Abstract:
Background: Strategic capabilities are vital components for organisations to include in their business. Another essential elements in a strategy that can affect the performance of an organisation in both a negative and positive direction are critical success factors. This research will study if it possible to evaluate organisations CSFs in order to see whether a well performed CSF also can be identified as a strategic capability. Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to evaluate organisations CSF in order to identify strategic capabilities Research question: What CSFs can be identified? Which CSFs are identified as strategic capabilities? Methodology: This thesis involved a qualitative pre-study consistent of a content analysis and semi-structured interview that were used to provide measurements to the quantitative survey. Conclusion: The findings indicate that it is possible to identify strategic capabilities by evaluating CSFs. In this study transportation, number of stores and the atmosphere were considered as strategic capabilities.

Ahmad, Husairi Mariyani. "Imitative market entry strategies : the role of strategic orientation, resources, capabilities and absorptive capacity." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2014. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/73644/.

Full text
Abstract:
Despite being more common than innovation, little is known about the strategies involved in imitative market entries and the capabilities enabling their executions. Drawing on the Resource-based View and Competitive Dynamics perspectives, the study examines the role of marketing capability, technological capability and absorptive capacity in aiding technological firms to engage in successful imitative market entries. The research also examines the relationship between strategic types and resources as well as the relationship between resources and capabilities. Finally, the research investigates the role of capabilities as determinants of entry timing, relative product advantage and relative price, which in turn influence product performance. The research provides important managerial and theoretical implications. First, the integration of the RBV and Competitive Dynamics perspectives provides a richer explanation of the heterogeneity in firms’ performance. Second, the findings show that firms’ strategic orientation determines the level of marketing and R&D resources. Third, the interaction between technological capability and marketing capability accelerates imitative market entry. Fourth, technological and marketing capabilities have a U-shaped relationship with market entry. Finally, the present study found marginal support for the prediction that entry timing, relative product advantage and relative price increase the likelihood of product survival. The U-shaped relationship observed between technological and marketing capabilities with market entry illustrate the double-edged sword nature of capabilities. Although strong technological and marketing capabilities facilitate firms’ swift entry into the market for some, for others they may cause them to be trapped in existing product, lock them in with existing customers and prevent them from being receptive to the new opportunities in the environment. Finally, because marketing and technological capability interaction is significantly related to earlier entry and earlier entry is associated with a higher product survival rate, managers considering an imitative market entry need to invest in the development of these two capabilities.

The general idea of this research is to analyze overall firm performance before and after the global financial crisis of 2008. The main question is: What kind of strategies did companies adopt that led to positive business performance after the crisis? Are there any particular competitive advantages that bring better performance in the case of an economic downturn? This research focuses on competitive advantage gained by resource-based view attributes of a product (quality, durability and prestige) and dynamic capabilities (strategic flexibility in product development and technological innovation ability). The economic crisis setting provides a proper background to analyze the competitive advantage strategies in a dynamic, low-probability environment to determine which are most worth adopting in the business world. I employ an OLS regression analysis in order to measure the business performance of 136 Brazilian firms across four years – 2002, 2005, 2008 and 2012. The findings indicate that even though all of the strategic resources and capabilities positively influence firm performance in expansionary periods, only the superior product characteristics are pertinent in surviving an economic downturn.

Sanssoucie, Kim Clare. "Critical resources and capabilities of sustainable entrepreneurial orientation and its linkage to strategic decision-making." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/75273.

Abstract:
Multiple strategic orientations are management philosophies and practices that assist organisations with internal preparation for quicker responses to external environmental changes. An organisations ability to integrate and foster a Sustainable Entrepreneurial Orientation (SEO) into their business strategies, organisational routines, culture and leadership values is yet to be studied. In view of this, this study responds to this unique research gap through exploring the critical resources and capabilities which enable organisations to intentionally foster SEO and identifying its linkage to strategic decision-making. Establishing which organisational components have considerable influence on SEO will enable organisations to recognise opportunities and constraints of their internal contexts and better equip themselves to enact sustainability and innovation focused activities in response to the grand economic, social and ecological challenges facing society and business. The choice of methodology is qualitative research which used one-on-one in-depth interviews with interview respondents in an emerging market context (South Africa) and a developed market context (Italy) which triangulated the data of this phenomenon. The results indicated that intangible, human-centred resources such as leadership, culture and human capital are the most critical resources for SEO to be fostered which must work systemically in combination with each other and through strategic decision-making organisations can gain competitive advantage, firm performance, new resources and capabilities and a continued licence to operate in society. Market context affects this relationship. The study generated the Integrated Sustainable Entrepreneurial Strategy (ISES) Model which can be used by strategic managers and executives to foster SEO within their organisations.

Akwei, Cynthia A. "The process of creating dynamic capabilities." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2007. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/7869.

Full text
Abstract:
The concept of dynamic capability (DC) is receiving significant attention from scholars in strategy and organisation research. However, most of the research is conceptual in nature. In this thesis, the process of how DCs are created in two firms is examined using the grounded theory methodology (GTM) with the aim of developing a substantive theory of DC creation. Data were collected using theoretical sampling, and unstructured and semi-structured interviews. These data were then analysed using the constant comparison method to identify and explain the process through which DCs are created. The findings from the study reveal that DCs are created through continuous internal activities such as in-house innovation, human resource activities (HRAs), and external activities with partners through collaboration and acquisitions. Firms learn from these activities, which lead to changes in the static organisational capabilities and the development of higher order capabilities, the DCs. From this study, a framework has been developed for considering and managing the process of creating DCs at a strategic level. The framework explains the reasons why these firms develop and renew their DCs, identifies the key resources required, and examines the activities through which DCs are developed and renewed. The framework is both iterative and simultaneous. Implications for academics and practitioners are discussed, and limitations and directions for future research are outlined.

