Steyn, G. "The Lamu house - an East African architectural enigma." South African Journal of Art History, 2003. http://encore.tut.ac.za/iii/cpro/DigitalItemViewPage.external?sp=1000884.

Abstract:
Lamu is a living town off the Kenya coast. It was recently nominated to the World Heritage List. The town has been relatively undisturbed by colonization and modernization. This study reports on the early Swahili dwelling, which is still a functioning type in Lamu. It commences with a brief historical perspective of Lamu in its Swahili and East African coastal setting. It compares descriptions of the Lamu house, as found in literature, with personal observations and field surveys, including a short description of construction methods. The study offers observations on conservation and the current state of the Lamu house. It is concluded with a comparison between Lamu and Stone Town, Zanzibar, in terms of house types and settlement patterns. We found that the Lamu house is the stage for Swahili ritual and that the ancient and climatically uncomfortable plan form has been retained for nearly a millennium because of its symbolic value.

Since 1950 the average US home has grown from 1100 square feet to over 2600 square feet. During this same period the average family size shrunk by a person, meaning that per capita residential square footage has more than tripled in less than 60 years. What's more, if one looks at residential storage capacity as an indicator of consumption, its notable that the average citizen has 830% more storage space today than they did in the fifties. Paradoxically, in the last decade other forms of ownership have lost favor. The appetite for conventional ownership has been, in part, supplanted by a disinterest in maintenance and responsibility. Subscription services have begun to replace the conventional retail transaction. At first people rented the intangible and ephemeral but in the last few years they have begun renting things that would have seemed technologically impossible, or at a minimum improbable, ten years ago. This new mode of collective ownership represents a societal shift that architecture is lagging behind. This thesis aspires to use the spatial generosity of storage and the burgeoning sharing economy to re-imagine a suburb that promotes the sharing of rarely used objects & spaces amongst neighbors to foster community and reduce consumption.

Abstract:
The architect operates in both physical and spatial media. When in the presence of architectural form, an observer exists within the volume defined by surface and within the context of constructive material. At once the presence of architecture is imbued through spatial awareness, texture, sound, weight, light, shadow; material and volume modulate the senses to create the architectural experience. Montessori education is a pedagogy based on the development of a child's natural curiosity and intuition. The Guides lead rather than teach, encouraging the student to explore through activity. The student's intuitive exploration cannot be dictated or controlled by environment; the architect's role in education, therefore, is to work within his or her craft to create an "experiential architecture", one that utilizes the context of pedagogy, site, and material to develop a series of spaces to inspire within the individual a feeling unique to each. The architect must understand the nature of material, the way in which it wants to be used, to create an experience in which the architecture speaks of its making. The craft of building, then, becomes an architectural experience operating alongside the art of spatial composition. This school is the vehicle for exploring the dialogue between the spatiality and materiality of architecture.

the work that follows is a study in material and the nature of its construction. i chose a site that was rich in tradition of building, but chose to not mimic tradition. the arctic circle of norway has a tradition of stone and wood construction. the remote qualities of the site lead me to choose a house, of local stone and wood. the extreme conditions of the environment posed the challenges in design and construction. i did not test the limits of the stone, but let the stone do what is natural to it. i chose not to force the stone to be anything other than itself, and working with these natural tendencies to make the decisions of construction.

Abstract:

