Abstract:
Throughout the course of this paper I will look at the various leadership methods described throughout the semester. I will evaluate my own leadership methods and compare methods I am using, compared with those discussed throughout the course. This paper will be broken into three main sections. First I will discuss my scores on various leadership tests, and see how they rated compared to an average. I will compare this to personal interviews with my McGuire Entrepreneurship group, and make high level comments on where I see the status of my leadership skills. I will then give a broad overview of the knowledge we have acquired through hearing 12 different speakers and compare that to my own skills. I will take the tips I found most constructive, and plan on utilizing while moving into my career. Lastly, I will develop a plan on how to connect the dots and set a plan for moving into the future as a leader.

Norint pasiekti gerą barjerinio bėgimo rezultatą, būtinas geras sprinterinis sportininkių pasirengimas ir puiki speciali greitumo ištvermė (Karoblis ir Ambrazienė, 1985). Šis darbas paaiškina kaip kintant sportiniam meistriškumui keičiasi bėgimo taktika, barjerų įveikimo technika ir fizinis parsirengimas sezono eigoje. Keliame hipotezę, kad gerėjant sportinei formai pagerės paskutinės 100 metrų atkarpos įveikimo greitis, o pasirinkta 400 m barjerinio bėgimo taktika Lietuvos ir pasaulio bėgikių nesiskirs. Tyrimo tikslas: Išanalizuoti 400 m barjerinio bėgimo taktiką. Uždaviniai: 1) Išanalizuoti K. J. 400 m b/b rezultatų ir barjerų tarpų įveikimo kaitą varžybiniame periode. 2) Nustatyti Lietuvos ir pasaulio 400 m b/b atstovių nuotolio įveikimo taktiką. Tyrimo metodika ir organizavimas. Goliath, David Quinton Daniel. "The marketing strategies and tactics of management consulting firms." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/51992.

Abstract:
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2000.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Management consulting refers to the area of intervention, which is assistance to entrepreneurs, managers and other decision-makers in business management and the public sector. The study will cover the area of management consulting and the primary focus of this study is companies presently doing business as Management Consulting firms with a global presence. The study excludes software vendors and management consulting firms that specialise only in implementing computer software systems like Oracle, SAP, etcetera. There are a great number of firms offering management consulting among other services like auditing for example. Prominent among these are the major accounting firms namely Ernst and Young, Deloitte Consulting, PriceWaterhouseCoopers, and Arthur Andersen. They form part of this study. Marketing has become a more critical need than ever and it has become an important and influential factor in building and maintaining a profitable enterprise. The marketing of a product and or service is very important and the question can be posed whether management consulting firms have clear marketing strategies and tactics, or whether they stumbled onto their success in attracting clients per chance. The purpose of this study is to identify existing marketing strategies and tactics being used by management consulting firms. The objective is to determine the nature of the compilation of a structured framework for an effective standardised marketing strategy plan. The problem statement is the following: "How can marketing strategies and tactics for management consulting firms be used as an effective marketing tool to attract business for the consulting firm?" The greatest problem concerning this study is the fact that minimal research and literature has been directly compiled on thé topic. It was therefore a study on opinions, viewpoints, books in general on the topic of marketing as well as the daily media was researched to determine and evaluate possible existing marketing strategies and tactics. Since the field of marketing strategies and tactics for management consulting services and firms is relatively new, the exploratory research approach was used. Chapter 1 deals with the purpose, objective, problem statement and research methodology. Chapter 2 involves a literature study to define the term and scope of management consulting, and an overview of the management consulting process is given. Chapters 3 identifies and evaluates the existing marketing strategies and tactics of management consulting firms. Chapter 4 explores differentiation based on service and skills as well as industry specialisation. The question that needs to be answered is whether management consulting firms should be specialists or generalists. Chapter 5 addresses pricing. The different approaches to costing and fee setting are discussed. The study is completed in chapter 6 with conclusions and recommendations.
Prominent onder hierdie groep is Ernst and Young, Deloitte Consulting, PriceWaterhouseCoopers, and Arthur Andersen.

Fuentes, Martinez Ana. "Teachers’ tactics when programming and mathematics converge."

