Abstract:
Includes abstract.<br>Includes bibliographical references (leaves 86-91).<br>The wide range of the petroleum industry's products as well as the varied value of these products coupled with the global nature of the petroleum industry presents both challenges and opportunities within the petroleum supply chain. It is along this supply chain that challenges for creating value for the customer exist as well the opportunities for reaching this goal. Value chain analysis methodology has been hailed as being capable to lend itself to process improvement challenges faced along supply chains. To achieve this objective, a case study method was used to collect and analyse data. This dissertation identifies and follows one of the supply chains of a petroleum company operating in South Africa to investigate how value chain analysis can be implemented along its supply chain.

Cost management is increasingly being recognized as a vital core competency needed for survival. As companies transition from being vertically integrated to pursuing increasingly outsourced manufacturing strategies, modeling and monitoring the total cost of manufacturing products has become crucial, and complicated. In the context of the automated test equipment industry, this thesis explores the impact of outsourcing on product cost and cost management practices. It examines prevailing cost management practices with reference to design and procurement, as well as methods to leverage information technology and re-engineer business processes to manage "spend" effectively and efficiently. Abstract:
Thesis (M. The idea behind the project is to create a framework for putting supply chain events into a broader supply chain context and assessing their criticality. Such a framework can then be utilized as a starting point for supply chain event management software applications. The problem has been approached from a "micro" point of view, with the analysis and PERT modeling of a single order fulfillment process, and from a "macro" point of view, with the analysis and a very simple model of the inventory itself. Finally, there are important factors that can drive the development and adoption of such systems in the future, including a higher level of supply chain informatization, removal of inter-and intra-company communication barriers, and better software integration technologies to effectively link all the element of the supply chain network.<br>by Esmè Fantozzi.<br>M.Eng.in Logistics

These methods are then classified based on the complexity involved to implement them. As an organization develops a deeper understanding of inventory, it becomes more mature and can apply more complex methods. This sequencing of methods is defined as a three phase maturity model. First, a foundational level of maturity is defined, which quantifies inventory levels based on future demand and business requirements. Second, a transitional level of maturity defines safety stock positioning in a single-echelon supply chain. Finally, the maturity model concludes with an optimal level of maturity that is based on principles of multi-echelon inventory optimization: safety stock at multiple positions of a supply chain. The setting for this paper was the Aerospace industry. Honeywell Aerospace is in the middle of a 3-year effort to re-engineer Sales, Inventory and Operations Planning (SIOP) systems. At the same time, Honeywell Aerospace is standardizing on a uniform implementation of an ERP system. Oppong, George. "The role of strategic supply chain management in liquor retail." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/895.

Full text
Abstract:
The underlying objective of this research was to assess the extent to which an efficient supply chain can help retail businesses; particularly liquor businesses to manage their business risks. The case study firm for the research was Big Daddy’s Group, one of the leading independent liquor distribution and retailing firms in South Africa. In order to achieve the objective of the research, a review of relevant literature was done. It began with literature review of retailing in general, highlighting on the major roles they play and the modern trends in the industry. Afterwards the literature was narrowed down to liquor retailing. This was done to ascertain the unique characteristics of that aspect of retailing including the regulations guiding the industry and the specific business risks in that business. The final part of the literature review was on specific concepts and management models such as value chain, supply chain as well as business risk and its management. The literature highlighted the means by which the retailer creates value for the customer and the inherent risks in the industry. There was the indication of supply chain being a key component of the value creating activities (value chain) of the business, and serving as a tool in mitigating possible risks. The literature provided the theoretical proposition (hypothesis) for the assessment of the case study findings from the Big Daddy’s Group. The data collection exercise was done by means of a questionnaire complimented by personal interview. Due to the nature of the firm, in terms of structure and operations, two persons, with considerable insight into the business, the director and the sales/area manager were interviewed for the exercise. The questions posed were categorised into seven key areas of retail operations such as product range, imports, customer awareness, marketing and advertising, supply chain and human resource. The findings were compared with the theoretical propositions developed in the literature review, and the pattern matching logic technique was used to determine the existence or not of any similar predictions or differences. The risks identified in the findings were analysed with the logic of an efficient supply chain as the mitigating tool. The conclusion was that supply chain management is key to the value creation activities and hence the survival of the business. The recommendation therefore is that the retailer should ensure the efficient management of the supply chain network since it has the potential to reduce the inherent risks in their operations.