Many archaeologists have been intrigued by how often symbolic houses of varying forms are used on the burialgrounds of the Scandinavian Bronze Age. Some scholars even claim that to deal with the dead did not mean to set them apart from the world of the living during this period. Since several examples show that there seem to be an active connection between the ship-setting and different types of symbolic houses, this study seek to demonstrate and interpret how the ideology behind these symbols vary between three regionally different Swedish areas: Halland, Småland and Gotland. The purpose is to show that the way chosen to shape the symbols materially not only had fundamental impact on the organization of the burialground itself, but also on how the surrounding world came to comprenhend and use them. This study suggests that even though the special shapes of the graves and the gravefield itself can carry meaning, the materialization of the monuments can be interpreted as incorporated in a practice of remembrance in where the individual shaping of the grave most probably formed part of a greater story.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis of this project is to develop a language of architecture for the design of a rural house. Parameters for this language are specified through program, ideas about living in a country home, and the importance of integrating the building with its site. The parameters are reaffirmed through the materials and elements of architecture. In order to develop a cohesive language, four houses have been designed for four different sites. Each house implements the specified parameters in a manner appropriate to the setting of the surrounding landscape. The houses themselves become a transition between the inside and the outside and between the natural and the man-made. Thus this thesis is: Four Houses - A Language of Transition from Earth to Sky. Our experience-space is necessarily in conflict with the space of nature. The space that nature offers us rises above the ground and is oriented entirely towards the earth's surface. The contrast between the mass of the earth below and the space of the air above, which meet at the surface of the earth, is the primary datum of this (experience) space. Dom H. Abstract:
Global energy demand is increasing every year dramatically, which results global warming due to increased greenhouse gas emissions. So, to be environmentally friendly and sustainable, Sweden’s energy policy targets to reach 100 % renewable energy share in 2040. Already, Sweden achieved 50 % renewable energy share in 2012 which was targeted to achieve by 2020. Integration of solar heating system in residential sector, for space heating (SH) and domestic hot water (DHW), was one of the reasons for this achievement. Considerably, several numbers of solar heating systems were installed in houses until 2011. Thus, solar heating system could be a step towards to reach 2040s target. In 2011, detached Swedish house was installed with solar combi-system (SCS) which was designed to use 53% of solar energy. The main aim of this thesis is to analyze the thermal performance of SCS and correlation with its simulated system performance which is done in five steps.First step is the collection of measured data from the system for specific period one year from April 2019 to March 2020 and determined other unknown energy values in that data. In the second step, unknown data are calculated using scientific equations with information from users and reliable assumptions. Consequently, the analysis of measured data shows huge uncertainties. It follows to the third step as sensitivity analysis to enhance the assumption values. Thus, analyzed results are tabulated with reliable parameters and solar fraction (SF) of the measured data is calculated. In the fourth step, SH of the house is considered as reference to build a system model in Polysun simulation software, and the modelled results are verified with analyzed results. In the final step, system model is simulated by changing one-year weather profile to 10 years average weather profile. Thus, analyzed results and simulated results are compared to evaluate the performance. The real system has the SF of 52 % after sensitivity analysis whereas the simulated system showed the SF with percentage difference around 15 %.

Wolf, John William. "The Spatial Distribution of Ground Stone Tools as a Marker of Status Differentials in a Chinookan Plank House on the Lower Columbia River." PDXScholar, 1994. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/2898.

Full text
Abstract:
Social status was an integral part of the social structure of Northwest Coast societies. The presence of ranked social structures and household space based on rank is reported in the ethnographic literature. Archaeologists have long searched for independent and verifiable means to infer social structure from archaeological deposits. Burial goods have been used to identify status differences. Do other items of material culture also reflect such differences? The purpose of this study was to ascertain whether or not the distribution of certain tools recovered from a Chinookan plank house on the lower Columbia River paralleled the household residence location that was keyed to social status. Among Northwest Coast societies the household was the basic social and economic unit. Ground stone tools were selected for study because they include tools which were instrumental parts of a technology that depended upon highly organized and scheduled activities, i.e. fishing and house construction. If these tools were controlled by particular individuals or families within the household, their archaeological deposition might reflect social status differences. Two questions were asked in this study. (1) What is the correlation between the volume of sediment excavated and the number of ground stone artifacts recovered from the house? (2) What is the relationship between residence location and the density of ground stone artifacts recovered from the house? The ground stone artifacts were identified, classified and counted. Correlation coefficients between the volumes of sediment excavated and the number of ground stone artifacts recovered showed that the correlation was suspiciously weak, in general, and not correlated for fishing net weights. Some factor other than solely excavation volumes was affecting ground stone artifact counts. To answer the second question linear regressions were performed. They revealed that although location was to some degree a function of the density of ground stone artifacts, that relationship was weak at the .05 significance level. However, the relationship was stronger for fishing net weights. It is likely that there are multiple reasons for ground stone tool distributions and sites must be excavated with broad exposures in order to understand the relationship between residence location and artifact densities.