Abstract:
Teachers’ everyday practices are embedded in school contexts in which their teaching autonomy is constrained by rules, moral obligations, physical settings, and official directives. When a curricular revision mandated that programming was to be a part of mathematics in upper secondary education, teachers’ conditions changed. How teachers adapted to the new curriculum and how they navigated the tensions and contradictions that they encountered is in this thesis analyzed in terms of teachers’ tactics and policy strategies. The overall goal of the investigation is to contribute to a critical understanding of how mathematics teachers integrate programming in their professional practice and how this integration aligns and diverges from the intentions behind the reform. The empirical material is drawn from nine individual interviews with mathematics teachers that were already proficient in programming. The teachers’ unit plans and other lesson materials featuring programming activities served as a trigger point to delve into further reflections upon their own professional practices. To complete the scene, the policy documents were also examined. These included the mathematics curriculum, as well as related official documents and a collection of institutionally sanctioned programming exercises and demonstrations. Two tactical approaches were made apparent when mathematics teachers began to integrate computer programming in their subject: Dual teaching and Interspersed programming. The teacher’s use of dual teaching practices or interspersed programming are tactics shaped by and in response to the conditions of the new curriculum and their own preferences and views on student learning. These two tactics disclose different ontological commitments in relation to the strategies dictated by the curriculum and reflect a cardinal distinction between planning mathematics activities with elements of programming and planning programming activities with elements of mathematics. Of relevance for teachers and curriculum designers is the understanding of (a) how the notion of programming and mathematics as separate subjects oversimplifies teachers’ actual integration practices, and (b) how the curricular choices made by policy can shape the teaching tactics adopted by educators.

Riordan, J. P. "Techniques, tactics and strategies for conceptual change in school science." Thesis, Canterbury Christ Church University, 2014. http://create.canterbury.ac.uk/13077/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study explores how experienced science teachers promote conceptual change. It examines how instructional strategies, learning methods (Darden, 1991) and conceptual change interrelate. Three research methods (expert micro-teaching, verbal protocols and retrospective debriefing) were used. Data were video-recorded and managed using NVivo. Six groups of 11 year-old pupils took part (three girls and three boys) in each expert micro-teaching interview, led by a science specialist (Advanced Skills Teacher). A ‘Concurrent Verbal Protocol and Retrospective Debriefing’ interview (Taylor and Dionne, 2000) happened with the teacher approximately one month later. Six teachers participated altogether. About fifteen hours of interview data were analysed using grounded theory methods. The interpretivist theoretical perspective (symbolic interactionism) was underpinned by a social constructionist epistemology. What can be considered evidence is inevitably affected by the researcher’s methodological position. So what constitutes reliable evidence can be contentious. Appropriate criteria for evaluating the grounded theory emerging from this study were used. Interpretivist approaches for investigating conceptual change in school science are necessary to avoid dominance by positivist literature. This approach, proved successful in other fields (Pressley, 2000), is new to this context. The assumption that instructional strategy is a plan does not adequately explain the data collected here. However, abandoning attempts to unpick complicated interactions between pupils and teacher whilst learning takes place, leaves practitioners without guidance. Consensus exists among most conceptual change researchers that instructional strategies, learning methods and conceptual change must be considered together where possible. This present study proposes a grounded theory for how experienced science teachers promote conceptual change and questions how instructional strategy is understood in the literature. Findings show that during and between sporadic periods of ‘conceptual conflict’ participants used eleven ‘teaching and learning techniques’. The relative weight given to each technique was termed the ‘strategic profile’ of the teacher. ‘Tactics’ is the theory of the use of teaching and learning techniques in conceptual combat. ‘Strategy’ is the theory of the use of such conceptual combats to try to achieve an aim (here to promote conceptual change). Teachers (and pupils) demonstrated and described tactical and strategic behaviour. Techniques, tactics and strategies frequently failed. How participants managed such ‘friction’ was described. Teachers and researchers view classroom dynamics from different perspectives. This study argues that an interpretivist approach, which moves back and forth between the particular and the general, can help bridge the “gap” between practice and theory in this field (Duit et al., 2008, p.629).