Environmental issues are critical for business either as a constraint or an opportunity. Hence, they should be addressed by firms as a strategic priority integrated in their operations strategy. In order to do so, firms need to develop green capabilities and assets that support their green strategies. This paper discusses the green capabilities necessary to develop green innovation initiatives. It presents a framework that structures the relationship between drivers of green operations strategies, firms’ resources and green innovation as a source of competitive advantage. Case study research is used to support and extend the framework. Case study evidences validate the framework, provide additional insights and suggest new lines of research on these topics.

Väyrynen, K. (Karin). "Evolution of software business in industrial companies: Resources, capabilities and strategy." Doctoral thesis, University of Oulu, 2009. http://urn.fi/urn:isbn:9789514293115.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Research on software business has, so far, mainly concentrated on the software industry. However, software business has recently also been practised outside the software industry, in so-called industrial companies. This research aims at increasing empirical and theoretical understanding of the development of software business in industrial companies, shedding light on why a company not belonging to the software industry starts to do business involving software, how the company goes about starting such business, and how this in turn affects the company. First, past research on the resource-based approach, capability approach, dynamic capability approach and the concept of strategy is reviewed. Based on this review, four processes that hold the potential to give a company (sustained) competitive advantage – picking resources, exploiting resources, applying capabilities and developing capabilities – and three important dimensions of strategy – the objective of strategy, the process of strategy formation, and the focus of strategy – are identified. A conceptual framework for studying the development of software business in industrial companies is developed which encompasses the processes holding the potential for (sustained) competitive advantage and the different dimensions of strategy, as well as the company’s resource, capability and dynamic capability base. Following that, empirical data collected in two internationally operating industrial companies is analyzed with the help of the conceptual framework. As a result of the empirical data analysis, 23 capabilities and several resources important for software business in industrial companies could be identified. Capabilities are categorized according to their use in and applicability to different types of software business. Factors influencing the application, development and improvement of capabilities, as well as different ways of how industrial companies start to do software business, are identified. The conceptual framework is revised by adding the process of developing capabilities further to the processes which hold the potential for competitive advantage, and clarifying the role of dynamic capabilities in the development of software business in industrial companies.

Abstract:
The corporate political activity field has focused on the study of political capabilities that allow firms to influence governments and regulators. Building on previous studies, this thesis examines a set of capabilities that allow host firms to adapt to rather than influence political environments. Specifically, this set of adaptive political capabilities can be used by firms to confront host country political contexts in emerging economies that share two characteristics: authoritarian regimes and weak institutions. The findings of this thesis show that host firms can develop and use adaptive political capabilities rather than political capabilities to start and sustain their operations in this type of political contexts. This entails attuning firm processes, structures, and practices to local norms and political behaviors, rather than attempting to shape the host country political environment in its own likeness. Our results suggest host firms can develop adaptive political capabilities to enhance their strategic repertoire when starting or sustaining operations in emerging economies with such characteristics. Our contribution is that by using mixed methods, we provide and test several exploratory propositions that support the conceptualization of a framework to guide the development of adaptive political capabilities by host firms and we make explicit a taxonomy of corporate adaptive political strategies that can enable firms to envision how they can adapt to host political contexts.

Abstract:
Purpose: Finding which resources and capabilities are deployed among Istanbul-based apparel manufacturers, evaluating to what extent they are tangible, intangible as well as capabilities as well as lastly analysing them according to the valuable, rare, inimitable and non-substitutable framework. Design/methodology: The research design consists of a case study held at several firms. Empirical data was collected using semi-structured interviews. Empirical data: Empirical data was primarily collected at nine different apparel manufacturers within the greater Istanbul region. Conclusion: Conclusions show that within the bundles of resources and capabilities, a large variation was noted with high international competitiveness. However there are areas such as design and quality which could be continuously developed among firms. In the end, whatever bundle of resources and capabilities a firm has, it’s the end price that speaks.

by providing universal delivery service. The Second Machine Age has ushered in a new digital economy, which is transforming the way the world communicates and conducts business. Consequently, USPS faces unprecedented challenges, including nearly a decade of declining mail volume and inflexible business conditions that make it difficult to sufficiently react. The Postal Service must continue to transform and adapt to advance as a vital service organization. To fully understand the capability to adapt, this thesis will explore the long Postal Service history of embracing innovative technologies and organizational transformations to meet the changing needs of the American public. The Postal Service has been exploring innovative strategies to continue to adapt to a rapidly changing digital economy. For a new strategy to be successful it must align with the firm's industry positioning, competitive resources, organizational capabilities and existing business conditions. This thesis will analyze the USPS positioning within the two Industries that it currently operates, and examine existing Postal Service resources, positioning and capabilities to identify competitive advantages that can be leveraged to implement innovative competitive initiatives. This thesis will develop an understanding of its organizational capabilities and evaluate existing business conditions that impact the ability to implement new strategies. This thesis will then evaluate potential strategies based on their ability to leverage these competitive advantages, align with organizational capabilities, and navigate current business conditions. Finally, strategic frameworks will be applied to evaluate and prioritize strategies based on their industry attractiveness, viability and competitive sustainability. Ultimately the goal is to provide strategic recommendations to leverage organizational capabilities and resources and help the Postal Service advance as a vital 21st century service organization and meet the changing needs of the American public.

Abstract:
The world today is confronted by the worst financial and economic crisis since the Great Depression of 1920’s. Due to the financial system being globalised and interdependent, the contagion effects of the financial crisis trickled down to Europe and ultimately triggered the recession of 2007-2009, which had far-reaching repercussions on cross-border economic activities. The severe international downturn had a significant effect on the Swedish economy and Swedish SMEs. Moreover, the recession has heightened economic uncertainty and combined with the existing challenges facing SMEs, created one of the most difficult business climates in decades, hence, a prevailing need for creating resilience. The purpose of this study is to examine how Swedish Internationalised SMEs remain resilient during times of recession. This will be studied through investigating what resources and capabilities were crucial for building resilience and how the SMEs changed their strategy during the recession to remain resilient. The study is conducted through a qualitative case study and an abductive approach in order to get a profound insight into the firm’s behaviour. The theoretical framework is founded on the area of strategy and resilience, by accounting for strategy formulation, the RBV, resilience and strategic change. Moreover, the empirical chapter presents the results of the data gathered from the six case companies and is structured according to the companies and the three research problems. In the analysis, the patterns emerging from the theoretical framework and the empirical data is analysed based on the three research problems through trying to understand the underlying reasons for the emerging patterns. The study conclude that Swedish internationalized SMEs remained resilient during the recession of 2007- 2009, through reconfiguring its critical resources and capabilities, and changing their strategy to adapt to the changes in the external environment caused by the recession.

