Abstract:

In the present thesis, I discuss the role of orality in translation, taking into account the problems arising while translating Russian folk epics. I investigate the meaning of orality in the context of folkloristic translation, trying to define a concept of oral poetry, and exploring its consequences for translation. In the first chapter, I try to identify the main differences between written literature and oral modes of expression, with special reference to folklore. La tesi intende dimostrare come le scienze cognitive e, in particolare, in questo caso, lo studio della working memory (WM), possono tracciare una netta distinzione fra oralità e scrittura. Applicando alla poesia epica greca quello che le scienze cognitive insegnano sulla WM, si dimostrerà che Iliade e Odissea ebbero una genesi e, per lungo tempo, una trasmissione completamente orali. My thesis is an in-depth analysis of the writings of three Italian migrant writers. Specifically, I discuss several of the different forms taken by orality and explore the relationship between orality and literacy, by analysing the work of three important figures: Kossi Komla Ebri (from Togo), Tahar Lamri (from Algeria) and Yousif Jaralla (from Iraq).