Abstract:
In order to survive and prosper in a very competitive market and in an environment characterized by changes and uncertainty like nowadays, the organizations need to be able change itself. The market and the environment are changing faster demanding the organizations to be more agile in their changes. In the process to implement the change there are a lot of negotiations that define the course of what had been planed before. So if the organization doesn t have employees with negotiation skills, the change might take longer to happen and it might not come as planed. This work s theme is about the way the professional are negotiating nowadays in their work and has the main goal of identifying negotiation strategies and tactics that the professionals use the most in the different contexts. Although the interest for this theme is very significant in the international management literature it have not been significantly broached in researches in Brazil. The research involved interviews with 13 professionals with different jobs and working in different markets. The results show that depending on the context there is a variety of strategies and tactics among the professionals investigated. It was possible to identify a group of aspects perceived by the individuals as important for the success of the negotiation, going through the preparation phase until situations when there is an impasse or when the person has to leave the process.

Abstract:
The area for this thesis was the application of Precision Teaching (PT) to the teaching of essential skills to various populations-university undergraduates, high school adolescents, and primary school children. Chapter 1 of this thesis begins with a brief overview describing problems that exist within the educational system, and how we might intervene to raise the performances ofallieamers by using PT's systems and strategies. Paper 1 was a small n study (conducted over 10 weeks) aimed at improving the rate of reading high frequency English words in a group (n = 5) of children struggling with reading. This was compared to a small comparison group thal underwent Treatment as Usual (TAU; n = 2). Although the engagement time of the PT group was brief (M = 12 minutes per week), all the children showed significant gains in their accurate reading fluency. In Paper 2 we applied these same principles to teach statistics to undergraduates (Intervention, n = 24; TAU, n = 3 1). Results showed that the PT group performed significan tly better at post-test in comparison to TAU. In addition the PT group perfonned better on their weekly module content tests. Paper 3 was conducted to increase maths performance, comparing the intervention group (n = 19) with a control group Cn = 10). All the PT ch ildren performed signi ficant ly better on three of the four outcome measures of essential sk ill maths fluency Cd = 1.25- 1.67)-one of which measures had not been practiced providing some init ial support for contingency adduction. In Paper 4 we used a simple flashcard intervention to increase recall of second-language vocabulary. The intervention spanned four weeks and took only 15 minutes per week for each chi ld, yet the intervention group (n = 79) performed s ignifi cantly better then the WLC group (n = 16) at post-test Cd= 1.54). Both Papers 3 & 4 report data showing significant increase in the ReI measures and a low NNT. In all four papers Standard Celeration Charts were used to monitor leamer's improvement.

Game balance can be considerd complex - there are many factors that play a role in the perception of balance. This thesis examines complexity, game theory and intution in an effort to disconver more about the perception of balance. The findings are that tactical and strategical choices that are presented for a player need to be interesting, not to complex and not to obvious. The importance lies in the estimation of the result that the player does when making a choice.

Duffy, Jenny. "Making theatre as an emerging company : exposing trends, tactics, strategies and constraints." Thesis, Northumbria University, 2017. http://nrl.northumbria.ac.uk/36215/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is based on a journey of practice undertaken by emerging theatre company, Massive Owl between 2012 and 2016. The thesis has been written by company member, Jenny Duffy but is reflective of the broader experience of the company as a whole. It exposes and discusses key trends, tactics, strategies and constraints of this journey, generating a unique contextual account of the experience and work of an emerging company working in the field of contemporary performance today. Through this the thesis responds to an identified gap in literature within the field of contemporary performance that examines the work of emerging artists. It analyses select frameworks currently available to and prolifically used by emerging artists including: Arts Council England’s funding programme, Grants for the Arts and ‘Scratch’ and Work-in-Progress events, from the perspective of an emerging company. Through examining the role of the arts within recent cultural policy and surrounding agendas of this policy, the thesis critiques the predominant instrumental and economic rationale for arts funding in relation to the neoliberal capitalist context and the impact this has on emerging artists’ development and their work. The thesis concludes with a call to arms from within the unstable and rapidly changing political climate of 2017, to value artists on their own merits and to not make claims for art within frameworks that place constraint on its wider role and value.

