems unable, still today, to reverse the negative trend of the last fifteen years.

Full textThe historical analysis of museums’ Public History practices brings the relation between science and public use of history – often regarded as antithetical - into the historiographical dimension. In order to reflect on the social and political implications of these types of narration of the past, our research reconstructs the formation and development of the collection of the Great War sources from Milan Museum of Risorgimento between the two World Wars. By taking the standpoint of Cultural History, our research questions the role that the historical imagery, embodied in a museum installation, has had in the process of nationalization of the masses in Italy. The follow-up on the figure and work of Antonio Monti (Director, 1925-45) enabled us to frame the process of formation and development of the War Archive-Museum within a social, political and scientific context that clarifies the knowledge gathered so far about the dynamics between center and periphery, as well as about the phases of the memory of war. Besides the study of documentary sources of various nature from Milan’s Civiche Raccolte Storiche (eg. paper documents, correspondence, memorabilia, graphics), the research made use of published sources (brochures, volumes, periodics) and proper archival sources. Among the primary archival sources, the main ones are the registers, card files, catalogs, and the other sets of documentation produced by the museum. The material and immaterial aspects of these sources have been analyzed from both a qualitative and a quantitative point of view. Starting from the archive analysis, from the study of the document management system, and finanlly from the relation between organized and described space, the museum practices concerning the Great War narration have been mainly construed as a material organization of the space (respectively in the archive, in the library, and in the museum). The museum history of the sources reshapes the relational network that gives meaning to the preserved historic heritage, shifting the focus from the immateriality of the representations to the materiality of the sources. On the other hand, the interpretative synthesis made use of anthropological cathegories: within the continuous exchange between reality and imagination, the museum acts as a resignification device that, through the actions of gathering, organizing and displaying, modifies the relational network between the sources, therefore changing their meaning. The history museum enshrines a social pact with the public through the gift, and becomes the scenery of a rite of passage that accomodates the reaggregation of private memories into the public dimension of the history of the nation. Through this rite, the meaning of the war experience is turned from a traumatic event linked to mourning, into a rigeneration myth, thus continuing the action of the Risorgimento. In conclusion, the analysis of the Milan case has allowed us to highlight the specificity of relational networks, unravelling the different meanings hidden by the oleographic representation consistent with the “totalitarian memory” imposed by the Fascist regime. Lastly, the scientific approach emerging from such practices of public use of history has been identified in the production of instruments that allow one to account for the spatial movement of the sources during their museum history.

Full textThe theme of the vibrancy of civil society in the regions of the former Yugoslavia represents – especially when considered in connection with the many peace initiatives undertaken in the ‘90s – a topic that has been little studied in the literature both in Italy and in the Anglo-Saxon world, but also surprisingly, in the Balkans countries. This research work aims to demonstrate the existence of a strong tradition of civic activism in all former Yugoslavia Republics and in particular in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Especially female activism, from the ‘70s until today, has greatly contributed to the emergence of a new political subject that has taken an active part in the democratization and reconciliation processes in the context of post-war Bosnia and Herzegovina. The analysis of the forms and struggle methods of Neofeminizam represents a privileged and little used key for the understanding of broader dynamics inherent in the complex process of transition that Bosnia Herzegovina is forced to face today.
PAGLIARULO, CARLA. "I. Giordani, uomo di lettere e di cultura, e l'ideale di un «cristianesimo integrale»: alcuni carteggi indediti." Doctoral thesis, Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10280/1795.
Full textThis dissertation aims at setting Igino Giordani within the broader framework of the catholic cultural environment between the two world wars. It focuses on his proposal of an «integral Christianity» as a solution to the recession which threatened the fundamental values and principles of the economy, politics and culture during the 1920's and 1930's. This is the reason why the relationships between Giordani and many of his colleagues and cultural catholic institutions have been studied in depth. The work starts with a biography, underlining how Giordani's youth has been affected by the war and the experience as a soldier, up to his peaceful death, in 1980. His life shows how the consistency of his actions with his faith made him an influent personality in his working environments, to the point that the beatification process has begun. The research is based on Giordani's writings and on the previous historiography, but the most important source is constituted by a large number of archive documents. Particularly, Giordani's private correspondence has been very useful in understanding how he acted in order to support the engagement of the catholic intellectuals during the dark fascist age and his endless activity in order to build a new humanism. The work also focuses on the relationships between Giordani and two members of the Italian catholic world of the time: Giovanni Papini and Piero Bargellini.

Full textThe present work deals with the role of metaphorical thinking in the public communication of contemporary physics. We focus on the cognitive aspects: how to disseminate complicated formal physical concepts to a non-professional public maintaining the ‘correct’ disciplinary meaning, that is aiming at communication of ‘good physics’. The focus is on the nature of the explanation and the problem is how to evaluate the effectiveness of public scientific explanation of advanced physical topics to a non-professional audience. For this purpose we have looked for formal tools apt at analyzing the linguistic features of dissemination texts. We have drawn our attention to the role of analogical and metaphorical forms in the construction of ‘actual’ physical meanings because they obviously play an important role in introducing new concepts from previous ones when dealing with contemporary physics phenomena that are far from the ordinary perceptive domain. For the purpose of our investigation the conceptual metaphor perspective, within the framework of cognitive linguistics, appeared to be the most promising analytical tool. We investigate the research problem by analyzing a set of ‘relevant’ analogies and metaphors taken from popular science literature. In particular an analysis of a case study, within the framework of conceptual metaphor, is presented : Schrödinger’s analogy for ‘elementary particle’. The results of the analysis suggest that the conceptual metaphor perspective might be a potential tool both to assess the quality of analogical forms used in explanation of contemporary physics and to design new and ‘better’ analogies and metaphors. Besides, in a recursive process this analysis could help to focus on those meaningful cognitive aspects that characterize, and refine, a ‘complete’ and ‘correct’ physical concept. We think that fruitful results of inquiry might come from a deeper interdisciplinary approach between linguistics and physics.

Full textThe aim of this study is to understand how the concept of cultural heritage in Italy developed during the second half of the Twentieth Century. Therefore the analysis of historical and political events on the management, development and protection of cultural heritage is considered relevant. The attention is focused especially on the development of public policies in Italy between the late Sixties and the first half of the Seventies. This period can be defined as a summit of the debate and policies that in Italy began, after the Unification. The establishment of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and the first regional initiatives in the field of culture, are the central passages of this process. In this way, in the relationship between national and local organization appears a new attention to the development of cultural policies. Finally, for a European look in the evolution of cultural policies the case of France is considered peculiar for the creation of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, in the late Fifties.
