Abstract:
This study seeks to understand the competitive pattern and strategy of the firms in the Brazilian automobile financing market. First, we analyzed the strong segmentation observed in this market, determining market niches. We then estimated reaction functions to price changes. The results indicated that the three largest companies in the sector have a strong influence on interest rate setting within the entire segment. This phenomenon characterizes the competition of this sector as the leader-follower type, rather than Bertrand competition, the latter of which is often expected in the banking s

With virtual teams, companies can expand their talent pool beyond geographical barriers. Furthermore, they can incorporate a follow-the-sun process in their business strategy. Combined, this leveraged approach can better position companies to meet market demands in a more timely and cost-effective manner. To achieve this competitive advantage, business leaders must thoroughly understand the challenges associated with developing and managing virtual teams. Abstract:
This chapter leads a complex research study on the determinants of bank cost efficiency in transitional economies based on empirical evidence for Latin America, Central, and Eastern Europe, and South-East Asia. The empirical results suggested that banks, which follow a more cautious strategy, characterized by lower risk appetite and average expectations on profitability, have higher cost efficiency. Moreover, the empirical evidence highlighted the fact that a higher gross domestic product growth rate implies an increase in the inefficiency level, indicating an unsustainable bank management behavior, which in periods of economic growth adopts policies that can generate inefficiency in order to gain market share and to obtain higher bonuses. The global financial crisis has had a high negative impact on the banking system in transition economies.

Good leaders need followers. Without great followers, leaders would become schizophrenics sitting in their offices talking to themselves. Can a person be defined as good leader if he does not have any people to believe in him, to follow his example, to trust him? Followership is a process when the person has the capacity and willingness to follow the leader when having some target. In other words, being a good follower means having the skills, the abilities, and the desire to follow the leader in achieving the goals. The chapter aims to define what is followership, how it is related to leadership, especially in business organizations such as medium-sized enterprises. Thus, followership can be perceived as a mutual process in which the leaders and followers interact, help each other to reach the aims on individual and organizational level. The importance of followership to the leader will be analyzed followed by author's recommendations for the future and a conclusion.

The power mismatch between the generated and consumed power is one of the major issues faced in the electricity industry. This can be addressed by analysing user behaviour and manipulating it. This paper attempts to put forth a demand response (DR) technique using the concept of Time-of-Use (ToU) electricity pricing. This paper presents an effective autonomous follow-the-leader strategy for Azimuthal Stern Drive vessels. The control logic has been investigated from a theoretical point of view. A line-of-sight algorithm is exploited to ensure yaw-check ability, while a speed-check feature is implemented to track the velocity of the target along the path. For this purpose, a linearised manoeuvrability model for azimuthal drive surface vessels is presented. A model-based control synthesis is proposed to ensure the stability of the closed-loop system and robust PID controllers are designed by using Linear Matr

The Digital Single Market Directive 2019/790 constitutes a significant milestone in the field of copyright, especially its provisions aimed to ensure the fair remuneration for authors and performers. This publication focuses on Art. 18 of the Directive, which establishes the principle of appropriate and proportionate remuneration. This principle follows from the general understanding of authors and performers as a weaker bargaining party. Being formulated abstractly, the principle of appropriate and proportionate remuneration leaves broad discretion for its implementation. Therefore, the artic

Multi-functional design problems are characterized by strong coupling between design variables that are controlled by stakeholders from different disciplines. This coupling necessitates efficient modeling of interactions between multiple designers who want to achieve conflicting objectives but share control over design variables. Various game-theoretic protocols such as cooperative, non-cooperative, and leader/follower have been used to model interactions between designers. Non-cooperative game theory protocols are of particular interest for modeling cooperation in multi-functional design prob

Abstract Shortline industry plays a prominent role in the North American Freight Rail System (mainly United States and Canada), providing a customized freight rail service to the shippers, i.e. the first/last mile rail access for those low dense/light demand markets, outside the Class I’s business model (highly loaded corridors), as well as competition enhancers, through the connection of shippers facilities with more than one Class I railroad. The Short Line’s Rail industry role and its inherent freight rail business model have been strengthened in the years that followed the so called Stagge

The survey is based on a questionnaire addressed to 637 firms with turnover greater than £ 30 million ($ 45 million), operating in the UK across key industrial sectors and engaged in New Product Development (NPD). Response rate was of 8%. Global NPD practices include product standardization, the strategy used to allocate NPD centers (related to business units and geographically), the level of centralization of tasks, the

Abstract The new economic conditions characterised by the instability in the global oil and gas industry push market players to search for profitable and efficient ways of developing oil and gas deposits. One of the key opportunities is Enhanced Oil Recovery projects in hard-to-recover reservoirs and formations. When planning the entire scope of development operations, well interventions and surveys, it is important to follow a strategy that would help successfully overcome the geological and engineering challenges facing the operators. Engineering optimization methods for new product development model consumer demand as a function of product attributes and price in order to identify designs that maximize expected profit. However, prior approaches have ignored the ability of competitors to react to a new product entrant; thus these methods can overestimate expected profit and select suboptimal designs that perform poorly in a competitive market. We propose an efficient approach to new product design accounting for competitor pricing reactions by imposing Nash and Stackelberg conditions as constraints, and we test the method o

In today’s volatile market, it is crucial for companies to fine-tune their organizations and processes toward increased profitability and productivity, to have a strategy for continuous improvement, and to institute a means for graduated measurement. In putting together a continuous improvement strategy, a roadmap is essential. The roadmap must be clear and easy to follow. The roadmap that is most easily understood and accepted by an organization is one that is started from a base case, or simplified visualization of the current environment, that is called the ‘As-Is’ case, to the target envir