Abstract:
Deterrence has played a large role in Israel’s management of its conflict with Hamas throughout three distinct periods (1987-2000, 2000-2007, 2007-present). To accomplish deterrence against an actor that has varied in form across distinct periods with different political contexts, it has utilized myriad forms of deterrence, some of which are not part of the everyday deterrence vocabulary elsewhere. After initial instability, each of the three distinct periods has so far featured extended periods of calm following Israeli tactical shifts and the establishment of new deterrence relationships. The shifts between periods themselves, however, have led relatively stable deterrence relationships previously established to collapse or become irrelevant. Explaining these shifts and illuminating the operation of deterrence during each of these periods is an integral part of the first aim of this thesis and is a primary focus of its body chapters. Israel’s myriad tactical successes have not thus far provided a stable, enduring situation of calm. After each significant shift in the political context within which Israel and Hamas operate, both sides have had to ‘re-learn’ deterrence. This calls into question the long-term effectiveness and stability of deterrence as a means for managing the conflict. Nevertheless, there does not currently seem to be a vision for moving beyond deterrence in some way. The conclusion contains a discussion of this and of Israel’s options for bolstering deterrence in the short- to medium term and perhaps moving beyond it in the longer term.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the ways how behavioural examination strategies are used to enhance tactile perception during examination of soft viscoelastic environments. During the last few decades, Robot-assisted Minimally Invasive Surgery (RMIS) has become increasingly popular and has been employed in various medical procedures with proven benefits for the patient. However, direct tactile feedback which greatly improves surgical outcomes is not present in RMIS. Artificial probing performed on ex-vivo and phantom tissues shows high variability in the obtained data. Variability is caused by non-homogeneous tissue stiffness and the resulting nonlinear temporal dynamics of tool indentation. Performed numerical simulations indicate that probing speed for fixed indentation influences the variability of tissue viscoelastic parameter estimation. To reduce variability in artificial tactile examination, suitable probing behaviour should be implemented. Three techniques of manual palpation are studied to understand the behavioural patterns of soft tissue tactile examination, namely, modulation of the applied force, localised, and global examination. Humans use force modulation strategies to enhance their perception of harder areas in non-homogeneous environments. A second-order reactive autoregressive model has been found to describe this type of technique. Robotic palpation showed how this technique enhances the perceived inhomogeneous stiffness of the environment. The study of unidirectional localised manual palpation, has shown that combinations of force-velocity strategies can be used to enhance the perception of hard formations in viscoelastic environments. To validate the obtained probing strategies, finite element simulations and tele-manipulated palpation were used. It was found that kinaesthetic and/or force feedback are used by humans to detect hard formations. Finally, a remote palpation procedure on a silicone phantom utilizing a tele-manipulation setup was performed to study the behaviour of remote global palpation. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of global palpation pattern used during manual soft tissue examination as well as in tele-manipulated palpation.

