Recent studies of Falkland Islands seabird diets have found that Gonatus antarticus is a major prey item for a number of penguin species. Rockhopper (Eudyptes chrysocome), gentoo (Pygoscelis papua) and Magellanic (Spheniscus magellanicus) penguins breeding in the Falklands are estimated to consume several thousand million Gonatus per annum, with mean dorsal mantle lengths of 28–42 mm. Aspects of the distribution and growth of the G. antarcticus stock in the vicinity of the Falkland Islands are discussed.

The Falkland Islands belong to the British Overseas Territories, which remained after the collapse of the colonial system. This archipelago, which consists of more than 700 islands, has a strategic importance because it is a transit point on the way from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean. The Falklands is home to the British Air Force and Navy. Since the 19th century, the islands have become the subject of a constant territorial dispute between the United Kingdom and Argentina, which defended its right to them both at the negotiating table and on the battlefield. In December 1832 and January 1833 the British reoccupied the Falkland Islands or the Malvinas. This reassertion of British sovereignty began an uninterrupted period of control that lasted until 2 April 1982, when armed forces of the Republic of Argentina forced the surrender of the British governor and garrison at Stanley, the capital of what the British had come to call “The Falkland Islands Dependency.” The Argentine occupation ended with a surrender to British arms on 14 June 1982. These celebrated events of recent times brought forth a fundamental question, here addressed: Why did the Brit

ABSTRACTThis note considers the decision by the UK government to rename the southern portion of the Antarctic Peninsula - Queen Elizabeth Land. Named in honour of the UK Head of State, it was intended to be a ‘gift’ recognising her Diamond Jubilee. However, the 169,000 square mile territory in question is counter-claimed by Argentina and Chile. The circumstances surrounding this declaration, in December 2012, reveals both the contested politics of Antarctic place naming, and a growing willingness of the UK government to strengthen its ‘strategic presence’ in the Antarctic and wider South Atlan

ABSTRACTWith global warming, the clearance of the Northwest Passage and the rising demands for new energy resources, the sovereignty of Canadian and other national land claims in the Arctic north is coming into question by those wishing to control access to this region. The present paper examines issues involving emerging landmasses, maritime rights, strategic control and navigation, perhaps the most important variable, and the consequences in terms of commercial economies and geopolitical impacts. We consider many variables such as the 1982 Falkland Islands war as a demonstrative example that

This analysis proposes the thesis that in the formulation of post-war British defence policy, wider strategic developments taking place in the international environment are as important as, if not more than, domestic economic considerations, and examines the motivations that lay behind the British government's decision to recapture the Falkland Islands after their seizure by Argentine forces in April 1982. It is a first and comprehensive attempt to explore these two themes. It presents a challenge to the dominant view that British defence policy has, over the past two decades, been influenced

Abstract:
The Falklands War between Britain and Argentina from April to June 1982 was an emotive political and ideological issue for the UK and its Prime Minister, who fought tirelessly to safeguard the Falkland islanders’ right to self-determination. The war represented a considerable financial and moral commitment by the British to the Falkland Islands and their 1,800 inhabitants in a time of significant economic uncertainty in the UK. Notwithstanding this, Britain’s hegemony and influence over the islands was reasserted in the face of perceived Argentine aggression. Britain’s victory was considered a great success in the UK given the strategic difficulties involved in orchestrating a war in a wind-swept archipelago nearly 8,000 miles from the British mainland, but a mere 400 miles from Argentina. Moreover, it helped to secure Thatcher’s re-election the following year and was a source of national pride for the jubilant British public.1

Abstract:
They are in a raft – real or metaphorical – and from there they try to rescue their lives and their stories, the characters of Sobrevivientes (2012), a novel by Argentine writer and journalist Fernando Monacelli awarded with the Clarín Prize. The text is inserted in the group not very extensive, but at this point not negligible by number and literary quality, of narratives that thematise the Falkland Islands war and, like the previous ones, presents a strong anti-heroic vein. The novel combines the years of military dictatorship and the war that ended it and looks at the consequences of the two events from a private and intimate environment. It not only denies the heroism of the combatants but tacitly equates them, as victims, with the opponents of the regime. The analysis is proposed, on the one hand, to consider this new ideological position, on the other hand, to emphasise the formal aspects of the novel – located between epistolary writing and intimate diary – and in the relationship with the other narratives of the war of the South Atlantic.