Abstract:
Today’s dynamic and increasingly competitive market had expanded complexities for global businesses pressuring companies to start leveraging on Big Data solutions in order to sustain the global competitions by becoming more data-driven in managing their supply chains. The main purpose of this study is twofold, 1) to explore the implications of applying analytics designing supply chain networks, 2) to investigate the link between operational and strategic management levels when making strategic decisions using Analytics.Qualitative methods have been applied for this study to gain a greater understanding of the Supply Chain Analytics phenomenon. An inductive approach in form of interviews, was performed in order to gain new empirical data. Fifteen semi-structured interviews were conducted with professional individuals who hold managerial roles such as project managers, consultants, and end-users within the fields of Supply Chain Management and Big Data Analytics. The received empirical information was later analyzed using the thematic analysis method. The main findings in this thesis relatively contradicts with previous studies and existing literature in terms of connotations, definitions and applications of the three main types of Analytics. Furthermore, the findings present new approaches and perspectives that advanced analytics apply on both strategic and operational management levels that are shaping supply chain network designs.

Abstract:
Some business leaders in the manufacturing industry lack strategies to optimize green supply chain management strategies that increase profitability while reducing the carbon footprint. The lack of green supply chain strategies sub optimizes the use of resources business leaders use to meet their financial goals. The purpose of this qualitative single case study was to explore successful green supply chain strategies leaders used to increase profitability while reducing the carbon footprint. The participants were 7 business leaders in one manufacturing organization headquartered in Massachusetts who have sophisticated green supply chain strategies in place. The natural resource-based view theory was the conceptual framework for this study. Data were collected through semistructured interviews and organizational documents. Through thematic analysis, 3 key themes emerged: environmental management strategies, profit-increasing strategies, and governance strategies. The findings of this study might be of value to business leaders to reduce costs and create sustainable, competitive supply chains using responsible methods. The implications for social change include the potential for leaders to preserve finite natural resources for future generations and reduce the carbon footprint of manufacturing organizations.

Abstract:
Thesis (S.M. in System Design and Management)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Engineering Systems Division, System Design and Management Program, 2010.<br>Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.<br>Includes bibliographical references.<br>The Global Business Climate has been rapidly changing and has become more competitive. Enterprise now not only needs to operate at a lower cost to compete, it must also develop its own core competencies to distinguish itself from competitors and stand out in the market. The focus has now moved towards improving operational efficiency to stay competitive. Supply Chain is one of the important areas which almost every company is currently working to improve their operation efficiency. Improving operational efficiency in supply chain has three aspects including improving supply chain strategies, following better supply chain management practices, and aligning supply chain strategy with overall business strategy. Our thesis research objective is to understand what policies, capabilities, and strategies of an enterprises leads to best supply chain management. The research is cross industry, across all supply chain management domain and will shed light on what makes companies "best performer" by identifying and exploring the distinctive capabilities required in five key supply chain domains that contribute to high performance in the relevant operational metrics. The domains studied in our research are supply chain planning, fulfillment, service management, product lifecycle management, and, manufacturing. Another objective of our thesis is to relate domain performance of the firm with the firm's value proposition. The three value propositions considered in the thesis are product leadership/innovation, cost competitiveness, and customer service.<br>by Nitin Gulati & Amar Sharma.<br>S.M.in System Design and Management

Abstract:
This Record of Study contains the details of an optimization model developed for Shell Oil Co. This model will be used during the strategic design process of a supply chain for a new technology commercialization. Unlike traditional supply chain deterministic optimization, this model incorporates different levels of uncertainty at suppliers' nominal capacity. Because of the presence of uncertainty at the supply stage, the objective of this model is to define the best diversification and safety stock level allocated to each supplier, which minimize the total expected supply chain cost. We propose a Monte Carlo approach for scenario generation, a two-stage non-linear formulation and the Sample Average Approximation (SAA) procedure to solve the problem near optimality. We also propose a simple heuristic procedure to avoid the nonlinearity issue. The sampling and heuristic optimization procedures were implemented in a spreadsheet with a user's interface. The main result of this development is the analysis of the impact of diversification in strategic sourcing decisions, in the presence of stochastic supply disruptions.