Abstract:
In this thesis we extend the study of strategic voting to two frameworks that are novel to the literature. First, by analysing a four-party competition with purely instrumentally motivated voters (Part I); second, by focusing on a three-party competition where voters have instrumental and expressive motivations (Part II). We aim to explore an existing gap in the literature and, in particular, to investigate the possibility of a voting equilibrium with partial strategic voting and its stability. The three sub-models studied in Part I (including essay 1) and the model in Part II (including essays 2, 3 and 4) focus on the case of large electorates and include public uncertainty. This distinguishes them from Cox (1997), where no real uncertainty exists as the electorate gets large, and Myatt (2006), which includes both public and private information. Essays 2 and 3 present and explore the theoretical framework and implications for the model chosen for Part II and essay 4 applies it to the 1997 UK General Election. From essay 1 we obtain the result that in a single-ballot simple-plurality election there is a tendency towards the Duvergerian equilibrium in a four-party model. Also, an equilibrium with partial strategic voting is never stable. From essays 2 and 3 three main results arise: a Duvergerian equilibrium is never possible; a stable equilibrium always exists; and more information leads to less strategic voting – contrary to Myatt (2006). Both the impossibility of any Duvergerian equilibrium and the possibility of a stable interior equilibrium in multiple cases are central to our theory of voting that includes an expressiveness component. The simulations in essay 4 suggest that a very low level of expressiveness is needed to obtain a level of strategic voting compatible with the findings in Fisher (2004). The theory predicts the impossibility of some constituency results that are in fact frequently observed in British elections. Cox (1997), Making Votes Count. Cambridge, Cambridge University Press. Abstract:
This doctoral thesis proposes to widen the question of urban practices and urban representations of security on the basis of the study of three different zones of Bogotá (Colombia): la Candelaria, La Macarena and Usaquén, between 2000 and 2018. The effects of insecurity and violence have been analysed in relation to the social use of public spaces and the town's politics related to these issues. This study is based on the urban experiences of citizens, their living spaces and the ways in which their every-day mobility has been shaped in these central zones of the Colombian capital city. This ethnographic study is also based on the choice of a dialogue between different methods and diverse sources, from semi-directed interviews, to mind maps and institutional documents, but also of representations that are implicit in certain literary works. This approach brings to light the existence of citizens’ skills specific to the Colombian metropolis: a "singular behaviour” in Bogotá that is conveyed through strategies and manoeuvres developed by citizens in order to face tense situations and different types of constraints. The practices and representations of the city are shaped into navigation charts and maps, created by the inhabitants of the studied zones, that condense the deep knowledge of the rhythms, the dynamics and the frontiers of the Bogotano territories. These practices reveal a set of shared codes, recognized and rooted in the urban society, that allow the solving of every-day problems linked to security. This citizen behaviour entails basic skills that have become, over time, a “shared common sense” that an inhabitant of Bogotá must possess in order to master the city in its material dimensions, especially in the territorial ones, but also in the symbolic or immaterial dimensions. This knowledge reveals a distinctive wisdom of the capital-city territory

Abstract:
Within new configurations of the ‘Great Australian Dream’, high-rise living in Australian cities has become not only an acceptable housing configuration for the middle classes but also a desirable one. Enquiring deeply into the tactics and strategies that building inhabitants use to live vertically in the city, this thesis explores the ways in which the design, inhabitation, and maintenance of middle-class high-rise developments are negotiated in Melbourne inner-suburbs. It explores dwellers’ agency in the negotiation of design choices and co-production of high-rise spaces, using mixed qualitative methods combining walking tours and semi-directed interviews. Drawing on the new geography of architecture and on a relational approach to housing and home, the research engages with a theory of practice acknowledging tactical and strategic actions in the city. It argues that dwellers reshape the socio-material configurations and spatial relations of apartment living set by designers, developers and housing technologists. Explicitly recognising of the role of social class in high-rise living, the research suggests that apartment developments are highly contested sites where intended lifestyles and aspirations are negotiated by varied institutions and actors, through a distinctive set of temporal and spatial actions. It finds that competing actors all work towards the co-production of high-rise living spaces and cultures. However, the thesis also shows that housing relations in the practice of middle-class apartment living outline an uneven and changing distribution of power between those who develop strategies and those who craft tactics. More broadly, this research opens up a deeper understanding of how this new kind of vertical city reflects and transforms configurations of status, power and identity in the Australian suburb

Abstract:
Payan and McFarland (2005) argue that sales influence tactics (SITs) with more complete argument structure are more effective in gaining influence with customers (e.g., providing information on product features and discussing why these are beneficial is a more complete argument vs. solely providing information on product features). The authors extend this work by integrating argument structure theory with information processing theory and argue that while this is true for customers who are lower on product expertise (i.e., SITs with more complete argument structure are more effective with novices), contrary to existing theory, they argue that the opposite is true for customers with higher levels of product expertise (i.e., SITs with less complete argument structure are more effective with experts). The authors further contend that information diagnosticity mediates the relationship between these interactions and the effectiveness of influence tactics (what is termed manifest influence). Results from five experiments, including one field study, conducted in the context of interactions between customers and salespeople in retail stores provide strong support for the hypotheses. Theoretical implications and managerial guidelines for matching influence tactics to customer expertise are discussed. Building on prior research on the use of influence tactics by frontline salespeople, this research develops theory regarding the interaction between sales influence tactic types (emotional vs. informational tactics) and customer shopping goal specificity levels (a nonspecific goal—just shopping around vs. a specific goal—having a specific product in mind) on purchase intention within a brick-and-mortar retail shopping context. This research contributes to the sales influence tactics literature and information processing literature and specifies strategic recommendations for frontline salespeople and sales managers