Morales, Teresa F. "The Last Stone is Just the Beginning: A Rhetorical Biography of Washington National Cathedral." Digital Archive @ GSU, 2013. http://digitalarchive.gsu.edu/communication_diss/42.

Full text
Abstract:
Washington National Cathedral sits atop Mt. St. Alban’s hill in Washington, D.C. declaring itself the nation’s cathedral and spiritual home for the nation. The idea of a national church serving national purposes was first envisioned by L’Enfant in the District’s original plan. Left aside in the times of nation building, the idea of a national church slumbered until 1893 when a group of Episcopalians petitioned and received a Congressional charter to begin a church and school in Washington, D.C. The first bishop of Washington, Henry Y. Satterlee, began his bishopric with the understanding that this cathedral being built by the Protestant Episcopal Church Foundation was to be a house of prayer for all people. Using Jasinksi’s constructivist orientation to reveal the one hundred year rhetorical history defining what constitutes a “national cathedral” within the narrative paradigm first established by Walter Fisher, this work utilizes a rhetorical biographical approach to uncover the various discourses of those speaking of and about the Cathedral. This biographical approach claims that Washington National Cathedral possesses an ethos that differentiates the national cathedral from the Cathedral of St. Peter and St. Paul even though the two names refer to the same building. The WNC ethos is one that allows a constant “becoming” of a national cathedral, and this ability to “become” allows for a rhetorical voice of the entity we call Washington National Cathedral. Four loci of rhetorical construction weave through this dissertation in the guiding question of how the Cathedral rhetorically created and how it sustains itself as Washington National Cathedral: rhetoric about the Cathedral, the Cathedral as rhetoric, the Cathedral as context, and Cathedral Dean Francis Sayre, Jr. as synecdoche with the Cathedral. This dissertation is divided into eight rhetorical moments of change that take the idea of a national church from L’Enfant’s 1791 plan of the City through the January 2013 announcement allowing same-sex weddings at the Cathedral and Obama’s second inaugural prayer service. The result of this rhetorical exploration is a more nuanced understanding of the place and how it functions in an otherwise secular society for which there is no precedent for the establishment of a national cathedral completely separated from the national government. The narrative strains that wind through Cathedral discourse create a braid of text, context, and moral imperative that ultimately allows for the unique construction of Washington National Cathedral, a construction of what defines “national” created entirely by the Cathedral.

Abstract:
The Iron age settlement of Buttle Änge is located on the island of Gotland (Sweden), in the inland south of the medieval town Visby. The Stonehouse foundations on the site have been the focus for the University of Uppsala Campus Gotland archeological excavation since 2013. This paper aims to present a study of the pottery found in the Stonehouse foundations and the spaces between the houses from the excavations 2014-2016. The intention is to map and comprehend the Buttle ceramics. In order to accomplish the intended purpose and questions, I have defined and categorized the ceramics in different ceramic types based on color and minerals alterations in the clay, as well as other defining features to investigate the craft and the archaeological structures. The ceramic ware is evaluated by certain restrictions intended for obtaining a relative dating for the houses, which can provide an increased insight into the locations relationships to other Stonehouse foundations. The houses display many similarities with both foundations and construction, the difficulty has been to establish a chronology.   The focus has been on ceramics rather than on the Stonehouse foundations, which has resulted in 21 different ceramic types, based on color and minerals variations in the clay. In the documentation of the material, both archaeological and handicraft markers have been considered. This is where the pottery is both a source of information for the archaeologists, but also a craft that possesses information. By trying to put the ceramics into its context, it becomes possible to get an understanding of how it has changed and developed. The pottery has then been compared with Vallhagar (Fröjel, Gotland), to see if the material from Buttle is of the same style and shape. Different markers have since been compared with the Vallhagar material, which has given deeper understanding for a chronology, but also that there are similarities that indicate that there has been a know-how to produce the ceramic. Although there are minor details that have changed in the vessel's markers, it may be crucial for the chronology. The change may have been for practical reasons, but also for social reasons, and we need to know the significance of the change before we can see the chronological value. The study of pottery can hopefully give a wide-ranging understanding of the Stonehouse foundations timelines and the iron age people’s daily life.