The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.<br>Includes bibliographical references (leaf 55).<br>This thesis is based on an internship at Honeywell Aerospace's Integrated Supply Chain (ISC) Leadership division. This work focuses on the role and use of analytical cost models in the strategy development process. The scope of ISC strategic decisions encompasses Honeywell Aerospace's global footprint of external and internal suppliers, and includes insourcing, outsourcing, transition and consolidation activities. The current practice within Honeywell Aerospace is to construct a Transition, Migration, and Integration (TMI) model which calculates the net present benefit associated with a specific transition's spending and savings. This model is the primary tool for strategic plan development. This work looks at the use of the TMI model for strategic planning with the intent of addressing concerns related to the model's complexity and accuracy. This work also develops the framework for estimating a confidence range within the TMI model to provide better visibility to the potential range of financial outcome. An additional tool used in the development of the strategic plan is the Landed Cost model.<br>(cont.) The Landed Cost model is used to calculate the steady state total cost associated with a particular supply chain. Historically within Honeywell Aerospace ISC planning, the Landed Cost model has been used to much less of a degree than the TMI model. This work develops the role of the Landed Cost model and establishes a framework for estimating labor, logistics, inventory, and tax costs associated with manufacturing products in a variety of global regions. While this work focuses on developing analytical tools, developments and recommendations are provided in the context of the overall strategic decision process. Examples are provided to highlight the major cost drivers associated with a particular transitional activity or supply chain design. Improving the analytical component of the decision process allows ISC Leadership to more accurately and effectively identify tactics for improving operational efficiency and identify potential growth opportunities in emerging regions.<br>by Todd Robinson.<br>S.M.<br>M.B.A.

Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering; and, (M.B.A.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Management; in conjunction with the Leaders for Manufacturing Program at MIT, 2003.<br>Includes bibliographical references (p. 138).<br>Outsourcing is becoming the norm in business today. This is a natural insight from the management philosophy of the 80's and early 90's of doing only what is "Core" to the business. A company, if their main focus is to keep their margins as high as possible, will focus on what gives their company a competitive advantage and differentiates them from the competition. To The Firm, all other tasks outside of these advantages are superfluous and unnecessary. It is only rational, in this management paradigm, to get rid of, or outsource, all of these activities that take scarce resources away from what the company considers core. The next logical question is: "How to conduct an analysis for outsourcing decision making." Current methodologies coalesce cost alternative analysis with a strategic "gut feel" from management to make decisions that will last multiple cycles into the future. Cost analysis is basic. However, strategic analysis is far reaching, impacts the company's future capabilities, and is difficult to evaluate. This thesis proposes a Decision Support System (DSS) for evaluating the strategies of outsourcing and determining the impacts on The Firm. A thorough review of industry and academic literature on outsourcing, analysis of historic outsourcing results, and discussion of current capability concerns has led to the development of six strategic factors: Customer Experience, Technical Clockspeed, Industry Climate, Supply Chain Excellence, Product Architecture, and Competitive Position. Included is an exhaustive discussion of these strategic factors, strategic matrices for evaluating the business climate, development of excel spreadsheets with questions for evaluation of these factors and matrices, development of a database for knowledge transfer, and implementation of the DSS in the organization.<br>by Richard Philip Nardo.<br>M.B.A.<br>S.M.

Abstract:
The supply chain management discipline suggests that information sharing is paramount when attempting to achieve cost reductions and quality improvements. In many cases, the traditional accounting data used to support strategic decisions reflect inaccurate supply chain costs. This research explores the applications of managerial costing techniques, and how they can be used to improve the decision making capabilities of firms in the aerospace and transportation industries. The methodology used to address the research questions consisted of a hybrid of the grounded theory and multiple-case study methods. The objective of this research was to present the antecedents and barriers associated with implementing supply chain costing, and the impact that costing approaches have on strategic decision making. The research identifies a theoretical model that can be used to explain the relationships and themes associated with supply chain costing and strategic decision making. Evidence suggests that there is some movement to implement managerial accounting techniques within these two industries to capture supply chain costing information. However, the reliance on traditional financial accounting suggests that the overarching principles of supply chain management and information sharing amongst of partner firms has yet to be realized.

