Abstract:
Archean tectonics are irreconcilable with modern plate tectonics without clearly understanding Proterozoic tectonic accretionary prosesses. Arizona best displays a convergent margin where Proterozoic accretion to an Archean craton generated a new Proterozoic crust from 1800 to 160 Ma. This 12 year study independently formulated a definitive understanding of Arizona's Proterozoic tectonic evolution with new lithologic, petrologic, geochemical, structural and relative age data, and extensive new mapping. The Northwest Gneiss Belt contains an early Proterozoic arkosic clastic wedge at the Wyoming Archean edge, but only intraoceanic elements--Antler-Valentine and Bagdad volcanic belts--on Proterozoic oceanic crust south of the wedge. The Central Volcanic Belt evolved diachronously on oceanic crust: 1800-1750 Ma formative volcanism (Bradshaw Mountain, Mayer, Ash Creek and Black Canyon Creek Groups) stepped SE to form the Prescott-Jerome island arc above a SE-dipping subduction zone; a 1740 Ma NW subduction flip accreted the arc to the Archean craton, evolved I-type plutons of NW alkali-enrichment opposit to arc tholeiites, and formed calc-alkaline Union Hills Group volcanics at the southeast arc front. Except for hiatal Alder Group deposition in structural troughs, the central magmatic arc emerged as the trench stepped southeastward across SE Arizona with flattening of subduction, growth of the Pinal Schist fore-arc basin, 1700 Ma accretion of the Dos Cabenzas arc to the margin, eruption of felsic ignimbrite fans across the central arc front, and Mazatzal Group shallow marine sedimentation across the emergent arc. Proterozoic plate tectonics were subtly different from modern plate tectonics, producing oceanic crust, island arcs and other features very different in detail from modern and Archean analogs. The Proterozoic Plate Tectonic Style warrants clear distinction from those of other eras. This study establishes for Arizona an extensive, accurate and new Proterozoic data base, for central Arizona a detailed relative chronology surpassing isotopic resolution, and a new formal stratigraphic framework to be the foundation for future studies. This dissertation is superceded by a new book on Arizona's Proterozoic Tectonic Evolution, published by the Precambrian Research Institute, 810 Owens Lane, Payson, Arizona, 85541.

Abstract:
This study describes the tectono-stratigraphic and climatic record of the NE Arabian Sea during the Cenozoic.  Compilation of regional knowledge and subsurface observations has in this thesis provided new interpretations and insights into the records present along this passive margin.  The first is the rifting period (80-65 Ma) and the identification of a syn-rift volcanic sequence, comparable to other volcanic rifted margins.  This is followed by the record of a drift sequence (~65 Ma to present day), composed of extensive carbonate platforms and an infill sequence of siliciclastic deposits.  The analysed drift sequence (sink) is partly the result of the erosion of the hinterland (source) characterised by the India-Eurasia continent-continent collision.  Influence of regional climate and/or tectonic forces on the accumulation rate in the sink was tested, but not conclusive as the study area (Upper Indus Fan) covers only a limited part of the sedimentary record of the Indus Fan.  The thermal regime of the western margin of India is sparsely sampled, but once analysed, allows the definition of first order constraints on multiple rifting events.  The post-rift subsidence of the margin is slow and anomalous for &gt;28 m.y. after break-up, potentially in relation with vigorous asthenospheric convection and a sharp ocean-continent boundary.  Past and present fluid flow is recorded in the sedimentary sequence of the Upper Indus Fan.  The first is related to gas hydrate occurrence and is the result of the migration of fluids by a plumbing system to the shallow subsurface, expressed by bottom-simulating reflections crosscutting stratal reflections.  A longer term fluid migration is recorded in this basin by the longest lived (~22 m.y.) mud volcano field recorded to date.

Abstract:
Most passive margins display a prominent breakup unconformity coinciding with the rift to drift transition. The unconformity, as defined by Falvey, (1974) is of broad regional extent affecting both basins and highs and is easily recognised on seismic sections. Criteria for the recognition of the breakup unconformity include an inflection in the subsidence curve, fault terminations and volcanic strata (and/or evaporites) at the level of the unconformity. Falvey considered that it was caused by "erosion during the final uplift pulse associated with pre-breakup upwelling in the mantle". It is more likely that the uplift is caused by magmatic underplating in response to the passive upwelling of the mantle and the flexural isostatic effects of erosion throughout the syn-rift phase. The primary objective has been to quantify the amount of uplift and erosion associated with the breakup unconformity / breakup megasequence boundary. This is of particular importance in hydrocarbon exploration as it quantifies the potential loss of old reservoirs and predicts the provenance of new reservoir clastics. Two data sets, from the Grand Banks and the Northwest Shelf of Australia, have been studied. In both cases there are multiple breakup events and breakup megasequence boundaries form part of a complex tectono-stratigraphy. Regional seismic lines have been interpreted, depth converted and modelled using a new technique of combined reverse post-rift and forward syn-rift modelling. The results of this process, together with seismic megasequence analysis, show that the morphology of the breakup megasequence boundary varies systematically across a passive margin. It is strongly erosional at about 70 km landward of the continentocean boundary, where regional "breakup" uplift outweighs extensionally controlled subsidence, but may be depositional on either side of this zone. A coupled, quantitative magmatic-tectonic model has been constructed by combining the Bickle-McKenzie melt generation model with the flexural cantilever model for continental extension. The magnitude of underplating can be estimated using the Bickle-McKenzie model, in which the amount of melt produced is controlled by the extension factor, ß, and the proximity of a mantle plume convection cell.

