Abstract:
This study examines the collaborative work of the filmmakers Danièle Huillet and Jean-Marie Straub (1962-2006) in respect to current and future formations of political avant-garde filmmaking. Throughout their joint career the Marxist filmmakers understood their work as part of an ongoing effort to participate in the class struggle, despite of an overall decline in faith regarding revolutionary politics. Straub-Huillet pursued this desire for radical, social and political change not simply on the level of filmic content, but rather by employing distinct cinematic practices. This study is, at the same time, an effort to combat the political inertia that affected film theory as part of larger disciplinary shifts in the humanities. In order to do so, I am engaging, first and foremost, in poststructuralist discourses that will be discussed on the basis of traditional forms of Marxist-oriented critical theories. Reason for this is an attempt to replace metaphysical paradigms with an aporetic structure that is affirmative of difference, rather than identity. Based on the notion of an elective affinity Straub-Huillet's film adaptations challenged traditional forms of cinematic authorship and collaboration. Instead of simply referencing other authors, Straub-Huillet allow the author as an other to enter and intervene with the film-text. This creative relationship is as much characterized by an act of resistance that is maintained through an overt formal use of direct quotations. This introduces a principle of repetition and reproduction into the films that defines the couple's filmmaking process as a practice of creative labor. The textual figure of the border draws out further how this practice gives rise to new understandings of cinema in regard to nation, culture, and history. Figurations of ruins outline, in addition, how these issues pertain at once to necessity and the limits of representation. This points, in conclusion, to a central dilemma affecting all political film practices: the difficulty of reinventing images that are not already clichés or corporate entities. Straub-Huillet address this problem in a specific way; they aim at the production of an image that pertains to a (future) revolutionary event on the basis of an already existing classical genealogy.

Abstract:
Ce travail de thèse voudrait interroger les liens qui peuvent unir certains films avec un type d’espace spécifique, le lieu. L’hypothèse de départ consiste, en suivant les travaux d’historiens, de géographes et d’historiens de l’art, à établir un rapport entre le mouvement de patrimonialisation qui se développe au XIXe siècle, principalement autour de la représentation des lieux et des monuments, et l’émergence du cinématographe. Ce rapport est d’ordre fonctionnel et discursif : nombre d’intellectuels voient dans le cinématographe naissant le média adéquat pour produire des images patrimoniales de lieux. Dès lors, ce travail voudrait réinterroger certaines œuvres, dont les films réalisés par John Ford au sein de Monument Valley, ceux que Jean-Marie Straub et Danièle Huillet ont tourné entre 1975 et 1980, ou encore l’œuvre en cours de Tariq Teguia, dans le but d’essayer de saisir la façon dont cette « série culturelle » patrimoniale a pu être réinvestie dans des corpus très divers. La méthode iconologique, appliquée ici à des représentations spatiales, permettra de mettre à jour des liens figuratifs et conceptuels dans les œuvres, que les contextes socio-historiques semblent séparer de façon imperméable
My thesis questions the links that may bind different kinds of movies together following a certain type of space : the place. As such, I will base my research on the works of historians, geographers and art historians in order to establish a link between representations of places and monuments, and the apparition of cinematograph. This link is functional and discursive: many intellectuals see in the nascent cinematograph the apt media for the production of patrimonial pictures. Henceforth, this work would like to question new works, among which the movies of John Ford directed in Monument Valley, those directed by Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet from 1975 to 1980, along with the movies of Tariq Teguia, are to be found. My objective is to understand the way this patrimonial « cultural series » could be reinvested in very different corpuses. The iconological method, applied to spatial representations, will allow me to show figurative and conceptual links in movies that belong to different historical contexts

A Teoria da Credibilidade providencia uma maneira de tarifar um risco no ramo segurador, fazendo para isso uso do histórico de sinistros, tanto individual como colectivo, para encontrar o prémio puro. Tem estado em desenvolvimento durante aproximadamente um século e é uma ferramenta importante que qualquer actuário deverá saber utilizar. Dos vários modelos de Credibilidade disponíveis, escolhemos o Modelo Bühlmann-Straub, amplamente reconhecido como o mais importante do ramo segurador, e o Modelo Hierárquico, que expande o Modelo Bühlmann-Straub através da implementação de uma estrutura hierárquica. Estes são aplicados à linha de negócio Acidentes de Trabalho, para determinar quais as melhores abordagens a cada um dos modelos.
Credibility Theory provides a way to rate a risk in insurance, making use of both the individual and collective claim experience to find the pure premium. It has been in development for almost a century now, and is an important tool that every actuary should know. From the many Credibility Models available to use, we chose the Bühlmann-Straub model, widely regarded as the most important one in insurance, and the Hierarchical Model, that expands upon the Bühlmann-Straub model by implementing an hierarchical structure in the model. We apply these to the Worker's Compensation line of business, to determine what the best approaches to each model are.

Ce travail de recherche tente de redéfinir l’émancipation intellectuelle et sensible que permettent certaines expériences cinématographiques. « Le spectateur, pour l’auteur, n’est autre qu’un autre auteur » écrivait Pasolini. Danièle Huillet et Jean-Marie Straub, Harun Farocki et Pedro Costa (mais également Jean-Claude Rousseau,James Benning, Robert Kramer, ou parmi les jeunes cinéastes, Wang Bing, Albert Serra et Lisandro Alonso) inventent des dispositifs cinématographiques qui profanent le cinéma. En déconstruisant le langage cinématographique, en mettant au jour leur« armature artistique », les films profanes libèrent et transmettent des énergies, des capacités d’imagination et de production (ou création). Les cinéastes profanes ne se déclarent pas éducateurs ou enseignants. Leur fonction n’est pas de communiquer un message, de donner une leçon ou de transmettre un savoir au spectateur. Ils considèrent le spectateur comme un égal, « un collègue éventuel ». Ils disséminent les traces de leur travail dans leurs films. Le spectateur peut alors recueillir ces traces afin de reconstruire une méthode de production, de fabrication, d’un film. La transmission d’une méthode (ou d’une énergie créative) nécessite une rencontre entre un cinéaste qui a l’intention de transmettre – par la bande – un savoir faire, une manière de représenter, de mettre en image une expérience, et un spectateur qui reconnaît dans les traces la maîtrise de l’auteur et souhaite l’exproprier de ce savoir faire
This research work tries to redefine sensitive and intellectual emancipation that allows some cinematographic experiments. "The Viewer, for the author, is other than another author" wrote Pasolini. Danièle Huillet and Jean-Marie Straub, Harun Farocki and Pedro Costa (but also Jean-Claude Rousseau, James Benning, Robert Kramer, or among young filmmakers, Wang Bing, Albert Serra and Lisandro Alonso) invented cinematographic devices that profane film. By deconstructing the film language, by updating their "artistic frame", profane films release and transmit energy, imagination and production (or creation) capabilities. Profane filmmakers do not declare themselves educators or teachers. Their function is not to communicate a message, give a lesson or to transmit knowledge to the Viewer. They consider the Viewer as an equal, "a potential colleague. They spread the traces of their work in their films. The spectator can then collect these traces in order to reconstruct a method of producing, manufacturing, a film.The transmission of a method (or a creative energy) requires an encounter between a filmmaker who intends to pass - band - know-how, a way to represent, implement image a viewer who recognizes in traces the mastery of the author and wishes to expropriate this know-how and experience