Abstract:
The purpose of this research was to find the relationship that exists between supply chain strategies and supply chain management practices at manufacturing companies. A sample of 195 firms in Colombia was used. Data analysis was performed in three phases. Initially, an exploratory factor analysis was carried out to identify the dimensions underlying each construct and derive, from the literature, a parsimonious configuration of supply chain management strategies and practices. Then, using a confirmatory factor analysis, internal consistency and degree of fit of the measurement models was evaluated. Finally, a structural equation model was built to test the formulated hypotheses (CMIN/DF=1.865, RMSEA=0.067, CFI=0.884, IFI=0.888, PNFI=0.623). Results in terms of correspondence were dissimilar, as a positive and statistically significant link was found between the constructs lean supply chain strategy and relationship with supply chain partners (H1a, y11=0.750, p<0.01), lean supply chain strategy and information management (H1b, y21=0.705, p<0.01) and between agile supply chain strategy and relationship with supply chain partners (H2a, y12=0.420, p<0.01). However, links between lean supply chain strategy and postponement (H1c, y31=-0.182, p>0.01), agile supply chain strategy and information management (H2b, y22=0.201, p>0.01) and agile supply chain strategy and postponement (H2c, y32=0.227, p>0.01) were not supported by empirical evidence. This allowed concluding that planning and formulating a specific supply chain strategy must involve a joint deployment of the practices appropriate for materializing it and that not all supply chain management practices support fulfilling the goals defined for the chain. For future work, including an analysis of the effect of variables such as demand uncertainty, company size or type of industry in the evaluated relationship is suggested. The importance of longitudinal measurements or evaluations with a qualitative approach to understand the phenomenon being studied is also mentioned.<br>Tesis

Abstract:
Thesis: M. Eng. in Supply Chain Management, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Supply Chain Management Program, 2019<br>Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.<br>Includes bibliographical references (pages 72-75).<br>The rapid growth in e-commerce volumes, coupled with customer expectations of faster, flexible and cheaper parcel deliveries is increasing the pressure on retailers to design the most efficient delivery network. Collection-and-delivery points (CDPs) allow for the aggregation of demand and enable reductions in travel time and costs. CDPs also help minimize additional tours arising due to failed deliveries or failed pickups for returns. We formulate an optimization model that integrates CDPs in the design of the overall distribution network, including the location of upstream transshipment facilities. The model accounts for changes in demand density due to the placement of CDPs. It considers demand aggregation at the CDP for both forward and return flows, and the impact of failed deliveries and failed return pickups on the routing cost. The model considers multiple different route options and solves them using extended routing cost approximation formulae thus allowing the implementation of the model on large-scale problems. We then apply the model to solve a real-world case study on the last-mile distribution network of a major Brazilian e-commerce retailer. The results demonstrate that failed deliveries and failed return pickups increase both the last-mile cost and the overall cost of distribution, and CDPs effectively reduce these costs by aggregating the demand and minimizing travel time.<br>by Himanshu Rautela.<br>M. Abstract:
Maintaining the current course of the global society is threatening the human civilization. The urgency of the situation, understood from empirical research, has caused many researchers to call for more prescriptive research as a necessary supplement, to better support decision making for sustainability. While policymakers need to direct and stimulate sustainable production and consumption through, e.g., legislation and market phenomena such as eco-labelling, business represents a significant proportion of the necessary resources, capabilities and mechanisms for the innovation needed for a transition towards sustainability. However, while businesses more and more realize the self-interest in working proactively with sustainability, there is a desire for better support for how to do this also from this end. Such support needs to consider a significant shift going on in business; that individual businesses tend to no longer compete as autonomous entities, but rather as supply chains. Thus, no company is more sustainable than its supply chain partners. Therefore, sustainable supply chain management (SSCM) as a business function, and sustainable procurement as a subset thereof, plays an increasingly pivotal role for sustainable development. The overall aim of this thesis is to contribute to sustainable development by studying how three phenomena; eco-labelling, procurement and supply chain management are related to each other and to a strategic sustainability perspective, and to suggest how these phenomena can be integrated with such a perspective to provide better support for decision making and innovation for sustainability. For this purpose, a framework for strategic sustainable development, including a definition of sustainability and generic guidelines to inform stepwise strategic plans towards sustainability, is used as a foundational methodology. The development of new approaches is also based on case studies with eco-labelling and sustainable public procurement bodies, businesses and public institutions. Information is collected by shadowing of criteria development and collaboration processes, interviews and literature studies. While the findings point to a clear rational for all of the phenomena and several strengths in existing schemes and practices, the findings also point to several shortcomings. Sustainability is not defined, and as a result, there is no foundation for strategic and proactive approaches. Furthermore, decisions are not based on considerations of all dimensions of sustainability, the whole life cycle of products, all relevant stakeholders and a long-term perspective. As a result, the full potential of these phenomena for contributing to sustainable development is not utilized. This thesis prescribes enhanced processes for eco-labelling, sustainable procurement and SSCM, and shows how these can support organisations in developing from reacting individually on known sustainability-related problems to acting proactively and collaboratively in supply chains, in a coordinated and economically viable way, on society’s remaining gap to the full scope of ecological and social sustainability.