Abstract:
This study is about archaeological knowledge production. It is also about what kind of impact such knowledge may have on an antiquarian/archaeological practice as well as on society as a whole. The work focuses broadly on Stone Age archaeology and specifically on the middle-Mesolithic Age in the county of Blekinge in the South East of Sweden. Until the late 1990’s, large-scale archaeological excavations in this region were rare. In particular, there were significant gaps in early- and middle-Mesolithic archaeology of other regions. In particular, the study brings up the relationship with the defined Kongemose culture's settlements in Southern Scandinavia. From a knowledge perspective the study discusses how different kinds of methodological practices are important for both archaeology and society, to be able to see and understand a more complete historical picture. Based on this, the focus shifts the role of museums within regional archaeology. The study here argues for a more strategically executed dissemination and presentation of archaeological knowledge towards different stakeholders.

Abstract:
There is something about horses. Something that through the ages has made people see these animals as something special, almost magical. The use, care and murder of these animals contain information of high value for archaeology. Information that can be hard to find in other materials. These animals and their final resting places bear traces of the emic values and inner worlds of the people that once put them there. People’s thoughts, values and traditions can be visualised from the bodies of the horses that once served them, at times gave their lives for them. The purpose of this essay is to study possible regional similarities and differences in the tradition relating to living and dead horses. This is done through osteological analysis of skeletal remains mainly of horse (Equus) and analysis of the archaeological contexts. The initial hypothesis was that the reason for a somewhat scarce representation of skeletal remains of horse in some places, perhaps relates to how the people in these places handled the bodies of the horses due to tradition and norms within their society. The study also sets out to examine what has made up the foundation for an interpretation of sacrifice and ritual, problematise the application of the concept of sacrifice as well as how archaeology as a research field has been affected and influenced by these notions.A delamination was made to Iron Age since the use of horses for man’s benefit and enjoyment was well established by that time. Geographically a delamination has been made to the islands of Gotland, Stora Karlsö and Öland with the intention of creating a distinct island perspective, where peculiar and unique traditions as well as more general similarities are allowed the same presuppositions. For this reason, three materials from the chosen geographical areas have been subject to osteological analysis; Stormyr in Bäl Parish on Gotland, Norderhamn in Eksta Parish on Stora Karlsö and a material from Löt Parish on Öland. The results show a general pattern in handling as well as in how both living and dead horses were perceived in the studied locations. However, it is also clear that regional differences occur in these areas. No osteological markers that can indicate any difference in type between the analysed horses have been found. There is however some trauma that indicates that some horses may have been used as workforce and means of transportation for example. The result also show that several factors in the represented cases could have affected the basis of estimation that led to a ritualistic interpretation, for example the frequency of finds, the extent of exploitation of an area, education, the development of methodology over time, etc.

