Full textThe Earth's magnetic field undergoes strong temporal variabilities with characteristic periods as short as ten seconds (magnetospheric substorms triggering the polar aurora) and as long as a million years (geomagnetic reversals). Its temporal variations, although of very different origin and characteristics, affect the dynamics of the near-Earth space environment. The first part of this thesis is dedicated to the development of a new kinetic theory of instabilities in the magnetospheric tail which could explain the origin of substorms. Starting from a known theory of drift instabilities linked to the presence of a pressure gradient in the magnetotail, the proposed model includes trapped bouncing electrons which can enter into resonance with drift Alfvén instability modes if the density gradient in the tail becomes large. Taking this the bouncing motion into account significantly increases the growth rate of this universal instability. To try to validate this new model, an example of an auroral observation by the THEMIS mission (February 3, 2008) was analyzed. This event was chosen because it corresponds to an isolated auroral arc observed both by the All-sky cameras located on the ground and by the THEMIS satellites orbiting at 10 RE. This auroral activation seems to have been triggered by a sudden compression of the magnetospheric tail towards 10 RE significantly increasing the pressure gradient and causing significant fluctuations in the magnetic field. The orders of magnitude of the period and the growth rate of these oscillations are compatible with the dispersion curves deduced from the theoretical model.Second part of the thesis is devoted to changes in the radiation situation on Earth, the radiation belts and the terrestrial atmosphere during Earth's magnetic field reversal. We calculated the variations in galactic cosmic proton flux during a geomagnetic reversal to infer the radiation doses to which human population and astronauts could be exposed. The radiation background should increase by a factor of about three during the solar minimum period, and the elevated radiation regions should be redistributed and their areas will apparently increase due to the dipole field decrease, such radiation doses are not dangerous for humans and other living creatures. At the same time, for astronauts aboard the ISS orbiting at 400 km above the ground, during a reversal period a 14-fold radiation increase can be dangerous. Undoubtedly, in this case, a correction of the orbits of space vehicles would be required. Classical Störmer theory was generalized to the case of an axisymmetric superposition of dipole and quadrupole fields. [...]

Full textIn contrast to fast fashion, which is tussled with mass production and with short lead times, the slow fashion movement has arrived and been adopted by several actors on the fashion scene. Slow fashion wants to inspire with a sustainable and timeless wardrobe that is well thought out and stands strong against the fashion world's quick turns and then, contribute so the consumption is not increasing in quantity but in quality. The problem in sustainable consumption is that consumers often choose not to act on the basis of a sustainable perspective even though their intention says it. Research show that there is a gap between what consumers intend to do and what they actually do, so called attitude-behavior gap. The aim of this study is to determine characteristics and examine customer behavior in connection with shopping slow fashion. Contemporary research has provided support for the gap and its existence, in our study we want to develop that result into further analysis. We want to investigate the theory about the attitude-behavior gap in contrast to slow fashion and its customer behavior and the reasons behind a purchase. Why does a consumer choose to buy slow fashion products and what is the profile of a slow fashion consumer? To understand and interpret the empirical material from this study, a theoretical framework was designed around three different theories, the Attitude-behavior gap, the Consumer culture theory and the theory of needs identification. The result of this study shows that reasons such as identification, price, timelessness and high product quality affect the consumer to buy slow fashion products. Further, it shows how these reasons will get prioritized and planned in a consumer journey within the buying process. The planning itself is through all stages by every respondent and the insights will be discussed further. Slow fashion are therefore consumed with engagement and a strong price acceptance. The study will continue in Swedish

Full textDemands for sustainable mobility have become an increasingly important issue for local actors. Through city and traffic planning, the current unsustainable transport systems are going to become more sustainable. However, how to define sustainable mobility is disputed. Therefore, how planners in the Swedish municipality of Helsingborg define sustainable mobility makes an interesting case. This thesis examines how planners imagine sustainable mobility, who the sustainable traveler is, and what a sustainable city might look like. Theoretically the thesis combines an intersectional framework with a feminist planning theory and theories from Science and Technology Studies. The empirical material is based on in-depth interviews with sixteen planners, a focus group interview, and visual analyses of the planning documents the city of Helsingborg uses in planning for sustainable mobility. The analyses show that planners do not see the negative environmental impact of traveling as an argument which will persuade people to travel more sustainably. Instead, it is the possibility to construct sustainable mobility as fun, healthy, pleasurable, and practical that planners believe will persuade the inhabitants of Helsingborg to cycle or travel by bus more often. But not all travelers are likely to benefit from the positive values of sustainable mobility. To conclude, when planners imagine sustainable mobility, they imagine that it is good to travel the correct way for environmental reasons, but it is even greater to make independent travel choices, based on what modes of transport attract the most people.

Full textIn grades 4–6, students must undergo a progression to learn how rational numbers and numbers in decimal form are structured. Research has shown that there can be several difficulties and misconceptions about the area, including knowing the different place value of numbers. This study has been inspired by a previous study, conducted by Jarl and Johansson (2014). The aim of this study is to compare whether the same critical aspects identified in Jarl and Johansson (2014) studies also show up in other student groups. The subject of interest in this study was: What critical aspects can be identified in a grade 4 and a grade 5 around numbers in decimal form? In order to be able to answer the question, the students in this study have had to complete a worksheet with tasks linked to numbers in decimal form. Thereafter, qualitative interviews were conducted to gain a broader insight into what critical aspects the students have or have not distinguished. The choice of method in the study has elements of the theory of variation where the students need to see the necessary details (in the study called critical aspects). The results of the study show that all critical aspects that were identified in Jarl and Johansson's (2014) study were also critical in this study. However, a new critical aspect was identified: Students need to understand that numbers on each side of the decimal point together must become a number. Knowledge of critical aspects can be seen as special knowledge for teachers to know what can be misunderstood about the mathematical field. This knowledge cannot generalize, but it can be transferable so that a critical aspect can be identified in other student groups.
