Budayan, Cenk. "Strategic Group Analysis: Strategic Perspective, Differentiation And Performance In Construction." Phd thesis, METU, 2008. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/12609676/index.pdf.

Abstract:
The aim of strategic group analysis is to find out if clusters of firms that have a similar strategic position exist within an industry or not. In this thesis, by using a conceptual framework that reflects the strategic context, contents and process of construction companies and utilising alternative clustering methods such as traditional cluster analysis, self-organizing maps, and fuzzy C-means technique, a strategic group analysis was conducted for the Turkish construction industry. Results demonstrate that there are three strategic groups among which significant performance differences exist. Self-organising maps provide a visual representation of group composition and help identification of hybrid structures. Fuzzy C-means technique reveals the membership degrees of a firm to each strategic group. It is recommended that real strategic group structure can only be identified by using alternative cluster analysis methods. The positive effect of differentiation strategy on achieving competitive advantage is widely acknowledged in the literature and proved to be valid for the Turkish construction industry as a result of strategic group analysis. In this study, a framework is proposed to model the differentiation process in construction. The relationships between the modes and drivers of differentiation are analyzed by structural equation modeling. The results demonstrate that construction companies can either differentiate on quality or productivity. Project management related factors extensively influence productivity differentiation whereas they influence quality differentiation indirectly. Corporate management related factors only affect quality differentiation. Moreover, resources influence productivity differentiation directly whereas they have an indirect effect on quality differentiation.

Abstract:
In Strategic International Human Resource Management (SIHRM), the human resource function is actively involved in the strategic activities of the firm. While the idea holds promise as a useful response to global competition, previous research has provided limited supporting empirical evidence. Specifically, few studies have sought to equate certain outcomes with the degree of SIHRM practiced across various types of international firms. By separating firms into categories such as multidomestic, global, and hybrid, and by classifying SIHRM according to the degree of integration with strategic planning, a clearer picture could emerge as to the relationship between firm and SIHRMtype. To that end, top strategic executives, such as CEOs, and top HRM executives from eighty four U.S. based firms were surveyed regarding their firm type, the degree of SIHRM practiced, and certain outcomes such as amount of expatriate training and expatriate failure. Additionally, financial results were obtained to determine performance of various firms. Results indicated that while many companies choose a highly integrated formof SIHRM, there is no significant relationship between firm type and SIHRMtype. Additionally, there was no association detected between SIHRMtype and expatriate training and expatriate failure. Finally, there was no significant difference infinancialperformance between firms with the most integrated type of SIHRMand firms with less integrated versions. Interestingly, the HRMprofessionals were more likely to equate their firms with the most integrated types of SIHRMthan were other managers. This may mean that the relationship between HRM and strategic planning is often one of perception. A model of the relationships between SIHRM, firm type, HRM activities, and outcomes is proposed, along with suggestions for future research and limitations of the study.

Abstract:
Thesis (MBA (Business Management))--University of Stellenbosch, 2007.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Fidentia became an active player in the South African financial services industry in 2005, only a few years since its inception. This was achieved through aggressive take-overs and a favourable public image boosted by employing known sports personalities and sponsorships of various sports teams, charities and other events. The Fidentia group seemed to go from strength to strength under the leadership of Mr. Arthur Brown assisted by his senior management team of which none more prominent than Mr. Graham Maddock. The group’s main business is Fidentia Asset Management (FAM) which, during 2003 and 2004, secured two of the biggest clients in Fidentia’s history. In 2003 the Transport Education Training Authority (TETA) invested R200,3 million and R1,2 billion of the Mineworkers Provident Fund was placed under its’ management in 2004. The Fidentia group was placed under final curatorship on 27 March 2007, based on reports by the then provisional curators and the Financial Services Board which claimed that their inspectors could not trace R680 million of almost R2 billion under the management of FAM. The analysis of the unfolding Fidentia case will show that without proper strategic planning and management, as well as adherence to suggestions on good corporate governance stakeholders’ risk exposure can be increased. NOTE: The information available till end August was analysed.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Fidentia was teen 2005 ‘n aktiewe speler in die Suid-Afrikaanse finansiële dienste industrie, slegs ‘n paar jaar nadat dit gestig is.