This dissertation is inscribed into a zone of interval between critics and literary creation, that is, between the critical discourse about a work, Before the past: silence comes from Araguaia (2012), by my authorship, and the potential creation of another work - Stone house. Its objective is to speculate possible points of view for the narrator of a potential narration stablished around what is to be said by another one, already published: the novel Before the past, inscribed in the post-dictatorial Brazilian literature. Our methodological strategy is structured around two cores. The first one embraces the analysis of Before the past: the silence which comes from Araguaia, which was based on the concepts of narrator, vestige and threshold according to Wayne Booth and Walter Benjamin studies. The second one is centered on the work in progress - Stone house and has as conceptual axis the notions of archive, act and potency came from Michel Foucault e Giorgio Agamben studies. From this context, emerges the proposition of giving ear and trying to identify, describe and analyze Before the past narrative voice procedures, departing from a site where we are settled simultaneously as a researcher and a reader who scrutinizes her own work. In Part II, the architectural mechanisms of Stone house are investigated by a reflexive voice, which mixes first and third persons that narrate the creation research construction in the form of a writer s book , in the light of the book Passages, by Walter Benjamin. As a result, we delineated a sort of literary cartography of proto-book, which is Stone house, based on collecting and organizing archives made of documental vestiges, memories, audiovisual interviews, photographs, written and oral narratives about Brazilian military dictatorship, and the disappearing and death through a fragile narration which tries to keep itself in a threshold between said and non said, creation and (un)creation

The Master's thesis analyses process of prising methods and analyses sources which we need to compile a ways of prising. These are most important things to know, when we want to compare ways of prising. There are ten houses in this work from Kroměříž and surroundings. The main target of master's thesis is to ratify and to explain that location of houses and their surroundings are the most importatnt. These two points of view influenced price and salableing of houses. There is a comparison of ways of prising houses at the end of work

Abstract:
The subject of this master thesis is a design of wine house which comes together with restaurant and accommodation in Strazovice near Kyjov. It includes design study and all the detailed drawings of the building. The building is designed with three services - winery, restaurant and accommodation. Winery is divided into separate rooms for wine processing, finishing and wine aging, also storage, distribution and sale of wine. Canteen service includes kitchen with accessories, restaurant with dining, separated lounge, vaulted cellar and room for degustation. Lounge, cellar and degustation room is primary determined for different corporate events, conferences, weddings, family events and others. For building were chosen descending lands at the edge of Strazovice.. The main reason for this decision is the view that this place provides because of its higher position. Also this village is a part of region, for which wine production is typical. The shape of the object is rectangular and consists of three floors. Two upper floors are receding with comparison to the first floor. This formed a part of terrace which is connected with the oval part on pillars. Basement is situated completely below ground, only the south side is partly uncovered. Construction is made of reinforced concrete. Ground floors are with ventilated frontage. Frontage of the first floor is covered with wooden cladding, and frontage of the second floor is covered with plaster. Vertical constructions are made of lime-sand blocks and horizontal constructions are reinforced concrete. The roof is built of wooden trusses with arched upper part. On the roof there are installed photovoltaic panels for electricity which is used in the building. Rainwater is held in tank, servers as a water supply for the building. Wastewater is depurated in small sewage plant which is further conducted into the building. Other wastewater is captured in the sump. Projection of the winery emphasis, inter alia, on static and

Abstract:

Vape Store, a French private firm selling electronic cigarettes and derived products is getting prone to online cheaper competition. The company makes most of its revenue through outsourced e-liquids and is wondering if producing them in-house could lower sale prices without lowering its margins. The methodology used to evaluate this project against the outsourcing solution was the Discounted Cash Flow analysis. The Comparable Company Analysis as well as CAPM we reused to estimate Vape Store’s beta and cost of equity. Results show that producing e-liquids in-house is more profitable than outsourcing and that the company should launch the project.

Most of researches regarding the house prices model in recent years are applied with Hedonic Price Method, Artificial Neural Network and Back-propagation Neural Network, and have obtained quite significant results. The time-dependent house prices are often discussed from the angle of structural transformation because they (including characteristic factors) often change accompanying the time and space. Besides, the prices of town house and store house vary largely, so the price prediction (evaluation) is difficult. This research utilizes the data of house price index in East District of Tainan City from 1996 to 2007. Firstly, it probes into respective price prediction model of town house and store house through Time Series Analysis. This method is mainly applied to hedonic price model coefficient and the prediction of average house transaction price. Finally, this research compares results derived from the model with those of conventional hedonic price model. Two models are acquired in this research including the time series model of annual average transaction price (Model 1) and the time series model of Hedonic Price Coefficient (Model 2); Model 1 only predicts the annual average transaction price and Model 2 focuses on the prediction in respect of a single house. Results from the case study reveal that: 1. Comparing with the actual average transaction price of 2007, Model 1 acquires the best prediction for town house and the deviation value is 5.937%; Model 2 acquires the best prediction for store house and the deviation value is 7.302%. Both deviation values are better than those derived from the conventional hedonic price model in respect of town house and store house (14.847% and 49.864% respectively). 2. Conducting the prediction in respect of actual transactions in 2007 including 204 cases of town house and 46 cases of store house, Model 2 (MAPE=26.888%) is better than the conventional hedonic price model (MAPE=32.143%) as far as the average deviation of town house is concerned; Model 2 (MAPE=30.522%) is also better than the conventional hedonic price model (MAPE=66.375%) in point of the average deviation of store house.