Abstract:
Inefficient supply chains result in unsold inventory and unfilled customer orders, posing a significant risk to company profitability and consumer satisfaction. The purpose of this single case study was to explore strategies supply chain managers in the manufacturing industry used to match the level of unsold inventory in the supply chain with customer demand consistently. Porter's value chain provided the conceptual framework for the study. A sample of 5 experienced supply chain managers from a global manufacturing company headquartered in the midwestern United States participated in semistructured interviews. Each participant provided company supply chain documentation for triangulation. Data analysis followed Yin's 5 stages of data analysis and yielded 4 themes: define policies and processes, develop collaborative partnerships, leverage technology, and consider the end-to-end supply chain. The themes are the foundation of successful supply chain management strategies that have improved matching of unsold inventory in the supply chain to customer demand. Study findings benefit both supply chain leaders and consumers by providing the potential to improve consistency in meeting customer demand with less inventory in the supply chain, resulting in customer satisfaction, business growth, and stable employment. The findings may contribute to positive social change by helping supply chain leaders create thriving businesses with satisfied employees and customers who are willing to spend their time and money contributing to community growth, economic stability, and enhanced social conditions.

Abstract:
Logistics managers work to create practices that reduce technostress, which is associated with diminished productivity in supply chain management. The purpose of this multiple case study was to explore the mitigation strategies that logistics managers at distribution centers used to reduce technostress with their employees in the Los Angeles County, California area. The conceptual framework included in this study was the sociotechnical systems theory. Semistructured interviews were conducted with 6 logistics managers from large distribution centers who implemented mitigation strategies that demonstrably reduced technostress with their employees. Public documents and physical artifacts reviewed in this study included productivity assessment tools, information and communication technology system training materials, technostress mitigation instruments, and information from technological devices. Data were analyzed through a process of pattern matching, cross-case synthesis, and systematic text condensation. The findings included 6 themes: reliance on internal information technology experts; hiring temporary experts; maintaining communication and training; using time management skills and organizing priorities; identification and understanding of employee differences; and implementing well-being, fitness, and health programs. These findings could contribute to positive social change by providing logistics managers with strategies to reduce technostress, which could lead to improved employee well-being, better work conditions, and increased productivity for greater company profitability that could produce a more thriving and prosperous community.

Abstract:
Indian pharmaceutical companies spend one-third of their revenue from supply chain management (SCM) activities due to inherently poor transportation infrastructure. SCM is a vital function for many companies, as it is usually employed to lower expenses and increase sales for the company. SCM costs are higher in India than they are in other areas of the world, amounting to 13% of India's GDP. The purpose of this study was to explore SCM strategies Indian business leaders in the pharmaceutical industry have used to reduce the high costs associated with SCM. This study used a single case study research design and semistructured interviews to collect data from 3 SCM business leaders working in Indian pharmaceutical organizations and possessing successful experience in using SCM strategies to reduce high costs. Goldratt's (1990) theory of constraints was used as the conceptual framework for this study to identify challenges associated with SCM strategies. Data from semistructured interviews, observations, and company documents were processed and analyzed using data source triangulation, grouping the raw data into key themes. The following 3 themes emerged: distribution and logistics challenges, impact of SCM processes, and best practices and solutions. The implications for positive social change include the potential to reduce supply chain risk, which could lead to lower product prices for consumers, increased stakeholder satisfaction, and a higher standard of living.

