Abstract:
Obtaining low-latency results from window-aggregate queries can be critical to certain data-stream processing applications. Due to a DSMS's lack of control over incoming data (typically, because of delays and bursts in data arrival), timely results for a window-aggregate query over a data stream cannot be obtained with guarantees about the results' accuracy. In this thesis, I propose a technique, which I term prodding, to obtain early result estimates for window-aggregate queries over data streams. The early estimates are obtained in addition to the regular query results. The proposed techniqu

Abstract:
Evaluating queries over data streams has become an appealing way to support various stream-processing applications. Window queries are commonly used in many stream applications. In a window query, certain query operators, especially blocking operators and stateful operators, appear in their windowed versions. Previous research work in evaluating window queries typically requires ordered streams and this order requirement limits the implementations of window operators and also carries performance penalties. This thesis presents efficient and flexible algorithms for evaluating window queries. We

Recent technological advances in sensor networks and mobile devices give rise to new challenges in processing of live streams. In particular, time-series sequence matching, namely, the similarity matching of live streams against a set of predefined pattern sequence queries, is an important technology for a broad range of domains that include monitoring the spread of hazardous waste and administering network traffic. In this thesis, I use the time critical application of monitoring of fire growth in an intelligent building as my motivating example. Various measures and algorithms have been esta

Distributed stream-based applications manage large quantities of data and exhibit unique production and consumption patterns that set them apart from general-purpose applications. This dissertation examines possible ways of creating more efficient memory management schemes. Specifically, it looks at the memory reclamation problem. It takes advantage of special traits of streaming applications to extend the definition of the garbage collection problem for those applications and include not only data items that are not reachable but also items that have no effect on the final outcome of the appl

Githinji, Stanley Muturi. "Designing a real-time data streaming technique for enhancing the effectiveness of destination selection." Thesis, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/21913.

Full text
Abstract:
The effectiveness of tour destination selection is dependent on pre-visit information sources. As competition increases in the tourism industry, destination organisations need to improve current destination selection processes. Research on current processes indicate that information sources accessed by potential tourists when making travel decisions may not be a true reflection of what the destination is offering. Any negative difference between perceived images during pre-visit and real images during the actual visit may result in poor destination reputation and dissatisfied customers.
