Achimugu, Nemile. "Strategic response in fragmented networks." Thesis, Cranfield University, 2007. http://dspace.lib.cranfield.ac.uk/handle/1826/2359.

Full text
Abstract:
Information explosion, globalisation and the reduction of trade barriers have led to the emergence of global production markets and broader access to a range of products for customers. For manufacturers this has led to managing fragmented networks to deal with more polarised markets with wider variety of products at reduced costs and shorter lifecycles in an increasingly competitive environment. This coupled with the pressure to create shareholder value calls for a dynamic approach in the design and management of their supply chains. Market responsiveness is ability to anticipate and react purposefully within appropriate timescale to changes in the market place in order to maximise shareholder value and customer value. The aim of this research is to develop a model for market responsiveness that will enable organisations to deal with the changing needs of the market. To achieve this aim the research methodology was designed to primarily collect qualitative evidence from three distinct supply chains within different industrial contexts. Contrasting across these contexts has helped to determine if the model is generic enough to be applicable in other contexts. The findings were that value gaps exist between interfaces within organisations and their supply chains. At such gaps value is either created, maintained or lost. Value gaps are the primary reasons why organisational tensions exist as the entities involved are focused on conflicting strategic objectives that lead to behavioural misalignment and ultimately poor response. Therefore the research concludes within a market responsiveness model within which there are frameworks for business performance management and managing the value execution point of which maximum shareholder value and customer value can be created.

Shams, Farshid. "Strategic management of offshore branch campuses in transnational higher education : global synergy versus local responsiveness." Thesis, University of Bath, 2013. https://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.602337.

Full text
Abstract:
This research is at the intersection of strategic management, international business and internationalisation of higher education institutions (HEIs). It focuses on the managerial aspects of higher education institutions with offshore branch campuses. In the past couple of decades the number of offshore branch campuses established by HEIs - mainly universities - has increased dramatically, but most research carried out to date in this field has been anecdotal and the number of theoretical studies in this area is very limited. Thus, the aim of this research is to breach this gap by developing a theoretical framework that is capable of explaining the managerial aspects of foreign branch campus operations. The key research question in this study is how transnational higher education institutions (TNHEIs) strategically manage their offshore branch campuses. In order to address this question, the literature on TNHEIs with regard to managerial complexities is reviewed. By assimilating and reconceptualising this literature, a multidimensional framework is constructed, which encapsulates the most pertinent ramifications of managing an offshore branch campus. The framework has been constructed by drawing on a widely used paradigm in the international business discipline, known as the dichotomy of global integration versus local responsiveness (I-R dichotomy). It helps to portray the TNHEIs’ strategic positions and positional change strategies on three dimensions of curriculum, research activities and staffing.

Scheres, Anouk, and Alan Sanfey. "Individual differences in decision making: Drive and reward responsiveness affect strategic bargaining in economic games." BioMed Central, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/609999.

Full text
Abstract:
BACKGROUND:In the growing body of literature on economic decision making, the main focus has typically been on explaining aggregate behavior, with little interest in individual differences despite considerable between-subject variability in decision responses. In this study, we were interested in asking to what degree individual differences in fundamental psychological processes can mediate economic decision-making behavior.METHODS:Specifically, we studied a personality dimension that may influence economic decision-making, the Behavioral Activation System, (BAS) which is composed of three components: Reward Responsiveness, Drive, and Fun Seeking. In order to assess economic decision making, we utilized two commonly-used tasks, the Ultimatum Game and Dictator Game. Individual differences in BAS were measured by completion of the BIS/BAS Scales, and correlations between the BAS scales and monetary offers made in the two tasks were computed.RESULTS:We found that higher scores on BAS Drive and on BAS Reward Responsiveness were associated with a pattern of higher offers on the Ultimatum Game, lower offers on the Dictator Game, and a correspondingly larger discrepancy between Ultimatum Game and Dictator Game offers.CONCLUSION:These findings are consistent with an interpretation that high scores on Drive and Reward Responsiveness are associated with a strategy that first seeks to maximize the likelihood of reward, and then to maximize the amount of reward. More generally, these results suggest that there are additional factors other than empathy, fairness and selfishness that contribute to strategic decision-making.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to investigate implementation strategies of SwedishManufacturing Companies when establishing in People’s Republic of China, with the objective to determine what strategy that is the most commonly adapted. Strategy is an important approach, which companies apply when deciding what direction a company should take, in terms of financial, structural and operational. This study takes a deeper look into the different strategy approaches related to business expansions and establishment in PRC. By evaluating the intentions of a business expansion in People’s Republic of China, the different strategy approaches are influenced by the choice of strategy. The background is based on previous research and existing theories related to strategy. The theoretical framework of the thesis has its foundation in Porter’s theory of competitive strategy. It has been reshaped by Shi & Gregory (1998), Bartlett and Ghoshol (1998), Miltenberg (2005) and Luthans and Doh (2008). To strengthen the matrixes by Luthan and Doh and Miltenberg to Porter’s theory, a model has been developed and explained to connect the different frameworks to the primary data. In order to fulfill the purpose of this study a cross-sectional design is used. A deductive research approach is followed, and applying questionnaires in order to collect the empirical data necessary to answer the research questions uses a quantitative method. The questionnaires were distributed to a selected sample consisting of 39 Swedish Manufacturing companies that are established in PRC, consisting of a population of 99 Swedish Manufacturing companies in People’s Republic of China. The overall results showed a very scattered placement of the companies within the strategy matrix. Nevertheless, the result indicated that the majority of Swedish Manufacturing companies establishing in the People’s Republic of China choose a Transnational Strategy in a global context. Note that the results should only be used as supportive data and not as a valid source of final information.