Abstract:
In the field of strategic human resource management there is evident concern with investigation into variables that intercede in the relationship between strategic human resource management and organizational performance. In order de clarify the intermediate steps in the process of generating results of strategic human resource management, earlier research suggests an analysis of factors at the organizational level, an example being organizational capabilities. Within this context, the general objective of this research was to establish relationships among the settings of human resource strategies, organizational capabilities and organizational performance in the hotel sector in the Brazilian Northeast, offering support for the management efficacy of these business undertakings and for the maximization of results in the sector. A descriptive and relational study, with a quantitative approach, was designed. One hundred and fifty-one questionnaires were applied to managers of hotels located in the two principal tourism destinations of four states in the Northeast Region of Brazil: Salvador, BA, Porto Seguro, BA, Fortaleza, CE, Canoa Quebrada, CE, Recife, PE, Porto de Galinhas, PE, Natal, RN and Pipa, RN. Human resource strategies were evaluated according to Cameron\'s and Quinn\'s (2006) Competitive Values Model. Organizational capabilities were investigated by way of Ulrich\'s (1998, 2000) Multiple Roles Model. Organizational performance was measure by use of indicators adopted from earlier research: hotel occupation rate, average value of daily rates, financial performance, labor productivity and service quality. Data were analyzed through the application of diverse statistical techniques consistent with the characteristics of the data and research objectives. The results reveal that there exists a reasonable equilibrium in the implementation of the diverse configurations of the Competing Values Model. However, a tendency to be more able to put into practice human resource strategies that present an organizational focus oriented toward the internal environment and to a lesser implementation of strategies directed toward the external environment was perceived. Also, a tendency was verified, among the hotels, to be more able to develop organizational capabilities orientated toward the day-to-day and for the operational level and to encounter greater difficulties in developing organizational capabilities directed toward the future and for the strategic level. The relationships discovered confirm the super positioning proposed by Cameron and Quinn (2006) between the human resource strategies of the Competing Values Model and the organizational capabilities of Ulrich\'s (1998) Multiple Roles Model and reveal other concomitant and complementary associations. The multiple relationships identified in the study lend support to a configurational perspective that suggest the existence of hybrid models, in which elements of the four models of human resource management analyzed here are contemplated, in the search for a synergetic combination among the models in order to maximize and take advantage of the benefits that each model is capable of providing. Only two of the organizational capabilities exercise direct influence over organizational performance, both focused upon personnel administration activities, presenting greater emphasis on people and translating into greater flexibility. On the other hand, complementary analyses present testimony that hotels that are able to develop the four organizational capabilities in a jointly and equilibrated form, manage to reach higher performance, thus confirming the notion of equilibrium defended by the authors of both models. The findings permit a comprehension and amplification of the relationships between human resource strategies and organizational performance, inserting organizational capabilities as a mediating variable.

Abstract:

This thesis is understood within the context of the knowledge economy. In this sense this study reflects several matters that contribute to the firms' competitive advantage; these are:

1) The mission and vision of the interviewed companies. Even though most people know what these issues are, they are not formally stated.
2) Both strategies, operations and innovation, are also well known to the interviewed people yet, as with the previous point, they are not formally stated but pretty well executed.
3) The interviewed people are able to identify its competitive advantage and the main intangible assets that support it.
4) Because of the above, these persons are aware that their most valuable asset is that of their employees; without the knowledge inside the heads of their collaborators the company is lost.
5) The previous point signals trust. All the interviewed people acknowledge that an important part of their firms' success is social capital. This asset is inside, outside or on both sides of the firm. Put differently, man because of it's own nature is a social being that cannot live and prosper its qualities by itself (Concilio II, 1965) so once trust is fully exercised, benefits arrive.
6) Because of the previous issues, the interviewed people believe that if they were utilising the proposed theory and its model to formulate strategies, their overall strategy formulation process will be enhanced.
7) Despite point #6 the interviewed persons also acknowledge that, because of their company's size, the theory and its model are too big for them, but the constructs that build this theory appear sensible.

Abstract:
Firms are confronted by a lot of internal and external challenges within a dynamic competitive environment. Especially the increasing technological change derived from innovations, the fast diffusion of new technologies, the development of new business models, and the globalization are known as the main drivers for this. The consequence is increasing dynamism and complexity in business relations resulting in the emergence of strategic alliances, such as joint ventures, virtual organizations, and loose contractual agreements among firms. In this contribution strategic alliances are defined as cooperative agreements of any form with the aim of strengthening the partners’ positions in an industry (Arino & la Torre, 1998). Opportunities for risk and knowledge sharing among business partners, obtaining new veins for new markets, and the possibility to add new competencies are the main forces behind this trend towards strategic alliances (Prahalad & Hamel, 1994). Several quantitative studies counted an increasing number of international strategic alliances during the past four decades (Büchel, 2004; Gomes-Casseres, 1988; Hagedoorn & van Kranenburg, 2003; Narula & Hagedoorn, 1998). But even if the strategic alliances are popular, several studies reported a high failure rate of strategic alliances between 40% and 60% (Drago, 1997; Bresser & Harl, 1986; Hennart, Kim & Zeng, 1998; Park & Ungson, 2001). Harbison and Pekár (1998) analyzed that some firms have a success rate in strategic alliancing of 87% while other firms have a success rate of only 37%. The main motivation of this contribution is to address this significant difference and to analyze the impact of internal capabilities in strategic alliances. Therefore we argue that firms need a specific capability to build up and develop strategic alliances, which is labeled as the alliance capability. This contribution covers two research questions: (1) Which processes and structures determine alliance capability? (2) How do firms develop alliance capability? Even if alliance capability covers identifiable routines and resources, it has a dynamic character which means that these capabilities could increase or decrease over time. This capability is a result of learning processes and past dependent experiences. An alliance capability is positively related to an increased absorptive capacity and to a firm’s performance in the full sense of successful behavior in the market (Kapur et al., 2005). Therefore an alliance capability is necessary to operate in a co-opetitive environment which is characterized by Bresser and Harl (1986) or more recently by Luo (2007). Schilke (2007) argues that an alliance capability has an influence on the competitive advantages of a firm. This contribution will describe a research framework of alliance capability to analyze the roles of resources, processes, and paths in respect of alliance capability. To validate the model, an explorative study of the alliance activities of Deutsche Boerse Group (DBAG), a global stock exchange company, between 1997 and 2007 will be performed.