This thesis studies an emerging web phenomenon - online opinion aggregator. The thesis first defines what an opinion aggregator is and then applies a holistic framework to analyze the opinion aggregator to understand its key characteristics. The research then zooms in on one of the most popular opinion aggregators, the product review aggregator, to understand its market opportunities, enabling technologies, and business models. The author samples nine product review aggregators based on the content type, the aggregation method, and the relationship with customers. An experiment of comparing product review ratings is also conducted to reveal issues and challenges faced by the product review aggregators. The conclusion of this research is that most review aggregators are still in their startup stage in which they are accumulating product review content and building a bigger user base. Many key enabling technologies such as natural language parsing and web text mining are still in the early stage of the technology evolution. Most of product review aggregators rely on advertising to sustain their businesses. Although aggregating product reviews is a good starting point, an aggregator needs to move towards a more comprehensive product research platform in order to grow its business. This research can be used by product review aggregators that want to gain a holistic understanding of the opinion aggregation eco-system and want to formalize their business strategies. The research also offers insights into the critical success factors of product review aggregators and can be helpful for anyone who wants to start a review aggregation-based business. The market researchers can benefit from this research with a better understanding of opinion aggregators and opportunities presented to the aggregators.

Abstract:

Duursema, Lukas. "Analysis of the strategic planning process with specific reference to the operational implementation of strategic plans in Siemens-IC." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/51587.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2000.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Strategic planning and the successful implementation of strategic plans moulds organisations and make them successful in the long term. Siemens-Information and Communications (IC) has realised the need for strategic planning to remain competitive and successful. The implementation of the strategic planning process at Siemens-IC has created the opportunity to do that, but as many have realised, this can only be achieved when the strategic plans have been successfully implemented. The strategic planning process at Siemens-IC is not dysfunctional, in many instances it has achieved a great deal. The problem is therefore not how to fix the strategic planning process, but rather how to improve the implementation of the strategic plans. The successful implementation of strategic plans is summarised by outlining the process used to derive the strategy, the governing principles for defining the strategy, communication of the strategy and organisational accountabilities. These components are supported by a strategy review process that is embedded in the organisational process and improves the implementation of strategic plans. If all of this occurs in the absence of a culture which promotes innovation, creativity and strategic planning as part of all managers' functions, it is doomed to failure. The strategic plans in Siemens-IC could be implemented better if the formulation of strategy is seen as part of the line managers' functions. This would provide the opportunity to improve communication, understanding and implementation of the strategy throughout the organisation right down to the lowest levels. It is also proposed that the implementation of strategic plans should be improved by linking the formulation with the implementation of the strategy. This would ensure that what has been envisioned will also be implemented. The last overall consideration for Siemens-IC is to create an organisational culture of learning. Managers at all levels should realise that formulating and implementing strategy is an ongoing journey that should be managed, and where failures and successes should be seen as opportunities to learn and improve. Achieving a culture of learning would improve the organisation's overall success with the implementation of strategic plans.

Abstract:
This research evaluated longitudinal pavement marking performance and developed useful degradation models for paint pavement markings which can help transportation agencies meet the pending FHWA minimum retroreflectivity requirements. The impacts of several important factors (such as directionality, pavement type and roughness) on marking retroreflectivity were evaluated. With a large dataset in hand, we determined whether these factors had significant impacts on marking retroreflectivity. Paint pavement marking centerline retroreflectivity values measured in the direction of paint striping were found to be significantly higher than the values measured in the opposite direction. The mean values of the retroreflectivity measurements collected on the plant mixed pavements were found to be significantly larger than the values collected on the bituminous surface treatment (BST) pavements. Image processing techniques were used to analyze paint pavement marking surface glass bead density. Bead density values were found to have a positive correlation with marking retroreflectivity measurements. Higher glass bead density led to higher marking retroreflectivity. The research also compared existing marking retroreflectivity degradation models. A linear mixed effects model (LMEM) was selected as most appropriate for the paint marking retroreflectivity data. LMEMs were established for paint pavement markings based on the data collected in NC. The research outcomes can help transportation agencies have a better understanding of paint pavement marking performance, which can lead to cost savings by maximizing the marking service lifecycles.