The folk architectures are as consequences of the conformity and interaction of mankind to their environments. More than ten aboriginal tribes distributed in Taiwan island, which is not vast but is intricate in ecological environment, have produced their special styles of traditional housing.Among them, the slabstone house, built mainly by rock slate, was very unique among the worldwide folk building and showed the appearance of crossing over the ethnicities. The geological structure of Taiwan island has a decisive causal relationship with this phenomenon. On the bases of ecological environment, natural and social condition, traces of population development, and previous document of folk architecture, the site selecting of the slabstone villages and their relationships to geological environments were surveyed in this thesis by way of deepenning field investigation from the view of formation of Taiwan island, influence of plate movement and distribution of geological structure. Then, the evidences concerning the adaptation of structure of slabstone housing in each village to the topography and natural conditions and social customs were conducted. This study focused mainly at north-Paiwan tribe. Collapsed mountain and forest and desert villages were generally seen during this field investigation. It is thought that the aboriginal's traditional building is quite difficult to conserve owing to the fragile ecological environment of Taiwan and the getting dramatic changes of climates. Both aspects of physics and social conclusions were conducted from the research to offer the governments at all levels, academy and cultural administrative unit. On one hand, the interdynamics certainty of human with nature was confirmed from the correlation study of slabstone housing with geological environment. On the other hand, from the artificial standpoint, what should bring to the people from the precious culture assets of slabstone house and the way to face the future were reconsidered.

Several old houses more than one hundreds years old and a street ever bringing prosperity carry heritage and memories for different generations, and they still stand tall in the same places after a century. These buildings reveal the care of Hakka ancestors when they constructed the houses and street, just like spatial conversations with their descendents for passing down the thrifty, simple, and careful Hakka sprit. This is a revolution of cultural aesthetics, in which design and concepts were employed to change original visual images. Century-old buildings and street were restored, and the perspective of cultural and creative community development was applied to the creation of new retrospective elegance. In addition, the local culture was inherited, images relevant to the old houses and street were planned, innovative and cultural marketing concepts were extended, and the nostalgic cultural atmosphere was continued. The researchers used innovative design concepts in which their own old shops were employed as brands to subvert the tradition while the original culture was still kept. Furthermore, they combined with the nearby old houses to enhance the cultural and creative atmosphere, provide good artistic space, and culturally construct century-old shops and houses. They promoted a local conservation campaign for old houses, bestowed new life and spatial value upon the old houses, and promote cultural restoration for beautiful Jhutian Township. The historical memories as well as the humane activities and environment which are consistent so far should not be ignored. Cultural innovation helps the local residents agglomerate the community awareness, build the community identity, provide local employment opportunities, and develop the local economy. The local features were employed to increase the value of products and services, and they were regarded as the basis of brand identity to differentiate the products and services from other products and services provided by unknown factories or companies in the market. When the cultural and historical background of a place is developed into a local cultural brand, cultural and creative industrial or business activities and narrative design concepts will attract more nonlocal tourists to experience the simplicity of the local culture.