The main objective of this dissertation is to understand which elements inherent to physical distribution can lead manufacturers of fast consumer goods, specifically in the segment related to cleaning products, gain competitive advantage. The survey was conducted considering the perceptions of manufacturers and retailers about the physical distribution services. As a theoretical foundation it was used the resource-based view (RBV) including concepts of value, competitive advantage and competitive strategies, as well, the concepts of physical distribution and logistics. The exploratory research type and a descriptive qualitative methodology were used. Through a semi-structured script, eight executives, being three from the retail sector and five from industry manufacturers, were interviewed. The data was treated and analyzed considering the content analysis technician. It was noted that there are evidences that the combination of tangible and intangible resources are elements that can generate competitive advantage for manufacturers. It was noted the high importance given by the retailers on the stock availability and service level compliance by manufacturers. From the manufacturer s perspective, the establishment of "go to market" strategy in order to meet the retailers needs, as well, the cost management with the aim of generating economic value higher than the competitors are the basis of their perception about how the competitive advantage can be created. In light of the RBV, the conjunction of resources like warehouse and transportation networks, systems and personnel can create value for the retailers, but can not be considered strategic since they are imitable and not rare. In the other hand, culture of services and intellectual capital resources has characteristics of strategic resources. When the physical distribution services are related to the three biggest retailers of the market, it was noted that the manufactures have been using strategies of differentiation and cost leadership to gain competitive advantage. From the practical standpoint, it was noted that the manufacturers still have difficulty make use of strategic partners more effectively to improve services for physical distribution. Finally, retailers believe that the value is still in to delivery the basics in terms of physical distribution services and, in this way, there is still a long way to be covered by the manufacturers.

Abstract:

Our interest in this thesis is based on the discussion we had in previous courses about the development of emerging countries. Since two of the writers of this thesis are from Poland we tried to found a common interest, hence the relationship between the Polish subcontractors and Swedish customer is analyzed.

Poland is also known as a low cost country and that make it favorable when it comes about hiring subcontractors. The subcontractors in Poland are also known for the skills and expertise to produce quality. Something that is important for many foreign companies. IKEA has more than 40 subcontractors in Poland; the reason is just the factors mentioned above, to be able to produce good quality to low cost. (www.ikea.com)

Earlier research indicate that Poland is developing rapidly compare to other emergent countries in Eastern Europe. There have been and will be changes in the environment that most likely will affect the competitive advantage that the subcontractors are the leader in. In other words these changes might lead to that Poland loses its customers which choose other markets that still are able produce at lower costs.

The main problem for the thesis is to investigate how can polish subcontractors cope with environmental changes to sustain competitive advantage?

In order to answer this, we used a qualitative approach where the characteristics of a case study are conducted. We collected and analyzed data in an abductive way. The interviews with the three Polish subcontractors were made in a semi structure form via telephone. To be able to solve the above problem an environmental analysis of Poland was done, in order to found those factors that are mentioned as worries and are likely to change in the future. The changes are presented from subcontractors’ perspective and recommendation how to cope with them is given.

Research that integrate strategy and real options theories suggest that firms can be regarded as a portfolio of future opportunities and that resources, capabilities and organizational processes must be in place in order to ensure its optimization. Firms differ in this optimization capacity and this heterogeneity along with the effects of other factors are reflected in the variability and in the dynamic behavior of the value of growth options (vgo). In accordance with previous studies using variance component methodology, firm effects are predominant over country and industry effects and explain a significant portion of total variance of vgo. Longitudinal analyses through latent curve models under the perspective of structural equations (complemented by hierarchical linear models) confirm that size explain the cross-section differences in the initial values of vgo, whereas industry dynamism has a positive and significant effect on vgo that varies non-linearly across time. Apart from the effects of these covariates, there still remains a significant portion of unexplained variances in latent parameters that determine the trajectories of vgo across time, probably due to the effect of unobservable and firm-specific factors.

The main objective of this research is to understand how resources, capabilities and business strategies for seeking competitive advantage are treated in companies that work with low differentiation products and services in dynamic environment when subjected to ruptures. As a theoretical foundation it was used the resource-based view (RBV), including the concepts of competitive advantage, value creation, generic strategies and dynamic capabilities. The chosen dynamic market was from prepaid cards for travel, loaded with foreign currency, which was impacted by government rule changes in 2011 and 2013. It was adopted an exploratory descriptive study in a qualitative methodology. The survey was conducted considering perceptions from the point of view of managers. A multiple cases study was held in which twelve executives were interviewed through a semi-structured script, in four companies (Midsize Bank, Brokerage Exchange, Exchange Bank and Retail Banking), representing for 77% of Travel Prepaid Card market share, The data was treated and analyzed based on content analysis method. It was noted that the resources had their strategic attributes modified and their relevance has changed, specifically in the cases studied. It was possible to observe a change in the way the companies manage existing resources and capabilities, incorporating new and transforming others. However, it seems that companies have not looked systematically and intentionally to their resource and capabilities base in times of sudden environment changes. It was also observed that the strategic positioning remained unchanged regardless of environmental changes. In short, the strategic management of resources and capabilities becomes more complex in dynamic environments with sudden changes.