The focus of my internship was the development of a predictive capacity planning model to characterize the storage requirements and space utilization for Amazon's Campbellsville (SDF) Fulfillment Center (FC). Amazon currently has a functional model that serves the purpose of capacity planning, but they were looking for something that would provide more insight into their storage requirements against various demand forecasts and time horizons. With a more comprehensive model in place, Amazon would then have the ability to initiate studies, with the intent of optimizing the key parameters of their capacity flow Amazon utilizes a fairly robust and complex software solution for allocating items to storage locations as it receives shipments from its network of manufacturers and distributors. Amazon designates its capacity storage areas as being Prime, Reserve or Random Stow. Prime storage locations are bins from which workers pick items to fulfill orders. Reserve storage consists of pallet locations from which workers replenish Prime bins. Random Stow is a special case form of storage not taken into consideration for the purposes of my internship. The algorithm that determines the capacity allocation for a particular item is driven by two key parameters. The first parameter Amazon refers to as Days of Cover, which serves as a cycle and safety stock control variable. The maximum Days of Cover setting dictates the quantity of a particular item allocated to Prime locations, with any remaining items in the shipment being sent to Reserve. The minimum Days of Cover serves as the trigger resulting in a replenishment move from Reserve to Prime.
(cont.) The second parameter, designated as Velocity to Bin Type Mapping, associates Prime bin locations to item demand in terms of outbound cubic volume per week. Amazon's Campbellsville facility has three tiers of Prime storage: Library Deep. Case Flow and Pallet Prime, with each tier representing a larger physical bin size in terms of capacity. The Velocity to Bin Type mapping parameter essentially sets ranges of demand to each of the bin types, such that items are sent to the bin type matching their demand. Amazon's capacity constraints are seasonal, with the holiday season posing the greatest challenge in terms of having enough Prime locations to fulfill demand. Amazon currently has no means of predicting the effects on their capacity allocation when operators make adjustments to either Days of Cover or Velocity to Bin Type Mapping. While operators do have some degree of insight into the dynamics these parameters have on capacity allocation, they are unable to optimize capacity utilization. The challenge for my internship was to develop a model that would provide insight into the dynamics driving these system parameters. The scope of the internship was to convert a demand prediction based on Sales figures into a forecast on capacity storage requirements. The focus of my work centered on providing the logic flow to perform this conversion, driven by a model built using Microsoft Excel and driven by a series of Visual Basic macros ...

Abstract:
This research focuses on assessing the effects of policing operations on tactical deployment operated by non-state actors. The theory advanced by this work, labelled SMORG theory, is first and foremost an attempt to move from fragmented to comprehensive knowledge. At the theoretical level, it provides policy makers and practitioners with a better understanding of policing instruments, and especially highlights the limits of coercion and deterrence when dealing with non-state actors. At the methodological level, it demonstrates how to scrutinise the protest space in its entirety, by providing an innovative set of tools to analyse the temporal and spatial distribution of forms of protests on diverse theaters. At the empirical level, it reveals the evolution of conventional, confrontational and violent forms protest in South Lebanon, Gaza Strip, West Bank, and Israel, during the period 1982 to 2011; it further precisely assesses the effects of policing operations on tactical deployment operated by non-state actors on the same theaters.

Abstract:
The optimal asset allocation is an ever current matter for investment managers. This thesis aims to investigate the impact of risk parity and target volatility on the Sharpe ratio of a portfolio consisting of futures contracts on equity indices and bonds during the period 2000-2018. In addition, this thesis examines on which level - instrument, asset class or total portfolio level - a momentum strategy has the largest effect. This is done by applying design of experiments. The final result in this thesis finds that risk parity and target volatility improve the Sharpe ratio compared to a classic 60/40 capital allocation. Furthermore, utilising momentum strategies is the most beneficial on the asset class level, i.e. to allocate between equitiy indices and bond futures.