Smith, Thelma Gray. "A Principal's Leadership in the Implementation and Support of Inclusion." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/77353.

Full text
Abstract:
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEIA) 2004 requires schools to provide students with disabilities with all the academic opportunities, services, and extracurricular involvement afforded non-disabled peers and with non-disabled peers. Accountability measures resulting from the law, No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB), place increased emphasis on the performance of students with disabilities who must be included in the state assessment system, and meet the levels of proficiencies identified by the state for Adequate Yearly Progress in reading and math no later than 2013-2014. According to the literature, principals felt unprepared to provide the leadership in special education. The purpose of the case study of the leadership of a principal was to provide descriptions of practices in implementing and supporting inclusion so that instruction for children with disabilities can be delivered in general education classrooms. The data were triangulated from an interview with the principal, a focus group discussion of general and special education teachers, and examinations of physical artifacts. The findings revealed that the principal organized the school to support instruction of children with disabilities in general education classroom, planned intentionally for scheduling and grouping of students, expected general education and special education teachers to share equal responsibilities for instruction, used data to monitor the progress of students, developed visible and written procedures for academic and behavioral expectations, and collaborated with parents. Underlying each of the findings was the expectation that the faculty collaborate in understanding the impact of the disability upon learning, and problem solve interventions to positively affect academic outcomes for children with disabilities.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Mobile applications are expected to be fast and responsive to user interaction, despite challenges mobile platforms and devices face in terms of limited computational power, battery, memory, etc. Ensuring that applications are performant is however not trivial, as performance bugs are difficult to detect, fix, and verify. In order for mobile applications and devices to appear perfectly responsive to the user, they need to meet a 60 frames per second frame rate, and keep load times preferably between 0-300 ms. Meeting these expectations means that there is no room for performance bugs, so there is a need for improving and developing better testing tools and strategies in order to help mobile developers improve performance in their applications. This thesis investigates strategies for testing and improving performance in Android applications by conducting a literary study, and a case study with the Spotify Android application. Some of the key findings of this thesis include promising results from tools that visualise sources of performance bugs in the user interface of applications, as well as proposed strategies and tools aimed to help developers profile and improve performance in their Android applications.

Venn, Paul. "Factors affecting responsiveness to teaching strategies in the rehabilitation of acquired memory impairment." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2011. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/1044/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Clinical Psychology Doctorate (Clin.Psy.D) at the University of Birmingham. It comprises a research component (Volume I) and five clinical practice reports (Volume II). Volume I (research component) contains two papers. The first paper is a review of the literature, which examines the extent to which specific cognitive impairments should be taken into account when planning memory rehabilitation interventions based on teaching strategies such as cueing and errorless learning. The second paper is an empirical study which compares the effectiveness of implicit and explicit teaching instructions when using the method of vanishing cues to facilitate learning in people with memory impairment arising from acquired brain injuries. Volume II comprises five clinical practice reports presenting work undertaken in the specialties of mental health (adult and older adult), learning disabilities and neurorehabilitation. The first presents an initial assessment of a 71 year old woman with generalised anxiety alongside formulations of her difficulties from cognitive-behavioural and psychodynamic perspectives. The second report contains a single case experimental design to evaluate the effectiveness of a cognitive rehabilitation intervention in an 81 year old man with Alzheimer’s disease. The third report is a service evaluation addressing the needs of psychological therapists working with adults with Asperger’s Syndrome/High Functioning Autism. The fourth report is a case study relating to a 66 year old man with a learning disability and challenging behaviour. An abstract for the fifth report is included, which presented a case study (assessment, formulation and intervention) of a 52 year old woman with Multiple Sclerosis and generalised anxiety.