<p> Three studies on Cordilleran foreland basin deposits in the western U.S.A. constitute this dissertation. These studies differ in scale, time and discipline. The first two studies include basin analysis, flexural modeling and detailed stratigraphic analysis of Upper Cretaceous depocenters and strata in the western U.S.A. The third study consists of detrital zircon U-Pb analysis (DZ U-Pb) and thermochronology, both zircon (U-Th)/He and apatite fission track (AFT), of Upper Jurassic to Upper Cretaceous foreland-basin conglomerates and sandstones. Five electronic supplementary files are a part of this dissertation and are available online; these include 3 raw data files (Appendix_A_raw_isopach_data.txt, Appendix_C_DZ_Data.xls, Appendix_C_U-Pb_apatite.xls), 1 oversized stratigraphic cross section (Appendix_B_figure_5.pdf), and 1 figure containing apatite U-Pb concordia plots (Appendix_C_Concordia.pdf).</p><p> <b>Appendix A</b> is a combination of detailed isopach maps of the Upper Cretaceous Western Interior, flexural modeling and a comparison to dynamic subsidence models as applied to the region. Using these new isopach maps and modeling, I place the previously recognized but poorly constrained shift from flexural to non-flexural subsidence at 81 Ma.</p><p> <b>Appendix B</b> is a detailed stratigraphic study of the Upper Cretaceous, (Campanian, ~76 Ma) Sego Sandstone Member of the Mesaverde Group in northwestern Colorado, an area where little research has been done on this formation.</p><p> <b>Appendix C</b> is a geo-thermochronologic study to measure the lag time of Upper Jurassic to Upper Cretaceous conglomerates and sandstones in the Cordilleran foreland basin. The maximum depositional ages using DZ U-Pb match existing biostratigraphic age controls. AFT is an effective thermochronometer for Lower to Upper Cretaceous foreland stratigraphy and indicates that source material was exhumed from >4&ndash;5 km depth in the Cordilleran orogenic belt between 118 and 66 Ma, and zircon (U-Th)/He suggests that it was exhumed from &lt;8&ndash;9 km depth. Apatite U-Pb analyses indicate that volcanic contamination is a significant issue, without which, one cannot exclude the possibility that the youngest detrital AFT population is contaminated with significant amounts of volcanogenic apatite and does not represent source exhumation. AFT lag times are &lt;5 Myr with relatively steady-state to slightly increasing exhumation rates. Lag time measurements indicate exhumation rates of ~0.9->>1 km/Myr.</p>

