The concept of happiness becomes of great political importance in France during the Great Revolution. ZusammenfassungThis paper investigates the function of translation in the context of scientific communication, examining the correspondence between the Italian universal scientist Lazzaro Spallanzani, his translator Jean Senebier, and the Swiss naturalist Charles Bonnet. The main thesis is that the function of scientific translation goes far beyond the simple communication of scientific content and that it in fact played a complex role in the system of exchange and circulation of symbolic capital within the scientific community in the Early Modern Period. To illustrate the complexity of scientific translation, the paper focusses on Spallanzani’s remarkable adoption of a twofold perspective: on the one hand, it examines Spallanzani’s translation of Bonnet’s Contemplation de la nature; on the other, it considers some of Senebier’s French translations of the Italian scientist. In both cases, translations not only played an important role in the career planning of the actors involved, but were also part of science policy strategies. Last, but not least, they were crucial for the formation and stabilization of national science systems.

The study of American grand strategy is dominated by historians who describe former grand strategies, and international relations scholars who prescribe what it should be. In contrast to either approach, this chapter has three components: First, it identifies the national cultural influences, the key elements of the mythic “American Creed,” that provide the emblematic foundations of contemporary American grand strategy. Second, it describes the historical evolution of the institutional mechanisms that both formulate and implement American grand strategy, and how those institutions actually operate in the modern era. And third, relating these elements, it explains the parameters of American grand strategic planning—how it operates in practice. This includes an overt reliance on military instruments and a conscious sensitivity to field conditions in implementation that may undermine the most grand strategic designs. The chapter concludes by contemplating the prospects for continuity and change in American grand strategy.

Deterrence attempts to prevent an undesired behavior by convincing the party that may be contemplating it that the cost will exceed any possible gain. Deterrence thinking fails to grasp the causes of competition and conflict and consequently addresses only symptoms of strategic tensions. The American strategy of hegemonic deterrence and the Chinese strategy of active defense risk mutual escalation of suspicions, increase reliance on worse-case analysis, and intensify rather than ameliorate their competition. Deterrence has a role to play in security policy, but overdose is likely to be dangerous. This chapter proposes a strategy of minimal deterrence for both countries to reduce the harms of aggressive deterrence and to make room for the more productive strategies of reassurance and diplomacy.

Abstract:

Using a set of macro-level socio-economic indicators, we first explore whether two Middle Eastern countries (Lebanon and Iran) provide the foundation for organizations to develop their intellectual capital (IC). Then, we investigate the role of micro-level organizational characteristics that might support or hinder the development of IC management processes within organizations. The insight gained through our comparison will shed light on some important organizational attributes that foster the management of IC for wealth creation. The analysis has important implications for multinational corporations (MNCs) that have operations in the Middle East, are contemplating business involvement in the Middle East, or that have employees with Middle Eastern origin.