Abstract:
With the advent of digital imaging technology, the options available to consumers in consumer imaging have increased tremendously. From image capture through image processing and output, many options have emerged; however, the relative environmental impacts of these different options are not clear cut. Simplistically, one might say that the use of a digital camera has a lesser environmental burden than the use of a reloadable film camera because the image produced as a result of using the digital camera avoids chemicals in film developing. However, digital cameras require electronics and computers that need energy; and, energy production is one of the contributors to greenhouse gasses like CO2. Assessment of the environmental impacts of these different options can help provide feedback to decision makers and insights that will help reduce environmental impact through product system design. One tool that has been used to relate environmental impacts with functions provide to consumers through products or services is Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). LCA, which has been standardized by the International Standards Organization (ISO) in ISO14000, is used here to evaluate both traditional film and digital imaging systems. Data from publicly available databases and both external and internal Eastman Kodak Company studies were utilized to develop LCA modules for the different processes involved. Product and service business models are explored for both technologies through ten different imaging and output scenarios. The functional unit used is the capture, processing and output of one 4 x6 image. Four impact categories (energy use, greenhouse emission, water use and waste generation) across four life cycle phases (upstream, distribution, use, and end of life) are explored for the ten scenarios. LCA is also evaluated as a tool to help facilitate strategic level environmental performance issues with both new and established business activities. Sensitivity analysis is also performed to evaluate the impact of assumptions made in the course of the assessment and comments are made regarding the effectiveness of LCA for strategic assessment and product service strategies in lowering environmental impact. Results indicate that the lowest impact scenarios are Digital Capture to LCD Display for Greenhouse Emissions and Energy Use and Film Capture to Wholesale Print for Water Use and Waste Generation. Highest impacts were seen for Greenhouse Emissions in the Film Capture to Retail Print scenario. In the Energy Use and Water Use category, the Digital Capture to CRT Computer Display was the highest scenario. For Waste Generation, the Digital Capture to Inkjet Print was the highest impact scenario.

The manufacturing and development of Dynamic Random Access Memory (DRAM) is a large global industry that involves various advanced technologies and significant capital expenditures. The industry has seen tremendous developments over the past few decades allowing for rapidly improving product performance. The progression of the industry has also been a fantastic model for demonstrating the basic laws of economics, including the economies of scale and consolidation in high fixed-cost businesses. The first part of this thesis provides a general overview of the DRAM industry, including a brief history of the product and an overview of the essential technologies and its manufacturing process. In addition, the key business drivers of the industry are discussed and important lessons from two pivotal stages in the industry, the rise of Japanese manufacturers and the ascension of Korean producers, are presented. The second part of this thesis provides a case study on one major industry participant - Elpida Memory Inc. A company overview is first given, and then recommendations regarding the Company's future strategy and direction are presented.

Mobile money services are spreading rapidly in many developed and developing countries across the world. Whereas in developed economies these new services are seen as a way to make current services more functional and convenient, in the developing world their relevance in the process providing access to financial services to the poorest segments of the population is welcomed and encouraged by the international development community. The spread of mobile money is seen as a catalyst for financial inclusion and the speed at which these services become available will be partly due to the stakeholders' capacity for implementing them. Mobile money projects have new been launched across many developing nations, targeting the opportunity of a common phenomenon: a gap between the high penetration of mobile services and the low penetration of financial services. The measure of success of those ventures has been mixed, with hallmark cases rapidly reaching over 10% of the population and other cases being discontinued or re-launched in the face of failure. The history of the development of such projects highlights several lessons for current and future stakeholders. First, an industry context with high demand and low-enough penetration of financial services, together with a thriving and innovative telecommunications industry seems to be conductive to success. Second, a favorable regulatory environment in which regulators allow telecom operators, banks and small and medium-sized companies to experiment with different models to provide mobile money to the masses is advisable for avoiding roadblocks for growth. Third, success will partly depend on the service provider's capacity to develop a far-reaching ecosystem of merchants, agents, banks and other partners in order to achieve ubiquity. Lastly, services with strong network effects such as domestic remittances can deliver faster growth than others, seeding the scale needed to offer more complex financial services over mobile money platforms.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: With each passing year and the intensification of competition, strategic management becomes more important. In an ever-changing business environment, management, and especially strategic management, becomes increasingly crucial. This empirical study attempts to conduct a literature study of strategic management in order to develop a strategic planning model. A simplified model is proposed as a framework on which a practical application can be made. Boland PKS, a division of the Board of Executors, has been elected as the organisation to whose strategic management the model will be applied. Boland PKS will be applied to the model in an effort to accept or reject the following statement of the problem: The author is of the opinion that strategic planning is not being applied in Boland PKS.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The electricity crisis presently affecting Africa is forcing govenments in the region to increasingly consider independent power developers as a means to help mitigate the imbalance between the demand and the supply of electricity. However, the success of this initiative will depend entirely upon governments' ability to create an environment that is conducive to developing private electricity generation plants. This paper focuses on Africa's independent power producer (IPP) market, evaluating the context in which it would develop. It also assesses how issues such as the complexity and uncertainty surrounding power purchase agreements, the current level of electricity tariffs, the incompleteness of power sector refonn as well as risk-sharing agreements between IPPs and the utilities are affecting the electricity market in the region. The analysis has broader implications for potential independent power projects as it not only questions the longterm sustainability of these but also provides strategic recommendations as to how to best maneuver in an environment fraught with major challenges.

