Stratford-upon-Avon, July: I sat through a Julius Caesar which played to a full house. At the end I was surrounded by cheering Japanese tourists; it looked like a success. The experience was distinctly unreal, for the production (by Terry Hands) was terminally undercast and contemptuously underdirected. Two weeks later I attended a preview of Othello in Stratford, Ontario. Again to a full house, the Festival Stage offered a hollow and mechanical formula for a great play. I did not then know that the lead, Howard Rollins, was suffering from viral pneumonia, and that there was some doubt as to w

The representational power that the Stratford Festival holds in the history of contemporary Canadian theatre cannot be overestimated. Stratford has long been a monument of (and to) theatre in Canada, partly because of the distinctive architectural design of the Festival Theatre, and partly – perhaps more likely – because of its manufactured story of origin.1 In Performing Canada: The Nation Enacted in the Imagined Theatre, Alan Filewod explains how Stratford came to be “the template which ... governed the dominant model of professional theatre structures in Canada” (56) and Canadian theatre it

This essay overviews key aspects of Stratford Caldecott’s idea of liberal arts education, within the Roman Catholic tradition and especially focuses on the centrality of the Eucharist in his thought. It also considers how, according to Caldecott, liberal arts education contains a kind of liturgical affordance or sympathy with the form and nature of worship (within Roman Catholicism). In so doing, this paper offers, to date, the most substantive scholarly introduction to key aspects of Caldecott’s Eucharistic idea of education, within the context of the liberal arts tradition (broadly conceived

Abstract:
The authorized history of the Stratford Shakespearean Festival was originally intended to commemorate its 25th anniversary in 1978, when the festival was enjoying critical and fiscal success under Robin Phillips. When the history finally appeared in 1985 it covered thirty seasons. The five-year expansion changed the nature of the Stratford story because those extra five years included the crisis of 1980 and John Hirsch’s initial seasons with their ballooning deficits and declining attendance. Providing sufficient coverage of these recent events necessitated publishing Stratford in two volumes.

Easily the most interesting, inventive and challenging production at the Stratford Festival in 1999 was Richard Rose’s revival of David Young’s Glenn. Rose’s carefully orchestrated and choreographed staging of Young’s sophisticated script about the modernist wish to do away with, transcend or control material mediations between conception and expression might have served as a commentary on the gap between the Festival’s professed and publicized ideals and their playing out on the Festival’s three stages. In 1959, the year the Stratford Globe and Mail playwriting competition started receiving submissions from across the country, the Stratford Festival was already being labelled a disaster area by Antony Ferry of the Toronto Star. Arguing that all hopes for a true Canadian theatre had been buried there, he predicted that the theatre would die when It had done Shakespeare’s major works. While this may have enlivened some cocktail conversations, it was fundamentally incorrect for two important reasons: the first being the newly formed Canada Council, which pulled Stratford out of a deficit season
