Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to discuss and propose a taxonomy of approaches to the strategic planning of knowledge management (KM). The concept of KM strategy is relatively recent and has been developed based on the assumption that any KM programme requires the definition of long-term goals, resources and plans, i.e. a KM strategic planning. Empirical evidence shows that the conditions for the successful implementation of KM can change from a company to another and in relation to the external context, and this may call for different appropriate approaches to KM planning. Devising access control systems to support needs and capabilities of users, as well as the security requirements of organisations, is a key challenge faced in many of today’s business environments. If users are to behave securely, they must not be overburdened with unworkable authentication policies and methods. Yet the prevailing alphanumeric password can be a double-edged sword: secure passwords are inherently difficult to recall and vice-versa. Consequentially, a growing number of alternatives are emerging. In this chapter, the authors describe one novel scheme - a musical password. Musipass was designed with the user in mind and is tailored toward the task of authentication on the Web, where biometric and token-based systems have proved unsuccessful in replacing the flawed, yet prevalent traditional password. This chapter, which includes discussion on current thinking in the field of authentication, will be of interest to information managers, security practitioners, and HCI professionals.

Abstract:
There is no doubt that media plays a key role in modern societies, as it has become the main source for the formation of collective awareness among citizens around the world. In light of the real vile war the Arab world has been witnessing against terrorism, media has become a major player in the confrontation. Today, the Arab world is facing terrorist and fanatic attacks that take religion as a cover for its atrocities and hideous actions, disturbing the peace and amity in communities, and causing a lot of harm to innocent people, destruction of infrastructure, and devastating impact on economy and the social structure. Unfortunately, Jordan's media—as is the case with other Arab media—seems to have issues with their adopted strategies to deal with terrorism, its causes, and influencing factors. The chapter provides the details and findings of a study that attempts to characterize the approach adopted by Jordan's media coverage of terrorism and to investigate and appraise the strategic value of such approach, leading to the recommendation for a more effective strategy that is based on proper understanding of the political, social, and economic environment and other key factors.

Abstract:
Sustainability in industrial organizations has become a predominant concept in the 21st century due to environmental regulations, economic importance, and social obligations. In this context, sustainable supplier selection plays an epochal role for taking strategic business decisions. So, a systematic approach is required to deal with the sustainable factors. By integrating the three pillars of sustainability, namely economic, environmental, and social factors, this chapter presents an integrated model for supplier selection from a sustainability perspective. The proposed framework combines analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and quality function deployment (QFD) methods to deal with the sustainable criteria. Finally, suppliers are ranked using VIse Kriterijumska Optimizacija kompromisno Resenja (VIKOR) method. The proposed framework is used to analyze a case study of a dairy company, but it can also be implemented for sustainable supplier selection in any industries. The study brings an artefact for managers to effectively analyze suppliers with the integrated decision-making model.

Abstract:
A friend who had been deputy national intelligence officer when Gregory Treverton was vice-chairman under Joseph Nye cautioned him that “this is not your father’s National Intelligence Council”. And indeed it wasn’t. Substantively, the biggest change was in mission—the enormous addition of current intelligence support to the government’s policy committees. That meant the NIC was in the thick of things, but it also meant than finding time for more strategic work was a constant frustration—all in the context of an administration trying to cope with crises from Ukraine to ISIS, from Afghanistan to Ebola. Procedurally, the biggest change was the creation, first of the director of national intelligence, and later of the national intelligence managers. The latter, especially, will remain a work in progress: it does let the NIC focus on what it does best, analysis, but at some cost in prestige and time spent in bureaucratic jockeying—the “black Suburban” issue: who goes to White House policy meetings.

Abstract:
Nixon’s policy of détente eventually led the United States and the Soviet Union to sign an arms agreement in Moscow in 1972 at what became known as the first Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT). While symbolically the negotiations were considered significant, they did not do a great deal to limit the arms race. Nixon’s resignation in 1974 left the future of SALT in the hands of Vice President Gerald Ford. The treaty was scheduled to expire that year, and the longtime congressman from Michigan was determined to make progress with Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev. However, due to difficulties during the SALT II negotiations and Ford’s abbreviated presidency, Jimmy Carter inherited the unfinished arms control negotiations when he took the oath of office in early 1977. As American and Soviet negotiators focused on finalizing the SALT II arms agreement, Commentary, National Review, and Human Events expressed their concern over the ongoing debate between the two superpowers about nuclear and chemical weapons. That contentious public policy issue was not simply about arms control but was symbolic of the state of American foreign policy itself.

Most organizations in all sectors of industry, commerce, and government are fundamentally dependent on their information systems (IS) and would quickly cease to function should the technology (preferably information technology–IT) that underpins their activities ever come to halt. The development and governance of proper IT infrastructure may have enormous implications for the operation, structure, and strategy of organizations. IT and IS may contribute towards efficiency, productivity, and competitiveness improvements of both interorganizational and intraorganizational systems. On the other hand, successful organizations manage IT function in much the same way that they manage their other strategic functions and processes. This, in particular, means that they understand and manage risks associated with growing IT opportunities, as well as critical dependence of many business processes on IT and vice-versa. IT risk management issues are not only marginal or ‘technical’ problems but become more and more a ‘business problem.’ Therefore, in this chapter, a corporate IT risk management model is proposed and contemporary frameworks of IT governance and IT audit explained. Also, it is depicted how to model information systems and supporting IT procedures to meet ‘always-on’ requirements that comes from the business. In fact, a number of IT metrics proposed in the chapter support the alignment of IT Governance activities with business requirements towards IT.

Full text
Abstract:
The objective is to ensure that meetings are both efficient and effective. It is possible to be efficient without being effective and vice-versa. Most people acknowledge that meetings, especially formal, routine, scheduled meetings, waste more time than any other business activity. Time is wasted for two main reasons: redundancy and inefficiency. Often, meetings substitute random motion for useful activity, serving no more purpose than to mask indecision by deferring and diluting the decision-making process. Even when there is a genuine need for a meeting, time during the meeting is often wasted because of poor preparation, inappropriate attendance, unprofessional meeting behavior, and lack of follow-up. Pithy sayings, some centuries old, denigrating the value of committees and meetings, underline the ubiquity of the problem. And yet, meetings continue to be held and probably always will be, so it is as well to try and make them as efficient and effective as possible. The responsibility of every attendee for making a meeting as efficient and effective as possible is rarely considered or practiced. The way in which individuals behave in meetings is not only the major cause of time-wasting and inefficiency, but also provides unexpected insights into how apparently responsible people think. So what if I arrive late, I haven’t read the briefing material, I don’t listen attentively, I answer my phone, I read my e-mails, and send text messages? I may join in endless discussions on subjects about which I know nothing, chat with the person seated next to me, take too long to present my section, and leave early, but who cares? After all, isn’t the chairperson responsible for running the meeting? This section specifically addresses the typical, common, routine meetings related to drug development, at whatever the hierarchical level, in which data are presented and strategic and operational decisions are made. However, most of the principles described apply equally to most types of meetings. Good planning and preparation are the foundation for efficient meetings.

Abstract:
This paper presents a way to organize social innovation processes, since the identification of opportunities to the diffusion of solutions, that is based on the ecosystemic perspective and on the design method. The ecosystemic perspective is crux in order to generate the innovation necessary to reach systemic changes in today’s unsustainable ways of life. According to the systemic thinking, the understanding organization processes of complex physical, biological and social phenomena, implies focusing on the network that connects the parts of a system, rather than to the single parts.