Abstract:
In recent years, new technologies have led to disruption and change within most industries, resulting in the emergence of digitally-born start-ups. The purpose of this thesis is to complement the scarce theory about what the drivers of business model adaptation in start-ups consist of and how the adaptation process is managed to stay competitive. The findings not only provide theoretical contributions, but can also help managers to steer their start-upsthrough the growth phase. The research is set within the realms of business model theory in the strategic management field. An exploratory study with a qualitative, inductive approach was chosen to gain insights into the business model dynamics of nine firms from the fintech and healthtech industries. The results showed that foreign market adaptation, industry dynamics, funding, and legislation are perceived challenges, whereas legislation and exogenous shocks are opportunities that drive business model adaptation in start-ups. The business model elements of strategic decision-making, resources and capabilities, and network and partners were found to be integral to the adaptation process, as their core components not only need to be adapted to the environment but also aligned with each other. Those components should be revised in an iterative trial-and-error process driven by feedback.

Abstract:
This dissertation examines the development and renewal of capabilities through acquisitions by drawing from absorptive capacity literature (Cohen and Levinthal, 1990; Zahra and George, 2002). This dissertation examines four interrelated questions concerning (1) the impact of acquisition experience on a firm’s absorptive capacity, (2) the role of absorptive capacity in the renewal of capabilities through acquisition, (3) the impact of capabilities renewal through acquisition on a firm’s choice of future growth mode, and (4) the impact of capabilities renewal through acquisition on post-acquisition performance. These questions are examined using FDIC data and surveys administered to top managers of banks that conducted acquisitions between October 2004 and October 2006. Results of this study suggest that a firm’s past experience with internal development and acquisition impacts the development of its absorptive capacity. Furthermore, results suggest that absorptive capacity has multiple dimensions and that the respective absorptive capacity dimensions have unique independent and joint effects on a firm’s ability to renew its capabilities through acquisition. Results also suggest that the impact of the change in capabilities on the firm’s choice of future growth mechanism largely depends on the nature of capability that changed through acquisition. When firms experience an improvement or decline in important revenue-generating capabilities that are fundamental to firm performance, the firm is more likely to pursue future acquisition to either compensate for its inability to grow by its own internal means or to exploit its improved capability in a new setting. However, when management capabilities or operational capabilities experience an improvement or a decline, the firms is less likely to pursue future acquisition in order to avoid taxing the already strained capability or to take time to fully internalize the improved capability. Results also suggest that the change in capabilities through acquisition is positively associated with a change in post-acquisition performance.

Abstract:
The following Bachelor’s thesis explores the different uses of crowdsourcing by private organisations and analyses them internally, in terms of strategic capabilities. The purpose of this Bachelor’s thesis is to show the reader the different internal strategic issues resulting from the use of crowdsourcing by private organisations. The authors focused namely on crowd creation, crowdfunding and crowd voting through three private organisations using one of these types respectively in their business processes. The qualitative research was conducted through a multiple case study design and through interviews for the primary data collection. The results from the research varied from case to case. Firstly, the Ricola case has shown that crowd creation can especially have impacts on its physical strategic capabilities. Secondly, La Biscuiterie Jeannette’s case has indicated that crowdfunding strongly impacts its financial strategic capabilities. Thirdly, the case of Schneider has enabled to highlight on the one hand the growing importance of crowd voting and on the other hand that crowd voting had no major impacts on its strategic capabilities, yet. Finally, this research intended to give inspiration to other researchers into the field of crowdsourcing and its three subtypes. Therefore, this thesis can be a basis for further researches in this field.

The research, the type documentary research, aimed to identify the factors affecting the performance of research projects and agricultural innovation carried out in public research institutions. To this end, we selected a sample of 40 research projects of Embrapa Mandioca e Fruticultura, completed in the period between 2005 and 2012. Having as dependent variables the number of technologies generated, number of papers published and impact of the papers in the scientific community, and how independent heterogeneity of resources, partnerships and alliances networks and reputation of the project team, research conducted descriptive and inferential statistical analyzes to establish identifying proposal. System was used STATA 8.0 and the Poisson and MQO models to obtain the results. As a result the research found that diverse teams and partnerships, networks and alliances have a positive influence on the number of technologies generated by research projects. Revealed that the more "Bolsista Produtividade on the project team" is the smallest number of technologies generated. Also showed that for the variable "number of items generated," the more homogeneous is the staff and the greater the number of researchers involved in the project, the greater the number of published papers. Finally, we identified networks and alliances and greater reputation of the researchers of the project team does not have influenced the number of papers published. Other important results were also found, based on observations of control variables.