The wide range of the petroleum industry's products as well as the varied value of these products coupled with the global nature of the petroleum industry presents both challenges and opportunities within the petroleum supply chain. It is along this supply chain that challenges for creating value for the customer exist as well the opportunities for reaching this goal. Value chain analysis methodology has been hailed as being capable to lend itself to process improvement challenges faced along supply chains. To achieve this objective, a case study method was used to collect and analyse data. This dissertation identifies and follows one of the supply chains of a petroleum company operating in South Africa to investigate how value chain analysis can be implemented along its supply chain.

Tejay, Gurvirender. "Shaping Strategic Information Systems Security Initiatives in Organizations." VCU Scholars Compass, 2008. http://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/1576.

Full text
Abstract:
Strategic information systems security initiatives have seldom been successful. The increasing complexity of the business environment in which organizational security must be operationalized presents challenges. There has also been a problem with understanding the patterns of interactions among stakeholders that lead to instituting such an initiative. The overall aim of this research is to enhance understanding of the issues and concerns in shaping strategic information systems security initiative. To be successful, a proper undertaking of the content, context and process of the formulation and institutionalization of a security initiative is essential. It is also important to align the interconnections between these three key components. In conducting the argument, this dissertation analyzes information systems security initiatives in two large government organizations – Information Technology Agency and Department of Transportation. The research methodology adopts an interpretive approach of inquiry. Findings from the case studies show that the strategic security initiative should be harmonious with the cultural continuity of an organization rather than significantly changing the existing opportunity and constraint structures. The development of security cultural resources like security policy may be used as a tool for propagating a secure view of the social world. For secure organizational transformation, one must consider the organizational security structure, knowledgeability of agents in perceiving secure organizational posture, and global security catalysts (such as establishing trust relations and security related institutional reflexivity). The inquiry indicates that strategic security change would be successful in an organization if developed and implemented in a brief yet quantum leap adopting an emergent security strategy in congruence with organizational security values.

Abstract:
Don Bosco Technical School in Phnom Penh is a typical example of a long-running non-profit institution in Cambodia. In this part of the world it is plainly called an NGO – a non-governmental organization. It provides vocational skills training education to some four hundred out-of-school youth every year. And yet it does not charge for tuition; nay more it even provides free lunch at noon. So how does Don Bosco Technical School survive this monetary based and profit oriented society? What are its sustainability secrets? This capstone project strives to look at the institution from a business perspective with organizational behavior, strategic planning, and human resource management as criteria. To achieve this, the process will include: •A critical evaluation of its organic strategic plan through a thorough analysis of its strategic documents like: logical framework, organizational charts, and programming sheets.•A structured interview of key employees gauging factors such as: their job satisfaction, job fit, and job identification with organizational values. •An in-depth analysis of its human resource management through observation of operations and investigation of corresponding documents like: salary scales, contracts, policies and procedures. The results of the study show that Don Bosco’s main strength lies in the staff’s strong commitment to the mission of the organization thereby providing the motivation to continue the work in spite of financial odds. On the other hand it has room for improvement in terms of organizing a more formal human resource management system due to its institutionalizing trend and for sustained sustainability of its work.