This thesis investigates search scenarios in which multiple mobile, self-interested agents, cows in our case, compete to capture targets. The problems considered in this thesis address search strategies that reflect (i) the need to efficiently search for targets given a prior on their location, and (ii) an awareness that the environment in which searching takes place contains other self-interested agents. Surprisingly, problems that feature these elements are largely under-represented in the literature. Granted, the scenarios of interest inherit the challenges and complexities of search theory and game theory alike. Undeterred, this thesis makes a contribution by considering competitive search problems that feature a modest number of agents and take place in simple environments. These restrictions permit an in-depth analysis of the decision-making involved, while preserving interesting options for strategic play. In studying these problems, we report a number of fundamental competitive search game results and, in so doing, begin to populate a toolbox of techniques and results useful for tackling more scenarios. The thesis begins by introducing a collection of problems that fit within the competitive search game framework. We use the example of taxi systems, in which drivers compete to find passengers and garner fares, as a motivational example throughout. Owing to connections with a well-known problem, called the Cow-Path Problem, the agents of interest, which could represent taxis or robots depending on the scenario, will be referred to as cows. To begin, we first consider a one-sided search problem in which a hungry cow, left to her own devices, tries to efficiently find a patch of clover located on a ring. Subsequently, we consider a game in which two cows, guided only by limited prior information, compete to capture a target. We begin by considering a version in which each cow can turn at most once and show this game admits an equilibrium. A dynamic-programming-based approach is then used to extend the result to games featuring at most a finite number of turns. Subsequent chapters consider games that add one or more elements to this basic construct. We consider games where one cow has additional information on the target's location, and games where targets arrive dynamically. For a number of these variants, we characterize equilibrium search strategies. In settings where this proves overly difficult, we characterize search strategies that provide performance within a known factor of the utility that would be achieved in an equilibrium. The thesis closes by highlighting the key ideas discussed and outlining directions of future research.

Abstract:
Interorganizational arrangements, such as partnerships between non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and governmental organizations (GOs), are increasingly regarded by policymakers as critical to effective social sector development. This is particularly true in the arena of housing provision for residents of slums and squatter settlements. The recent pursuit of collaboration between NGOs and government housing agencies in large urban agglomerations such as Mumbai, India marks a significant shift from the adversarial climate that previously characterized NGO-GO interactions. In other words, NGOs engaged in housing issues appear to be evolving from ''housing rights advocates'' to ''housing developers''. However, very little research has examined the struggles and pressures facing organizations as they travel from confrontational to collaborative relationships. This dissertation provides an empirical and theoretical basis for examining the evolution of NGO-GO relationships over time and, in doing so, links research on urban political economy of housing to research on organizational life cycles and strategic institutional change. Two questions are central to the dissertation: 1) How do shifts in state housing policies influence the strategies pursued by advocacy NGOs in housing the poor? 2) What are the factors that influence the emergence and sustenance of NGO-government housing partnerships? To address these, I use a multiple-case study analysis of critical incidents in the history (from 1981 to 2003) of three NGOs in Mumbai: Nivara Hakk Suraksha Samiti, Youth for Unity and Voluntary Action, and Society for the Promotion of Area Resource Centres. In addition, I examine five state and city level housing authorities. The dissertation's findings address three broad themes of literature: i) NGO-GO Interaction Styles; ii) Institutional Isomorphism; and, iii) NGO Development Continuum. Findings related to these broad streams of literature suggest that NGO behavior is shaped both by public policy orientation and by internal strategies and decisions. In efforts to gain and retain legitimacy, NGOs will likely use multiple interaction styles both simultaneously and sequentially. Analysis of internal institutional processes in NGOs suggests that organizational responses to isomorphic demands are circumscribed by path-dependent factors and the variability in NGO resource environments. NGO development strategies have evolved towards greater complexity and sophistication.