This study was based on the concept of “tourists’ gazes” which was raised by Urry, and did a case study at the Dona tribe in order to explore the culture of symbolic gaze in the stone houses. Three social roles:the feedback among government, residents and tourists are discussed in my thesis. The government strongly promoted the idea of eco-tourism in Dona. Besides, how local residents’ attitude was presented to tourists and what cultural features tourists have gazed on the stone houses in Dona are very important. Maolin National Scenic Area and the district affairs office adopted a series of tourist policy and planned to reconstruct the stone houses. The government built the sighseeing space for the tourists by marketing methods. In the development of tourism industry, tourists began to concern "Authenticity" issues and contradictional phenomenon on the stone houses in Dona. However, as for local residents, supporting policies, economic benefits and life was the core of the problem. This study surveyed and analyzed the semiotics to those tourists who visited Dona. In this case, the tourists conscioused the procedure of sighseeing by collecting the distinct symbols.Through this study, we can know that the three parts actually constructed an image to the stone houses in Dona.

Aboriginal culture has played an important role in Taiwan’s historical development, with diverse cultural assets imbedded among each of the different ethnic groups. This study looks at the Kochapongan community slate houses, which are cultural preservations of the Rukai People. The Kochapongan community is located on the north bank of South Ailiao River in the southwestern corner of Wutai Township. In 1987, in coordination with the national government policy to “modernize the mountain area”, a large-scale relocation of the village took place, moving it to New Haocha (north bank river terrace of South Ailiao River). However, over the years it was ravaged by many natural disasters and the remaining portion of the culturally traditional New Haocha was eventually buried by a mudslide. This catastrophe was the beginning of cultural loss. The Haocha People residing in Majia Township’s Lina Village were separated from their traditional environment and their life-style began to assimilate with the Han Chinese. This study looks at the assimilated tribe’s people’s attitudes towards preserving Stone Slab Houses and their emotional connection to the preserved cultural assets, extending to restoration and reuse of monuments. It organizes the views of tribe’s people with respect to the willingness to restore, the method of restoration, the transmission of restoration techniques, and the post-revitalization development of the traditional slate houses area. It also looks at whether or not the tribe’s people are willing to take part in the processes. Based on the results of this study the following recommendations are made: priority should be given to the restoration of the roads; additionally, questions related to the preservation and transmission of restoration techniques, the scale of the restoration, the conflict between culture and tourism, and gaps in understanding with respect to techniques for restoring historical sites should each be addressed.

The thesis takes traditional Pescadores architecture, The Ridge Head building, as the research model to study on the utilization of stone masonry in Huachai Village. By means of field observation and Cloud Point, A three-dimensional coordinate system, the architectural features of Huacha in different periods could be inferred. The study builds on field observation collaborated with the collection of historical documents to be the first step. In doing so, it discusses the manufacturing, trading and logistics of stone masonry of Huachai Village. To analyze the architectural features of Huachai is the next step. However, the loss of senior craftsmen makes it difficult to see the whole picture of the original building method. Only pieces of the puzzle could be collected from the story told by the offspring. Therefore, field observation, interviews with the craftsmen in Dong-Ann Village and other areas of Pescadores contribute to help understanding better the immemorial architectural style built in stone. The information collected is later classified into four categories for analysis. Stonework as the main category is sorted into four sub-categories for further discussion, including foundation, floor, wall and openings. Each sub-category is carefully studied on the style, building method, material selection and the historical development of its architectural structure. Classification mechanism is properly adjusted according to the structure of the buildings, selection of materials and capability of the components. Finally, to overcome the limitation of historical documents, Cloud Point and field observation are employed to support the construction of visual images of the architecture. With the research fulfilled, it achieves the goal of the study in concluding the characteristics of the architectural structure of Huchai Village in diverse periods. And based on the findings, it is possible to analyze the age of restoration of a stone house as well as the regional distribution of the Village.