Business Administration/Strategic Management
Ph.D.
This dissertation consists of three papers that are linked through the topic of organizational capabilities. The first paper, entitled "Organizational Core Capabilities, Strategic Intent and Performance: A Study of the Pharmaceutical Industry," looks at the association between capabilities, strategic intent and performance. Employing capabilities theory and the strategic intent literature, I model (i) the association of firm-level capabilities and rigidities on performance, (ii) the association of strategic intent and performance and (iii) the interaction effects of capabilities and strategic intent upon performance. Our sample consists of pharmaceutical firms during the years 1993 to 2003 and I find that both capabilities and strategic intent are negatively associated with firm performance. The interaction of the two main effects is positively related to performance conditional on firms having high strategic intent. The findings point to potential evidence of core rigidities theory as well as strategic intent theory, which has yet to be empirically tested by scholars. The second paper is entitled "The Impact of Political Capabilities on Firm Performance: An Empirical Investigation." In this paper, I integrate capabilities theory with the literature on corporate political activity (CPA). The CPA literature has been robust in addressing the determinants of a firm's choice to engage in political activities but has been less robust in modeling the CPA-performance link. I address this by first integrating capabilities theory and political action and then by testing a number of constructs on a sample of Fortune 500 firms from varying industries. Specifically, I find that political action committee (PAC) intensity and lobbying intensity is associated with higher firm performance. I then interact PAC intensity with lobbying intensity and also find positive association between this interaction and performance, denoting that these two activities are complements and not substitutes. Finally, I moderate these relationships with industry concentration and find that performance increases for politically active firms as industries become more concentrated. The third paper is titled "Political Capabilities and Rigidities: The Case of AT&T's Acquisition Attempt of T-Mobile USA." This paper studies, in an in-depth case study, the political capabilities of American Telephone and Telegraph (AT&T), focusing on the years 1984-2011. Using capabilities and rigidities theory from management, I provide detailed evidence of (i) AT&T's intent to compete on political capabilities, (ii) the success derived from these political capabilities and (iii) situational failure resulting from an over-reliance on these political capabilities. In the empirical section, I show how the firm failed to assess external information that it needed to adjust its competitive strategy and, as a result, failed to acquire a key competitor. This paper makes contributions to capabilities research, rigidities research and corporate political activity.

The Edwards Flight Test Range is a part of 20,000 square miles of DOD airspace (R-2508). A hypersonic air vehicle traveling above Mach 3 can easily exceed that airspace within seconds. An Unpiloted Autonomous Vehicle can exceed the airspace when flying long duration missions. To satisfy the flight-test requirements of Hypersonic Air Vehicles and Unpiloted Autonomous Vehicles, additional airspace and extended test ranges are required. The Air Force Flight Test Center and Dryden Flight Research Center at Edwards Air Force Base, California have mutual goals to support these flight test programs. To meet these goals, the Extended Test Range Alliance was formed as an engineering and operations team to satisfy program requirements in the areas of telemetry, flight termination, ground communications, uplink command, and differential global positioning systems. This paper will discuss the resources and technical capabilities available through the Extended Test Range.

Carrick, Jon. "R&D and financial resources and capabilities development in life science ventures : a dynamic capabilities perspective." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2012. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/3040/.

Full text
Abstract:
Life science firms compete in rapidly changing environments that demand substantial resources and capabilities. Nevertheless, there are a growing number of small life science firms, and these firms are having a profound impact on innovation in the industry. However, little is known on how these firms overcome resource constraints to finance and develop R&D resources and capabilities. Consequently, the purpose of this thesis is to empirically explore how small life science firms develop R&D and financial resources and capabilities. A closely related area that this research is also fundamentally concerned with is how R&D and financial resources and capabilities affect firms‟ early growth. The central aim of this research is to unearth insights on the motivations, assets and processes that lead to the development of R&D and financial resources and capabilities. To accomplish this, the research draws on the resource-based view and dynamic capabilities. The resources-based view is interested in the resources from which firms derive competitive advantages. Whilst dynamic capabilities focus on how firms in rapidly changing environments – especially high technology environments – configure and reconfigure their assets and capabilities to develop competitive advantages. Because this research is concerned with the development of key resources and capabilities of firms in rapidly changing environments, a resource-based view influenced dynamic capabilities framework is used to isolate the development of R&D and financial resources and capabilities of life science firms. An in depth case study approach is used to examine the research questions. It draws on longitudinal data collected from six life science firms. Data has been collected from twenty interviews and over 3000 pages of secondary data. The interview data is abstracted using four techniques: 1) identifying repetitions, 2) looking for transitions, 3) identifying similarities and differences and 4) cutting and sorting notable quotes. Following Miles and Huberman (1994), the data is then analysed using a multiple step abstraction and condensing process. A unique triangulation technique is used at the end of the study where the key informants are surveyed on the results of the qualitative analysis. Results from the study indicate that a unique set of past decisions, future opportunities, assets, capabilities and routines leads to the development of R&D and financial resources and capabilities. It is evident in all of the case firms in this study that scientific breakthroughs, partnership opportunities, the founders‟ experience and the firm‟s ability to integrate resources and learn from earlier paths are vital to the development of R&D and financial resources and capabilities. The study makes several contributions to the practice and scholarship of management. It provides insights on how small life science firms develop the R&D and financial resources to compete in a highly dynamic industry. From a scholarly perspective, it extends the dynamic capabilities framework and offers empirical support to several categories of dynamic capabilities. It also offers support to R&D and financial capabilities as categories of complementary assets. This thesis identifies details of the aforementioned aspects, discusses the importance of the findings in relation to the literature, and offers future research directions.

Thesis, Umeå universitet, Företagsekonomi, 2020. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:umu:diva-172308.

Abstract:
The world is changing. With more complex products and services available, shortened life cycles, and shifts in customers behavior due to the increased availability of information, companies needs to explore new capabilities and organizational practices to effectively preserve a competitive advantage through new innovations. A competitive advantage is said to be difficult to create and sustain in today’s markets. Many startups and corporates, are therefore, changing their innovation processes from a traditional linear process to more of an open process. Many scholars have studied this phenomenon from a corporate perspective, leaving a gap in existing literature on how startups are contributing with their innovative and entrepreneurial mindset to the context of open innovation. It is visible that startups are possessing an extensive amount of exploration capabilities, while lacking capabilities related to exploitation. Finding a balance between exploration and exploitation capabilities is an issue for startups due to its limitations of resources. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to distinguish how an innovation hub enables startups with balancing exploration and exploitation capabilities. For this study, the innovation hub of our choosing is Ignite. Based on the literature review and the identified research gaps, the following research question has been formulated to investigate the phenomenon of balancing organizational capabilities from a startup perspective: RQ: How can an innovation hub help startups find a balance between exploration and exploitation capabilities? To properly answer the research question, the chosen research approach was selected as a qualitative research method. The empirical findings were gathered from 11 semi-structured interviews, where nine interviews have been with managers from startups active in Ignite and two interviews with team members from Ignite. In addition to the empirical findings, we developed a proposed framework that explains the whole process of startups being active in Ignite from pre-intervention, addressing challenges related to startups and the reasons why they should engage in being active in an innovation hub, to post-intervention, addressing the possible outcomes received by being active in Ignite. To conclude, this thesis contributes with an understanding on how startups may use a third party, such as Ignite, to get help with the balancing act of exploration and exploitation capabilities. The findings show that the third party is helping the startups with balancing their organizational capabilities in an indirect way. This is done through Ignite’s accurate matchmaking process and their deep understanding about which capabilities the big corporations are looking for, which Ignite gathers from a needs analysis together with the big corporation. From this thesis, startups as well as big corporations, will understand the importance of involving a third party for the purpose of creating and sustaining a competitive advantage by balancing their exploration and exploitation capabilities.