Abstract:
Disruptions in the supply chain are becoming more common as supply chains become more complex, and supply chain managers of warehouse distribution centers need strategies to minimize the impact of disruptions. In this study, the focus of the research questions was on strategies supply chain managers could use to mitigate the impact of disruptions. The conceptual frameworks for this study were the resource dependence theory and the normal accident theory, which link supply chain disruptions with resource availability and the inability to eliminate disruptions. An exploratory case study involved exploring how supply chain managers of a warehouse distribution center in Jacksonville, Florida, successfully used strategies to mitigate the impact of a disruption after it occurred. Data came from responses to semistructured interview questions from these managers (n = 6) and archival documents related to policies, procedures, and business continuity planning of a warehouse distribution center in Jacksonville, Florida. I analyzed the data by using Atlas.ti qualitative analysis software. There were 6 themes that emerged: collaborating to minimize the impact of disruptions, disruptions precursors, identifying and assessing impact of disruptions, resources used to minimize impact of disruption, strategies to mitigate disruptions, and supplier relationships. The results could contribute to social change by minimizing the negative effects disruptions have on an organization's profitability and performance. Social change can come from business leaders who are able to maintain and sustain their businesses after a supply chain disruption has occurred.

Abstract:
Information explosion, globalisation and the reduction of trade barriers have led to the emergence of global production markets and broader access to a range of products for customers. For manufacturers this has led to managing fragmented networks to deal with more polarised markets with wider variety of products at reduced costs and shorter lifecycles in an increasingly competitive environment. This coupled with the pressure to create shareholder value calls for a dynamic approach in the design and management of their supply chains. Market responsiveness is ability to anticipate and react purposefully within appropriate timescale to changes in the market place in order to maximise shareholder value and customer value. The aim of this research is to develop a model for market responsiveness that will enable organisations to deal with the changing needs of the market. To achieve this aim the research methodology was designed to primarily collect qualitative evidence from three distinct supply chains within different industrial contexts. Contrasting across these contexts has helped to determine if the model is generic enough to be applicable in other contexts. The findings were that value gaps exist between interfaces within organisations and their supply chains. At such gaps value is either created, maintained or lost. Value gaps are the primary reasons why organisational tensions exist as the entities involved are focused on conflicting strategic objectives that lead to behavioural misalignment and ultimately poor response. Therefore the research concludes within a market responsiveness model within which there are frameworks for business performance management and managing the value execution point of which maximum shareholder value and customer value can be created.

Abstract:
Supply chains have become increasingly unstable due to unanticipated disruptive events, which undermines a firm's capacity to achieve a competitive market advantage and increase profitability. The disruption of a supply chain is essential to supply chain managers, as the interruption can be expensive, and the goods and services lost can negatively affect the entire supply chain. The purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to explore strategies that manufacturing firm managers use to mitigate supply chain disruptions to remain profitable. The population consisted of 4 supply chain managers from 2 manufacturing firms located in the southern region of eastern Virginia. The conceptual framework for this study was the contingency theory of fit. Data were collected from semistructured interviews, company documents, and publicly available information. Based on the thematic data analysis, 3 emergent themes developed as collaboration and information sharing, information technology and supply chain risk, and use of multiple suppliers. The implications for positive social change include potential increased employment opportunities and salaries, investments in community projects, and enhanced consumer spending in the local community, thereby raising the standard of living and social well-being of local community residents.