Search the library catalog for the location and call number.<br>Deformation across plate boundaries often occurs over broad zones with relative motions between plates typically accommodated by faults of different styles acting together in a complex system. Collision of the Yakutat microplate within the Alaskan portion of the Pacific-North America plate boundary drives deformation over 600 km away where the Denali fault divides predominantly rigid crustal block motions of southern Alaska from distributed deformation in central Alaska. Quaternary geologic mapping along the Nenana River valley and the Japan Hills of the northern foothills of the Alaska Range defines zones of Quaternary thrust faulting recorded in the progressive deformation of Pleistocene fluvial terraces. I use topographic profiles of these terraces and paleoseismic trenching of fault scarps to characterize the Quaternary activity and constrain the subsurface geometry of these faults. Radiocarbon and cosmogenic exposure dating methods provide age control on the stratigraphy in the trenches and landforms offset by these faults. These observations define a 1-1.5 mm/yr slip rate for the Gold King fault which changes laterally from a north-vergent thrust into a north and south vergent thrust wedge that uplifts the Japan Hills. Along the Nenana River valley, the progressive deformation of Pleistocene surfaces defines a north-vergent critically-tapered thrust wedge. The geometry of progressive uplift and folding requires a near planar, south-dipping basal thrust fault with two major north-dipping backthrusts. All three faults were active simultaneously on a scale of 10 4 yrs with slip rates of 0.25-1 mm/yr, until the late Pleistocene when we infer the retreat of glacial ice from the main axis of the Alaska Range caused a change in thrust wedge dynamics. I use the orientation of Quaternary deformation north of the Denali fault to show that strain is highly partitioned and establish geologic constraints on the regional horizontal stress orientation. North of the Denali fault, fault-normal principal shortening accommodates 3-5 mm/yr of strain transfer across the Denali fault system. Two appendices contain additional results of paleoseismic trenching and neotectonic investigations across 4 active faults near the Nenana River. Abstract:
The Gorringe Bank region is located at the eastern end of the Azores-Gibraltar plate boundary, which plate kinematic studies show to progressively change from extension at the Azores, through pure right lateral strike slip at the Gloria fault to compression at Gibraltar. The region is dominated by high relief (4-5 km), highly deformed, uncompensated, ENE-WSW trending seamounts and intervening abyssal plains with basin sediment thicknesses in excess of 4 km and minimal surface deformation. Gorringe Bank, which was formed by overthrusting of the African plate upon the Eurasian plate at about 10 Ma along the plate boundary, is supported in part by exure of the Eurasian plate, as indicated by pre-loading sediments and basement to the north which are tilted towards Gorringe Bank. Broken plate models show the Eurasian plate to have an elastic thickness of about 35 km which is in agreement with that expected for the crustal age (130-135 Ma) at the time of loading. Coral Patch Ridge was formed by a combination of thrust faulting and whole crustal buckling resulting from the past 20 Ma compression and was partially uplifted before deposition of an olistostrome in the Middle Miocene. Recent compressional deformation is distributed over a wide region, as indicated by the dispersed shallow seismicity and has a trend which rotates from approximately N45oE to N70oE from west to east across the region, near perpendicular to westward verging plate motion vectors. The majority of extensional and strike-slip deformation is explained by a regional strike-slip strain ellipse model, including an antithetic NNE-SSW strike slip fault between Gettysburg and Hirondelle seamounts which marks the boundary between the Eastern and Western Horseshoe Basins. Isostatic models for the Madeira-Tore Rise, which initially formed at the Mid Atlantic Ridge, give an elastic thickness of approximately 15 km indicating that significant material was added to the Rise as it moved away from the Ridge.

Abstract:
Pleistocene marine terraces of the northern Oregon coast are an important factor in understanding the tectonics and paleoseismicity of the central Cascadia subduction zone. The lowest marine terrace, tentatively correlated to 80,000 year old Whiskey Run terrace of southern Oregon, is intermittently exposed in the present day sea cliff along an 80 km section of coastline between Tillamook Head and Cape Kiwanda. Terrace sediments consist largely of fine material such as clay, silt and fine sand with several locations containing large amounts of gravel derived from nearby headlands and steep bedrock hills. The terrace sediments are interpreted to be deposited in back-barrier marine environments, such as a bay, very similar to the bays which presently exist on the northern Oregon coast. Interbedded with terrace sediments are peat horizons which represent buried marsh or forest surfaces. These peat horizons have gradational lower contacts and abrupt upper contacts with terrace sediments indicating that the marsh or forest surfaces formed gradually above sea level and were suddenly downdropped below sea level to be buried by bay sediments. Such features are consistent with a seismically active Cascadia subduction zone which produces interseismic coastal uplift and coseismic coastal subsidence.

Abstract:
The Voyager 2 encounter with Neptune and its moons in August of 1989 completed the discovery phase of planetary exploration. In the 25 years since Mariner 4 returned the first images of another planet, geophysical models for such basic processes as mantle convection and loading which were developed for the Earth have been strained beyond their limits by features such as the Tharsis rise on Mars and the coronae of Miranda which cover as much as a quarter of their planetary circumference. In this work I develop a general planetary shell model in spherical coordinates that is capable of treating shells of arbitrary thickness and driving forces of arbitrary breadth. I then present a methodology for finding the forces exerted on the shell from two processes. I first develop a treatment for mantle convection driven by a density anomaly within a viscous mantle. This model is applied to the small moon of Uranus, Miranda, to study the three large coronae which dominate its surface and for which several competing hypotheses were offered, two of which invoked mantle convection driven by density anomalies of opposite sign. I then develop a general model for loading of the lithosphere and examine the effects of a range of load breadths and lithosphere thicknesses. I map out the combinations of these two variables where classical approximations such as the flat-plate and thin-shell models are applicable as well as determine the nature and extent of the transition between these two regimes. Finally, I employ finite element modeling to investigate the coronae on Venus, showing that morphological aspects of these features reported in the literature can be produced by flexure of the lithosphere beneath a volcanic load and gravitational sliding of a cooled crust off these volcanic mounds. I then, however, produce independent characteristic topographic profiles for three of the more regular coronae which question how typical the reported morphologies are in the coronae in general.