Gauci, Jason. "Learning from geometry in learning for tactical and strategic decision domains." Doctoral diss., University of Central Florida, 2010. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETD/id/4607.

Abstract:
Artificial neural networks (ANNs) are an abstraction of the low-level architecture of biological brains that are often applied in general problem solving and function approximation. Neuroevolution (NE), i.e. the evolution of ANNs, has proven effective at solving problems in a variety of domains. Information from the domain is input to the ANN, which outputs its desired actions. This dissertation presents a new NE algorithm called Hypercube-based NeuroEvolution of Augmenting Topologies (HyperNEAT), based on a novel indirect encoding of ANNs. The key insight in HyperNEAT is to make the algorithm aware of the geometry in which the ANNs are embedded and thereby exploit such domain geometry to evolve ANNs more effectively. The dissertation focuses on applying HyperNEAT to tactical and strategic decision domains. These domains involve simultaneously considering short-term tactics while also balancing long-term strategies. Board games such as checkers and Go are canonical examples of such domains; however, they also include real-time strategy games and military scenarios. The dissertation details three proposed extensions to HyperNEAT designed to work in tactical and strategic decision domains. The first is an action selector ANN architecture that allows the ANN to indicate its judgements on every possible action all at once. The second technique is called substrate extrapolation. It allows learning basic concepts at a low resolution, and then increasing the resolution to learn more advanced concepts. The final extension is geometric game-tree pruning, whereby HyperNEAT can endow the ANN the ability to focus on specific areas of a domain (such as a checkers board) that deserve more inspection. The culminating contribution is to demonstrate the ability of HyperNEAT with these extensions to play Go, a most challenging game for artificial intelligence, by combining HyperNEAT with UCT.

Kelly, Amanda. "Resistance to School Consolidation in a Rural Appalachian Community." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/35391.

Full text
Abstract:

School consolidation, which involves closing one or more schools and combining them into a single school, is a common phenomenon in rural Appalachian communities due to out-migration and lack of funding for public schools. When school consolidation occurs, the local school may be closed, or students from other communities may be bused to the school. Community residents, however, do not always agree with the decision to consolidate their local schools. When this disagreement occurs, residents may choose to participate in organized resistance activities to show their opposition, make their voices heard to local politicians and the media, and seek an alternative to the proposed consolidation.

This case study of school consolidation in one rural Appalachian county seeks to document and analyze the struggle in which community residents engaged in an effort to prevent local schools from being consolidated. Data was collected in the form of semi-structured interviews conducted with members and sympathizers of a resistance organization called TOPS. TOPS was formed in 2001 to oppose school consolidation, but its members were not successful in keeping their local schools open. Many schools in McDowell County have been consolidated or are scheduled to be consolidated in the near future. For example, Big Creek High School, which was at the center of many consolidation debates, will be closed in 2010. Its students will be bused to a new, consolidated high school.

I conducted interviews during fall 2006 and spring 2007 to determine community membersâ grievances concerning consolidation, to establish a narrative of their struggle against state government officials, and to provide a basis for analyzing the movementâ s failure to achieve its goals. I used these interviews, along with TOPSâ documents, local newspaper articles, and literature from other anti-consolidation efforts, to examine possible reasons why TOPS was not successful. Social movements literature, particularly the concepts of framing and repertoires of contention, formed the theoretical basis of this analysis.

Abstract:
The COVID-19 pandemic shook the entire world at the start of 2020, causing aglobal social and economic disruption. This was especially true for those workingwith large groups of people in places like movie theaters, airplanes and live musicvenues. This qualitative study seeks to explain what kind of professional livesmusicians have had to develop during the coronavirus pandemic through emailinterviews. The research relates to the theory of habitus and field. It also relates totheory of strategies and tactics. The focus will be on how musicians from Sweden,Finland and the United States have adjusted to work. The musicians were devastatedand shocked but quick in using tactics to adapt to the situation. There were bigtransformations in plans already made. Some musicians returned to former jobs.Part-time teachers started teaching more through Zoom. A few held live-streamedconcerts. Some musicians had time for side projects while others sought completelynew jobs, which in one case, turned out in his favor. The musicians were almostuniversally hopeful for a brighter future.