Hodgkinson, Ian Richard. "Public leisure management : a strategic analysis of effectiveness and performance outcomes." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2009. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/12169.

Full text
Abstract:
Local government in England have reformed the management of their public services over many years. The increase in collaboration across the public sector between the public, private and voluntary sectors has been promoted under New Labour in public leisure provision, either through contracts or partnership arrangements. The transfer to collaboration has created significantly new modes of service delivery, including in-house, leisure trust, and private leisure management contractor arrangements. There is a need to examine and test in a more focused way the practices of those engaged in collaborative structures and reflect upon the implications these models present from a strategic management perspective. To this end, the thesis adopts a resource-based view of the firm and seeks to examine how the three approaches to public leisure provision develop strategies and effectively utilise and deploy resources through their strategic actions, with the overarching aim to achieve strategic outcomes. The main findings of the empirical analyses are two-fold. Firstly, of the three approaches examined, in-house provision has the most to gain from being more strategically aware. The case is made for significant strengthening oflocal government in-house managed facilities, which has often been viewed as the poor relation in public leisure provision and stands to lose the most in funding cuts and the subsidies provided to leisure trust rivals. Secondly, leisure trusts receive significant government funds and subsidies through tax breaks that are not forthcoming to rivals, which raises questions as to whether leisure trusts deserve such aid for delivering upon the social inclusion agenda of the government. Given that inclusion is not heavily emphasised or significantly achieved to any greater degree than rivals, it can be argued that this approach to provision does not justify the financial perks oftrust status provided to it. This thesis calls for a fundamental rethink of public policy and for the current public leisure management playing field to be levelled in a rebalance of opportunity and investment through the removal of anti-competitive measures in service delivery.

The DRAM industry has been growing in line with the development of information technology since the 1970's. However, the industry has become commoditized and is well known for its recurring cycle of upturns and downturns, resulting in a number of bankruptcies, mergers and acquisitions. Specifically, the years following 2000 became increasing challenging for the key DRAM producers that remained in the market. The combination of demand shifts to consumer oriented electronics and rising manufacturing costs reduced profitability across the industry. As these conditions persist, DRAM producers need to find a way to generate sustainable profit and to create buffers against imminent downturns. This thesis details the industry level problems DRAM vendors have faced in the past, the dynamics that have caused recurring industry cycles and commoditization, and how those dynamics affect the industry. In this context, the thesis concludes with two suggestions for potential strategies for market differentiation. First, DRAM producers should strengthen services that provide opportunities to differentiate their value proposition to customers while simultaneously generating new sources of profit. Second, DRAM market leaders should continue to focus heavily on R&D of high performance products while carefully managing the timing of new product launches to maximize profits.

Abstract:
In this thesis, I introduce a promising framework for representing an air traffic flow (stream) and flow-management action operating under weather uncertainty. I propose to use a meshed queuing and Markov-chain model---specifically, a queuing model whose service-rates are modulated by an underlying Markov chain describing weather-impact evolution---to capture traffic management in an uncertain environment. Two techniques for characterizing flow-management performance using the model are developed, namely 1) a master-Markov-chain representation technique that yields accurate results but at relatively high computational cost, and 2) a jump-linear system-based approximation that has promising scalability. The model formulation and two analysis techniques are illustrated with numerous examples. Based on this initial study, I believe that the interfaced weather-impact and traffic-flow model analyzed here holds promise to inform strategic flow contingency management in NextGen.