Purchasing is the most frequent activity among firms. With shorter product life cycles, suppliers’ ability to respond quickly to product changes and requirements of their buyers is of vital importance to the buying firm’s competitive advantage. It is argued in past researches that purchasing should be elevated to strategic level for the buying firms, such that they can maintain long term competitiveness. However, few studies have considered the impact of supplier’s bargaining power on the effect of buyer’s strategic purchasing on relationship development and responsiveness. It is hence the objective of this study to explore this issue. A survey was conducted to the electronics and information technology industries in Taiwan. The results show that the moderating effect of supplier’s bargaining power on was strong and significant. Some managerial suggestions are provided following the analysis.

Tshipani, Khuthalani Eugene. "An ICT strategic management framework for rapid technological evolution of a state-owned company / Khuthalani Eugene Tshipani." Thesis, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/15613.

Full text
Abstract:
This study was conducted to look into state-owned ICT institutions. The emphasis was on devising a strategic management framework that would be robust and agile, thereby enabling government companies within the ICT sector to rapidly respond to changes in the market and to also enable them to forecast and plan for the future in respect of technology. The main objective of the study was to derive an ICT strategic management framework for the rapid technological evolution of state-owned companies. Further, the study aimed to provide a critical exposition of the factors that affect company ICT strategies; assess the impact of technological changes on company ICT strategies; and propose guidelines on keeping companies‘ ICT strategies responsive to rapid technological changes. Through the literature review as well as an empirical study, common variables and factors that affect a company‘s ICT strategy and its response to technology changes were explored and guidelines were compiled into a framework that will assist SOEs (state-owned enterprises). Through a literature study of available material on the world‘s telecommunication trends and developments in developed nations, some key observations were recorded such as the concept of convergence, which in the main is driven by consumers‘ need for mobility and flexibility, as well as applications with high capacity demands on the one hand and the need for companies and telecommunications operators to be more efficient on the other. Convergence delivers this benefit of efficiency within the market and stimulates competition. Innovation and creativity continue to be the driving force behind the technological evolutions in the ICT sector. The study also considered how both the PEST model and Porter‘s five forces affect these companies. Issues such as the legislative and policy framework of the ICT industry in South Africa were looked at, with emphasis on how they affect ICT parastatals. The study ended with key recommendations and guidelines summed up into a comprehensive framework.

Background: Stroke can cause long-term disability and heavy financial burdens. To improve quality of stroke care, many countries develop various strategies and indicators to measure stroke care. Through a literature review, I found that the impact of improvement strategies on healthcare outcomes is inconsistent, and research studies focus more on a single strategy intervention, rather than the overall stroke improvement strategies in the hospital. Therefore, this research intends to understand current improvement strategies in hospitals by using a questionnaire and evaluating the associations among those strategies and indicators of stroke care. Methods: A structured questionnaire was mailed to 154 hospitals specifically selected for their complete online indicators. This research evaluated the associations of improvement strategies in the hospitals, emergent rescuer responsiveness levels and quality and utilization of stroke care by using multiple regression analysis. Results: The response rate was 61.04%, and the sample was representative. The hospitals that implemented computerized physician order entry were associated with lower length of stay (P=0.042). The hospitals that provided stroke education booklets during discharge were associated with lower medical expenses (P=0.043). The hospitals that had a moderate or severe emergent rescuer responsiveness level of stroke care were associated with lower length of stay (moderate: P=0.001; severe: P=0.007) and lower medical expenses (moderate: P=0.002; severe: P=0.012). Conclusions: Computerized physician order entry and providing stroke education booklets along with emergent rescuer responsiveness level of stroke care lead to better care outcomes. However, these strategies and levels show no significant impact on the process of stroke care, which includes physicians prescribing anticoagulant within 24 and 48 hours and when patients leave.