Abstract:
O trabalho considera o atual cenário e os desafios estratégicos enfrentados pelas empresas jornalísticas no mercado brasileiro, constatando a necessidade das empresas implementarem ações para melhorar os fatores de rentabilidade do negócio, agregando valor para o acionista, para o anunciante e para o leitor.<br>The objective of this dissertation is to produce an analysis of the supply chain of the Brazilian press industry based on the concept of strategic cost management. The discussion stems from the necessity of the Brazilian newspaper industry, that is nowadays facing important evolution, to become more competitive and to satisfy advertisers and readers continuously more demanding and to face the increasing challenges derived from the competition between medias. In this way, it is fundamental to introduce new concepts of management, with focus on the reduction of operational costs of transformation and transport all over the chain, with simultaneous improvement of the quality of the newspaper as perceived by the clients, either readers or advertisers. In the newspaper segment the supply chain includes the process management and the use of techniques that allow integration between all links of the chain, since the access to the primary materials either physical or digital, until the service to the readers or advertisers. The analysis is based on the structure of the concept of strategical cost management that is supported on three pillars: analysis of the value chain, strategical positioning and cost drivers analysis ateach point that adds value to the product. The research approaches the importance of the supply chain management, emphasizing the management of the logistics costs and the value chain concept, considering the cost elements and describing the main operations of purchasing, transporting, and storage of all raw material, production and physical distribution of the newspaper to the readers. The work considers the present scenario and strategical challenges faced by press companies in the Brazilian market, evidencing the necessity of the companies to implement actions to improve the yield factors of the business, adding value to the shareholders, advertisers and readers.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this study is to explore green sourcing in supply chain management by the example of two large organisations. Design/methodology/approach – This study followed an iterative cycle of reviewing literature and empirics as well as conducting analysis and discussion. The literature gathered for this thesis was collected by reviewing ten academic journals as well as publications found through database search. Empirical data was collected from two case organisations, ABB Robotics and Vattenfall, through interviews, internal documents and public statements. The empirical data was analysed separately for each case organisation by use of an analytical model constructed from the literature findings. Thereafter, similarities and differences between the organisations were discussed as well as the thesis’ contributions to green sourcing literature. Findings – We found that although both ABB Robotics and Vattenfall incorporate environmental sustainability to some degree in their respective sourcing processes, their individual performance differed. The main difference between the organisations was found to be the visibility and managerial drive towards the realisation of environmental goals within the sourcing department. From our observations, it was found that Vattenfall to a large extent embraced their environmental goals and that these trickled down to the sourcing department. ABB Robotics on the other hand had numerous environmental goals on corporate level but these lacked visibility in the sourcing department. In comparison to our literature findings is was found that for environmental goals, Vattenfall was in more alignment with the suggestions by the scholars. For the other identified areas important for green sourcing, that being supplier assessment, supplier performance evaluation and supplier collaboration, both organisations were more aligned with our literature findings. Practical implications – In this thesis, four primary elements of green sourcing have been identified: environmental goals, supplier assessment, supplier performance evaluation, and supplier collaborations. Out of these, we found that the first element, environmental goals, is an enabler for the other elements of green sourcing to further evolve and is therefore essential for green sourcing. Originality/value – By looking beyond public statements and policies of environmental sustainability, this thesis has provided a unique insight in how two large organisations have implemented environmental sustainability in practice, from a sourcing perspective.

Abstract:
Businesses with global supply chains typically have a minimum of 1 interruption to their supply chain annually, which can decrease profitability and affect overall company performance. The purpose of this multiple case study was to explore strategies personal care business supply chain managers used to mitigate supply chain disruption risk. The targeted population was 9 supply chain managers working in 5 different Fortune 500 consumer packaged goods personal care companies in the northeastern United States who have successfully used strategies to mitigate supply chain disruptions. Corporate risk management was used as the conceptual framework of the study to determine how company leaders plan for supply chain disruptions and how leaders prioritize and resource implementation and assessment of these plans. Data collection included semistructured interviews, with review of each company's documents as the secondary source of data. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis. Two main themes emerged: identification of a qualified alternative supplier is a common strategy in supply chain disruption mitigation plans, and business top management support is essential in the execution of supply chain disruption plans and strategies. Results of this study might contribute to social change by empowering supply managers to make alternative choices relative to suppliers that will make products more affordable to consumers. An empowered supply management team leads to high return of investments for companies, which can support employment and additional tax revenue to support social programs.