Abstract:
A global strategic financial analysis of the luxury retail industry was conducted. The research entailed comprehensive analyses and forecasts of the global economy, the luxury retail industry and four of the most prominent, multi-national luxury goods firms in the world. These companies included: Coach, Michael Kors, Tiffany & Co., and LVMH Moet Hennessy, whom market among the world's finest personal luxury goods from handbags, clothing and accessories to diamonds, jewelry, watches, fragrances, cosmetics and wines. The macroeconomic analysis focused on factors pertinent to the luxury goods industry such as: (1) the lasting effects of the global financial crisis, our gradual emergence from the Great Recession and the impact these conditions have had on consumer spending and confidence; (2) the generational shift of consumers from the retiring baby boomers to the technologically savvy Generation Z and their unique demands for products as well as experiences; and (3) the growth and demand from emerging economies, especially China which is the globe's top luxury nationality accounting for 25% of all luxury purchases worldwide. Comprehensive financial ratio analyses, SWOT assessments, technical trends and forecasts of revenues, earnings and share prices for the four companies, resulted in recommendations to investors and advice to top management of the four firms. Luxury retail is a fascinating, recession resilient industry and it is expected to reach €1 trillion within the next 5 years. However, regardless of how successful firms in this industry have been in the past, to survive and continue to succeed, it is imperative that they remain flexible and adaptable in this ever-changing world.

Abstract:
The introduction of contracts for difference, CFDs, in the Nordic market has meant a tremendous freedom for both large investors and small investors. CFDs, like many other financial derivatives, allow speculation on price movements in virtually all global markets with easy access to leverage, which is the same as borrowed capital. CFDs carry high risk and hence should only be used by qualified traders.  Swedish CFD providers have been criticized for mass marketing their services with lack of regard for the industry's sustainability. The legal requirements placed on CFD providers for customer's creditworthiness and knowledge are also said to be weak, given the products complexity and high risk. Thus, the purpose with this research is to respond to the criticism by examining the level of risk management, and the level of strategic awareness among CFD traders. The epistemological orientation of this research conforms to the philosophy of positivism, and the research approach is consistent with the deductive approach. The research is based on a quantitative data collection method were a survey was carried out with CMC Markets’ customers with 233 respondents. After examining the usage of risk management tools, position sizing and monitoring; the results suggest that the level of risk management among CFD traders is moderately high. For a trading strategy to function, and hence be successful, it is important that traders are consistent with the various components that a trading strategy consists of. After examining to what extent the CFD traders positions are based on rules and signals as well as loyalty to them, to what extent they optimize their trading strategy, and lastly to what extent they use available strategy methods I came to the conclusion that there is a relatively low level of strategic awareness. Keywords: CMC Markets, Finance, CFDs, Investment, Derivative, Securities Trading, CFD Trading, Stocks, Risk management, Strategic awareness, Trading strategy, Technical analysis, Fundamental analysis

Munoz, Cesar. "A REAL OPTION STRATEGIC SCORECARD DECISION FRAMEWORK FOR IT PROJECT SELECTION." Doctoral diss., University of Central Florida, 2006. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETD/id/2413.

Full text
Abstract:
ABSTRACT The problem of project selection is of significant importance in management of information systems. Almost $2 trillion is spent worldwide every year on IT projects, with over $600 billion spent in the US alone. Traditionally, managers have being using the classical net present value (NPV) method in conjunction with multicriteria scoring models for ROI analysis and selection of IT project investments The multicriteria models use ad-hoc evaluation criteria to assign priority weights and then rate the alternatives against each criterion. These models have two limitations. First, the criteria and weights are based on subjective judgments, allowing the introduction of politics in the information management decision process and the generation of arbitrary results. Second, the classical approach uses deterministic estimations of the cost, benefits and the returns of the projects, without considering the impact of uncertainty and risk in the business decisions. This research proposed a better alternative for ROI analysis and selection of IT projects using a real option strategic scorecard (ROSS) approach. In contrast with traditional methodologies and previous research work, the ROSS decision framework uses a more comprehensive, axiomatic approach for systematically measuring both the business value and the strategic implications of IT project investments. The ROSS approach integrates in a unified IT project management decision framework the best elements of real option theory, strategic balanced scorecards, Monte Carlo simulations and analytical network processes to fully analyzes the effect of uncertainty and risk in the IT investment decisions. In addition, the ROSS approach complies with the critical success factors that have being identified in the literature for validation of IT decision frameworks. The main benefit of the ROSS approach is to enable managers to better compare and rank projects in the IT portfolio, optimizing the ROI analysis and selection of information system projects.