Abstract:
Steel producers that employ niche market strategies are continuously seeking to reduce production cost while maintaining adiverse product mix. The business model is typically based onmarketing of high–strength special or stainless steels. However, the desire to avoid direct cost competition is over time gradually leading towards increased product variety and smaller ordervolumes (tonnes per order) for each product. This thesis analyses how production cost is linked to productvariety in steel strip production. Results are based on new modelsfor assessment of opportunities for performance improvement inhigh product–variety steel production. The need for flexible production processes increases with increasing product variety. Operational capabilities linked to processflexibility determine the extent to which steel producers caneliminate in–process inventory and accomplish close coupling between process steps. Niche market producers that invest inprocess flexibility improvements can lower production costs bothdue to reduced work–in–process and lower energy consumption. An additional benefit is reduced environmental impact. The following problems are addressed: • Development of a method to assess the influence of productvariety on performance in steel production. • Development of models of continuous casting and hotrolling that account for product variety and cost effectswith consideration of varying degrees of process flexibility. • Development of a strategy process model that focus on thestrategic value of operational capabilities related to processflexibility. Investments in operational capabilities regarding process flexibility have a strategic impact. An appreciation for the effectsof process flexibility should permeate the organisation’s daily work since the accumulated contribution of many, seemingly unimportant, incremental changes significantly influences thestrategic opportunities of the company.
Abstract:
This investigation looks at what Head Teachers are doing to make strategic change sustainable. It seeks to determine the ways in which senior leaders are using strategic approaches to build in systems and procedures that will secure improvement over the longer term alongside the short term leadership and operational challenges. The research focuses upon the key theoretical perspectives and conceptualframework for strategic leadership and sustainable improvement in schools today and the review of the literature looks at the concepts of strategy and strategic leadership to articulate how strategic management is central to sustainability. In developing a theory for action it draws upon the literature to build the main areas of research. This qualitative emergent study generates data from semi-structured interviews with ten secondary Lincolnshire Head Teachers. The researchlooks at the situation of the individual schools and semi-structured interviews incorporate both subjective and objective information to demonstrate subjective meanings of events, processes and strategic change measures to enhance sustainable progress within schools. The findings highlight that sustainability is about sustaining all that is good in a school and demonstrate that there is no single solution for achieving sustainable strategic change in schools today. A taxonomy of nine key principles for achieving sustainable strategic change is articulated in the closing chapter and the conclusions reached within this thesis demonstrate that the main driver of sustainable strategic leadership is having a clear moral purpose around which strategic change revolves. This extends to the wider moral purpose of developing partnerships and sharing responsibility across the community. Sustainable strategic change begins within the school with school leaders sharing the vision, developing the people and working to achieve both the short and longer term goals and then binding this together with external partnerships that renew and revive the creative energies of all concerned.

Abstract:
A definition of value, a higher order construct, how it is created and its constituents remains elusive. This research aims to explain value co-creation and its key enablers in the management consulting industry. Service Dominant Logic (S-DL) first published by Vargo & Lusch (2004) has fostered extensive debate ever since, and with the Service Logic theory of the so-called Nordic School of Marketing (Grönroos, 2011b) they have encouraged research on subjects under the optic of value co-creation (S-DL), value facilitation (SL) and exchange of service, arguing that value is only phenomenologically assessed by the customer (S-DL) and that the only real value is customer’s value-in-use (SL). The understanding of how value is co-created has been scarcely researched empirically as, for instance, Aarikka-Stenroos & Jaakkola (2012) have. Capabilities management has been related to a firm’s resources and the Resource-Based View (RBV); however, empirical research relating capabilities to the process of value co-creation in b2b context has also been discussed as sparse (Lindgreen, Hingley, Grant and Morgan, 2012).This research explores interconnectedness of value, relationship-interaction and dynamic capabilities in management consultancy, and responds to the following research question: What arrays of capabilities and interaction are required for management consulting sustained value-facilitation? The subjects of relationship and interaction are discussed as core to value co-creation while investigating the intervening role of dynamic capabilities. A qualitative abductive methodology is applied, founded on a critical realist philosophical argumentation. The iterative deductive-inductive methods involved in the abductive process ideally approach the open ended questions that emerge researching social phenomena. The data is obtained by elite interviews with executive consultants and CXO level customers, who have had profound experience of consulting assisted co-creation initiatives. Four abductive iterations of data collection and analysis are applied, departing from a theoretical framework that emerges from the review of extant literature and that is informed by the research question. The salient constructs from contextually complex discussions are analysed and lastly synthesized in an overarching model. This research contributes mainly in two areas: (1) The identification of relationship/interaction in consulting at the core of value co-creation, and its key characteristics as a dynamic context. Co-creation is proposed as an evolving-adaptive process dependent on relationship through interaction.(2) The identification of capabilities that allow relationship and co-creation and higher order capabilities that develop capabilities, which emerge from deliberate reflection of the consultant’s strategy. Such dynamic capabilities develop and orchestrate capabilities for value facilitation and customer value creation.

Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with an evaluation of decisions and practices of the government of Malaysia and top management of Telekom Malaysia (TM) in the preparation for and after privatisation of the entity. The thesis shows that in reality the Malaysian government has pursued policies contrary to its stated privatisation goals by denying independent decision making in TM and hence the evolution of strategic management practices in the privatised entity. Instead of an independent decision-making body, the top management of TM are little more than acquiescent political and civil service appointees, who are obliged to accept passively directives from the government which clearly will affect the ability to achieve the stated corporate goals of Telecommunications Vision 2005 - to put in place a first class network and organisation which is capable of providing services on a par with those existing in the advanced countries by the year 2005.On the basis of this study, the researcher has arrived at several propositions. The most important contribution of the thesis is that it presents to both the government and top management of TM, recommendations to adopt an appropriate strategic management and long-term approach to achieve the stated goals based on long-term growth, efficiency and higher bumiputra equity, that supports the realisation of TM's ambitious goal of Telecommunications Vision 2005.

Abstract:
In the last three decades, strategic management scholars have explored the organization’s need to reconfigure its capabilities to leverage opportunities in a changing environment. The first objective of this study was to identify the underlying elements of the managerial processes of dynamic capabilities, and to offer a reconceptualization of the dynamic capabilities construct. The second objective of this investigation was to determine how the reconceptualized dynamic capabilities construct could influence the alignment of ordinary capabilities. Findings from this investigation indicate that organizational processes and managerial processes are unique components of dynamic capabilities. In addition, these organizational processes were found to be significantly and positively correlated with the alignment of ordinary capabilities. Furthermore, managerial processes were found to moderate the relationship between organizational processes and one type of ordinary capability alignment (i.e. innovation-operations capability alignment). Taken together, the findings of this study support the notion that dynamic capabilities are context specific, and that understanding how they influence the organization’s ability to change is complex. The developments and findings in this study offer a reconceptualized and empirically tested framework for the capability alignment process, thereby providing a more comprehensive picture of the underlying processes.

Full text
Abstract:
The dynamic capabilities perspective has become one of the most vibrant approaches to strategic management. Despite its growing popularity, it has faced criticism because of ambiguity and contradictions in dynamic capabilities literature. There has been increasing calls to address the fragmentation in the literature and provide empirically collaborated insights if it is to fulfil its potential as a distinct approach to strategic management. The microfoundations research agenda remains an emerging theme in the dynamic capabilities literature and since the overarching emphasis of a microfoundational approach is in the explanatory primacy of the micro-level especially in its relation to macro-level entities, it covers a wide array of subjects at several levels. One of the main criticisms of the microfoundations approach is a lack of multi-level analysis and there has been calls for multi-level theory development to connect levels within particular contexts since dynamic capabilities are path dependent and context-specific. This thesis explores the multi-level nature of dynamic capabilities in the Information Technology Security context and empirically investigates the impact of microfoundations of dynamic capabilities on firm capability renewal and reconfiguration. It overcomes the challenge associated with fragmentation in dynamic capabilities by presenting a conceptual model for the multi-level nature of dynamic capabilities. By explicating where dynamic capabilities reside, we can more purposely impact on them to advance our scholarly understanding and proffer practical managerial interventions to directly enhance specific abilities of sensing, seizing and reconfiguring to achieve superior outcomes. The research employed the Gioia qualitative case study research methodology and research methods used were 35 semi-structured interviews and observations. The research findings suggest that firms renew and reconfigure their capabilities to align with the changing industry and industry standards, and client needs. Firms also renew and reconfigure capabilities and capability framework due to internal strategic organisational learning and to align with firm’s specific business strategies. Capability renewal and reconfiguration is vital to achieve technical and evolutionary fitness. In addition, findings inform that dynamic capabilities in the form of ability to sense, seize and reconfigure exhibit at macro, meso and micro levels. Actor’s external engagement with significant institutions enables superior sensing ability. Accumulated experience is exploited to gain credibility with clients to win business, and demystifying firm processes and clarity of language in firm artefacts achieve superior knowledge articulation and codification processes by actors. Structuring of simple routines and capabilities enable ease of internal knowledge transfer but susceptibility to intellectual property theft by outsiders whereas complex routines and capabilities create challenges for knowledge transfer but are harder for competitors to discern and copy. Drawing on the research findings, the thesis presents a conceptual model for the multi-level microfoundations of dynamic capabilities in knowledge-intensive domains with relevance for theory and practice.

Full text
Abstract:
The reasons behind why some organisations are able to obtain and sustain competitive advantage over others in their chosen markets has been a topic of discussion in several domains of academic literature. The theory of dynamic capabilities is one of the most prevalent conceptualisations of competitive advantage. This school of thought attributes an organisation’s sustained competitive advantage to its ability to sense opportunities, seize those opportunities and transform in line with the changes it is experiencing. However, much of the existing literature has focused its attention on how the cognition, and behavioural capabilities of an organisation’s top management enable the existence of the attributes of sensing, seizing and transforming, and has ignored other levels in the organisational structure, such as middle managers. This has been identified as a gap in the literature. This study explores how the cognitive capabilities of middle managers of an organisation contribute to its ability to obtain and sustain competitive advantage in its chosen markets. Data was collected through fifteen in-depth, semi-structured interviews with middle managers from a South African multidisciplinary professional services firm. The study found that middle managers play a crucial role in the execution of the strategy and business model adaptations formulated by top management, whilst giving valuable input based on practical on-the-ground experience. The research contributed to the literature by showing that middle managers leverage several cognitive capabilities to effectively perform sensing, seizing and transforming activities. These capabilities are deemed to be foundational to middle managers as they span across more than one of the mentioned activities. These comprise; analysis, perception, attention, problem solving, reasoning, empathy and emotional intelligence, social cognition, language and communication, and mental walk-throughs. The study further contributes to the literature by identifying the critical attributes of a work environment that are required for middle managers’ cognitive capabilities to thrive. In this regard, the study highlighted the importance of offering autonomy to middle managers and increasing organisational collaboration. A framework is presented that can aid top management in understanding the origins and development of middle managers’ cognitive capabilities.