Abstract:
In today global business market, concepts are moving towards inter-national and inter-firm in contrary to older days. This has made companies explore ways to leverage their supply chains, and to evaluate the role of suppliers in their activities. One result has been the increased outsourcing of activities and performance. This has heightened the role of suppliers ever more.Consequently, in order to maintain competitive in the market and to be able to satisfy the knowledgeable end customer, suppliers must be completely aligned with the core company and its objectives and performances. This goal is only gained through strategic benchmarking towards Supplier Development. With a large number of suppliers to deal with, it won’t be feasible to have partnership relationship with each. The strategic approach is to classify them in a manner suitable for the company and only then start from top of the list setting goals for the most prioritized. Before making any attempt in Supplier Relationship Development, the company must start from within setting the right mindset from top down, inside its own ground. Only then Supplier development will be aligned with the objectives of the company and the program will be integrated and successful. This research sought after ways to develop a strategic and systematic method of dealing with suppliers. This guideline was classified as a step by step map of a Supplier Development program. The study was conducted for Volvo Penta Vara Company, and as part of its Supply Chain Development Program. The findings from the company and literature were compared and analyzed and finally guidelines were developed. This report is the last part of the master’s studies in Industrial Engineering-Logistics at University of Borås. It gave us the opportunity to use what we had learnt during the programme. Considering the broadness of the subject we were after, this report meant a lot of work. However, this was the challenge we wanted and an intriguing journey where we learned a lot along the way.

Abstract:
Supply chains have become more complex in the global economy, which has made supply chain disruptions inevitable. Disruptions can cause loss of profitability and hinder business growth. The goal of this multiple case study was to explore strategies to mitigate the effects of disruption in grocery store supply chains. The conceptual framework for this study was the resource dependency theory, which stipulates that firms rely on other businesses in the external environment for critical resources to create a competitive edge. Four purposively selected participants from 4 grocery store businesses in Northwest Arkansas participated in semistructured interviews and provided organizational documentation for this study. The participants were supply chain managers who had knowledge about disruptions and had successfully mitigated disruptions in their grocery stores' supply chains. Yin's 5-step process was used to analyze data, which involved compiling the database, disassembling data, reassembling data, interpreting data, and making a conclusion. Four themes emerged from the data analysis: supply chain partners' collaboration, multiple supply base and supplier qualification, inventory management, and information technology and communication. The uninterrupted flow of grocery merchandise to the community could result in a positive social change by helping to ensure that community members have timely access to food.

Abstract:
In a competitive business environment that requires strategy and innovation to improve the bottom line, supply chain management has been vital in creating competitive advantage. Increasingly, companies are also identifying sustainability as an opportunity to create competitive advantage. This project explores supply chains as a leverage point in advancing sustainable development. Corporations have developed different tools to interact with their suppliers on sustainability. Three of these devices were analyzed against a framework for strategic sustainable development to identify some of their strengths and weaknesses. A general set of criteria for sustainable supply chain management devices that employs a strategic, whole-systems perspective was then developed.

Thesis (M.B.A.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Management; and, (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Engineering Systems Division; in conjunction with the Leaders for Global Operations Program at MIT, 2013.<br>Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.<br>Includes bibliographical references (p. 136-138).<br>This thesis covers work done at Tracks Energy, a regulated utility, to develop a strategic roadmap for supply chain process improvement. The focus of Tracks Energy has always been on keeping the lights on and the gas flowing for its customers, and the organizational structure of the company has been aligned by functional expertise to accomplish this goal. Existing supply chain operations span across the areas of responsibility for four senior executives and ten different operational groups. The cost and responsiveness of the supply chain has been negatively impacted by groups working to improve performance directly associated with their tasks, at the expense of the supply chain as a complete system. We propose a methodology for developing a strategic supply chain process improvement roadmap based on process map development, benchmarking, and data analysis to outline projected performance. We also present two different inventory models for developing inventory policies based on minimizing total material cost. The first inventory policy model applies a common framework based on stochastic optimization using normal distribution assumptions for demand and lead time. The objective of this model is to minimize costs over an infinite horizon given desired service levels. The second model is a multi-period model adapted from a robust framework. The objective of the second model is to minimize costs given unfavorable demand bounded by potential values unrestricted by a specific probability distribution function. The strategic roadmap for supply chain process improvements presented in this thesis is currently being pursued through the development of a newly developed supply chain management team. The opportunities presented as a strategic roadmap represent the potential for significant capital and operational savings by focusing on the end to end supply chain over individual department functions.<br>by Brent E.