La sédimentation sur la plate-forme du Pérou central présente de l'Aalénien (dogger) au Santonien (Crétacé supérieur) une grande diversité de milieux de dépôt et de faciès, seulement interrompue du Bathonien au Tithonique inférieur. Dans la première partie, on étudie en détail la sédimentation détritique (fluviatile, littorale, tidale) et carbonatée dans la région des hauts plateaux des Andes du Pérou central. La tectonique synsédimentaire est détaillée et intégrée dans des schémas paléogéographiques. La deuxième partie présente un exemple d'interprétation d'une série détritique avec les concepts de la stratigraphie séquentielle et en termes de variations du niveau marin. Dans la troisième partie, pour la partie orientale des Hauts Plateaux et en Cordillère Orientale, on interprète la tectonique tangentielle (vers le sud-ouest) par le jeu de décollements dans la couverture enracinés sur un rétrochevauchement (décollement), lequel est lié au fonctionnement d'un chevauchement crustal subandin vers le nord-est. On propose une coupe structurale synthétique des Andes du Pérou central à l'échelle de la lithosphère.

Abstract:
Cretaceous continental extension was accommodated by the development of the Paparoa Metamorphic Core Complex, resulting in the separation of New Zealand from Gondwana. High grade (Lower Plate) and low grade (Upper Plate) rocks are separated by the Ohika and Pike Detachment Faults. The two detachment faults have distinctly different histories, with greater exhumation along the Pike Detachment Fault. The onset of crustal extension is proposed to have commenced along the Pike Detachment Fault at 116.2 ± 5.9 Ma (Rb/Sr dating). Both geochemical and geochronological approaches are adopted for this thesis, through the in situ analysis of oxygen and hafnium isotope ratios, trace metals and U-Pb content. Chemical changes are tracked during the petrogenesis of the Buckland Granite, with mafic replenishment observed in the later stages of crystallisation. Crystallisation temperatures of the Buckland Granite are calculated using zircon saturation thermometry, with an average Ti-in-zircon temperature of 697℃ (upper-amphibolite facies). Inherited zircons in Lower Plate rocks show distinct age peaks at c. 1000, 600 and 300 Ma, illustrating the incorporation of heterogeneous local crust (Greenland Group and Karamea Batholith). Model ages (TDM) are calculated for inherited zircons of the Lower Plate rocks, which record the time at which magma bodies (zircon host rocks) were extracted from the mantle. Maximum and minimum model ages for the Buckland Granite average at 3410 Ma and 2969 Ma, with the maximum TDM value of 3410 Ma coinciding with the proposed major crustal formation event of the Gondwana supercontinent at c. 3.4-3.5 Ga. Two distinct U-Pb zircon age peaks are observed in the Buckland Granite at 102.4 ± 0.7 and 110.3 ± 0.9 Ma. The 110.3 ± 0.9 Ma age is interpreted as the crystallisation age of the pluton, while the 102.4 ± 0.7 is proposed to represent a younger thermal (magmatic?) event associated with the 101-102 Ma Stitts Tuff.

Abstract:
Convergent continental margins are regions of intense deformation caused by the interaction of oceanic plates with continents. The spatial extent of deformation is broadly commensurate with the specific time scale of the causative phenomenon. For example, subduction-related short-term deformation is limited to <200 km from the margin, whereas long-term plate convergence cause deformation over ∼1000 km landward. Deformation is thus manifested in multiple ways, with attributes depending on the scale of measurement. In this thesis we investigate the use of two geophysical approaches in the study of deformation: 1) The analysis of potential-field anomalies to derive estimates of the elastic thickness (Te) of the lithosphere, and 2) The structural study of past and present subduction systems using seismic observations and modelling. Both approaches involve the development of appropriate methodologies for data analysis and modelling, and their application to the western Canadian landmass. Our findings are summarized as follows: 1) We develop a wavelet-based technique to map variations in Te and its anisotropy; 2) We show how a step-wise transition in Te and its anisotropy from the Cordillera to the Craton is a major factor influencing lithospheric deformation; 3) We implement a waveform modelling tool that includes the effects of structural heterogeneity and anisotropy for teleseismic applications, and use it to model the signature of a fossil subduction zone in a Paleoproterozoic terrane; 4) We use teleseismic recordings to map slab edge morphology in northern Cascadia and show how slab window tectonism and slab stretching led to the creation of the oceanic Explorer plate; 5) We use seismic signals from the subducting oceanic crust to calculate elevated Poisson’s ratio and infer high pore-fluid pressures and a low-permeability plate boundary within the forearc region of northern Cascadia.