The result of this thesis suggests that we can make use of community building to combine conservation of historic scenery, redelopment of local industry, maintenance of traditional sociality construction, promotion of environment quality and inheritance of culture activity. From now on, the redevelopment of ku nga da vane settlement should base on promoting environment quality to attract people. Perhaps the redevelopment would cause some community conscious problems between early and late residents, so we have to keep community identification by maintenance of traditional sociality construction and inheritance of culture activity. At last, planning authorities should draw up specific district project in order to achieve the conservation objective. With the rapid transform of social structure and economic development, a lot of historical sites and towns of Taiwan have already suffered from merciless destruction. Most ancient buildings and community places have been gradually replaced by towering modern building. The ku nga da vane settlement with more than three hundred years Taiwanese history also could not escape from the destruction of modern urban development and builds. Nowadays, the landscapes of ku nga da vane buildings combine with both new and old buildings, conflicts between chaos landscapes, and the losses of traditional humanity spaces. With this situation, ku nga da vane is increasing similar to other towns in Taiwan. The unique strength of ku nga da vane in his historical landscape has gradually lost.

ABSTRACT For comfort, human beings have been constantly looking for natural-way circulation to present on construction until now. Though the machine-aid circulation is quite progressive, the natural-way circulation is still the goal that architects and engineers have been achieved, for circulation is a part of a construction. A good design should cover both natural-way circulation and comfort. During the hot seasons, people blow themselves with fans or walk outdoor to a cooler and windy space to cool themselves down. The comfort comes from balancing the heat of the skin surface which was reached by the air circulation. The previous ways of lowing the body temperature is still not as effective as having natural-way circulation in the construction that is maintaining a certain circulation indoor to offer a comfortable working environment. This research is about traditional and modern stone-plate houses. Independent stone-plate houses are elected to do the experiment. The experiment is held in both summer and winter in the selected stone-plate houses to understand the indoor environment quality of the traditional and modern stone-plate houses, to establish the data of PMV and PPD of the traditional and modern stone-plate house, to characterize the exceptional style of the construction landscape of the stone-plate house of native tribe, and constant persevere of the traditional culture and reestablish the feature of the native traditional construction. From result the experiment, we get the following conclusions: First, no matter the indoor temperature, the indoor PMV, PPD, ACH, and Q, the traditional stone-plate house fits in the indoor comfort rank in PMV and PPD, and the traditional stone-plate house also exceeds the modern stone-plate house. The traditional stone-plate house suits as human beings long-term living environment. Second, the traditional stone-plate house selected the natural stones and woods as the constructing materials to build the house. The base is built of stone plates. It,s easy for water to get through. The stones can be reused even the house is dismantled. This will not produce the discarding garbage. The indoor PMV, PPD, ACH, and Q, the traditional stone-plate house fits in the indoor comfort rank in PMV and PPD. It also reaches the four big a target group and four index of construction. Finally, on constantly reserving the culture, the traditional stone-plate house exceeds the modern stone-plate house in the indoor PMV and PPD. The stone-plate house is the unique construction. It can characterize the local culture. So the traditional stone-plate house needs to be popularized and preserved. Key Words:Stone-Plate House、Northern Pai-Wan、Thermal environment、Air-Exchange Rate

Cultural and creative industries in Taiwan have just started; thus, more representative and successful examples are needed, and they are qualified to provide successful experience of management and key factors. Tainan is regarded as a cultural ancient metropolis, and it possesses an abundant of cultural heritage. Through discovering and interpreting the local cultural properties, Tainan displays amazing potential of cultural and creative industries. Especially, the reuse of idle space leads a trend. As a result, this study selects well-known, representative examples――Former Xinhua District Offices, Anping Tree House and Hayashi Department Store as subjects and it implements qualitative analysis through Resource-based Theory, Resource Dependence Theory and STP, compare the similarity and difference, in order to explore the successful pattern and key factors in the field of local cultural and creative industries. At last, for theoretical contribution, we argue that local cultural and creative industries should focus on their own cultural properties and integrate their inside and outside resources to refine the value of cultural properties, so as to create value successively and permanently. For the practical contribution, local cultural and creative industries should profoundly explore their cultural connotations, attempt to expand and extend the cultural value and refer to the successful pattern that is similar in nature, which are beneficial to create higher economic value.
