The goal of this study was to assess mineralogy and pedogenic features of sand dunes in a stratigraphic sequence. The purpose was to determine whether these features significantly differ to reflect age differences with depth within the sequence. Samples were collected from the vertical exposure of one dune face by stratified random sampling at 1.0-m vertical intervals. Particle size distribution was determined through partic

Abstract:
The northern Los Angeles basin is influenced by two structural styles: the west-trending compressional Transverse Ranges to the north, and the strike-slip Peninsular Ranges to the south. The interaction of these two structural styles has resulted in a complex fold/fault belt at the northern margin of the Los Angeles basin, which deforms a variable sequence of late Miocene through Quaternary marine strata. Subsurface mapping of Quaternary marine gravels by electric-log correlation documents the latest phase of deformation in the northern Los Angeles basin. The Quaternary marine gravels are fold

Eight structural zones from 250km to 800km long, traverse the granite-greenstone terrane of the Eastern Goldfields and Murchison districts of the Yilgam Craton. The structural zones, herein called LSZ, (long structural zones) have been traced using 1 :500,000 geological compilations and AGSO (Australian Geological Survey Organisation) aeromagnetic and gravity data. LSZ are complex linear deformation zones, resulting in the reactivation of structures formed prior to a craton wide shortening episode. Some of the pre-existing structures are interpreted as low angle extensional features, po

Abstract:
In 2007, the Barnett Shale in the Fort Worth basin of Texas produced 1.1 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) gas and ranked second in U.S gas production. Despite its importance, controls on Barnett Shale gas well performance are poorly understood. Regional and vertical variations of reservoir properties and their effects on well performances have not been assessed. Therefore, we conducted a study of Barnett Shale stratigraphy, petrophysics, and production, and we integrated these results to clarify the controls on well performance. Barnett Shale ranges from 50 to 1,100 ft thick; we divided the forma

The Whittier fault forms the central part of a fault system extending from the East Montebello fault at Whittier Narrows to the Elsinore fault, which is traced as far as the Mexican border. The Whittier fault forms a restraining bend in this fault system, resulting in uplift of the Puente Hills. The northwestern part of the Whittier fault in the Whittier oil field in the eastern Los Angeles basin strikes approximately N65W and dips 70-75 northeast. The fault is near the range front of the Puente Hills northwest of Turnbull Canyon, and within the Puente Hills to the southeast. The central r

The SACROC unit is an isolated carbonate platform style of reservoir that typifies a peak icehouse system. Icehouse carbonate platforms are one of the least well understood and documented carbonate reservoir styles due to the reservoir heterogeneities they embody. The current study is an attempt to recognize carbonate rock types defined based on rock fabrics by integrating log and core based petrophysical analysis in high-frequency cycle (HFC) scale sequence stratigraphic framework and to improve our ability to understand static and dynamic petrophysical properties of these reservoir rock type

In South Central Cut Bank Sand Unit (SCCBSU) of Cut Bank field, primary production and waterflood projects have resulted in recovery of only 29 % of the original oil in place from heterogeneous, fluvial sandstone deposits. Using highresolution sequence stratigraphy and geostatistical analysis, I developed a geologic model that may improve the ultimate recovery of oil from this field. In this study, I assessed sequence stratigraphic concepts for continental settings and extended the techniques to analyze low-accommodation alluvial systems of the Cut Bank and Sunburst members of the lower Kooten

The Campanian Iles Formation of the Mesaverde Group in northwestern Colorado contains a stacked series of some 11 shoreline sequences that form clastic wedges extending east and southeastwards from the Sevier orogenic belt to the Western Interior Seaway. Iles Formation shorelines and their alluvial and coastal plain equivalents (Neslen Formation, Trail and Rusty members of the Ericson Formation) are well exposed from Utah and from southern Wyoming into northwestern Colorado. The Iles Clastic Wedge was examined in the subsurface Piceance Basin and at outcrops in Meeker and south of Rangely, NW
